Of late, my last few checks on my engine oil dipstick showed that my engine oil level has increased. This was first discovered about a month ago. There are 2 tips on the dipstick. I noticed that since last month, the oil level has exceeded the upper tip of the dipstick. First check was in the morning when the engine was cold for more than 8 hours since the car was parked the night before. Did 2 further checks over the course of last few weeks. Level was above the upper tip. The increase was not slightly or too much during those cold or room temperature. There was also no oil leakage found. However, when the car was driven and parked for a few hours, the oil level exceeded the upper tip by a bigger length (of course engine was still slightly hot and this is understandable). Not sure whether this should be cause for concern. I know that if oil level drops, we need to take note or go workshop to top up by the same grade and brand engine oil. But for my case, it increases..... I am using OWS NA engine oil. No grade was stated. First time trying this oil. Been using it for more than 8,500km mileage. My car's mileage is more than 86,000 km. Hope to have some views from knowledgeable bros in this forum. Thanks!

I think there must be a engine internal oil leakage causing oil from somewhere? in the upper parts of the engine to very slowly leak down into the sump. But what could that be ? ? ? It's an Astra-G with a Isuzu 1.7 diesel, fairly standard/simple engine I think. It does have a turbo, and a EGR valve. There's no other faults or symptoms. The Haynes? book says I should measure the oil level 10 minutes after halting, so that's what I've done, and it's half a liter above min (or half a liter below max if you like) 10 minutes after halting. But if I then come back a couple of hours later, it's aprox half a liter above max ! ? ? I'm fairly sure it was not like that before, and this is my second Astra with this engine. Before this I had oil and filter change of course. Could it be one of the oil filter gaskets ? Or a not quite compatible filter ?. Also before this, I had a too high oil level so I sucked out a little bit using a break fluid vacum pump/hose through the dip-stick (simple and easy). And at the same time before this I had an EGR-error indication, so I had the EGR out (for the second time), cleaned it, tested it, and put it back in. If that was because of too much oil or just ordinary usage I don't know. It's quite a bit of work and I had to do it a couple of years before as well, so I'm generally taking care not to have too much oil on the engine. But I don't measure the volume I pour into it. I just fill it up and check the dip-stick. ... So maybe that's how I got too much. So now, I'm using the car with maybe half a liter too much, but if I check it 10 minutes after halting, it's just perfect. There's no other faults ! ...... Power and performance is o.k. / as normal, and coolant level is steady an nice,... there's no other symptoms that I know of. The level is always the same (except as mentioned). These Y17DT engines (of which this is my second) both had oil leakage from the cam shaft sealing (and possibly some of the other seals as well), causing the register belt to be soaked in oil (but still running though), so for both I had to change the seals, and thereafter I generally didn't have any problems with the engine. Except for the Astra-G version which had a seal in the generator as well (between the vacum pump and the generator) that was of course leaking as well, and this #¤%" EGR on the Astra-G, and the ECM needing replacement on the Astra-G,... but the engine itself is, apart from this, generally quite nice. By the way, also now (and not before),... there is oil long up the dip stick after taking it out, and I have to clean it lower it and pull it up again. I don't think it was like that before. ?. ............

Guys, I need some advise. I have a 15yr old Caterpillar V8 diesel engine attached to drive a sea water pump unit. Operating at 1500 rpm only. Last week, found that engine oil surged out through dip stick after 20 mins run and EO temp also increased to 110 deg from the normal 85-90deg C. I have ordered a replacement dipstick as the plastic wedge with O ring at the dip stick was missing. Could this be the reason for EO to leak out?

The practice of opening the hood at every fuel stop used to be routine. With an oil-soaked rag in hand, the worker reached over and pulled out the hot metal dipstick, and after a quick cleaning swipe, the dipstick was plunged back into its tube and pushed down into the sump of scalding oil. Withdrawn again, a tell-tale black film in the middle of the scored lines marked the oil level very accurately. Today, many late model vehicles are running sans oil dipstick. Electronic oil level senders have replaced the metal rod

I had nagging question that I had to ask. Do you guys take your dipstick reading with your engine off or on ? Reason was this: I had always take the reading with the engine off. That's after resting the engine for about 5-10 minutes. However recently, I decided to see what the reading was like with engine running. With engine off, the reading is somewhere in the middle btw the min & max mark. However, with engine running, the reading is way below the min mark ! So if you top up based on engine running readings, it would probably be way above the max. mark if engine is off, which may damage the cat. converter. So which is the correct method ? With engine ON or OFF ?

Hi, My dipstick (on my car, my other dipstick is fine) broke off. The finger grip portion broke off when I was checking the oil level and colour. Rest of dipstick is ok but I want to change it soon. Strange for this to happen. I have never owned a car or have heard of anyone experiencing this before. Wondering where should I get this replaced, CA or outside like Xin Zhong? Lamy
