Mirai which is 'future' in Japanese is Toyota's production fuel cell vehicle. It will arrive for the summer of 2015 in European and American markets while Japan receive the first cars at end of this year. Japanese premier test-drive a Mirai last month and give the thumb up. Watch a video.

Japanese auto giant Toyota will start selling its first fuel cell sedan this financial year, with a price tag of around 7 million yen (US$70,000), the company announced on Wednesday. The vehicles will begin rolling out by March in the home market, it said, and during the summer of 2015 it will make the environmentally friendly cars available in the United States and Europe. "Hydrogen is a particularly promising alternative fuel since it can be produced using a wide variety of primary energy sources, including solar and wind power," the automaker said in a statement. Fuel cell cars are seen as the Holy Grail of green cars as they are powered by a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, which produces nothing more harmful than water. Toyota's fuel cell sedan can travel about 700 kilometres (435 miles) without refuelling, about three times further than an electric car, and it only takes three minutes refuel, similar to a gasoline engine car, Toyota said. The company, while not abandoning electric altogether, sees the fuel cell as the next logical step after its big early success with the Prius gas-electric hybrid, which has sold about 3.7 million units since its launch in the late 1990s. "Hydrogen does not emit CO2, so it could be a key player to realise a low-carbon society. It can be produced with fossil fuel such as natural gas and even with sludge accumulated in the sewage system," said Toyota vice president Mitsuhisa Kato. "We believe hydrogen could become a very important source of energy in the future." This is the first time Toyota has given a specific timeframe for its fuel cell cars, which it had previously said would go on the market in 2015. The announcement came a day after Japan's industry ministry said the government will strongly support the hydrogen and fuel cell sector in a "strategic roadmap". The ministry said the market related to hydrogen and fuel cell products and infrastructure is expected to expand from about one trillion yen in 2030 to about eight trillion yen within two decades. While automakers expect eventual government subsidies to make fuel cell vehicles more accessible for general drivers, the price tag unveiled by Toyota on Wednesday is also a nice surprise for potential customers - it had been widely expected that a fuel cell vehicle would cost around 10 million yen. But many hurdles still need to be overcome before fuel cell vehicles become a common sight on roads, most notably, the network of hydrogen refuelling stations, Toyota said. The Japanese government has also said it will try to make hydrogen available at a price similar to or less than gasoline fuel, while increasing the number of hydrogen refuelling stations to about 100 next year. The company said it will initially start selling the model only in the regions "where hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is being developed". The price ranges for a fuel cell unit for the US and European markets have not been decided, Toyota said. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/toyota-names-price-for/1205882.html

Have you locked your keys in the car? Does your car have remote keyless entry? This may come in handy someday. Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk). Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a mobile phone!' Is it true. Got it from mail frm friends..Anyone experience b4?

The future is high on lithium Last Updated: 12:01am BST 09/06/2007 Lithium-ion battery-powered cars came a step closer this week, writes Andrew English American giant General Motors signed development contracts with two companies (Compact Power of Michigan and Continental of Germany) for the advanced development of lithium-ion batteries for its hybrid electric Volt concept. GM hopes to have the Volt, which has its drive train mounted on the chassis rails from the Astra hatchback, on sale by 2012. "The first Volt to go on sale will be the fuel-cell version," said Dr Christopher Borroni-Bird, GM's director of advanced technology, who warned that without government incentives to consumers such technology might be still born. "We can't go on subsidising this business forever," he said. At the same time, Mitsubishi UK MD Jim Tyrrell has confirmed he has asked for 3,000 lithium-ion versions of the Mitsubishi "i" to come to Britain when it goes on sale in 2010. (The petrol-powered "i" goes on sale this summer.) The battery-powered "i" will dispense with the heavy in-rear-wheel motors on the concept car and use a simpler single motor, driving the front wheels. "They will test the car in Tokyo from August," says Tyrrell. "They hadn't planned to sell in Europe until I told them about the congestion charges." So does this mean the fuel cell is dead? Yes, if you believe Ricardo CEO Dave Shemmans. "Battery cars will overtake fuel cells; even the Japanese think that," he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.j...09/mnvolt09.xml mitsubishi r tied with Yuasa on the new battery development. mitsu own sista company MHI r also developing newer batteries for cars.

JB NIGHTMARE FOR SINGAPOREAN. Confusion over tinted windows, coupled with his fears of car-jacking landed Singapore LW Sim in a Johor Baru jail. His is a shocking lesson for Singapore drivers who ay not know that tinted windows which meet with the LTA's requirements could get you into trouble in Malaysia. This is because Malaysia has stricter laws on the amount of light that must be able to pass through tinted car windows. Mr Sim, 29, found this out the hard way when he refused to let JB police impound his car for further checks. He was arrested and place in a police lock-up. The sub-contractor was later charged in court with obstructing justice and jailed a day. Mr Sim had driven his 3 year old Honda Civic to JB for a shopping trip on 11 Mar. At about 6.30pm that day, he was approached by a traffic policeman in a car park near City Square, s shopping complex at Jalan Wong Ah Fook in JB. He was waiting for his two Malaysia friends, who were withdrawing money from a nearby Maybank branch. Mr Sim recalled:

Hi all, Chanced upon a new Fabia which was smashed by falling trees in the Alps. Nevertheless, the passenger cell remains intact with minimal signs of intrusion. I cannot imagine the result if it is a Japanese compact saloon.
