  3. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/fallen-windows-49-cases-2020-bca-hdb-corrosion-maintenance-13750762 49 cases of fallen windows in the first 11 months of this year SINGAPORE: There were 49 cases of fallen windows across Singapore between January and November this year, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said in a joint media release with the Housing and Development Board (HDB) on Friday (Dec 11). Thirty-two of these involved casement windows, or windows with a side that is hinged to a frame. Sixteen cases were of fallen sliding windows, while the remaining incident involved louvre windows or those with horizontal panels. No injuries were reported from these incidents, said the agencies. The number of cases reported in the first 11 months of this year is not far from the 51 incidents in the whole of 2019. “Over the past few years, the number of fallen window cases we see yearly remains at about 50 cases. While there has not been an increase in numbers, there has also not been any improvement," said BCA’s director of facade engineering and technology department Lee Chee Weye. BCA said the key causes of fallen casement windows included corrosion in aluminium rivets in casement window fittings. "Corrosion compromises the strength of the rivets, rendering it unable to hold the casement window panels firmly in place," said the agency. Since 2004, a retrofitting order issued by BCA requires home owners to replace all aluminium rivets in casement windows with stainless steel ones. In the case of fallen sliding windows, investigations showed that there was a lack of proper safety stoppers and angle strips to keep panels within the tracks. "Sliding window panels without these safety features in place detached and fell when homeowners applied excessive outward force in opening or closing the windows," BCA added. Home owners can face a penalty of up to S$5,000 and/or a jail term of up to six months for failing to replace all aluminium rivets in casement windows with stainless steel ones.
  4. Hi all, Need your advice… Huge branches fell on my car My Comprehensive insurance premium was $680 Can repair at Kah Motor (KM) with NCD protector (current is 50% NCD) waiver of excess of 1st own damaged claim (2nd own damage excess is $800) Courtesy car provided if go repair at KM Kah Motor (KM) body shop will replace the roof, knock & re-spray two sides beside the roof, two front A-pillar, two door panels, front & rear fenders Estimated no 8 to 10 days (excluding weekends) Estimated repair cost of 6-8k Provide a courtesy car Authorised workshop A will only knock & re-spray the roof (unlike KM which will replace) The rest same as KM to knock & re-spray all damaged areas. Same estimated no of days as KM Did not provide estimated repair cost But NO courtesy car Option 1 Don’t repair Maybe this is good only if im confirmed going to scrap my car (but my almost 11yrs old car mileage is only 130k, if sell on SG car mart or to exporter, maybe can fetch higher than trade in to KM if buy new Civic this year) Option 2 Repair at Authorised workshop But unlikely, coz No courtesy car & KM workmanship should be better & KM replace roof instead of repair… Option 3 Find the cheapest workshop & repair out of my own pocket?? Option 4 Repair at KM Is this the best option? If do this, upon next insurance renewal, Most likely have to stay with current insurer, as NCD protector is only recognized by current insurer Estimated increase in premium of 5% to $200+ or $300+ or $400 No more NCD protector No more waiver of excess of 1st own damaged claim PS: Hi moderator, i seach by insurance & branch & tree, but was not able to find a similar topic... pls help to move to the appropriate thread if i post wrongly, many tks
  5. This morning witnessed the start of a fallen tree event along Marine Parade Road just outside Neptune Court. As the attached pictures showed, the tree blocked all the 3 lanes. As I walked along to Still Road to catch the connecting bus, managed to alert fellow commuters waiting in the next 2 bus-stops about the fallen tree. It was not easy for me to do it, but I did not think I could forgive myself for withholding the information so I did it anyway. Felt good. I hope all would do like-wise when face with similar situation. But looking at the root of the fallen tree really make me worried, as to how it could break so easily. Could be due to thunder storm the last few days? With the monsoon season arriving, we should be expecting more of such events.
  6. Singapore's private car population has fallen to its lowest level since 2011, and the shrinkage could continue. The latest available figures from the Land Transport Authority show that there were 598,219 cars as of the end of last month - down from 600,176 last year. The number stood at 607,292 in 2013, and 605,149 in 2012. The car population is now at its lowest since 2011, when there were 592,361 cars on the road. The shrinkage is a rare occurrence in Singapore, where a quota system allows the vehicle population to grow annually at a pre-determined rate. Observers said the contraction is a sign that the supply of certificates of entitlement (COEs) is lagging behind actual replacement demand. Since 2010, COE supply has been formulated largely by the number of cars scrapped in the preceding months. This often does not correspond with the number of cars scrapped in the following months. For instance, last year's May-July COE quota for cars was determined by the 7,083 cars scrapped from February to April. But actual scrappage from May to July was higher at 7,514. Over time, this leads to a population shrinkage http://straitstimes.com/news/singapore/transport/story/fewer-cars-the-road-coes-play-catch-20150226

  8. Kudos to the workers. Wonder if the public called MSO, how long would it hv taken for the tree to be removed?...... http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/construction-workers/1328914.html SINGAPORE: A fallen tree briefly blocked off all the lanes on Still Road on Monday (Aug 26), but a group of construction workers quickly cleared the obstruction, allowing vehicles to pass. All three lanes along Still Road, heading toward Eunos, were rendered impassable after a tree fell at about 2.15pm, following heavy rain. A Twitter user, Grace, told @ChannelNewsAsia that the workers, who were helping to renovate a house nearby, immediately helped to move the fallen trunk, clearing one lane for vehicles to pass.
  9. A four-year-old boy was hurt after a glass door at Westgate mall in Jurong East reportedly fell on top of him. A member of the public who only wants to be known as "Paul" sent in photos of the aftermath. He says he heard from the boy's mother that the glass door - about three-metres high - just outside of NTUC's My First Skool childcare centre and a Fitness First gym, leading to the outdoor area on Level 5, detached and fell on top of the boy just before 6pm. Mr Paul says the boy's entire body was pinned down by the door, and that he was lying facedown when he arrived shortly after. The boy's right cheek appeared to be bruised. There were also traces of blood on the ground. "Because the glass door is tempered glass, it shattered within," said Mr Paul. He says two staff members from the nearby Westgate Kids Club brought a first aid kit to tend to the boy, and a doctor from a clinic one level down came up to assist as well. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirms it received a call on the incident at 6:05pm, and says the boy suffered a cut to the back of his head and reported having neck pains. He was sent conscious to the National University Hospital, accompanied by his mother and mall staff. A spokesperson for Westgate mall says the boy was swinging the glass door the time of the accident. "Our investigations revealed that the boy had over-extended the glass door when he swung it, causing it to hit the door frame and shatter," said Ms Mandy Chiu, the marketing communications manager for Westgate in a statement to Channel NewsAsia. The boy remains in hospital for observation, but is in stable condition. "We wish him a speedy recovery, and continue to extend our help to him and his family," said Ms Chiu. The mall's contractor will be conducting safety checks on its glass doors and panels overnight, to prevent a recurrence of such an incident. 10. Think it's almost like autumn, and many leaves are brown and falling all round you? You are not quite wrong, you know, for Singapore's persistently dry weather has led to more dry, fallen leaves filling streets, pavements and drains, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said on Thursday. Twenty-five per cent more dry leaves were swept from the streets in February, compared with December 2013. In January, 15 per cent more had to be cleared, it said. The dry spell "has led to heavy leaf shedding and an accumulation of leaves in some public areas", said an NEA spokesman. Leaf litter weighing 1,750 tonnes was collected in February, which is equivalent to 350,000 filled rubbish bags. 12. Hi guys, Found my car with few dents on the roof and a broken tree branch. Must be due to the storm in early morning. 1 major dent is at the area where the front passenger door and the roof meets. 5cm x 5cm area dented in. Other major dent is a shallow dent of radius 10cm x 10cm above driver roof area. Then few other small dents. No paint chips, just some marring. How much do u think repair will cost?
  13. It is very sad that we lost 8 maids so far. It is really sad indeed. Most of the time they fall without proper supervision. Should we not ensure that 1. They never clean or do risky jobs without capable supervision and guidance 2. Get them some sort of full body safety belts We avoid cleaning those window areas with high risk of falling - Windows can be dirty rather than losing valuable life.

  16. can't resist posting this: as reported on yahoo.. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporesc...-001825003.html A woman in her 60s had suddenly fallen in front of a car near the Ghim Moh market and hawker centre on Saturday morning, dropping the baby she was carrying. When he saw the commotion, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, together with the People's Action Party's General Election candidates Liang Eng Hwa, Christopher De Souza and Sim Ann, rushed to help the woman and her grandchild, reported The Straits Times. The four candidates for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC were attending the Ulu Pandan Town Day and launch of the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC five-year plan. The Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, who was previously an ophthalmologist, told people not to crowd around the woman and spoke to her in Hokkien to ask if she could stand. The woman, known to residents as Aunty Ah Lian, replied, "No, my hand, my head hurt." A man, later found to be Sim's husband Dr Mok Ying Jang, stepped forward to identify himself as a doctor. Dressed in a light pink polo tee, he told the politicians to continue with their duties and that he would tend to the duo. The doctor, who was part of the first Singapore Everest team in 1998, later left with an ambulance ferrying the woman to the hospital. Follow Yahoo! News on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook.
