Many people will remember his role in the Hunger Games as President Snow. Donald Sutherland, Don’t Look Now and Hunger Games actor, dies aged 88 Donald Sutherland, whose acting career spanned six decades and included starring in such highly acclaimed films as Don’t Look Now, M*A*S*H and The Hunger Games, has died aged 88. He died in Miami after a long illness, confirmed by his representatives. His son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, also shared the news on X. “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” he wrote. “I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.” A prolific actor who appeared in more than 190 films and TV shows, Sutherland embodied an off-kilter appeal that served him brilliantly in a series of classic 1970s movies, which gradually evolved into a veteran gravitas in the latter stages of his career. He did not win a major award for any of his film roles (and was never nominated for a conventional Oscar), but did win two Golden Globes for best supporting actor for the TV movies Citizen X (in 1996) and Path to War (in 2003). Sutherland received an honorary Oscar in 2017. https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/jun/20/actor-donald-sutherland-dies-hunger-games-dont-look-now

NOTE: Some images may be disturbing. So see at your own risk As rare as it is, it would be good to share with those that may encounter and perhaps enlighten those who may have it. Started with an abrasion and developed redness Did not go away and developed into an Eschar and swelling over the next few days: Eschar got worse and I then suspected localised cellulitis and sought tx from polyclinic and was given antibiotics. Got worse and did not subside, and then went to hospital and the wound was then getting bigger: That was when they did a biopsy and found it to be Calciphylaxis. An almost untreatable condition with 40-80% mortality and most succumb to secondary sepsis. The PAIN, was amost neuropathic...and one that you would never want to have. As there was nothing to be done, got discharged. That was when the worse started to happen: NExt sequence of images showed the extent of the growth of the wound: This was when I took things into my own hands and changed strategy of dressing with hydrocolloids to remove the eschar . Progress shown in the subsequent images: After a month, breakthrough and the end is shown: Fully closed: Conclusion and lessons learnt: 1. Identify the signs early. Cellulitis and calciphylaxis are often mixed up and is very common . 2. At all costs, keep the wound dry! 3. Seek assistance early. In my case , derma took too long so I had to manage the wound myself. Gd thing I’m knowledgeable in the area of wound mgt. 4. Be positive. The pain can almost make one go into depression so that needs serious managing. Water under the bridge for this now but this episode is documented for the sheer notion of its rarity and to those that may encounter or face this, hope this helps. I remain positive that I am in remission for this now until it surfaces again? Then we see......

PETALING JAYA - A mourning father from the state of Negeri Sembilan was shocked to find out that his son, whom authorities said had died in prison last week, is still alive. The father, who only wanted to be identified as Mr Chantren, told Malay daily Sinar Harian that the family’s ordeal started when he received a call from the prison authorities on March 3 saying his son, whom he did not named, had died in Sungai Buloh Prison. He said he did not know why his son, 19, was in prison. As far as he knows, his son was living and working in the town of Selayang in Selangor. Mr Chantren was told to claim his son’s remains at the Sungai Buloh Hospital which he did together with several other family members. “When we looked (at the remains), we noticed that the face was different after post-mortem because there were suture marks and his hair had also been shaved,” he told reporters when met at his house. Upon claiming the body from the hospital, a sad Mr Chantren and his family prepared for funeral rites and made arrangements to cremate their son’s remains. However, to the family’s surprise, they were informed just a few hours before the cremation that the youth was still alive. “We received a call from the prison authority about three or four hours before the cremation time - and they informed us that my son was still alive. “They did a video call (to show). I do not know how to even express my feelings. Our son is still alive, but whose body is at our house now?” the perplexed man said. According to Mr Chantren, officials from the prison had since gone to his house and collected the body. Mr Chantren has also requested to meet his son in prison. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/world/pope-benedict-xvi-dies-aged-95-3176651?cid=FBcna VATICAN CITY: Former Pope Benedict died on Saturday (Dec 31) in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican, a spokesman for the Holy See said. He was 95. "With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9.34am in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible," the spokesman said in a written statement. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/08/30/mikhail-gorbachev-soviet-union-cold-war-obit-035311 Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet Union’s final leader, dies He oversaw the end to the Soviet empire, a divided Europe and the Cold War. Mikhail Gorbachev, who enabled the Cold War to come to a peaceful end during his astonishing tenure as the leader of the Soviet Union, has died. He was 91. Coming to power after a dispiriting succession of elderly, hardline Soviet leaders, Gorbachev brought a fresh approach to both internal and international politics. He shook up a nation that had never fulfilled most of its promises to its people and created a seismic shift in international relations, altering a world that been locked in a nuclear stare-down for four decades. He introduced “glasnost” (openness) and “perestroika” (restructuring) into the Soviet Union, rocking a stagnant and fearful society to its core. Then, he made it clear that the Soviets would not keep the nations of Eastern Europe under their grip, setting off a chain of events that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and of communist regimes through the region. Finally, much more awkwardly, he oversaw the dissolution of the Soviet Union itself, as it split into 15 nations. “We are now living in a new world,” he said as he stepped down in December 1991. “An end has been put to the Cold War and to the arms race, as well as to the mad militarization of the country, which has crippled our economy, public attitudes, and morals. The threat of nuclear war has been removed.”

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/kidney-patient-dies-ttsh-catheter-insertion-procedure-dialysis-13055912 I wonder how do you find good doctors other than through word of mouth... There is no central databases that track outcomes of surgery performed in Singapore by various doctors. I think patients should be followed up by an independent body and outcomes measured and stored for people to review. Do the public health service do that for doctors performance review? I wonder how do doctors in public hospitals get reviewed every year.

https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/australianz/father-and-son-in-australia-drown-saving-tourist-near-popular-spot-the-twelve Father and son in Australia drown saving tourist near popular spot Twelve Apostles MELBOURNE (AFP) - A father and son life-saving team drowned while trying to save a tourist swept out to sea near one of Australia's most famous sights off the south coast, officials said on Monday (April 22). Mr Ross Powell, 71, and his son Andrew, 32, died on Sunday after their life-saving boat overturned in the surf during the rescue of a 30-year-old man near the Twelve Apostles, a series of massive limestone stacks situated off the Victoria state coast. The tourist, whose nationality and name have not been released, had been wading at the mouth of a river when he got into trouble. He was winched from the water alongside a third lifesaver from the boat, who was seriously injured, by a rescue helicopter and taken to hospital, Victoria Police said. The bodies of the Powells were found in the water shortly after. The tragedy has rocked the small tourist town of Port Campbell where the two men came from, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison leading the tributes. "Surf lifesavers are selfless & brave. We thank them all for their service & extend our deepest sympathies to Ross & Andrew's family & friends," Mr Morrison tweeted on Monday. Surf Lifesaving Victoria president Paul James hailed the pair as heroes, and said the conditions had been rough and "not the place to be swimming". "It's just terrible, it's heartbreaking," he told reporters in an emotional press conference of the death of the dairy farmers and experienced volunteer lifesavers. "I understand the boat was operating in a 2m swell, so a very high swell, and we know that it is very treacherous down there... These brave people, these heroes, have gone out to try and help." Ms Amber Griffiths, the partner of Andrew and who local media reported was pregnant with their second child, wrote about her heartbreak on Facebook. "Today we lost two of the most beautiful people to ever exist - always putting others first," she wrote. "The love of my life, light of my life, father of my baby girl. My heart is broken. I miss you Andrew Powell."

Another sad news of a performer died while performing. Accident can happen no matter how one is experienced in the field of specialisation. Rest in peace. May the peace be with the family of the performer. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ An experienced Cirque du Soleil performer has died after plunging onto a stage during an aerial straps routine at a weekend show in Tampa, Florida, the company said on Sunday. The incident occurred on Saturday night when Yann Arnaud, 38, fell during a performance of the show VOLTA, according to Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group. The French performance artist died of his injuries at a nearby hospital. Arnaud had been performing in Cirque shows for 15 years and was considered one of the company's most experienced entertainers, president and CEO Daniel Lamarre said in a telephone interview. "We were very surprised, considering his experience, that something like that happened," said Lamarre, speaking from Tampa, where he had flown to be with the show's cast. "I cannot describe to you how the people feel. It's terrible." The death is the third fatality involving a Cirque performer in the company's 34 years, said Lamarre, adding that the aerial strap act is seen as a relatively safe number. "It was awful. You heard all the cries of the audience. There were children there and they were freaking out," spectator Julian Martinez, who witnessed the accident, told local TV station WFLA. Cirque Du Soleil Performer Falls To His Death During Performance Lamarre said he could not share further details about the incident involving Arnaud, a husband and father of two young children. "We are offering our full and transparent collaboration to the authorities as they look into the circumstances of this accident," the company said in a statement, adding the last two shows of Volta planned for Tampa on Sunday have been cancelled. Local media reports said Arnaud appeared to lose his grip on a strap and fell, bringing the show to an immediate halt. Tampa police said the incident is under investigation by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. on TwitterView image on Twitter http://www.asiaone.com/world/cirque-du-soleil-star-plunges-death-during-florida-show?xtor=EREC-16-4[Emarsys_Newsletter]-20180319&extid=6934d0cfb7b252f1ae9f0dbddf5ff88ca8637e77

Wanted to start a thread for Singaporeans who pass away from accidental deaths (car accidents) or otherwise. I think previously they are all scattered in different threads and sometimes in a bit irrelevant type of grouping. Mods can decide whether this is relevant. Thanks. Amongst the saddest stories encountered this year. An orphaned mother who left her infant an orphan... What they call, fated. Haiz... Chemist who died in Jurong fire a 'bubbly, lovely girl' who lost her mum at a young age Ms Lim Siaw Chian, 30, died in a fire that broke out at gas manufacturing firm Leeden national Oxygen on Oct 12, 2015. Aw Cheng Wei SINGAPORE - The woman who died in the Jurong fire on Monday (Oct 12) had grown up without a mother. Now, her infant daughter will grow up without her mother, too. Chemist Lim Siaw Chian, 30, died in a fire that broke out at Leeden National Oxygen, a gas manufacturing firm. Of the seven others who were injured, three remain hospitalised, the Manpower Ministry said in an update. The remaining four were discharged on Tuesday. The ministry also said investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. It has also issued a stop-work order for the production and bottling of hydrocarbons, and the buying and selling of bottled gases stored in the area adjacent to the lab where the fire broke out. Ms Lim, a Malaysian who became a Singapore citizen only a month ago, had returned to work after her maternity leave one week before the fire. She was married for about two years, said her family members, who were at the mortuary next to the Singapore General Hospital on Tuesday morning. She leaves behind her husband and six-month-old daughter. Ms Lim had lost her own mother to kidney failure 22 years ago. Her mother was also 30 years old when she died, her family said. Related Story Fire at Jurong gas firm kills woman, injures 7 Related Story Response team helps control Jurong fire Her granduncle, Mr Gay Thiam Huat, who lives in Singapore, told reporters in Mandarin that he remembered her as a "bubbly, lovely girl" who often visited his home when she first came to Singapore with her mother at a young age. The last time he and the rest of the family saw her was about two years ago, at her wedding. Said Mr Gay, 64, a lorry driver: "She was not sure if she wanted the Singapore citizenship initially... She thought the cost of living here was quite high. He added that she could have changed her mind as Singapore holds a special meaning to her. She had studied and worked in Singapore since a young age. "She met her husband, who is also from Malaysia, in university here," Mr Gay said. Ms Lim's husband, who is now a Singapore citizen, was also at the mortuary on Tuesday morning, along with his parents. He was distraught and did not speak to the media. Ms Lim, who lived with her husband in Jurong West, had been working at Leeden National Oxygen for more than a year. Previously, she did food testing at another company. Her remains will be sent back to her hometown of Senai in Johor on Tuesday evening, said Mr Gay. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday.

Many of us from the 70's will remember this man ........... I started smoking after seeing you but quit much earlier than you ... R.I.P. yahoo news: Ex-Marlboro man dies from smoking-related disease LOS ANGELES (AP) — When it came to portraying the rugged western outdoorsman who helped transform a pack of filtered cigarettes into the world's most popular brand, Marlboro Man Eric Lawson was the real deal. Ruggedly handsome, the actor could ride a horse through the wide-open spaces of the Southwest, from Texas to Colorado to Arizona or wherever else the Phillip Morris tobacco company sent him to light up while representing a true American icon, the cowboy. And he really did smoke Marlboro cigarettes, as many as three packs a day. Lawson was still smoking in 2006 when he was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He died of the disease at his home in San Luis Obispo on Jan. 10. He was 72. For three years in the late 1970s and early '80s, Lawson portrayed one of the most iconic figures in both advertising and popular culture. And for the past several years, Lawson had spoken out fiercely about the hazards of smoking, doing a public service announcement for the American Cancer Society in the 1990s, years before he was able to bring himself to quit. "He tried to speak to the kids, telling them don't start smoking," his wife, Susan Lawson, told The Associated Press. "He already knew cigarettes had a hold on him." more on his news, link: http://sg.entertainment.yahoo.com/news/ex-marlboro-man-dies-smoking-related-disease-034350253.html
