  1. 'American Idol' alum Antonella Barba pleads guilty, faces 10 years to life https://www.msn.com/en-sg/news/world/american-idol-alum-antonella-barba-pleads-guilty-faces-10-years-to-life/ar-AAF8aT7?ocid=ientp_edu NORFOLK, Virginia – Antonella Barba, formerly of "American Idol" and "Fear Factor" fame, likely will spend at least a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of at least 400 grams of fentanyl with intent to distribute in federal court in Virginia on Tuesday. The guilty plea carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, according to a plea agreement filed in federal court. She could face a possible life sentence and up to $10 million in fines, as well as asset forfeiture, according to the agreement. The 32-year-old singer, who grew up on the Jersey Shore, was first arrested on Duke Street in Norfolk in October 2018. She originally was charged with selling or intending to sell 100 grams or more of heroin, according to Virginia court records. She denied the initial charges. Those state charges were later supplanted by federal charges of possession with intent and conspiracy, according to court records. According to a statement of facts filed in connection with the plea agreement, investigators had been tracking Justin Michael "Cali" Isaac of California, believing he "was a source for kilogram quantities of cocaine and heroin." On Oct. 11, 2018, they determined he was heading to a "stash" apartment in Norfolk from Washington, D.C., but then listened in on a phone call in which Isaac said he was sending a woman to deliver drugs, according to the statement. Investigators staking out the apartment found Barba there in a car, a shoebox of fentanyl on the floor, according to the statement. Isaac and several other defendants also were named in the same federal indictment as Barba. Barba was one of the top 16 contestants on the singing competition's sixth season in 2007before she was eliminated. She also appeared on "Fear Factor" in 2012. Barba had been confined to a family home in Point Pleasant under court order. It was unclear if she remains there or had been taken into custody following her plea. Barba's attorney, James Broccoletti, declined to comment. pls help to delete this post, dont knwo why double posting, thanks Mod

  4. Model-DJ Tenashar faces drug-related charges including cocaine consumption SINGAPORE - Well-known local model and club DJ Tenashar has been taken to court on drug charges. The former FHM Singapore cover girl, whose full name is Debbie Valerie Tenashar Long, is facing two counts of drug consumption. One involved cocaine and the other involved psilocin - a substance found in most psychedelic mushrooms. The 32-year-old Singaporean is also facing one count each of importing psilocin - a controlled drug - and being in possession of nimetazepam or Erimin-5. Long, who was first charged in court on May 26, allegedly committed the offences in October 2015. She is now remanded at Changi Women's Prison and appeared in court via video-link on Friday (June 22). The court heard that the prosecution was not ready as the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority is currently looking into a possible animal cruelty-related charge against her. Court documents said Long allegedly imported two containers each containing a packet of off-white/brown substance at Changi Airport Terminal 1, arrival belt 19, at around 10.20pm on Oct 28, 2015. The containers were labelled "Psilocybe Atlantis Forbidden Fruit". The contents, which weighed about 42g, were analysed and later found to contain psilocin, a compound which online open chemistry database PubChem says is found in most psychedelic mushrooms. Long is also accused of consuming psilocin and another substance known as benzoylecgonine, a major metabolite of cocaine, on Oct 28, 2015. At around 3am the next day, she is said to have had an Erimin-5 tablet in her possession in a sixth-storey unit at The Quayside condominium in Robertson Quay. News of her alleged drug-related offences first made the headlines in April 2016 when The New Paper reported that Long and her then boyfriend, Mr Thorsten Nolte, who is in his 40s, were wanted by the Central Narcotics Bureau for failing to report back after they were arrested for drug-related offences in 2015. Long had earlier told TNP that she had been dating Mr Nolte since February 2015. He was then separated from his wife, local celebrity Jamie Yeo. This was shortly after Ms Yeo, now 41, told lifestyle magazine 8 Days that she was divorcing Mr Nolte, whom she had married in 2010. The divorce has since been finalised. Mr Nolte's name did not appear in Long's court documents. Earlier news reports stated that Long was the first Singaporean to be featured on the cover of Playboy Thailand magazine in October 2013. That same month, she also became the first Singaporean to make British music magazine DJ Mag's list of Top 100 DJs, snagging the No. 87 spot. She was the only solo female DJ to make the list that year. Long, who is represented by lawyers Eugene Thuraisingam and Syazana Yahya, was offered bail of $30,000. She will be back in court on July 18. If convicted of drug consumption, Long can be jailed for up to 10 years and fined up to $20,000 on each charge. She faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted of importing psilocin.

  8. Formula One chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has said the US Grand Prix is on the brink of being axed from next year's calendar. In a remarkable twist to the ongoing story, it was believed Tavo Hellmund's Full Throttle Productions owned the rights to host the race, scheduled for November 18 in Austin, Texas, next year. However, Ecclestone has revealed the contract with Hellmund was recently cancelled after he was found to be in breach. This has left Ecclestone negotiating with track developers, Circuit of The Americas (COTA), who yesterday halted work on construction. COTA claimed in a statement issued that "the contract between Formula One and Circuit of The Americas has not been conveyed to Circuit of The Americas per a previously agreed upon timetable". That has angered Ecclestone who claims the reason why no contract has been issued is because he has yet to receive a guarantee or a letter of credit that he will be paid. "We've done everything we bloody well can do to make this race happen," Ecclestone said. Asked if the USGP was in danger of being dropped ahead of the final World Motor Sport Council meeting in New Delhi on December 7 when the 2012 calendar is officially ratified, Ecclestone said: "Yes, it will be, for sure, 100 per cent." COTA now has three weeks to resolve the crisis with Ecclestone, otherwise there will be no return next year to the United States after what has already been a four-year absence in a vital market for F1. Explaining how the situation has spiralled, Ecclestone said: "We had an agreement with Full Throttle Productions. "Everything was signed and sealed, but we kept putting things off like the dates, various letters of credit and things that should have been sent, but nothing ever happened. "Then these other people (COTA) came on the scene, saying that they wanted to do things, but that they had problems with Tavo. "They said they had the circuit, and that they wanted an agreement with me. I told them they had to sort out the contract with Tavo, which they said they would. "But that has gone away now because we've cancelled Tavo's contract as he was in breach. "We've waited six months for him to remedy the breach. He knows full well why we've cancelled. He's happy. "But these other people haven't got a contract. All we've asked them to do is get us a letter of credit. "We are looking for security for money they are going to have to pay us. That is via a letter of credit, normally from a bank. "If people don't have the money they find it difficult to get the letter of credit, and so we don't issue a contract." With the clock ticking on the future of the USGP, Ecclestone is now simply looking for "a guarantor", to assure him if COTA fail to pay then there is a reserve. "It's probably an old-fashioned way of going about things, needing payment, but that's business," Ecclestone said. "It's like buying a house. Before you buy that house, and before you get all the paperwork, you make sure you've got the money." When contacted, representatives for the Circuit of The Americas declined to comment. Last month's announcement of a street race in New Jersey, featuring Manhattan as a backdrop, which will take place in 2013 has further complicated matters for all concerned with the GP in Austin. That much was made clear yesterday by Texas state comptroller Susan Combs who said New Jersey had the potential to affect the economic impact of their race, adding that the annual $25m of public funding, which would effectively cover the sanctioning fee collected by Ecclestone and which is deemed crucial to the race

  14. this is not actually new news as it was brought into attention by one UK minister recently as well i'm just wondering where is all the 'wisdom' by the people to spend wisely judging by crazy increase rate of property prices, share prices went up and down and upUp, and the COE just jumped 20% here it is just crazy. i just feel that all is not well YET with the economy at large it will be, but meanwhile let's not be too haste and being suck into buying 'hugely inflated' (just IMHO) product companies are all announcing profits and less losses recently it shld not be surprised to us that it is nearing end of the year, and companies need to blurt out good news most of the 'good news' is due to the fact of major retrenchment excerices... maybe just me ranting... so here goes with the news: from STi http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_427548.html SINGAPORE must be prepared for the possibility of a sluggish world economy or even a 'double-dip' in 2010, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said on Wednesday. Immediate improvements seen in the US economy and around the world were primarily due to agressive government stimulus packages and a correction in private sector inventories, he noted. 'We have yet to see a firm or sustainable rebound in private spending, that can underpin global economic growth in 2010 and beyond,' said Mr Tharman at the Singapore Exchange's (SGX's) 10th anniversary celebration. 'This is why we can only be cautiously optimistic about the next few years, globally and in Singapore,' he added. A 'double dip' recession - also known as W-shaped - refers to an economy that emerges from a recession with a short period of growth, but quickly falls back into recession. Singapore's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 20.7 per cent in the second quarter, signalling a rebound in the economy after four consecutive quarters of decline. Still, the government has forecasted the economy to contract by 4 to 6 per cent this year. The country's financial sector is showing signs of recovery, with assets of the 20 largest fund managers in Singapore growing 23 per cent in the first half of 2009, said Mr Tharman. Although overall assets for the asset management industry declined by 26 per cent to $864 billion in 2008 from a year earlier - and the corporate debt market shrank by 2 per cent to $168 billion in the same period - this held up better than the general market performance, he added.
  15. 2nd UPDATE:Merrill:GM Needs $15 Billion,Bankruptcy 'Not Impossible'http://www.dj.com/ July 02, 2008: 04:43 PM EST Updates stock price, crude oil price) By Ed Welsch and Cynthia Koons Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- General Motors Corp.'s (GM) stock fell 15% Thursday after a Wall Street bank warned the automaker could stumble into bankruptcy, and oil prices hit a record high. Merrill Lynch warned Wednesday morning GM is burning through cash faster than investors realize and may even face bankruptcy if the auto market worsens and it can't raise enough capital. Merrill downgraded GM shares to underperform from buy. At the same time, crude oil futures settled at a new high of $143.57 a barrel Wednesday, adding more pressure on the automaker which has already seen sales of its sport-utility vehicle and pick-up truck sales fall sharply. GM's stock, at $9.98, is at its lowest price in at least 36 years. GM's troubles have weighed on the broader stock market, helping to push the the Dow Jones Industrial Average into bear territory. The Dow fell 166 points to 11,215 points. A GM spokeswoman declined to comment on Merrill's report. "Bankruptcy is not impossible if the market continues to deteriorate and significant incremental capital is not raised," the Merrill analysts wrote, while also increasing the firm's expectations for GM's losses this year and projecting the automaker will report a loss next year as well. Merrill believes GM will need to raise $15 billion in capital to fund its operations for the next two years - more than the between $5 billion and $10 billion analysts had previously forecast. The capital raise would come partly from existing credit facilities, with the remainder through a combination of secured debt, asset sales or even by effectively borrowing from the United Auto Worker's independent trust created to fund retiree health care, the Merrill analysts said. Not all analysts were as bearish about GM's cash needs. Shelly Lombard, an auto analyst at Gimme Credit, said while GM may need additional liquidity, some of the fund-raising required may just be cash for an "emotional security blanket" to assuage investors' anxiety. GM could secure some of its more profitable international operations to issue debt against. In its most recent earnings report, GM's pretax earnings from international results - helped by growth in Asia and Latin America - nearly doubled to $1 billion, while its pretax losses in North America quadrupled to $ 812 million. "When we look at the assets that are available, the existing term loans outstanding are securitized by primarily domestic property, plant and equipment, " Kingman Penniman, president of KDP Investment Advisors, said. "I don't know how much is left there as a cushion. We have the impression most of their foreign assets have not been securitized for a debt package." Fundraising Challenge GM's fundraising options have narrowed significantly as its fortunes and credit ratings have declined. The automaker's falling share price could make it more difficult for the company to raise convertible debt. With GM's bonds trading as low as they are - the 8.375% notes due 2033 are actively changing hands around 57 cents for a yield of 15% - the company will have to pay extraordinarily high finance costs in the unsecured junk bond market if it attempts to drum up funds there. In its first-quarter report released in early May, GM said it believed it had enough capital to meet its requirements this year. The company said it may take several actions to conserve liquidity "if the current adverse economic conditions persist or deteriorate further," including cutting structural costs further, selling non-core assets and delaying or cutting some capital spending. The company also said in its report it could cut its dividend or raise capital through the public markets or through debt if necessary. Merrill's report throws cold water on budding optimism that followed GM's June sales report Tuesday, which showed late-month sales incentives helped the Detroit automaker post a slimmer loss in sales than competitors Toyota Motor Corp. , Ford Motor Co. (F) and Chrysler LLC. "We believe that the weakness in demand and deteriorating mix through the first half of 2008 are just the beginning of what is shaping up to be a more severe downturn than even the most bearish industry observers expected," the Merrill analysts wrote. Derivatives investors already have an extremely negative view of GM. The cost of insuring GM's bonds has already fallen to levels that imply investors are positioning for bankruptcy. The derivatives presently imply investors must pay a $3.7 million fee on top of $500,000 annually to insure $10 million of GM's bonds for five years. That has risen from a fee of $2.35 million within just the past few weeks. High-Yield Market To Suffer It's an ugly scenario for all of the U.S. automakers and also for the junk bond market, in which the companies are major issuers. With around $200 billion notional auto and auto finance debt in the markets, "significant auto sector dislocation" could be a catalyst for broader deterioration in high yield," said Jeffrey Rosenberg, a Banc of America analyst, said. The cost of insuring Ford Motor Co.'s (F) bonds has similarly been rising over the past few weeks as a result of this bearish sentiment about the health of the U.S. auto market. Ford has an advantage to GM, however, in that the company secured $18 billion of new debt in late 2006, before the credit markets seized up. -By Ed Welsch and Cynthia Koons, Dow Jones Newswires; 201-938-5451; http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articl...20_FORTUNE5.htm rainy days coming better stop spending unnecessarily. editted... storm and hurricane coming. those who can barely afford to drive better give up while u can.
  16. June 11, 2008 M'sia's Mahathir faces accusation of making threat against judges KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN lawyers demanded an investigation on Wednesday into a judge's claim that former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad once threatened to oust judges if he disagreed with their verdicts. High Court Judge Ian Chin's accusation provides fodder for opposition leaders who want the courts to review key verdicts stretching back more than a decade because they insist that government interference has tainted many decisions. Judge Chin told an open court Monday that Dr Mahathir - who led Malaysia between 1981 and 2003 - made a 'thinly veiled threat' to judges who attended a conference in 1997 that they could be removed 'if any judgment is to his dislike'. Dr Mahathir's aide, Sufi Yusoff, said the former leader would respond to the accusation 'in due time'. Bar Council President Ambiga Sreenevasan urged the government on Wednesday to conduct an immediate investigation, stressing that 'elements of interference have to be put down once and for all'. 'Clearly there are many things that plagued the judiciary,' she told The Associated Press. 'We have to ensure this interference in the judiciary never happens again.' Dr Mahathir has long been accused by opposition leaders of interfering in the courts. He dismissed or suspended several top judges for alleged misconduct in 1988 in what was widely considered a move to quash the independence of the judiciary. Judge Chin made his claim while presiding over an election dispute in eastern Sarawak state, saying he wanted to disclose details of his previous cases related to politics. Chin also alleged that judges were sent to a seminar in 1997 in 'an attempt to indoctrinate (them) to hold the view that the government interest (was) more important than all else when we are considering our judgment'. A panel set up by the government to investigate possible judicial corruption said last month that it believed that prominent government and judicial figures - including Dr Mahathir - may have been involved in a conspiracy to manipulate the appointment of top judges. The claims surfaced after the opposition released a video last September that showed a lawyer speaking on the phone to a former top judge in 2001 about fixing judges' promotions. Dr Mahathir last month challenged the government to charge him in court after the Cabinet told the Attorney General's office to investigate the video further. -- AP http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...82.html?vgnmr=1 The Storeyline June 11, 2008 M'sian judges allegedly sent to 'boot camp' for indoctrination KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIAN judges were sent to an indoctrination 'boot camp' to pressure them into making decisions that favoured the government, a senior judge said according to reports on Wednesday. In explosive allegations made in open court, Justice Ian Chin also said he was threatened by former premier Mahathir Mohamad over high-profile cases, one involving a close associate of the then-leader. 'Now, though he is no longer the prime minister and so no longer able to carry out his threat to remove judges, the coalition party that he led is still around,' he said. Justice Chin made the allegations, which were picked up by the national press on Wednesday, before hearing a dispute over results of March general elections in Sarawak state on Borneo island. He said he was targeted by Dr Mahathir after refusing to award 'astronomical' payouts in two libel cases in 1997, while a judge who agreed with the then-premier's views was promoted to the Federal Court. Afterwards, Justice Chin reportedly said he was packed off to a five-day boot camp with selected judges and judicial officers. It was without any doubt 'an attempt to indoctrinate those attending the boot camp to hold the view that the government interest as being more important than all else when we are considering our judgement', he said. Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenavasan called for an inquiry into the allegations, which she said were 'both startling and damning.' 'Judges, both present and past, must be encouraged to come forward and provide information on any such instances of interference so that further action may be taken,' she said. Dr Mahathir stood down in 2003 and his successor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has been criticised for failing to carry out his promises to tackle corruption, which is deeply entrenched in politics and business. Justice Chin's allegations add to the pall cast over the country's judiciary by a recent royal commission into a sensational Dr Mahathir-era video clip that showed a top lawyer brokering judicial appointments with the help of politicians. The commission found in May that there was evidence of an 'insidious' conspiracy to influence the appointment of judges, and the government promised to investigate those implicated. Dr Mahathir has challenged the authorities to charge him. 'I want them to charge me in court. Only then will I have the opportunity to expose more conflicts faced by the judges, including those who have implicated me,' he said. -- AFP http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_246665.html

  18. ST 2 April 2008 HOME-GROWN tech giant Creative has found itself in the middle of an online firestorm after it threatened an American user who modified drivers for its Sound Blaster sound cards. The user, known only by his online moniker, Daniel-K, had modified drivers - software that allows hardware devices to function on a computer - to allow the Sound Blaster Audigy cards to be used with Microsoft's Vista operating system. Claiming the cards had limited functionality on Vista, he set about modifying them and distributing them online and asking for donations in return. But last Friday, Mr Phil O'Shaughnessy, who is the vice-president (corporate communications) of Creative Labs, which is based in the United States, posted a public warning to Daniel-K on the company's official forum. Mr O'Shaughnessy warned Daniel-K to stop distributing the modified drivers, and accused him of infringing Creative's intellectual property rights. He also warned him to stop soliciting donations, saying that by doing so, Daniel-K was 'profiting from something that you do not own'. News of the warning soon surfaced on several websites in the United States and elsewhere, including local forum Hardwarezone, and sparked a huge backlash against Creative on the Internet. The initial warning itself attracted more than 2,000 comments, with many threatening a boycott of Creative's products. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of posts on the subject have cropped up worldwide. Many users of the modified drivers are saying they did so because, according to them, the Audigy sound card's features are not fully compatible with Vista: When paired with Creative's drivers, only their basic features are available. But when used with the modified drivers, advanced audio features like Dolby Digital and THX, which enable users to hear realistic surround- sound in movies, are unlocked and become available. Creative takes issue with this. In his posting, Mr O'Shaughnessy said that if the company chooses to unlock features with some cards and not with others, it is a 'business decision that only we have the right to make'. But users retort that since the packaging for the cards states that they are 'Vista-compatible', they expect drivers with a full list of functions when used with the operating system. Others have jumped into the fray and are distributing the modified drivers on file-sharing sites like BitTorrent - for free. Some Singapore netizens have also expressed anger at Creative, but many others are also defending the company because it is a home-grown icon. User desertengineer wrote on the Hardwarezone forum: 'While Daniel-K probably didn't do it with ill intent, asking for money while doing it is a big no-no, and puts Creative in an awkward position. Sometimes they have to respond.' Creative Singapore declined to comment, while there was no response from its US office. Several users have noted that in the online world, where respect for intellectual property rights is frequently disregarded, the flaming of Creative is no surprise. Apple Computer, for example, was attacked by numerous users last year after it threatened that a software update would render illegally hacked versions of its wildly popular iPhone useless. But legal experts have criticised such attacks by users. In a New York Times report last September on the threats against Apple, assistant dean Noah Funderburg of the University of Alabama's School of Law said: 'We have a free marketplace. 'Buy a product, including using it on the terms accompanying the purchase, or don't buy it. And learn to live with not always getting everything you want.' CROSSING THE LINE 'While Daniel-K probably didn't do it with ill intent, asking for money while doing it is a big no-no, and puts Creative in an awkward position. Sometimes they have to respond.' DESERTENGINEER, a user on the Hardwarezone forum, referring to the American user who modified drivers for Creative's Sound Blaster sound cards
