From September, the professional jobs networking site LinkedIn will pilot a new job-matching platform in Singapore that focuses on candidates’ skill sets, rather than educational qualifications and past job titles. This is to give jobseekers a better shot at gaining access to new employment opportunities. The Skills Path initiative, supported by the National Jobs Council, will allow applicants here to complete skill assessment tests unique to the job roles they are applying for, so as to demonstrate their competencies. They therefore do not need to rely solely on their traditional qualifications to get a foot in the door. Employers may then evaluate candidates based on their skills rather than judge them solely on their degrees, job titles and networks to fill a vacancy, LinkedIn said on Saturday (Aug 14). For a start, the pilot platform will feature one job advertisement each from eight different companies that have already come on board the initiative, with plans to get more companies to join. The employers are: Property developer CapitaLand, OCBC bank, food delivery firm FoodPanda, NTUC Enterprise, pharmaceutical company Zuellig Pharma, and e-commerce sites Carousell, Lazada and Zalora. They will put up job advertisements for six selected job roles, including customer service, data analyst, project manager and sales development, LinkedIn said. One worked in a bank. Another was a former journalist. And now, they are studying to be doctors. They are two of the 81 students in this year's intake of future clinicians at Duke-NUS Medical School, Singapore's only graduate medical school. Mr Lim Chun Chai, 39, a father of two, was a vice-president at OCBC Bank for nine years. He was responsible for processing and documenting corporate loans. Ms Hoe Pei Shan, 31, is a former journalist at The New Paper, The Straits Times and The Business Times. If they complete their four-year graduate programme, they will be awarded a medical degree in 2023. Before enrolling at Duke-NUS, both Mr Lim and Ms Hoe took the Medical College Admission Test administered by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Why all those who quit are normally good employees? Here’s 8 reasons why! It is not all difficult to retain a good, hard-working employee in Singapore. The Lion City has an excellent working environment, salary packages are attractive and rank high up in Asia. But just why big companies will often force employees out of the door? Just why good employees leave? Well, because they simply know their talent can be realized somewhere else. If companies can’t provide a harmonious workplace, it won’t be hard to see why they can’t hold on to the talented employees. A consultancy report from CEB said that usually 33% of top-ranked employees normally have this conflict with their employers and would have started seeking for greener pastures just few weeks into their job! Once a company loses the heart of their top-ranked employees, the group will not just choose to say I QUIT! They will also lose interest in their job. Mr Michael E. Kibler from Corporate Balance Concepts INC, an employee coaching firm, has been researching why employees quit their companies. He attributes this to “executive brownout”. To put it simply, no battery already! Staff affected by this phenomenon become disengaged, demotivated and lose interest in their jobs. The more usual symptoms will be disengagement, discontent and lethargy. On the surface, their job performance is not bad, but they are secretly going downhill, and the exit door is where they are headed. Companies who want to avoid this from happening can try to avoid these 8 workplace practices, which normally get under the skin of top-rated employees. #1. Don’t put up too much rules Yes. Simple as that. Don’t make it like a school, where there are even restrictions on meal times and toilet breaks. Employees feel restrained simply by that and the doubts will start to creep in. All are working professionals, not little children! #2. All are equal In the eyes of the law, all are equal. But it shouldn’t be the same at a workplace. The elite will feel left out should the boss treat all equally. They will think that all the rewards and benefits they deserve aren’t any different from those who have poor work performance. #3. Enduring poor work performance If a company doesn’t act in helping an employee snap out from poor performance, such as sending him for courses, he will soon drag down the whole organization. The company got to solve this problem fast and not act blur. #4. Non acknowledgment of the talented ones Who doesn’t like to be recognized for the hard work put in? Show some love, lah! A relationship between company and employee is like watering a plant. If you don’t give it TLC (Tender, Love, Care), how do you expect it to grow. You must show care and concern for your employee! Remember, they are not robots! They are made of flesh and blood! #6. Future When distributing work, give them a perspective on how this will help in their career advancement. Don’t just simply shove them work and give them deadline! #7. Let them pursue other interests! Google normally gives out 20% of an employee’s worktime to let them pursue their own interest, and this should be of beneficial value to the company. It is vital as employees will enter a FLOW mentality. It is one that allows employees to enjoy their work, and expand their capability. #8. Make the workplace interesting If employees can’t enjoy sticking around a workplace, the company really got to start thinking. Ever heard of the saying, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy? Go Google HQ find out, look into their HQ, see how fun it is to work there! To sum it up, a good company shouldn’t be sending out terse notices all the time. They should learn to mix heavy work with great fun. That is the ultimate recipe to a conducive work environment.

Summary. Employer fine $1 per every minute she late for work even after he give her allowances to start work at 9.30 instead of 9am and she still being frequent late for work. Than she lost an excel file she is working on and she was told to backup their work but she didn't and thus deduct 70% of her.. pay. Under contract terms of her 1yr contract, she need to pay back 3 months salary should she leave company in her contract terms. And employer refused to pay her whole month of march because she was absent without leave for 2 days. ........ So is employer being fair to employee in this incident that happened.

While unhappy SMRT bus drivers displayed their frustration by going on strike, a Serbian Fiat worker has his own way of showing unhappiness - by vandalising 31 unassembled Fiat 500L body shells. The worker scratched profanities and offensive messages aimed at the management of the plant on the cars' bodies . The trade unions commented that the workers had been forced to work long hours and had been denied of cigarette breaks. "It is believed that a single man damaged the cars because the message's handwriting is the same. This is probably due to tough conditions under which the workers operate, the younger ones can bear it but it is very difficult for the older ones. They work in three shifts, under great pressure from management, and the average monthly wage is 34,000 dinars," said Zoran Mihajlovic, President of Fiat Automobili Srbija's trade union. The damaged body shells were re-painted while an investigation has been launched to identify the worker involved.

Hi all, need ask advice/ opinion: i left the company about 1 year ago. yesterday i just found that the company use my particular, especially my IC to register a private tender project. is that a legal? i'm not happy about this. of course there is no lost from my side. so should I do something? can I do a police report? i mean what the police can do? or need hire a lawyer? I mean for that case, i have no loss something, but how about in the future the company do something more funny2 again? what i want, just do not want the company use my name again for anything. thanks for any advice/ comment.

Employer's horror: She has to bear medical expenses after maid gives birth STOMPer Sabrina was appalled after she got saddled with medical bills and repatriation costs for her maid who gave birth within three months of employment. The STOMPer wonders how the maid got through the medical check-ups without the pregnancy setting off any alarm. The STOMPer wrote: "I employed an Indonesian maid to look after my mother (not living with me) in February this year but returned her to the maid agency last Friday (May 04) and got an alarming piece of news yesterday (May 08) -- that she has given birth to a healthy baby boy in the office of the maid agency! "How can this be possible since she was only in Singapore for less than three months. Now, the maid agency says that according to MOM's (Ministry of Manpower) rules and regulations, the employer is to bear all the medical fees and costs for repatriating the maid and the baby. "In the first place, the maid should be at least 6 months pregnant when she arrived in Singapore -- how could she have passed the full medical check-up? "Furthermore, the medical check-up is handled by the maid agency, not me! "As such, shouldn't the maid agency be responsible for the costs or go after the doctor who did the medical check-up? "I checked through the contract that I signed with the maid agency -- under clause 15, it's stated that 'in the event FDW (Foreign Domestic Worker) falls ills or suffers personal injury...employer shall bear all the medical costs'. "Can an 'unexpected' birth be classified as an illness or injury? "The agency is going to discharge the maid and the baby from NUH today (May 09). "Is there any of you out there who has a similar story to share? Is there any immediate action I should take to protect my rights? "I am very very sad. Staff from MOM called me up yesterday too and surprisingly, she told me that they are not going to mediate the matter involving. "She advised me to settle the bill and send the maid back as soon as possible and said 'it has nothing to do with MOM as the ministry issued work permits based on medical reports'. "Who should I turn to then?"

Volkswagen has agreed to stop its Blackberry servers sending emails to some of its employees when they are off-shift. The German automaker made the move following complaints that staff's work and home lives were becoming blurred. The new policy covers employees in Germany working under trade union negotiated contracts. Under the arrangement, servers stop routing emails 30 minutes after the end of employees' shifts, and then start again 30 minutes before they return to work. The staff can still use their devices to make calls and the rule does not apply to senior management. "We wanted to take a preventative approach to tackling the issue," said Gunnar Killian, VW's works council spokesman. "At Volkswagen flexitime is between 0730-1745, with our new arrangement workers can only receive emails between 0700 and 1815." So chio bu saliva is the secret to delicious pastries! STOMPer eeleen was disgusted by this cake shop employee who was seen swiping off excess cream filling from cookies she was preparing and then licking them off her fingers. Said the STOMPer: "I was with my nephew decorating a cake at The Icing Room at Jurong Point yesterday (Nov 27) when I saw this really disgusting employee filling cookies with cream. "She was swiping off excess cream from each cookie with her bare fingers and then licking them off, before handling more cookies and filling! "She did this for the entire tray of cookies which were to be for sale later! "I also noticed that the other employees of this bakery were handling ingredients like fruit with their bare hands instead of using gloves. "This is very unhygienic and I don't think I will ever go back to that bakery again for cookies and cakes they prepare." Video here

Hi all, Have you ever conduct a dismissal exercise before? A friend was given a task to sack an employee but find it difficult and an emotional thing to execute. This is his 1st time doing so. The staff (barely a year with the company) hasn't done anything really wrong. But is someone who lacks initiatives at work given his level and not well-liked by other staff for his bo-chapness in handling users' issues. Come in on time and leave office on the dot. Even the way he sat also invited complaints that he is a sloppy person. The staff has also been told about his shortcomings earlier. The driver of a Lamborghini Gallardo and his female passenger were killed in a one-car traffic accident in Wuppertal, Germany. Witnesses at the scene said the yellow supercar was being driven too fast for the wet motorway. An employee of the automaker, or one of its dealerships, was giving a test drive to a 28-year-old woman when the accident took place. Others on the road said the Lambo was dangerously overtaking other cars, using the median to speed past some on the highway. Eventually, the car launched into the air, slammed into a street light, and caught fire. The driver was killed instantly, but the 28-year-old passenger managed to escape. Hello everyone... came across this crossroad recently and wish to seek sis/bros here for some opinions. Just hit 30 few months back. My online company has just been acquired by a relatively huge UK firm. Financially, I'm decent I suppose & I have good standing with my CEO. However, I'm faced with a dilemma. 2 yrs back my predecessors' started my current company. I was one of the sales guy in the co. Due to some infernal affairs cum politics, they wanted to liquidate the co mainly as the co is in the red for some mths. Not willing to leave my customers in the lurch, I took up the reins of my firm from my former GM & Sales Director. Mind you, the co is bleeding cash every month from all imaginable expenses from payroll to rental. Believe me you wont understand how hard it is to pay a relatively low 2 grand rental and with the cleaning company chasing you for backlog $200 monthly payment. The situation is dire. Thankfully, after taking over for almost a yr, I manage to bring my co from the red into the black (4 mths back). Mind you, I'm not a battle harden-trained biz man like many sis/bros here. My 1st biz as a cafe propritior fail with flying colours when I am 24 within 6months. My 2nd biz running a gaming lanshop (my passion) sink within 1 yr after my partner left me. I was 25 then. After two biz failures, I went for a sales job for a 1.4 grand monthly to pay the bills. (I was in IT & customer service & HR previously which bears no relevance hence the low pay.) With endless door knocking & cold calling & rejections I've managed to acquire a pool of paying clients that pull my co into the game. Yes, I'm in sales (not account servicing, just sales), the lowest rung of the food chain. :) Now that my co is bought over & me reverting to an employee again ...I'm wondering if I should start afresh again? I am thinking going into the same line as what I do now, which means start from 0 again, but I love business. However last mth, I had a few VERY enticing offers (1 is to manage a co's sg team. the other job offer ans only to the country manager) which throws me off balance. Both pays well enough for me to hesitate on my new biz venture. What will you do if you are in my shoes? Your opinions appreciated

The independent church paid one employee between $500,001 and $550,000 in its last financial year, checks by The Straits Times showed.
