  1. Autocar UK has taken the hot new CLA 45 AMG for a spin a few days after reviewing its cousin, the A 45 AMG. Both cars share the same all-wheel drive platform, engine and transmission. The CLA 45 AMG measures 4,630mm long, which is a significant 338mm longer than the A 45 AMG. It also carries an extra 30kg of mass as compared to the hatchback. Despite all these, Mercedes claims that the CLA 45 AMG shares the same century sprint timing and top speed as the A 45 AMG. On paper, the four-door coupe seemed as fun to drive as the A 45 AMG. So, let's hear what reviewer Steve Sutcliffe has to say from his driving experience. The CLA 45 AMG is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which is good for 360bhp and 450Nm of max torque, making it the most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder engine in production in the world. The engine is mated to a SPEEDSHIFT DCT seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The sprint from 0 to 100km/h takes a mere 4.6 seconds.
  2. MG is developing a range of turbocharged, direct-injected gasoline engines which will be launched in China at the end of 2014, and arriving in Europe a year later. These engines include 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre force-fed units as well as a 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit that claims to rival Ford's Ecoboost unit. Given that Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine has been named the 2012 'International Engine of the Year' - MG has got some very serious work to do. "Our benchmark for the 1.0-litre has to be the Ford Ecoboost engine," commented MG's Head of Powertrain, Paul McNamara. "Ford has got the technology to market first and changed perceptions. Our goal is to be competitive with their figures and attain the best real-world results possible," McNamara added. The larger 1.4-litre and 1.5-litre turbocharged engines will be available in the MG3, MG5, MG6 and a production version of the CS Concept (above) displayed at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show. In addition to new power plants, MG is also working on two dual-clutch transmissions, namely a wet version that can handle 359Nm of torque and a dry version that can take up to 223Nm of torque. The wet dual-clutch transmission will go on sale in China this year while the dry one will likely go into production in 2015. The MG Car Company Limited was a former British sports car manufacturer founded in the 1920s. On 22nd July 2005, the Nanjing Automobile Group purchased the rights to the MG brand and the assets of the MG Rover Group, creating a new company called MG Motor.
  3. Supercar maker McLaren has released the details of the production version of the P1 prior to its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. Only 375 units will be produced instead of the originally planned 500 copies to maintain the car's exclusivity. The P1 is motivated by a hybrid powertrain consisting of a twin-turbo, 3.8-litre V8 generating 737bhp with 720Nm of torque and an electric motor producing 179bhp and 260Nm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels. The P1 has a carbon fibre chassis which weighs 100kg, which is the lightest ever installed on a road-going car. According to McLaren, it is capable of providing the safety and rigidity of an F1 vehicle. The slippery P1 has a CD figure of 0.34 and can generate 600kg of downforce, which is five times more than the MP4-12C. The super car is fitted with an Instant Power Assist System (IPAS). According to McLaren, the IPAS is the electric motor which can be activated via a steering wheel-mounted button that gives the P1 the throttle response of a normally-aspirated engine. With the IPAS on, the P1 reaches 100km/h from standstill under 3 seconds and achieves 200 km/h within 7 seconds.
  4. Recently, British magazine Auto Express pit the Audi R8 against the new Porsche 911 on a race track. These two supercars are actually distant relatives considering that both brands are under the Volkswagen Group's umbrella. The Audi R8 received a facelift in 2012 with the addition of a seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch transmission that replaces the six-speed automated manual R-tronic. At the other corner, the all new Porsche 911 has a rich heritage that dates back to 1963 and has been acclaimed as one of the world's benchmark sports cars. The Porsche 911 Carrera 4S is propelled by a flat-six, 3.8-litre engine with an output of 394bhp. In the 4S, power is distributed to all four wheels via a PDK dual clutch transmission. On the other hand, the R8 in this comparison test is motivated by a free-breathing 4.2-litre V8 with 424bhp. Like the 911, the R8 has an all-wheel drive setup. Whoever wins this group test, Volkswagen wins.
  5. Alfa Romeo has raised consumer's expectations for its upcoming 4C coupe. In the latest teaser for the mid-engined car, it states "BEHOLD, THE CAR TO END ALL CARS IS NIGH". The new model is previewed by the 4C Concept that was presented at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The production version will derive its styling cues from the 4C concept and will likely be propelled by the 1750 TBi engine currently found in the Giulietta QV. The turbocharged lump produces 232bhp with 340Nm of torque. This is enough to send the Giulietta QV from zero to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds. In the sleeker and lighter 4C, the century sprint timing is expected to be much better. Power will be sent to the rear wheels via a dual-clutch transmission. The new 4C will be making its debut at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show. Often referred to as the successor to the 8C Competizione, let's hope that the new model can walk the talk. Note: The photos shown in this blog are the 4C concept
  6. Just a few months back, Mercedes Benz announced that they will release an AMG version of the A-Class. Known as the A 45 AMG, the car is said to rival other performance models such as the RS3 and the M135i and the car will get a rather powerful engine. The A45 AMG will be fitted with the M133 engine which is a turbocharged 2.0-litre, four cylinder unit. It makes around 350bhp and 400Nm of torque. The engine is fitted with a single Borg Warner twin scroll turbocharger which redlines at 6,300rpm. That sounds pretty impressive and it would be great if Mercedes Benz offers the same engine in other models. And that is exactly what the German auto giant is going to do. The M133 engine will be used on a new, upcoming model which is called the CLA-Class. The CLA-Class is said to be heavily based on a recent concept known as the Style Coupe Concept (top most image). The CLA-Class will be based on a front wheel drive or an all wheel drive platform and it is sized just below the C-Class. The transmission that will be used on the A 45 AMG is a new seven speed dual clutch gearbox and it is possible that it will be used on the CLA-Class. Obviously, the M133 engine will only be fitted to the highest grade of the CLA-Class. The base model will likely get a turbocharged four cylinder unit that makes around 210bhp. The A 45 AMG is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year and the CLA will be introduced shortly after that. Mercedes Benz intends to offer both models for sale within a few moths after their debut.
  7. When it comes to automatic transmissions, four speed auto transmissions are fast getting replaced with more advanced auto transmissions. More automakers are introducing six, seven and even eight speed automatic transmission into their vehicles nowadays. These introductions are made mainly for fuel efficiency reasons, to get more kilometres out of their fuel consumption usage. But, there are also some automakers such as Nissan, who are moving towards the usage of continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). But that is not the case for Hyundai as the Korean automaker has preferred dual clutch transmissions over continuously variable transmissions. Mike O
  8. [extract] At the recent Paris Motor Show, Honda CEO, Takanobu Ito, confirmed that the Civic Type R would go on sale in 2015 but did not give out any further details. Although there are about two more years before the arrival of the 2015 Civic Type R (CTR), rumors are starting to emerge with regards to the boy racer
  9. Move over, Polo GTI, here comes the 2013 Renault Clio RS 200. As the name suggest, this is the performance version of the French mini hatchback. Unlike its naturally-aspirated predecessor, the new model is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine mated to a six-speed dual clutch transmission. Despite losing 400cc, the new RS produces the same power at 197bhp. What is more impressive is that turbocharged lump generates 26Nm more torque and achieves its peak torque at a much lower 1750rpm (vs 5400rpm in the old model). The pocket rocket allows the driver to select between normal and sport mode via an 'RS' button. In addition, a 'Race mode' for the transmission can be chosen and gear change would only take a mere 150 milliseconds. The car will also be offered with an optional Launch Control system. Although the century sprint timing of the new RS is not released, it is speculated to be below 6.5 seconds in 'Race mode'. The exterior styling details warn the rest of the road users not to mess with this little mean machine. The blackened side mirrors, LED DRLs, redesigned bumpers, red brake calipers, 17" black alloys differentiate the RS variant from its lesser brethren. On the inside, the RS gets red trimmings all over and sports bucket seats to keep your butt in place during hard cornering. Other standard features include touchscreen navigation, Bluetooth and USB connectivity as well as Renault

  12. The seven-speed dual clutch transmission system in the Bugatti Veyron is one tough component. And it comes to no surprise when Ricardo (the company that built the transmission used in the Veyron) has recently announced that they have extended their contract with Bugatti for another two years as it could be the only dual clutch transmission capable of handling huge power. In fact, it was Bugatti who placed an order for a further two years of production of the advanced dual clutch transmission which was co-developed between them and Ricardo. The joint effort of designing, developing and manufacturing of the transmission system surrounds the transmission hardware, electronic control unit and its software. This research and design effort enables the transmission to withstand huge amount of power that we already know the Bugatti Veyron is capable of. The transmission is used in the Veyron and all of its sub-models. According to a Ricardo employee, they are pleased to see a further extension of the collaboration between them and Bugatti. And they look forward to two further very successful years in the story of this truly great automobile with its advanced Ricardo transmission The Bugatti Veyron is the only model offered by the automaker currently and it was available since 2005. For the last seven years, the company has remained in existence with the Veyron alone but many felt that the car is approaching towards the end of its model life span. Typically, when an automaker is phasing out a certain model, the company will tease us with a picture or two of how the next model will look like. But Bugatti is no typical car manufacturer and there is no news of a replacement model. So where or on what will Bugatti use these transmissions? There are several rumoured possibilities. Firstly, Bugatti might use them in an all new Veyron sub-model and at the same time extend the model

  14. Dual-clutch transmissions have become increasingly popular in small cars and have even appeared in high-performance machines like the Porsche 911 and Bugatti Veyron. Now, Mitsubishi Fuso has become the first commercial truck maker to offer one of these fancy gearboxes in a hauler. The new six-speed M038S6 "Duonic transmission" features wet clutches and incorporates the ability to creep in traffic for smoother operation. Although Duonic-equipped trucks will probably be driven mostly in fully-automatic mode, the transmission can also be manually shifted. Mitsubishi Fuso is 85-percent owned by Daimler, with the remainder being held by Mitsubishi. Examples of some of the commercial vehicles produced by Fuso are shown below.
