He typed in his name - and was shocked to see his particulars and address listed. The full addresses of others living in his block were also listed. Mr Chua said he had not given any consent to SPH Search, which runs the Red Nano website, to list his personal details in the public domain. "Imagine, anybody can search the whole block. It would be very useful for marketing people, even loansharks would be interested to know. Anybody can send mail to me or come to my house. They could ask, 'Is Mr Chua in?' Then you would think that is a friend or relative - so anybody would open the door," said a concerned Mr Chua. When contacted by Channel NewsAsia, SPH Search said its data sources are proprietary to the company and it is not at liberty to disclose information on it. It added: "Red Nano People Search is an online white pages directory service that allows users to access and find basic contact information of people living in Singapore. "Our easy-to-use service lets users post and update their contact details on the Internet, upload photos as well as share links to their favourite social networking sites, making their online presence more current and personalised at no charge." However, following feedback from Mr Chua, Red Nano has since taken his particulars off the website. Data protection code is voluntary, but ... Responding to Channel NewsAsia's queries, the Ministry for Communications, Information and The Arts (Mica) said there is a Model Data Protection Code in Singapore. But this is for voluntary adoption by the private sector. Mica added: "The Model Code provides broad guidelines and principles on the proper management of personal information and it has been adopted by many companies, including those engaged in e-commerce under the TrustSG initiative."
