https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/consumer/close-shave-for-woman-as-three-ceiling-beams-fall-3-floors-in-far-east-plaza Close shave for woman as three ceiling beams fall 3 floors in Far East Plaza The mall's contractor is expected to carry out repairs on the trellis on Aug 10 evening. ST PHOTO: SHABANA BEGUM Shabana Begum PUBLISHED 10 AUG 2022, 9:20 PM SGT SINGAPORE - A woman in Far East Plaza had a narrow escape when three long wooden beams broke from the high ceiling and landed on the second-floor concourse on Wednesday morning (Aug 10). She was sitting on a red bench at the edge of the concourse when the grey beams crashed onto the floor mere metres from her. An employee of a tailor shop next to the concourse said he rushed out when he heard a loud crash and saw the woman hurrying away. She was the only person in the concourse when the incident occurred around 9.45am, said the employee who wanted to be known only as Mr Eric. "Luckily, the incident happened early in the morning. If there had been more footfall, someone could have got badly hurt," he said, adding that most shops in the Orchard mall open after 10am. In response to queries from The Straits Times, the Far East Plaza management said the incident happened when a technician was about to lower the high bay lights from the ceiling to replace a faulty lamp. He inadvertently reversed the direction of the winch, or lifting device, which caused the light fitting to move towards the ceiling trellis. "The impact caused three pieces of trellis to dislodge and fall from level five to level two. A lady was at the concourse at the time. Fortunately, nobody was injured," the mall's management said in its e-mail reply, adding that the concourse was immediately cordoned off. The mall's contractor is expected to carry out repairs on the trellis after the mall closed on Wednesday evening. The concourse will reopen after a thorough inspection, said Far East Plaza's management. When ST visited the strata mall at 3.30pm, the concourse had been fenced off with barriers circling the red bench. There was a gap in the level five ceiling above the bench, and one beam seemed to be hanging after being partially dislodged. The normally quiet morning of retailers and workers - especially those from cafes and coffee shops that had opened before 9am - was jolted by the loud sound of the beams hitting the ground. A number of people from the third to fifth storeys rushed out of their shops to check the commotion, said Mr Eric. A worker, known only as Mr Lim, at Isle Cafe coffee shop next to the concourse said he saw some mall employees rush to clear the debris and fence off the area. Mr Eric said this is the second incident in Far East Plaza recently. On July 10, two glass panels fell to the floor below after a shopper kicked them. No one was injured. "The area was cordoned off and the glass shards were swept away," he said. One of Singapore's oldest shopping complexes, Far East Plaza was opened in 1982.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/pubs-lawyer-contrasts-womans-active-carousell-account-against-her-claim-to-be This sueing remind me of many cases of fall in America and these people sue big companies like McDonald and etc and was successful. We should not allow that to happen. Hope judge to reject outright and also make her pay the legal fees too. We should not follow America path and instead make this women learnt her lesson that she will not exploit the system and extort money due to thinking, yes now its a time for me to strike rich, government got money, so can sue huge amount of money. If this women win the lawsuit, I bet in future there will have more cases coming in, maybe the fall will be less severe like slip and fall in wet surface in McDonald's and wanted to sue for millions of dollars. If that's the path singapore is going. Gg man. This below is one example in America.

Traffic Police bike gets into accident while chasing offender
chitchatboy posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
Now this is not something the residents of Ang Mo Kio get to see everyday! A Traffic Police officer has apparently skidded on the wet floor and crashed his Yamaha bike at the lift lobby of Block 619 Ang Mo Kio. As reported by SG Road vigilante, the incident happened on 27 May 2020 and eye witnesses claim that the officer was trying to chase another motorbike through the void deck when the police officer lost control and hit the wall. The comments by netizens were generally supportive of the officer going all the way in the fight for justice, with the usual few negative views here and there. -
Think there have been many cases of people faced with million dollar medical bills. Think it is time to review the need for free healthcare. Would you rather we have high taxes and have free healthcare or have it status quo where healthcare is only for rich in society? http://theindependent.sg/1m-for-hospital-bill-healthcare-or-nightmare/

just a facebook post i saw and thought itl be good to share here for those with elderly parents n never knew abt this function cos i dont. i dont have an apple watch too becos im using android. it might be useful for those with elderly parents. track their location?? setup the hard fall detection. now my question is the watch is badly damaged on the face hence it can detect a hard fall but when if the person falls and hit the head without damaging the watch can it still detect? this is still an interesting device to have. always thought it was way too overpriced. there are some cheap smart watches in the market but mayb not withthe same capabilities as the apple watch apple fall detection If Apple Watch Series 4 or later detects a hard fall while you're wearing your watch, it taps you on the wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert. You can choose to contact emergency services or dismiss the alert by pressing the Digital Crown, tapping Close in the upper-left corner, or tapping "I'm OK." If your Apple Watch detects that you're moving, it waits for you to respond to the alert and won't automatically call emergency services. If your watch detects that you have been immobile for about a minute, it will make the call automatically. After the call ends, your watch sends a message to your emergency contacts with your location letting them know that your watch detected a hard fall and dialed emergency services. Your watch gets your emergency contacts from your Medical ID. Some countries and regions have multiple emergency service numbers. For these countries, Apple Watch will call the number associated with ambulance services. What happens if your Apple Watch detects that you're immobile If your Apple Watch detects that you're immobile for about a minute, it begins a 30-second countdown, while tapping you on the wrist and sounding an alert. The alert gets louder, so that you or someone nearby can hear it. If you don't want to call emergency services, tap Cancel. When the countdown ends, your Apple Watch automatically contacts emergency services. When the call connects, your Apple Watch plays an audio message that informs emergency services that your Apple Watch detected a hard fall and then it shares your current location as latitude and longitude coordinates. The first time the message plays, the audio is at full volume, but then the volume is reduced so that you, or someone nearby, can talk to the responder. The message continues to play until you tap Stop Recorded Message or the call ends. Turn fall detection on or off Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap the My Watch tab. Tap Emergency SOS. Turn Fall Detection on or off. If you've entered your age when you set up your Apple Watch or in the Health app and you're age 65 and over, this feature automatically turns on. Apple Watch cannot detect all falls. The more physically active you are, the more likely you are to trigger fall detection due to high impact activity that can appear to be a fall. Set up your Medical ID and add emergency contacts Open Settings on your iPhone, then tap Health > Medical ID. Tap Edit. Enter your date of birth and other health information. To add an emergency contact, tap the add button under emergency contacts. Tap a contact, then add their relationship. To remove an emergency contact, tap the remove button next to the contact, then tap Delete. To make your Medical ID available from the Lock screen, turn on Show When Locked. In an emergency, this gives information to people who want to help. Tap Done. You can't set emergency services as an emergency contact. other advantages of having an apple watch - fitness tracker - easier to find iphone, tap a button and get a "ping" sound even if your phone set to silent - customise list of things to notify you about. Phone set to new mail notifications. Watch customise to new mail from people on my VIP list-your wife, family). So if your phone makes noise and you're not not very busy you can take a look. but if your watch bings, you have to look even if you are busy. - you dont have to constantly be carrying your phone. keep inside bag dont need take out. noisy environment dont need worry cannot hear cos your watch will tap you. - great to take on runs. dont need to bring phone - a lot of info on such small face. can see weather temp, date, time and notifications - great for quick at a glance notifications. esp while in a meeting

What would you do if money started falling from the sky? People walking along Fuk Wa Street in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, witnessed the baffling sight of banknotes floating down from above on Saturday afternoon (Dec 15). Videos posted online suggest that the notes were thrown from the roof of a building, fluttering through the air before landing on the busy street below. Passers-by can be seen eagerly grabbing the notes, with some climbing on to the roof of the subway exit to pick up the banknotes. Photos on social media show that the notes were of the HK$100 (SG$17.60) denomination. One Facebook user appeared to have picked up at least six notes. Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of someone distributing money at Fuk Wa Street, and told people not to pick up the money, said South China Morning Post (SCMP). Officers collected around HK$5,000, according to the report. A live video on the Facebook page of Epoch Cryptocurrency that began at 2.42pm showed a man dressed in a black hoodie saying in Cantonese: "I hope everyone here will pay attention to this important event… (I) don't know whether any of you will believe money can fall from the sky." The man is believed to be the owner of Epoch Cryptocurrency, a Facebook page that promotes cryptocurrency. The man is widely known online as "Coin Young Master" and his real name is Wong Ching-kit, reported SCMP. Bowen Press said that the 24-year-old man refuted claims that he was behind the incident when interviewed at his home. However, Agence France-Presse (AFP) later reported that he was arrested on Sunday for causing disorder in a public place, after he drove back to the neighbourhood in his Lamborghini. Wong had said in a Facebook post that he wanted to “help the poor by robbing the rich”.

A student studying at the National University of Singapore (NUS) fell eight stories to her death after trying to get into her residential hall room from a window. According to a report in The New Paper (TNP), the 18-year-old South Korean had locked herself out of her room on the seventh storey of Block C of Sheares Hall on Saturday (28 Oct). The Singapore Police Force (SPF) told Yahoo News Singapore it was alerted to a case of fall from height at 20 Heng Mui Keng Terrace at 11:38am on 28 October. “An 18-year-old woman was unconscious when conveyed to the National University Hospital where she subsequently succumbed to her injuries,” said SPF. Police are investigating the unnatural death. The residents were informed by email of the tragic event on Saturday afternoon. One resident told TNP that a wake was held for the student on Monday evening. https://sg.yahoo.com/news/nus-student-falls-death-locking-room-011752131.html

SEONGAM (AFP) - Sixteen people were killed and nine others seriously injured when a ventilation grate gave way while they were watching an outdoor pop concert in Seongam south of Seoul on Friday, rescuers said. “They were standing on the ventilation grate to get a better view when it collapsed under their weight,” a spokesman for the local fire services told AFP. Rescuers said 16 were confirmed dead, but added the death toll might rise with some of the injured understood to be in critical condition. Television reports said the 25 people fell more than 10 metres into an underground parking area when the grate collapsed. Amateur video footage obtained by the YTN news channel showed shocked spectators surrounding the collapsed grate as the popular all-girl K-pop band 4Minute, apparently oblivious to the accident, continued performing on the stage. More than 700 people were believed to be attending the outdoor concert. “There was a sudden, loud screaming, and when I turned it looked as if people were being sucked down into a hole,” one witness told YTN. A woman standing nearby said a great “cloud of dust” billowed up from the ventilation shaft after the grate collapsed. Most of the dead and injured were believed to be students, YTN said, adding that the concert organisers had repeatedly urged the spectators to move off the grate before it collapsed. South Korea has suffered a recent series of catastrophic accidents involving young victims, including the sinking of the Sewol ferry in April that left more than 300 dead, most of them high school students. In February, the roof caved in on a student-packed auditorium near the southern city of Gyeongju, killing 10 people and injuring more than 100. An investigation uncovered evidence of structural flaws and lax management controls. The Sewol disaster prompted government promises of a national review of safety standards, as it became clear that poor regulatory oversight was a major contributor to the scale of the tragedy. - See more at: http://www.straitstimes.com/lifestyle/music/story/14-feared-dead-collapse-s-korea-pop-concert-20141017#sthash.e5syEOdg.dpuf Bad year for SK.... Girl Narrowly Escapes as Escalator Floor Breaks Open Another escalator malfunction in China . A Chinese girl escaped unhurt as an escalator malfunctioned on Sunday at a shopping mall in Shenyang, northeast China's Liaoning Province. The girl, believed to be in her 20s, stepped onto a panel of flooring at the top of the escalator when it suddenly gave way. Staff at the mall soon shut down the escalator, and no one was injured. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtbdrIMa-Wo

FOUR elderly women suffered deep cuts, fractures and bruises at Punggol Plaza yesterday morning when the handrail of the escalator they were on suddenly stopped moving. The women, in their 70s and 80s, were just three steps from the top. As they were clutching on to the handrails, they lost their balance and fell backwards. Two ended up in a heap at the foot of the escalator, while the other two landed on the steps. Madam Kiong Mok Lan, 76, who was at the rear of the group, suffered the worst injuries. She had tried to put her hands out to stop the others from falling onto her, but the slim-built woman was unable to withstand their weight. She landed face down and fractured her left cheekbone, right hand and left leg. Her spectacles also broke, and her left eye was swollen and bruised. All the women suffered bruises and long scratches down their backs caused by the escalator's jagged metal edges. One of them, Madam Liew Poh Chan, 72, had deep cuts on both shins and was bleeding profusely. The women were taken to Changi General Hospital by ambulance, and later discharged. Madam Kiong was heading for breakfast at the mall at about 9am with her daughter-in-law's parents - Mr Yap Ah Kow, 77, and Madam Hoh Peck Tau, 72, - as well as family friends Madam Cheong Tai, 81, and Madam Liew. Mr Yap, Madam Hoh and Madam Cheong are Malaysians who came here for a holiday last Friday and were scheduled to go home today. The group had planned to visit Resorts World Sentosa after breakfast. Madam Kiong's daughter-in-law, Mrs Wendy Lim, 43, was also on the escalator, which connects the basement to the first floor. But the housewife and her father, Mr Yap, were unhurt. Career counsellor Gilbert Goh, who witnessed the incident, said he was having breakfast at a fast-food restaurant near the escalator when he heard something that 'sounded like thunder'. When he rushed out to help, he saw the four women sprawled along the escalator. 'I got a shock,' said Mr Goh, 49, a member of the opposition National Solidarity Party who had contested in the recent general election in Tampines GRC. When The Straits Times spoke to them at the hospital later, the women appeared shaken and tired. But they grew agitated when recounting the accident. Madam Hoh claimed one of the mall management officers said it happened because the women became giddy. 'She said that we are old and fell because we were feeling giddy. How is it possible that all four of us suffer from giddiness at the same time?' she said in Mandarin. Her son-in-law Andy Lim, 46, rushed to the mall after his wife told him what had happened, and asked a mall employee to test the escalator twice. Both times, he said, the handrail stopped intermittently. Mr Lim, who works in a training company, said it was 'very irresponsible' of the management to dismiss the incident as a minor one. When The Straits Times contacted the management office, an officer at first said what happened was 'normal' and just 'a big hoo-ha'. Another employee said the mall had never received any public feedback about the escalator being faulty. Yesterday afternoon, the escalator was cordoned off and inspected by workmen from a repair company. The mall said the escalators are maintained every month. Several shoppers and shop owners claimed that the particular escalator was often problematic. One shop owner, who has been there for seven years, said incidents are common. The Straits Times understands that the mall management has reported the incident to its insurance company. A check with several malls found that most service their escalators every month. VivoCity, for example, also deploys its technicians to check on escalators when it gets complaints. Faulty escalators are cordoned off and signs put up to inform shoppers they are being maintained, said a spokesman. Mr Lionel Tan, owner of FB Industries, a company which installs and maintains lifts and escalators, said accidents on escalators are common. He said escalators can stop moving suddenly when the safety switches are activated by users who stand too closely to the sides. But he said it is rare for the handrail to stop moving.

Since I saw someone posted about wish list for soccer, I thought maybe I can start a wish list for election swing voters. As usual, there will be die hard PAP supporters, and there will be hardcore opposition supporters. For these two groups of voters, please take your battle to where it is suppose to be. There is a thread started by @Radx for election battle, please fight there. http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2696413-the-next-general-elections-post-here/page-25 It is no secret that many elections around the world are won or lost because of the swing voters, these people are not fully supportive of one party only, and they vote base on what they believe is best for the country and themselves. The key lies in how to reach out to this group of voters. It seem like the government is not too interested in this group of voters, so let us tell them, how they can lost our votes ( or how the opposition can win us over). I feel that our government is a good manager, but not a good politician. Generally I am quite happy, there are good policies introduced, and there are bad ones. What I really want to see , is that they can admit whatever mistakes done, get it corrected and move on. It takes a great politician to admit mistakes, sometimes mistakes bring in votes. The era is different, things are different, people are different. Those (swing voters) who want to share your thoughts, come on in. cheers!!!
