  1. https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2019/04/25/details-revealed-by-former-editor-of-the-new-paper-of-how-the-press-was-manipulated-by-pap-in-1997-to-fix-workers-party-politicians/ Bertha Henson former Associate Editor of The Straits Times wrote on her blog, Bertha Harian, about the upcoming book written by former editor of The New Paper, Mr P N Balji called The Reluctant Editor. The book promises stories from Mr Balji’s times as editor in both Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Mediacorp – described by Ms Henson as ‘nuggets of information that had been kept from the public eye’. The Reluctant Editor, says Ms Henson, contains stories about the relationship between the Government and local media which were generally not openly talked about, stories that she thought ‘journalists would take to their graves’. The fact that he, and others like him in the past, chose to share these stories is a mark of courage, she said. One story in particular that Mr Balji expands on in his book which Ms Henson was part of is the incident of the 1997 General Elections when The New Paper ran a story on their front page about the police reports filed against People’s Action party ministers by Workers’ Party politicians Tang Liang Hong and JB Jeyaretman. ADVERTISEMENT What happened in 1997? Before we can go further, we need to know what happened in 1997. The General Election that year was notable for the incident involving Tang Liang Hong who now live in exile. At the time, Mr Tang stood for elections alongside the late JB Jeyaretnam in Cheng San GRC. Mr Tang was attacked constantly by the PAP for being an anti-Christian Chinese chauvanist. The day before polling day, WP held a rally during which Mr Jeyaretnam had said that police reports had been filed against 11 members of the PAP. He said, ““Mr Tang Liang Hong has just placed before me two reports he has made to the police against, you know, Mr Goh Chok Tong and his team”. However, he did not go into further detail. People were guessing over the content of the report but there was no way for journalist to get their hands on it unless Mr Jeyaretnam handed it over to them directly. The police, after all, do not release report details on request. Ms Henson went on to describe how the next day, Mr Balji received a home call suggesting that he could get the police reports. He need only ask. Ms Henson highlighted, “This was a strange offer of a scoop offered to TNP, a newspaper which at that time was sold at lunch-time.” She continued, “Balji admits that the idea of a scoop stirred journalistic passions. Which editor would not welcome the chance to get one step ahead of its rivals, especially the broadsheet Straits Times, which had already gone to print by then?” As the deputy at the time, Ms Henson got in touch with the police to get the report but was denied. Mr Balji then made a phone call and a little later, the reports were faxed to them. TNP published the reports on their front page that day. The aftermath Ms Henson says that while she and Mr Balji did not get in trouble for publishing the police reports, Mr Tang and Mr Jeyaretnam did. While WP earned a non-constituentcy MP seat which Mr Jeyaretnam took, he was also slapped with 11 suits. Ms Henson said, “That was when it began to dawn on us that we had been made use of to disseminate a supposed libel to an even wider audience, which could mean higher damages if the PAP side won.” What followed was a massive legal battle waged against Mr Tang and Mr Jeyaretnam by the PAP leaders of the Singapore government for alleged defamation. Ms Henson recalled at the time that Mr Balji ‘wondered if he would be called to the stand by the defence to declare how he had obtained the reports’ but he was never summoned. “Nobody talked about the content of the reports; just its announcement,” she wrote. The courts found Mr Jeyaretnam liable and ordered him to pay $20,000 in damages. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at the time described that sentence as “derisory”. The PAP then appealed and the damages were raised to S$100,000 plus $20,000 in costs. As Ms Henson says, Mr Tan had fled the country and Mr Jeyaretnam was ‘taken to the cleaners’. In 2001 he was declared bankrupt after failing to meet his instalment payments. Consequently, he lost his NCMP seat as undischarged bankrupts are barred from serving in Parliament. He couldn’t stand for the 2001 general elections and in October of that year, he resigned as Secretary General of the WP. Regret over the decision to publish Over 20 years later, Ms Henson says the events still ‘grated’ on her. She said, “Playing it back, I wondered if we could have said no. Our journalistic instincts, scoop mentality and deadline pressure overwhelmed our ethics. We wanted to be first with the story. But we found that the fleeting euphoria was nothing compared to the stone that had been lodged in our hearts since. We did a terrible thing.” In the Particulars of the Statement of Claim served on 21 July 1997, the late Lee Kuan Yew conceded for the first time that he and ESM Goh Chok Tong who was then Prime Minister had procured the release of the police reports. The ESM Goh made a similar admission in an affidavit he swore in August 1997. This was also pointed out by Mr Tang in an interview he had given to freelance writer Chris Lydgate (originally commissioned by Asia Online but never publish) which was eventually posted on the Singapore Election blog in 2006. Similarly, the Singapore-Window website recounted Mr Tang’s lawyer George Carmen’s statement to the High Court which pointed out the ‘fundamental error in the case’. He noted that while under oath, PM Goh has admitted in Court that he has authorised Mr Lee Kuan Yew to release Mr Tang’s police reports. “Mr Carman said the prime minister and Mr Lee, his predecessor, “shot themselves in the foot” by releasing the report over which they are now seeking legal damages,” said the site. The press is a tool for politicans As it was already established way back then that it was Mr Goh who had authorised the release of the reports to the press. This, coupled with Mr Balji’s recounting of the events in his book and Ms Henson’s sharing on her blog, adds further evidence to the Mr Tang’s claim that he was set up with a cleverly orchestrated plan. If anything, this reinforces the fact that the press has always been a powerful tool not just for critics of the administration but for the administration itself. So it’s not a stretch at all to consider that politicians would want to be able to harness this tool and utilise it for themselves while preventing others from using it. You can see where this is going, I’m sure. The heavily debated Clause 61 in the proposed Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) states: So apart from the sweeping powers that would be granted under the act to any minister to declare falsehoods, ministers are also able to exempt individuals and groups from the act. This is a power that would be easily abused as a means to avoid holding the government accountable for potentially spreading falsehoods. For example, in the case above of the government claimed in Court that the announcement made by Mr Jeyaretnam at the WP rally was the problem when actually it was the administration that released that information to the press in the first place, making way for a libel suit. As it stands, there is a high potential of the law being misused by a minister seeking to advance an agenda. As Associate Professor of Law at Singapore Management University and former NMP, Eugene Tan said in an article by the South China Morning Press, “Any law can be misused for rogue purposes. Ultimately, a price will be paid by the government of the day if the law is misused to clamp down on dissent. How it is applied will also be subjected to the court of public opinion. Hence, governmental action must not only be in conformity with the law, but also endowed with legitimacy. ×××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××××× When fake news and doxxing law is the talk of the town.. It's worth remembering that things Are complicated. 1997 seems to be year that never stops giving.
  2. 301 mph, 1,600 hp: Hennessey Venom F5 details emerge https://www.autoblog.com/2017/11/01/301-mph-1-600-hp-hennessey-venom-f5-details-emerge/ Hennessy Special Vehicles is unveiling its much-awaited Venom F5 hypercar today at the SEMA Show (along with a cool new video that fans of early Aerosmith will dig, below), and the beast dubbed "America's Hypercar" is making big promises. Hennesseyteased the stunner a couple weeks ago, saying its intent was to take on the Bugatti Chiron for the title of world's fastest car. Now we have more details to go on for the F5. Its twin-turbo, 7.4-liter aluminum V8 produces an astounding 1,600 horsepower and 1,300 pound-feet of torque, giving it a top speed of 301 miles per hour. Acceleration will be quick: from 0 to 186 mph in less than 10 seconds and 0 to 249 and back to rest in less than 30 seconds, though independent performance tests of course will have to bear out those claims. The engine is mated to a seven-speed single-clutch paddle-shift transmission that drives the rear wheels. Unlike the car it replaces, the Venom GT, which was built atop a Lotus Elise platform, the Venom F5 gets an all-new, lightweight chassis and carbon-fiber body, giving it a curb weight of just 2,950 pounds. "We've designed F5 to be timeless so that in 25 years it will still have a level of performance and design that will be unmatched," CEO John Hennessey said in a statement. "The F5 is an all new car, designed and built from the ground up, from the engine to the chassis. We expect the Venom F5, named for the most powerful tornado speed winds on the Fujita scale, to be the first road car capable of achieving more than 300 mph and have worked closely with Pennzoil to get us across the finish line." The Venom GT, which had a 1,451-horsepower twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8, was unofficially dubbed the world's fastest car in 2014,having hit 270.49 mph, though Bugatti plans to challenge that next year in the Chiron. Base price will be a cool $1.6 million, with just 24 units to be built. And according to "Top Gear," John Hennessey himself will hand-pick its recipients, with first deliveries starting in 2019. 3. An anonymous source has e-mailed what appears to be a digital press kit produced by Lexus for next week's Geneva Motor Show. The pages of the kit reveal photos and details of the Lexus CT 200h five-door hybrid, set for a debut at the Geneva event. The full hybrid is based on the LF-Ch concept shown at the Frankfurt show in 2009. It features a 1.8-liter four-cylinder VVT-i petrol engine and a magnet synchronous electric motor. The company has not published performance details, but they do say that the motor is "powerful." Nickel-metal hydride is used for the high voltage battery. Power is sent to the front wheels via a electrically-controlled contiuously variable transmission, or E-CVT for short. The car remains a sleek five-door, just like the concept. It has sporty overhangs at the front and back, and a well-placed rear spoiler. The car looks to have LED rear lighting. At 4,320mm long, the car is 140mm shorter than the Toyota Prius. The Lexus is 1,765mm wide by 1,430mm high; 20mm x 50mm less than the Prius. It rides on 17-inch alloy wheels, and features McPherson/front- and double wishbone rear suspension. Lexus wants to use this car to prove that full hybrids do not have to be boring drives. They claim the car has "superior handling agility" to suit their customers' wishes, and three driving modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport) to adjust to different situations. Again, Lexus remained vague about sprint times, overtake ability, and top speed. Hopefully, these details and more will be released at the Geneva Motor Show. The leaked information also reveals data about Lexus LFA sales orders which states allocation will be fixed in April, while individual orders will be confirmed to customers in May. Demand has surpassed the announced 500 units set to be produced.

  7. Even can say which cp somemore and how the process went... Taking the stand for the first time, former Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) chief Ng Boon Gay on Monday came clean on his relationship with former IT sales executive Cecilia Sue. 15 minutes into the beginning of his testimony in the afternoon, he recounted how their affair started between end-2008 and early 2009. Accused of four counts of sex-related graft, Ng said he had a three-year extra-marital relationship with Sue during which they had oral sex 20 to 30 times in various car parks and other secluded spots across Singapore. Among these locations were the Singapore General Hospital car park, a car park in Mount Faber, East Coast Park and the Halifax car park in Novena. The first encounter occurred at East Coast Park, about two to three months after they first met at around the end of 2008. Each intimate session that followed throughout the time they were together was consensual and lasted about 30 minutes, he said.
  8. Something I found off the internet; http://www.autoblog.com/2013/05/09/2014-to...d/#aol-comments Looks like their engines will be here to stay for a long time!!! Although the interior will probably look the same as the JDM model; http://toyota.jp/corollaaxio/002_p_002/int...ront/index.html Judging from the Yaris, Auris and Rav4 interior design, this is credible.

  15. Chance upon this news and I don't know if most people knew about it.....I for 1 do not know HSBC Fine Print Submitted by hallion on April 27, 2011 - 8:48pm HSBC upgraded their ATM cards in the past several months, Customers were told within a few weeks the old card will expire even know I still had months if not 1 year to left, all sounds good. What HSBC didn't tell their customers that once you use started using the new card your old conditions agreement was void and new agreement give the bank the right to sell your personal details all in small fine print ! I have looked at my old ATM card customers agreement (Small Print) and the new customers agreement side by side, HSBC has added this clause into the new customers agreement, tell you that HSBC has the right to pass on / sell your personal details for marketing etc. Since I've started using my new ATM, I get SMS / calls selling services etc by HSBC or agents. Today I was in my Local branch, 2 other people were complaining about the same think. HSBC staff were very red faced when this was brought to thier attention in black and white about the "upgrade " to the small print. Every customer need to be a where of this new clause.

  17. New details on the upcoming 2012 BMW 3-Series - codenamed the F30. The next-generation 3-Series has been expected to be larger and, according to the report, will feature an additional 2 inches of length (5.1 cm) as well as a wider track and longer wheelbase. The 3-Series will come closer in looks to the current 5-Series, adopting the softer features of that new design paradigm of BMW's. A close look at some of the spy shots we've already seen also reveals that the next 3-Series will have shorter overhangs, also allowing for more cabin space. The 3-Series will keep its current mostly forged-aluminum five-link rear suspension and aluminum-intensive double-joint struts at the front. New will be optional adaptive dampers. It may even feature the adaptive anti-roll chassis from the 5-Series. Changes are also expected under the bonnet. An entry-level 1.6 liter turbo, borrowed from MINI, will be tuned to around 150 PS (110 kW). And BMW will fit a direct-injection turbocharged 2.0 liter to the 3-Series to replace some of the output levels currently furnished by the naturally aspirated 3.0 liter 6-cylinder. A 3.0 liter turbocharged straight-six will likely still top the range, though, dialed up a little to around the 320 PS (235 kW) mark from the current 306 PS (225 kW) - as on the current 640i. BMW is expected to fit its 8-speed automatic to the next 3-Series too. For the cabin design, the instrument cluster will get a matte black background with color graphics for the displays in a new arrangement. The 2012 3-Series will share a platform with the smaller next-generation 1-Series (F20), which is expected to debut sometime in 2011. The next 3-Series is expected to be introduced next year too. 18. More details have emerged, courtesy of our colleagues over at Autocar, on the Mercedes-Benz CLS shooting brake. Taking aim directly at the upcoming Audi A7 and the BMW 5-Series GT, the CLS wagon features the same design as the CLS saloon/sedan model (previewed as the F800 Concept) up to the B-pillar, where, from then on, it will have its own unique styling. The CLS is based on the E-Class platform but comes with a longer wheelbase (by 20 mm) and a design blend part SLS (nose), part F800 Style Concept, and includes a high shoulder-line and frameless doors with short windows as in the current CLS model. But before this CLS wagon arrives on the scene, there will be a new CLS. The upcoming next-generation of the model will come with a choice of four engines, with the two gasoline/petrols featuring substantial improvements in fuel economy. The 3.5 liter V6 (CLS 350) will be good for 306 bhp / 228 kW and the 4.6 liter V8 (CLS 500) for 435 bhp / 324 kW. The two diesels are the 2.2 liter with 204 bhp / 152 kW (CLS 250 CDI) and the 3.0 liter (CLS 350 CDI) with 231 bhp / 172 kW. The CLS will also be offered as an all-wheel drive variant with certain engines. An AMG version may also be in the cards, featuring a 5.5 liter turbocharged V8 with 537 bhp / 400 kW, replacing the old naturally-aspirated 6.2 liter V8. A performance upgrade on that AMG CLS will also be available for a bump up to 563 bhp / 420 kW. The AMG CLS will come with a 7-speed MCT gearbox (multi-clutch) as seen in the E63 AMG as opposed to the standard 7-speed automatic box on offer in the regular CLS range. The new CLS is set to debut the Paris motor show later this year. A launch date for the model will likely be announced then.
  19. New information has emerged further clarifying the supposed Mercedes B-Class AMG we reported yesterday. According to Autocar it will actually be a four-door coupe based on the B-Class platform - not an AMG powered five-door compact MPV. Inspired by the F800 concept, which recently debuted at that Geneva Motor Show, the car (reportedly codenamed C117 EVO) will likely measure less than 4500mm (177 inches) in length. As a modern day successor to the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II, it will feature bold styling and a luxurious interior. Power will be provided by a supercharged 3.2-liter V6 with approximately 400 bhp (298 kW / 406 PS). Based on the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, which will be introduced on the new CLS 350, the engine will feature a smaller displacement and an electrically-operated pressure wave supercharger. Despite riding on the front-wheel drive MFA platform, which will also be used in the next generation A-Class, the four-door AMG will likely offer all-wheel drive with a rear-biased setup. While nothing is official, a possible launch is slated for 2012 or 2013.

  21. hi all, came across on on ST, pg C18 "Pioneer Annual festive sale" i went to the website and cannot find anything on it. called them up and they said it is not uploaded yet?!! ( and they dare to publish on a national paper) Then i checked what is the offer/discount as it was stated both house and in-car entertainment selections. The reply was that there are only free gifts and not discounts?!!( so why was it called a sale in the first place?) AND only house entertainment available in this "sale" !?!? So i was kind of disappointed by all these from a major player. I guess only when the actual thing is "uploaded" then we can judge further.
