  2. Were they drunk? Aftermath of the party * The damage was extensive * used paper plates and uneaten food were thrown into the pool. * The toilets were also choked and damaged. * it took the cleaners 6 hours to clean up * The family's visitors have, on occasion, parked their cars illegally, despite repeated reminders not to do so. * their $500 tenant deposit had been forfeited because of the incident. It was a poolside party that had fellow residents seeing red. MediaCorp has learnt that the management council of Mimosa Park condominium in Yio Chu Kang has banned 2006 Singapore Idol Hady Mirza and his family, who live in the development, from using its recreational facilities after a private party on Oct 2. It is understood that the council was not pleased by what it saw in the wake of that party at the condominium's poolside clubhouse. For one thing, used paper plates and uneaten food were thrown into the pool. The toilets were also choked and damaged. Cleaners had to be called in to clean up the mess to appease residents who wanted to use the facilities. The damage was extensive and it took the cleaners six hours to complete the task. This is not the first time Hady and his family of five - who have been living in a four-bedroom rented apartment in the condo for the last three years - have broken the rules, said chairman of the condominium's management council Leonard Lee. The family's visitors have, on occasion, parked their cars illegally, despite repeated reminders not to do so. As a result, the wheels of their cars have been clamped on a number of occasions, said Mr Lee. But the mess in the pool proved to be the last straw. Last week, the chairman sent a letter to the family informing them that their $500 tenant deposit had been forfeited because of the incident. The family's access passes have also been cancelled, which means they cannot use the shared facilities - the pool, gym and squash court. The ban is for a period of six months. In the strongly-worded letter, Mr Lee said the episode "has caused severe inconvenience to our residents and other users" and, as a result, "additional expenses" had to be incurred to restore the premises. He added: "We are holding you responsible for all costs ... we shall be forfeiting your tenant deposit which will be used towards the partial cost of the cleaning operations". Mr Lee did not say how much "all costs" amounted to but added the council reserved the right to recover any other costs "that may have incurred as a result of your irresponsible behaviour". When contacted, 30-year-old Hady declined to comment on the matter, saying "it's personal". However, MediaCorp understands that his mother, Madam Mardiana Ahmad, has sent a letter of apology to the management council.

  4. http://www.dw.com/en/german-prosecutors-raid-facilities-of-carmaker-audi/a-42464733 Prosecutors and police officers have extended their raids on Audi facilities in the German cities of Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. The carmaker is suspected of having manipulated more cars than hitherto acknowledged. Munich prosecutors and police officers from the southern German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg on Tuesday searched a number of Audi offices in Ingolstadt, as well as the carmaker's production facility in Neckarsulm, the Süddeutsche Zeitung daily reported. It said a total of 18 prosecutors and an unspecified number of police participated in the raids. Audi, one of Volkswagen's 12 brands, confirmed the searches, saying it was fully cooperating with the prosecutors. The report said the raids were carried out because Audi was believed to have manipulated the emissions levels in more than 200,000 cars for both the European and US markets. Audi stands accused of switching off software that controls waste gas purification systems while the cars were on the road. Large-scale manipulation By contrast, the software was switched on when cars were tested in the lab. The first raids on Audi took place in March 2017 when prosecutors looked into allegations that the company had rigged emissions levels in 80,000 cars for the US market. Its parent company, Volkswagen, had admitted that Audi had participated in cheating efforts. Prior to Tuesday's raids, prosecutors had searched the homes of six current or former Audi engineers responsible for engine technology.

  6. Disparity in tertiary education facilities by Kwek Jian Qiang 04:45 AM Dec 26, 2011 Singapore has often been accorded the honour of having one of the best education systems. Our students rank high in their scores, from mathematics to other subjects. There are, though, significant disparities in the quality of learning environments. When my grandmother visited Singapore this year, one of her most striking comments was when she saw a sparkling, shiny Institute of Technical Education (ITE) "skyscraper" campus. Her first impression was that, in such a quality school environment, the students would be the best and brightest in Singapore. It took me a while to convince her otherwise and her look of dismay was apparent. Indeed, a question should be raised: In a system where people are rewarded according to merit, why are our best and brightest not getting the best learning environments? I once attended a seminar at ITE College East. The interior was like a plush hotel: Sleek floors, plush lecture theatre chairs, high-quality tables - quality exceeding that found in our polytechnics and junior colleges (JC). From the exterior, with an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a stadium stand, it looked like it was made for the Youth Olympics. What saddened me, though, was the graffiti on the tables and chairs. Apparently, the students do not cherish what they have. Should any JC or polytechnic student have access to such quality facilities, I have no doubt they would appreciate it better. There is a need to equalise government spending on school facilities. Campuses such as Anderson JC's and Victoria JC's pale in comparison to ITE College East's. Our brightest students, who will become Singapore's future leaders, should get the best facilities in order to excel and grow. We should reward according to merit. The writer is a JC student.
