  1. Buses with rooftop gardens will begin plying Singapore's roads, as part of an initiative to study possible energy and cost savings for bus operators. The Garden on the Move initiative, which was launched on Sunday (May 5), will see 10 SBS Transit buses ply Singapore’s roads for at least three months. The routes include one through the Central Business District and another through Orchard Road. Fares for these buses are the same as for regular buses. Touted as Asia’s first green-roofed bus initiative, the buses are outfitted with a soilless roof system - instead of conventional soil, the plants are secured on a lightweight mat used for skyrise greenery, said GWS Living Art, Moove Media, National Parks Board (NParks), Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) and Temasek Foundation in a joint press release. This makes it cleaner, easier to maintain and more economical than other conventional green roof systems, which are primarily soil-based, the release said. The aim of the three-month study is to confirm that the green roof will lead to a drop in temperature within the interior of the buses, and a reduction in the fuel consumption used for air-conditioning, the release said. Mr Oh Cheow Sheng, group director of NParks said: “This is a creative initiative that seeks to extend Singapore’s greening efforts, and which truly encapsulates the vision of a biophilic City in a Garden. We hope that this will spur others to explore other similarly innovative ways to green up Singapore." “Building upon the success of our Live.Work.Play.Green campaign in 2018 where we garnered massive support from the public on green buildings, this new initiative aims to once again drive green building awareness to the forefront of the public’s consciousness," said Dr Ho Nyok Yong, president of the SGBC. "We hope to sustain interest in green buildings by putting one of the most recognisable elements of a green building onto a very public platform.” https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/buses-sbs-transit-rooftop-garden-ply-singapore-roads-orchard-cbd-11505144 this sounds funny. can tahan thunderstorm or not?
  2. this morning brought my family to Jacob Ballas Children's Garden, reportedly the largest children's garden in Asia after the official opening of the extension on 10 Nov 2017. a really fun place to bring your kids there as the whole place is specially designed for kids (duh). theres a Food for Thought (Tots) there for brunch as well, with kids meals, and the food and pricing is quite decent. have to go there early as parking is limited. too bad we didnt stay for long, as our kids were crying to go home. more info can be found in the links below: https://www.nparks.gov.sg/gardens-parks-and-nature/parks-and-nature-reserves/jacob-ballas-childrens-garden http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/jacob-ballas-childrens-garden-now-largest-asia-after-s12-million-extension some photos from this morning. interactive wall at the entrance, very popular with the kids water play area gravel area with cranking devices to power LEDs central pond sand pit hedge maze for kids wooden playground suspension bridge entrance to Food for Tots
  3. A pity, because I think this is a very good restaurant. http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/more-singapore-stories/story/lei-garden-closes-orchard-shopping-centre-branch-2014070 With so many restaurants closing down, or on the brink of closing down, due to manpower shortage issues, and such news being repeatedly published on MSM, I think the message is clear. It reminds me of an oatmeal comic. Food can really get people to react like nothing else can:

  8. Hi All, Yesterday, I was a victim of hit-and-run accident. My car was parked at road side lot at Tyersall Avenue to attend the wedding at Halia Restaurant. When I came back to my car after wedding, I had found that there was a big dent on the right side of the fender. I can't believe that it was happened. Regret that I didn't install in-car cam which I already had (a gift from my friend). Driver side door was not able to open due to fender alignment. The detail; Location: Tyersall Ave (lot 25A) Date: 22 Dec 2012 Time: Between 12 to 3pm (Clear day) Car Make: VW Golf March Although chances are slim, hopefully there was witness to this accident. My holiday trip was ruined because of this accident.
  9. NIMBY Version 3.0 [shakehead] From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1260600/1/.html Petition against setting up of childcare centre at rooftop garden By Lip Kwok Wai | Posted: 17 March 2013 2214 hrs Ow Bin Bing SINGAPORE: Some Punggol residents are petitioning against the set-up of a childcare centre at the rooftop garden of a multi-storey carpark. A closed-door dialogue session was held with residents on Sunday. It's understood that officers from the HDB and the Social and Family Development Ministry were also present. Some residents told Channel NewsAsia they were informed about the plans to set up the centre at Block 180 Edgefield Plains, last week. Some were concerned about the safety of the children, adding that there's already a childcare centre within the vicinity. Others felt that doing so goes against the government's push to allocate more green spaces within housing estates. Still, there were residents who felt the rooftop garden has been under-utilised and can be put to better use. One resident said she's garnered about 20 to 30 signatures for the petition. Ow Bin Bing said: "If the small kids - two months old baby to seven years small kids, if anything happened, how can they run for their life? Let's say if there was a fire or anything, I have been teaching for 27 years, I know the small kids are very active, if anything were to happen, who will be responsible for their safety?" When contacted, MP for the area Penny Low said there are plans to build more childcare centres in Punggol. She said some locations are suitable, while others are not. And added that ground consultations and innovative use of space are needed, to make sure residents' needs are met. - CNA/ck
  10. It is Friday night and Serangoon Garden is a motorist's nightmare. A never-ending stream of cars head for the popular enclave of eating joints and watering holes. Drivers honk and patience thins as they jostle for limited carpark spaces. The compact centre of the middle-class housing estate is packed with 18 restaurants, coffee shops and a fast-food outlet, as well as the popular Chomp Chomp and Serangoon Garden hawker centres. On a busy night, car valet Adi, 45, parks up to 20 cars of patrons of Pow Sing chicken rice eatery. 'Weekends are the worst,' he says. Resident S.L. Chan, a businesswoman in her 40s, says she avoids driving near the roundabout during dinner time at the weekend. 'The congestion is already bad. Impatient drivers and illegally parked cars make it worse,' she said. Acting on residents' complaints, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) imposed a ban last month: No more Serangoon Garden shophouses can be turned into food joints. source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_781481.html

  12. STOMPer Marcus was disgusted to see this foreign couple changing their baby girl's diaper right at their table in Seoul Garden. They were also talking at the top of their lungs and showing no regard for other patrons, said the STOMPer. The STOMPer wrote: "These people, who appear to be from China, were talking at the top of their lungs and even changed their baby's diaper while others were eating! "How rude and unhygienic! "One old man was also scratching his leg while resting it on the sitting area. "The little girl of theirs was also making a lot of noise and seemed very demanding and rude towards her parents. "How unruly of them. "Are these China citizens coming here to make a fool of themselves and ruining their country's image? "They ought to learn some basic table manners and courtesy. "I am very enraged by this sight."
  13. http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews...801-292162.html f--kers la...take photo onli also cannot... why angmor so liddat... A family who wanted to take some photos at Botanic Gardens' Swan Lake Gazebo were shooed away by a group of Caucasians who claimed that they had 'booked' the venue. The reader, cheery, wrote to online citizen journalism website STOMP, saying that they saw a group of foreigners laying their mat in the centre of the pavilion with brownies and curry puffs. Thinking that they were about to have a party, cheery approached them to ask whether they could take photos at one of the four available benches in the pavilion. They were rejected by one of the foreigners, who said that they could not be there because they had booked the place. When they tried to verify their booking, they were shooed away and told to go to the information counter. "Upon our last plea for them to spare us just three minutes to take a photo, he replied rudely 'Which part of I've booked this place do you not understand!'" wrote cheery. The reader then went to the National Parks (NParks) information counter and learned that despite having a booking, they were required to share it with the public should they request it. When confronted and told of this rule by the NParks, cheery said that the foreigners became extremely rude and one of them even shouted that they had a right to the place since they booked it. "When he told his friends and family members about the incident, they even raised their voice and exclaimed, 'This is ridiculous!' "Thoroughly embarrassed by the ruckus and stares we have attracted, we eventually left without taking a photo," wrote cheery. Remind me of this scene
