  1. Source: https://mothership.sg/2024/09/truck-man-can-carry-van/ Some days you're just hanging by your fingertips. A video on social media shows a truck heading down a highway loaded with an unusual and precarious cargo: a whole van. Truckzilla The arrangement appeared to be secured by at least two straps, which appear to be attached to the rear wheels of the van, and the bed of the Isuzu truck. For an extra little hint of safety to the whole affair, a warning "flag" was attached to the passenger van, in the form of a large red plastic bag. The driver of the camera vehicle tailed the van carrying truck for at least 30 seconds, at one point voicing what many people felt when watching it: "Apa ini? Tak malu?" ("What is this? [Do they have] no shame?") Weight limits and warning flags Comments on the the video were scathing, with several suggesting that the police or the Land Transport Authority (LTA) should be alerted, suggesting that the load was illegal. On Reddit, there was significant debate as to what specific law the truck was breaking. In July 2024, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat was asked by MP Gan Thiam Poh about the conditions mandated by LTA for vehicles transporting "very large and bulky items on public roads" — which probably includes a van. Chee replied that vehicles transporting large and bulky items were subject to regulations. All loads on such vehicles are required to be properly secured. From the hardly-conclusive 30 seconds of footage, the truck did encounter some bumps, and the van moved up and down with those bumps. However, it did not appear in danger of falling off at that particular moment. The other requirement is that if the vehicle's load extended beyond its rear by more than 30cm, it needed a visual warning for other road users in the form of "a clean red flag". While a plastic bag isn't much, it's something. Tall, but not too tall The One Motoring website says another requirement is that vehicles whose height exceeds 4.5m require a police escort. The height of the truck bed and the van did not appear to breach that. So while the setup certainly had a hazardous feeling to it, it remains unclear whether it was actually illegal. One commenter noted that the Isuzu truck had a Y-plate, indicating that it was a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), and thus had a weight limit of about 3,500 kg. One Motoring says that the maximum laden weight of an HGV was 16,000kg, but that is likely dependent on the capability of the vehicle in question. Scrapyard wars One commenter said that the van being carried was, ironically, a Suzuki Carry. They noted the van's age and lack of a licence plate, suggesting that it was destined for scrapping. Another comment on the original video said that the Carry was being carried without an engine, making it more likely that the setup met weight restrictions. What none of the comments explained was how the van was loaded on the truck bed in the first place. But they did take time to scold the driver, saying that by tailing the truck in the way he did, he had put himself in a Final Destination-style caper.
  2. I am dumbfounded. Just look at this catwalk in Paris. Certainly not something you see every day. Here is a video/slideshow. What do you think of this? I guess there is always a first!!
  3. What it's like for one teacher who already carries a gun Karl Donnelson is a science teacher in Colorado In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, there's a debate growing about what to do to protect students from shootings. President Trump said he's interested in arming teachers and other school personnel -- an idea backed by the National Rifle Association. At least four states are considering legislation that would allow educators to carry a concealed firearm in schools. Eight states already do. "I just signed up to teach kids since," said Karl Donnelson, a teacher in Colorado. "As you can see, with all my other jobs sometimes you have to do additional things at small schools, and this is one of them." Donnelson sat down with CBS News' Nikki Battiste to explain what it's like to carry a gun, while also working as a teacher. "If you're gonna protect the kids, why not give them a tool to protect them with," he said. Nikki Battiste: How long have you been a science teacher? Karl Donnelson: This is my third year. Battiste: How long have you been armed in your classroom? Donnelson: This is my first year. Battiste: What kind of gun is it? Donnelson: It's a glock, 9 millimeter. Battiste: It's concealed carry. Donnelson: Correct. Battiste: Where is your firearm? Donnelson: Can I show it to you? Battiste: Yes, please. In your cowboy boot? Donnelson: That's why I wear boots. Battiste: You didn't used to wear boots? Donnelson: No. Battiste: Is this gun loaded? Donnelson: There's nothin' in the chamber. The school board would not allow for us to put one in the chamber. Donnelson volunteered to carry a gun in his classroom, he's one of about 100 armed staff in schools across Colorado. Battiste: If you heard gunshots right now, what would you do? Donnelson: Lockdown, immediately, all the classes will have their locked doors. I would run towards the gunfire. Try to find out who it is and take care of it. Battiste: If an active shooter were to come in, you have to make a split life-or-death decision. Donnelson: Correct. Battiste: Are you ready for that? Donnelson: Yes. My biggest fear is missing and hitting a student. But that's the risk you take by carrying a gun. May I miss? Yeah, possibly. But would you rather have 50 kids killed or one? Colorado law prohibits firearms in schools, but a loophole lets districts designate armed safety officers. Armed teachers are required to pass a three-day firearms and trauma response course, which includes a simulated school shooting scenario. Battiste: How often are you being re-trained or refreshing? Donnelson: Every semester we go in and shoot the 100 percent qualification. Fifty-five percent of Colorado voters favored allowing teachers and school officials to carry guns on school grounds, according to a 2015 Quinnipiac poll. CBS News sat down with other teachers who are having the same discussion. Some admit they had mixed feelings when it first came up. "They could shoot our whole building up before we would ever have anybody get here for help," one teacher said. "As a human being, it was very saddening to me that that's what this has come to," another teacher added. Despite warning signs in front of the school, parents and staff are not told who is armed. Battiste: Do you think they have a right to know? Donnelson: That's up to the school board, administration, and if anybody asks me I tell 'em. Battiste: A lot of people would say this is a terrible idea. Donnelson: Yeah, and that's their opinion, and I respect it. But I think our community wants our students protected. We can't afford security guards, and if teachers are willing to and go through the training I think they should have the opportunity to help protect 'em. Battiste: What is the answer to keep our kids? Donnelson: There is no answer, and i'm not sayin' we're gonna stop school violence by havin' teachers with weapons, but at least it's a good start. So there is no answer, but this is what we decided as a community and as a school district. The school has other armed staff. Each had to pass a background check and a psychological evaluation. The superintendent says other schools considering arming their staffs have reached out to him for guidance. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-its-like-for-one-teacher-who-already-carries-a-gun/

  6. Just watching Crash Test Dummies on Discovery Science. Shows how dummies are used to make cars safer. Made me recall seeing some adult front seat passengers in cars with a baby or toddler carried in their lap. They don't realise...(cannot be don't care right?) how dangerous it can be if the car rear ends the vehicle in front or driver e brakes....the child could be launched forward by the momentum and crash into the windscreen. Child seats are also life savers...i suggest parents be more strict with their children when it comes to seat belts. Even for short drive to school less than 2km away, I insist my kids put on their seat belts. You can be the safest driver in the world, but there are many who are reckless or bobo.
  7. Last week I went clubbing with frens and one of them got drunk thou we know she is strong drinker. We neva see her "mah bo" before so when she is down, we are v happy coz its a rare sight ! I put her left arm over my neck, my left hand grab her arm and my right hand go over her right shoulders. Half way to the sofa, her legs give way and I had to shift my right arm from the shoulders to her waist area. The "journey" is merely 20metres and I oredi exhausted ! Is my carrying technique wrong ? 10. 2 HOURS 3 MIN AGO SINGAPORE - The Media Development Authority (MDA) has directed SingNet Pte Ltd (SingNet) to cross-carry the Barclays Premier League "live" matches over the next three seasons, starting from the 2013-14 season. Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) had announced back in Oct 2012 that it had acquired non-exclusive broadcast rights to all BPL "live" games for the next three seasons from Aug 2013 from the Football Association Premier League Limited (FAPL) for Mio TV, its subscription TV platform. However, after studying the agreement between SingTel and FAPL, the MDA found that it contained certain clauses that can prevent or restrict the same content from being acquired for transmission by other pay-TV retailers in Singapore. The MDA said that it would not be disclosing further details of these restrictions. What is clear, however, is that the restrictions trigger the Cross-Carriage Measure. According to this measure, which kicked in on Aug 1 2011, pay-TV retailers who have acquired any exclusive content on or after March 12, 2010, must widen the distribution of such content by offering it to subscribers of other pay-TV retailers. As such, SingNet must now begin the process of enabling the cross-carriage of the BPL programme on rival pay-TV retailer StarHub's platform. When contacted, StarHub welcomed the latest development. Said Jeannie Ong, its Head of Corporate Communications and Investor Relations in a statement: "We welcome the decision of the Media Development Authority (MDA) to make the Barclays Premier League (BPL) subject to the cross-carriage measure. "Singapore viewers are the biggest beneficiaries of this decision and we are excited to be able to bring the BPL to our customers on our reliable network once again." The telco, which announced last month that it was finally able to open negotiations with the FAPL, five months after SingTel's announcement in Oct 2012, added that "in light of MDA's decision, there is no longer a necessity for us to acquire the broadcast rights directly from FAPL." SingTel, however, expressed its disappointment at the decision, and said that it would be making an appeal. Said Allen Lew, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore Telecommunications for its 'Digital L!fe' division in a statement: "We are gravely disappointed with MDA's decision requiring SingNet to cross carry BPL content as it disadvantages both the consumers and the industry. "We fully intend to appeal this decision and seek legal recourse if necessary. We assure football fans that we will fight hard so they can continue to enjoy the content that they love at reasonable prices." He warned too that football fans who want to watch the BPL on its own, without subscribing to Mio TV, will probably have to pay "significantly higher fees". "We will ensure that existing SingTel customers who are on contracts will not be affected," he said. "However, those who wish to watch BPL on its own will most likely have to pay significantly higher monthly fees. "This is because it will become untenable for SingTel to subsidise the cost of BPL for such customers." http://www.todayonline.com/sports/mda-orde...-league-matches

  14. Maybe the ol'man is trying to proof he still got it. STOMPer Danny saw this serviceman in uniform making an older man, apparently his father, carry his backpack. Another NSman was previously spotted making his maid carry his backpack. STOMPer Danny said of the latest sighting: "At about 3pm yesterday, as my friends and I were going to Northpoint in Yishun for lunch, I saw yet another army boy making his father carrying his bag for him. "This is definitely unacceptable!"
  15. BARBARIC!!! How on earth they can call themselves human beings?!!! It is an insult to all the animals in the world to name these idiots animals.... From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...k_and_beat.html China students tie pigs up, then kick and beat them with metal poles These horrific photos show students in Nanning, China, tying up some pigs before beating them with metal poles, stepping on them and trying to drown them in a pail of water. STOMPer Freakazoid, who sent in these pictures, said: "This is just horrible! "The pigs were seen bleeding from the torture. "It's uncertain if the pigs survived the ordeal. "What's with these people abusing animals? I can't comprehend what they get out of this. "It's just disturbing to see people behaving worse than animals."
  16. Guns, grenades and iPads for Singapore soldiers The ministry said it was also planning to issue the devices to other servicemen next year. -AFP Mon, Jun 27, 2011 AFP SINGAPORE - New recruits to Singapore's military, air force and navy are to get a new standard-issue item of equipment besides their rifle - the iPad. The defence ministry said Monday it will be issuing "about 8,000" of the sleek, touch-screen tablet computers - already wildly popular with the city-state's tech-savvy youth - to recruits from November. The ministry said it was also planning to issue the devices to other servicemen next year. The cheapest iPad2 device currently retails in Singapore for S$668. Defence chief Neo Kian Hong said adopting the iPad would allow the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) to take advantage of the technological abilities of the city-state's youth. "By exploiting the use of popular and current information and communications technology, we are able to harness our advantage of today's technologically savvy servicemen," the Straits Times newspaper quoted him as saying. Troops can use the iPad's built-in camera to take photos and video clips in the field which can be uploaded to the SAF's online platform, LEARNet. Soldiers can use these photos and videos to carry out post-mission assessments, the newspaper said. Soldiers can send questions to their commanders through a live messaging system and group chat discussions can be held, it added. The SAF said it was working with private contractors to design apps - micro-programs tailor-made for mobile devices with a wide range of functions - for servicemen. Singapore maintains a conscript-based military and its armed forces are among the best-equipped in Asia. Every able-bodied male citizen and permanent resident aged 18 and above must undergo two years of military training.

  19. STOMPer Nathaniel spotted this NSman carrying both his own backpack and his girlfriend's handbag at Nex mall. Does this make him more of a man, the STOMPer asks. The STOMPer feels that it is unbecoming of a soldier in uniform to be carrying his girlfriend's bag, especially when the girlfriend does not need the help. The STOMPer wrote: "We went to Nex to have dinner. While walking down an escalator, we saw a strange sight. "We saw this serviceman carrying his girlfriend's handbag. "This was hilarious as we would have been making fun of a normal guy carrying his girlfriend's handbag. But a serviceman in his uniform? This was something interesting. "A question popped readily into my mind: Does this make him more of a man? "There has been a round of debate about another case involving a maid carrying a serviceman's bag. "This case raises questions about dignity and pride. "I would say that a man who carries his girlfriend's handbag is already a laughable matter as he has just lost all his dignity by allowing himself to consent to the girlfriend's whims and fancies. "However, by carrying her bag in uniform, not only did he lose his own dignity, I feel that he has lost the dignity of his nation as well. "His girlfriend is not disabled, nor was she shopping in a store or busy. "There is no excuse for him carrying her bag. "Some would argue about his "love" for the girl. Come on, there are other ways to show your love. "Carrying a handbag while in uniform is definitely not one of the ways. "We need to educate the youth of our nation to judge for themselves in situations like this and to uphold the high regard we have for our soldiers, or risk becoming the laughing stock of other nations."
  20. The photo shows a national serviceman apparently making his maid carry his backpack. Netizens are shocked over the photo that has been circulating on Facebook with the caption "'Why we need foreign talents in Singapore!" The photo was also sent in to citizen journalism website STOMP, where netizens have reacted with harsh words, calling the soldier shameful and pampered.
  21. If your GF ask you to carry her handbag, will you do so? Why or why not?
  22. SINGAPORE NEWS SINGAPORE : With immediate effect, Pay TV providers which acquire exclusive broadcast rights to any programme, must cross-carry each other's content. This applies to any contract signed or renewed from March 12. It does not affect existing contracts. The fierce bidding over rights to broadcast the upcoming World Cup matches raised concerns over the issue of 'exclusive' rights, which has affected consumers in the Pay TV market. To lock out competitors, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Lui Tuck Yew said on Friday said Pay TV operators are willing to fork out substantial amounts for exclusive rights. This has led consumers to cry foul, especially since they have to subscribe to both SingTel and StarHub - rivals in Singapore's PayTV market - for example, to catch their favourite football teams in action. This practice of holding on to exclusive content though is rare in international markets. Mr Lui said: "Content costs now constitute a significant percentage of pay TV operators' revenue, compared to international benchmarks. For example, SCV's content costs to revenue ratio has risen from 40 per cent prior to 2007 to close to 70 per cent today. This is much higher than the average 40 per cent for Pay TV operators in most other countries, including US, UK and Hong Kong. "Secondly, Singapore suffers from a high degree of content fragmentation compared to other countries. Out of 179 channels today, only seven channels are common to both SCV and SingTel. An international benchmarking exercise using a group of 16 popular channels showed that Singapore was the only country with exclusive arrangements for all 16 channels. "MDA's (Media Development Authority) review has concluded that this situation is unlikely to self-correct in the near future, and steps need to be taken to address this market failure". So under the new Media Market Conduct Code, there will be a Public Interest Obligation. This means Pay TV retailers must cross-carry each other's exclusive content. For example, if SingTel acquires a new channel exclusively, it must make this channel available to StarHub. StarHub must carry this programme at the same time SingTel is airing it - and vice versa. StarHub also cannot make any modifications to the content. This includes all the advertisements and branding SingTel may have embedded into the programme. And SingTel will have to pay StarHub to carry its exclusive content. It will be left to the telcos to work out a cost for this. For consumers, it means that they can watch an exclusive channel through just one Pay TV retailer. Consumers, regardless of which Pay TV service provider they belong to, will be charged the rate that has been stipulated by the original content provider. In the case of the example, whatever SingTel charges its customers for the exclusive content, StarHub customers will pay the same rate. Mr Lui elaborated: "Consumers would no longer require multiple set-top boxes or switch retailers each time the rights of exclusive content changes hands. This will facilitate greater consumer access to pay-TV content, and re-focus competition to other aspects, such as service differentiation and competitive packaging". For the industry, it means opening up the market to new players. The rights holder will be able to brand the exclusive content, market it and monetise it as it wishes. While the law takes immediate effect, the actually sharing of content is likely only to take place from September. For now, MDA will consult industry players, and sort out the details, like how consumers' bills will look like, and whether the review will affect new media platforms. As for how this will impact the broadcast of World Cup matches in Singapore, it is status quo for now, as SingTel and StarHub have submitted a joint bid and are waiting for FIFA's reply. Mr Lui said: "Let me just say that I am very happy that World Cup comes around only once every four years. We understand that SingTel and StarHub have recently made a new offer and negotiations with FIFA are still on-going. This is a commercial matter that is best left to the two pay-TV retailers and FIFA to settle. "I know time is running short; we are well into the second half, we are approaching injury time, but we remain hopeful that the negotiations will reach a sensible outcome." - CNA/ms Too bad, the actually sharing of content will only take place from September this year - After the World Cup.
