What if something follows you home? Strange happenings The driver chances upon a white car (presumably a CX-5) stuck at the side of the road. But I didn’t see anything pulling the car when I reviewed the footage. Hmm. Here’s a scientific explanation The CX-5 is a front-wheel drive, and the car’s front left wheel fell into a drain, so it got stuck. While the driver tries to reverse, it gets lifted off the ground, but there’s not enough traction since only one wheel is grounded. Therefore, the car sways left and right. Does that make sense? 2022 Mazda CX-5 Revealed With Updated Design, Standard All-Wheel Drive There are more changes than meets the eye as the 2022 CX-5 benefits from a more responsive six-speed automatic transmission delivering smoother acceleration. Not only that, but the compact SUV now features a different suspension to better iron out vibrations and diminish road noise courtesy of a new dampening control structure and higher frame rigidity. Another important update is all-wheel drive being made standard across the range. As a matter of fact, Mazda is offering AWD as standard equipment on all CX models going forward. From the subcompact CX-30 to the midsize CX-9, every single SUV sold by the company will have an all-paw system even in the entry-level trim.

Although the car now look much sharper and modern than before, the changes are too subtle to qualify it as a all new generation model. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Mazda revealed the all-new CX-5 SUV complete with an updated design and a selection of new technologies. The most obvious differences between the new model and the outgoing one is the heavily updated exterior styling. Unsurprisingly, it takes much of its inspiration from the smaller CX-3 and larger CX-9 with Mazda saying that it wanted to create a vehicle that suited the phrase ‘refined toughness’. As such, the front of the new CX-5’s body is now 10 mm wider than previously and helps to give the car an improved stance on the road. Additionally, the A-pillars have been pushed back by approximately 35 mm and a new grille has been adopted. Other key design updates include thinner headlights and taillights and an overall sportier appearance, aided particularly through the re-designed roofline and sharp C-pillars. The interior of the new CX-5 has also been suitably refreshed and revised and incorporates a three-spoke steering wheel, push-button start and a 4.6-inch color display within the instrument cluster. There’s also a 7-inch display now resting on top of the dashboard, similar to most current Mercedes-Benz models. There’s also a 10-spoke Bose premium sound system and the Mazda Connect connectivity system which works in conjunction with smartphones. While engines will differ between markets, Mazda says the new CX-5 will receive its clean, 2.2-liter SkyActiv-D diesel engine and the SkyActiv-G 2.0 and SkyActiv 2.5 direct-injection petrol engines. All of these engines can be mated to either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. As standard, they are front wheel drive but the brand’s all-wheel drive system is available. Another highlight of the new model is that the strengthened chassis has resulted in a 15.5 per cent increase in torsional rigidity over the outgoing model. This is largely due to the increased use of ultra-high-tensile steel on the A-pillars and B-pillars. The improved aerodynamics of the new model also lower road noise by around 1.3 dB over rough surfaces. On a technology and safety front, the 2017 CX-5 includes Mazda Radar Cruise Control and Traffic Sign Recognition which is able to read speed limit and other road signs and display them on the 4.6-inch display. What’s more, the new model includes a torque vectoring system where torque levels can be altered based on steering wheel inputs, aiming to both improve the ride and great handling abilities.

The compact SUV segment is the probably the most competitive segment in the market today, with superb new entries such as the new CR-V (my personal favourite), new Tiguan, new CX-5, highly acclaimed Sportage, Tucson, facelifted X-Trail, Forester etc. And pricing in Singapore spans from SGD110k-ish for base versions of Forester/Tucson to almost SGD200k for the Tiguan R-line. Putting aside the question of which is best, I wondered which is best value. Because of differing AD margins, OMV games, and pricing dynamics due to strong brand loyalties, the car pricing in Singapore can be quite out of line with the rest of the world. I wanted to figure out, for instance, how fair is the SGD160k being asked for the new CR-V, Tiguan etc? Have set out the summary table in the spreadsheet link below, and the methodology below that. There are many possible methodologies, but this is a quick and dirty one that appears to provide reasonably defensible conclusions. Essentially, the quick and dirty conclusions appear to be:- 1. Median SUV is Nissan X-Trail, which is priced about at the average price of the segment for both Singapore and Australia 2. Best value compact SUVs in SIngapore are - Forester XT: Priced 8% above average in Australia and 9% below average in Singapore - Sportage 2.0 GT: Priced 7% above average in Australia and 10% below average in Singapore 3. For the new SUVs: - CR-V: the 7 seater CR-V is considerably better value that the 5-seater. - Tiguan 1.4: Not great value if priced at SGD160k. In Australia, this is priced below the equivalent X-Trail. - CX-5: Best value for a new SUV. It was an interesting experiment for me, so thought I'd share the conclusions above. Am not saying this is the definitive guide, but its a useful perspective. Australia pricing was used as the comp set because:- - Both RHD countries - Both countries import all the cars being compared, so no local content taxation distortions - All cars compared are non-luxury models, so no luxury tax considerations in Australia - All are Cat B cars, so no COE distortions in Singapore 2. Used mid to high spec cars for comps - Pricing range is between AUD35 to 42k - No point comparing poverty spec versions because the versions sold in Singapore are all mid to high spec 3. Compared cars using identical / similar spec levels in both countries - Had to make some manual adjustments for engine/features set differential in Australia for some cars 4. Used recommended retail price in Australia, and listed in Singapore - For Forester XT, last known pricing was about SGD127k, but other cars are mostly listed price - Can amend spreadsheet if anyone can provide updated numbers
