Why buying this $200 device is the best thing I did last year
Typicalcarguy posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Writing about a gaming device... you would be thinking that I must be quite the gamer. However, the reality is quite the contrary. Being a car guy through and through, even the games that I play are predominantly driving or racing ones. That said, there are other games that I've enjoyed from young - from the Pokemon titles on Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance to the RPG games on Playstation 2 (PS2) and rhythm games such as DJ Max on the Playstation Portable (PSP), these were the games that kept me occupied during my childhood and teenage years. And it is why I ended up buying the device you see here - the Retroid Pocket 3+! So, what is the Retroid Pocket 3+? It is an android-powered handheld console that is relatively affordable, and is made predominantly for running emulators. You see, software developers and retro game aficionados quickly realised that the powerful Android mobile devices could be made to run emulator software, which would allow you to emulate retro console games. In the past, you would require a proper gaming PC to run Playstation 2 games. However, mobile hardware has became powerful enough to do so these days. But there still presents a serious issue - your powerful smartphone does not have physical buttons and analog sticks for an enjoyable gaming experience. And this is where the a device such as the Retroid Pocket 3+ comes in - it looks like a smaller Nintendo Switch lite, and it has all the buttons you'll need for retro gaming. While it's hardware isn't able to run all Playstation 2 games smoothly, it is still able to handle quite a fair bit. And the best part is that it isn't prohibitively expensive! Being an Android device means that it will run many native Android applications and games, such as the Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City/San Andreas trilogy (these were originally PS2 games!). Of course, you can also run apps such as Youtube and other media players (sadly Netflix isn't supported), which means that it'll double up as a media player as well. But you don't really buy one of these to play Android games, it really is in its element when you are a fan of retro games. Want to play Pokemon? You'll be glad to know that Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance emulation are easily achievable by almost any hardware these days. In fact, the Retroid Pocket 3+ will even run some Nintendo 3DS games! The most amazing thing about retro game emulation is the fact that I can now play my favourite home-console title on the go. Youngsters these days probably wouldn't be able to understand it as they are well too familiar with the capabilities of the smart devices in recent times. But in the early 2000s, where the PS2 was the most advanced console in the market, we had to set up the console, connect it to the TV, and play these games with wired controllers. But now, I can play my favourite PS2 JRPG game on the go. I don't even have to be made to play till I find a save point (RPG gamers would understand...) - the emulator comes with a save-state function that allow you to start the game from the exact point as and when you want to. With these functions, you can really enjoy the flexibility - drove 5 out of 10 laps in Gran Turismo and you feel like taking a break? Sure, just create a save-state, and pick it up again when you want to. It's kind of funny how I chanced upon this device - I was actually contemplating the repair of my old PSP for nostalgia sake, then I read about how such devices can not only emulate the PSP smoothly at upscaled resolution, resulting in sharper images, but also capable of much more. I've since gotten the Retroid Pocket 3+ and never looked back. The portability of the device also made it an excellent travel buddy. Being so easy to pick up and just start gaming, I've spent countless hours on it since the day I received it. My only gripe is that the Retroid Pocket 3+ could be a little more powerful, as it has some trouble running quite a fair bit of PS2 titles among others. That said, the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro packing almost twice the performance of the 3+ was recently announced, and I am contemplating getting it.... Are you also into gaming or retro gaming? Feel free to share your thoughts and recommendations! If you aren't familiar with retro gaming, but would like to get something after reading this post of mine, feel free to comment as well, I would be happy to share what I know with you! - Zhi Xuan -

Nissan presented drawings of design esport chairs inspired by three of the most famous auto manufacturers' cars, Armada, GT-R Nismo and Leaf, at the celebration of National Video Games Day. Nissan has implemented the language of design and selected unique characteristics of each vehicle, together with the "Zero Gravity Seat" concept for many Nissan vehicles to look at gaming chairs. https://twitter.com/NissanUSA/status/1172118191813910530https://twitter.com/NissanUSA/status/1172118191813910530 The Nissan-inspired GT-R NISMO chair adopts a sporting strategy with a race-inspired silhouette, lightweight carbon and aluminium fibre, red leather and synthetic suede details. Focused on comfort with a climate-controlled seat, pluck black and brown leather pillows and additional lumbar support over lengthy game hours, the Armada Gaming Chair has the classic character of an SUV. Finally, a technologically advanced strategy requires the chair inspired by the all-electric leaf. Integrated USB charging ports add features, while electric blue-inserted light-grey leather seats indicate power efficiency. The three chair designs are being unveiled just a few months after Nissan announced its partnerships with esports gaming teams Faze Clan and OpTic Gaming. "For any company trying to reach the Gen-Z and millennial-minded audience, streaming and esports is an enormous opportunity," Robert Cross, Nissan's director of media and activation said when announcing the partnerships earlier this year. "We believe this partnership presents a new approach in introducing ourselves and connecting with millions of fans through their favourite gamers." Nissan has no plans to build the chairs at this time, but reps say the company will gauge public interest via Twitter and go from there.

Seremban Boy Keeps Losing in Video Game So His Dad Broke His Competitor’s Spine On January 11, a misunderstanding over a video game ended with a teenage gamer being hospitalised with broken bones. The incident happened at around 10pm at an electronic game store in Palm Mall, Seremban. Sin Chew Daily reported that the teenage victim had been playing a competitive video game against another boy. After beating the boy several times, the boy’s father approached the victim and offered him RM2 to intentionally lose and let the boy win. However, the bribe didn’t work and the teenager soon seized another victory, beating the boy once more. The father was angered and became violent, throwing a chair at the victim. He kicked the teenager several times, rallying up around four other men to come and assist the assault. A video of the event posted on Twitter showed them surrounding the visibly terrified teenager, yelling at him as passersby watched helplessly. At one point in time, a man even kicked the teenager in the head as he cowered on the floor. The assault was brutal, and the boy ended up being hospitalised as he suffered severe injuries. With bruises across his body, punctured lungs, broken ribs, and a shattered spine, the victim is currently in the ICU of Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital. Source: Sin Chew Daily Four suspects have since been arrested, as reported by The Sun. All four suspects have been in remand until today (15 Jan), said Seremban district police chief Asst Comm Thiew Hock Poh. Their case is currently being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting. Source: Sin Chew Daily The police are currently searching for the whereabouts of a witness, S. Munisvaran, 37, to assist in the investigation. They have advised members of the public with information on the witness and the incident to call the investigating officer, Mohammad Najeeb Mohammed Shukri at 06-6033284. What a terrible tragedy! And over such a minor issue. Violence is never the answer and we wish the victim a complete recovery.

Thermaltake Technology is a manufacturer of PC cases, power supplies and cooling solutions with its main headquarters located in Taipei, Taiwan. Recently the firm requested BMW Group DesignworksUSA- a subsidiary of BMW - to develop a design concept for a high end gaming headset. The headset comes after a successful design collaboration on the Level_10 chassis in 2009 and the Level_10 M Mouse - launched last year. The challenge for the industrial design firm was to translate the Level_10 chassis design language into the headset design. The headset successfully translated the iconic Level_10 design language into a pure/bended aluminum design, negative-space and an overall architectural-structure finish. The result is a solid, yet lightweight looking headset with an audiophile design character. The curved layering effect of the ear piece resembles sound waves and has been directly adapted from the tower design concept. The Level_10 M Headset features high sound quality with 40mm driver units and embedded with Tt eSPORTS' most advanced acoustic engineering. Gamers can experience a rich sound at low frequencies, purifying sensation at mid frequency, and harmonic at the high frequencies. The headset is constructed from solid aluminum for a robust, yet lightweight appearance with a high comfort level. Large headphone capsules and a smooth-surface headband provide maximum comfort for hours while the sliding adjustments and an adjustable microphone provides a customised fit. The microphone is foldable and can be tucked when not needed. This nifty feature also calls for easy storage in small shelves or desks and during transportation. The headset was officially launched in March 2013 at Hanover, Germany during the CeBIT 2013 exhibition. From May 2013, the headset will be available at most major retail stores and online in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Available in black and white, the headset retails for $149.99 The Level_10 M Headset is on digital display at Tt eSports

From the land that brings us the Transformers cartoon series comes a new Japanese franchise with a similar concept. Called the Chō Soku Henkei Gyrozetter, the new franchise has licensed several Japanese hot performance vehicles such as the Toyota 86, Mazda RX-8, Nissan GT-R and Mitsubishi Evo. Created by Square Enix, the company behind the Final Fantasy video game franchise and Dragon Quest Series, Chō Soku Henkei Gyrozetter was first launched recently as an arcade game with an animated film version set to be released later this year. Will the new film be able to achieve the same success as the trend setter, Transformers? That reminds to be seen. Transformers has transcend generations and has moved from the TV box to the movie screen. That is an achievement that is hard to beat. Photo Credit: CarScoop
