Today is the last day of Bukit Merah Library. I have a lot of fond memories of this library as I spent my childhood there. I remember a few forum members used to grow up around Redhill, Henderson and Bukit Merah areas. Want to catch up later there? @Angcheek, @Mustank and those I left out? Text me if you going.

Motorcyclist vigilante stops van driver from a hit-and-run with a cyclist

A round of applause for this true motorcyclist vigilante. We need more of such road users in Singapore to bring bad drivers to justice. In a recent SGRV Facebook video post, a cyclist can be seen cycling along Bukit Timah Road sometime at night when out of nowhere, a white Toyota Hiace van knocks the cyclist down. Seeing this, the motorcyclist kicked his bike into action and chased the van down to block its path. After which, he even called in the Police. According to the screenshot of the Police report in the video, the van driver claimed that he noticed that he had hit something but 'did not saw anything'. Seeing how the van driver failed his breathalyser test that was conducted after the incident, its no wonder he didn't see anything. He was arrested on the spot by the Police. Here's the full video. With the weather turning slightly wetter in the recent days, this part of the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) is turning out to be quite deadly. Shared by the 'good samaritans' of SG Road Vigilante, someone has been recording from his/her apartment some of the accidents that happened at the Jalan Anak Bukit flyover towards the direction of Jurong. As we can all see, all the four incidents had the drivers losing control of the rear of their vehicles as they crest over the left hand turn. Some of drivers looked like they oversped but not every one was doing so. We guessed these drivers all lifted off the accelerator abruptly and/or had bad tyres at the rear while negotiating the turn, causing their vehicles to go into oversteer. LTA has made this corner less treacherous than before in the recent years but it still does seem to catch quite a few drivers out. Other than having good tyres, our advice when approaching the corner is to maintain your speed and to obviously keep to the speed limit. P.S. this corner does remind us of the infamous corner, Eau Rouge of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Watch the clip and see how cars go off the corner as they lose the rear of their cars in that deadly turn.

Spotted on SG Road Vigilante's facebook page is this amusing photo of a motorbike's number plate. According to them, this was taken on 1st of July 2020 at Bukit Batok West Edge and the bike in question is a Yamaha Aerox. We have no idea why would someone flout the law to do this. To improve aerodynamics? To make the bike look bigger than it is? Or to make it harder to be identifed by the Traffic Police's camera and Traffic Police wannabes on SG Road Vigilante? What do you all think?

Another Toyota Vios has gotten into an accident similar to the white 2nd generation example that went viral few weeks back on 23 March. Thanks to an unknown vehicle's in-car camera, we can see that this black first generation Vios lost it as it crossed the metal expansion strip that joins different sections of the Anak Bukit Flyover on the PIE. As seen on SG Road Vigilante's facebook page, the car seemed like it was speeding in the drizzle when the mishap happened. Check out the lorry driver's good reaction and evasive skills in avoiding the Vios! The Vios came to a stop on lane 1 with a Prius curiously avoiding it causally. SINGAPORE - Motor group Tan Chong is shutting down its Nissan showroom in Bukit Timah after being there for nearly four decades. The last motor facility in the area, the showroom was opened in 1982. The home-grown motor group, listed in Hong Kong, said it is closing its showroom because of "falling footfall", referring to declining number of customers visiting the Bukit Timah address. It will instead focus on its two other showrooms in Ubi and Leng Kee, sites of Singapore's two "motor belts". Mr Ron Lim, head of sales and marketing at Tan Chong Motor, said: "We review our operations from time to time to ensure that our resources are optimised. In line with the reduction in COE quotas, we have seen a fall in showroom traffic at Bukit Timah and we have decided to consolidate Nissan's showroom operations at Leng Kee and Ubi. "Our service centre at Bukit Timah will continue to serve customers. "

CNA news report: Decision to construct road at Bukit Brown wasn't easy: Tan Chuan-Jin By Hetty Musfirah | Posted: 19 March 2012 2223 hrs SINGAPORE: Minister of State for National Development Tan Chuan-Jin said the decision to construct the road at Bukit Brown cemetery has not been an easy one. Writing in his Facebook page after a discussion with stakeholders on Monday evening, Mr Tan said it is understandable that the decision to proceed with the construction has caused disappointment to those who want to conserve Bukit Brown. While authorities have not been able to fully accommodate all wishes, many of the views have been taken into consideration. For instance, the decision to embark on a serious documentation of the affected graves was a result of advice received from the Heritage Society. He said the Land Transport Authority had also factored in feedback in its design of the road to minimise impact to the cemetery. Mr Tan said as documentation work on the cemetery continues, authorities are also working with interested stakeholders on public outreach to commemorate the history and heritage of Bukit Brown. - CNA/fa Why can't they just build a 'suspension bridge' accross..... San Francisco got their suspension bridge, Japan have one, China has the longest suspension bridge in the world and many countries does have their very own suspension bridges. Singapore should have one too .... The only one I remember are short one accross Kallang River from Oasis to Tanjong Rhu and the SAFTI.

Do they also provide car rental for the days that the car need to stay in the workskop for repair? Just realised this workshop is one of my insurance company (AXA) authorised workshops. Hoping to see any personal experiences from you guys if any, though i googled for some reviews and they aren't exactly positive

Last month went to Cheong Chin Nam road for their prata and realised they no more selling prata, only sell tze char, western food and others but NO prata anymore.... Damn sad.... Seems their rival Al Alzar has monopolised the prata business in Bukit Timah. Super crowded. I still prefer Al Ameen's prata.....

New mall opening at Bukit Indah in JB on the 19 Dec 2008. There is the usual stuff....Jusco and some retail outlets. How to get there ? From 2nd Link, turn off at the exit going to Johor Bahru/Pasir Gudang and exit at No. 308 (Nusajaya). At the first traffic light turn left and you will see the mall. Have fun guys....

My colleague told me his room-mate (lady nurse) was looking for a place to rent in those Bukit Ho Swee new flats (opp the lor-mee coffee shop). She saw a lady staring at her but no one else could see. Freaked her out totally. Could it be true cos those flats seemed not fully occupied although they have been built for years ?

Bukit Batok MP David Ong resigns, citing personal reasons People’s Action Party (PAP) politician David Ong is resigning as the Member of Parliament for Bukit Batok, and from his party, citing personal reasons. A by-election will be held for the single-seat ward, said the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement on Saturday afternoon. Mr Ong entered politics in the 2011 General Election and was elected as one of the MPs for Jurong GRC. In the 2015 General Election, his ward was carved out as a single seat and saw a three-way fight between Mr Ong, Singapore Democratic Party candidate Sadasivam Veriyah, and independent Samir Salim Neji. Mr Ong took 73 per cent of the vote, above the national average of 69.9 per cent.

Motorists going to Woodlands from the city, or vice-versa, will be able to use the dual two-lane flyover to bypass a stretch of Upper Bukit Timah Road between Chestnut Drive and Jalan Asas. The flyover provides an alternative route that will redistribute traffic from existing ground-level junctions at Dairy Farm Road and Hillview Road, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said yesterday. Construction for the 700m-long flyover started in the second half of 2011. Motorists can start using it from 8am on Dec 27. The LTA has advised motorists heading towards Dairy Farm Road, Hillview Road and Jalan Asas to continue to use the ground-level roads, and not the flyover, to reach their destinations. The Hillview flyover is the second one to be completed along the corridor this year. In April, the Bukit Panjang flyover was opened along a stretch of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Woodlands Road. The viaduct allows motorists to bypass the intersection of Choa Chu Kang Road, Upper Bukit Timah Road, Woodlands Road and Bukit Panjang Road . The two flyovers are part of a larger infrastructure project, which also includes widening parts of Upper Bukit Timah Road and Woodlands Road to improve overall traffic flow in the corridor. "With the enhancement of this key arterial road corridor serving the north-western part of Singapore, motorists travelling to and from Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang residential estates, as well as the Kranji and Mandai industrial estates, will enjoy a better transport experience," the LTA said. Mr Balasupramaniam, 69, a retiree, welcomes the new flyover. He said: "During the peak hours, the traffic along Upper Bukit Timah Road can be quite congested." He added that motorists heading to Woodlands would enjoy a faster drive with the flyover, as they do not have to mix with traffic that is turning into the condominiums in the area, such as along Hillview Road. Visited Tomo-Ya food trading to buy some food stuff recently. They are a wholesale supplier, but they allow walk-ins. There is no price-list or catalogue, so you have to go online to check out what you want to buy and tell them when you get there. Their staff will go into a cold room to get the frozen stuff for you. Elderly residents in Bukit Merah View can now stroll around with greater ease of mind due to enhanced road safety measures. The estate is the first of five to benefit from the Land Transport Authority's Silver Zone programme, which aims to make roads safer for elderly pedestrians. Features like enlarged centre dividers that allow for two-stage crossing are introduced. The speed limit in such zones has also been reduced to 40kmh wherever possible. Cars entering Silver Zones will see signs informing them of such zones, along with three rumble strips on the road to inform motorists to slow down. Other traffic features aimed at slowing down traffic, like chicanes - gentle curves along sections of roads - and lanes with reduced width have also been installed to ensure that cars do not speed along roads with high senior use. Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Health Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim said at the launch event on Saturday that seniors are "over-represented" in traffic accidents, and that the situation must be improved. He noted that 40 per cent of all pedestrian fatalities and 20 per cent of pedestrian injuries involved seniors. Dr Faishal, however, cautioned that road safety does not end with these silver zones and that road safety is the "shared responsibility" of all road users. The Silver Zones in Jurong West, Yishun and Bedok will be completed by the first quarter of 2015, and Marine Parade by first quarter of 2016. The five estates were chosen for their high senior population and relatively higher accident rates involving seniors. Today an accident occurred in front of me. I did not witness the collision as my eyes were not looking in front at the specific moment. Heard tires screeching, bang, looked up and saw the post dragging of the 2 cars. Taxi uncle was pointing his finger furiously, seemingly angry at the carelessness of the avante driver. I believe there were no serious injury involved and continued my way. (Youtube disabled the audio due to the songs playing from my radio)

From CNA - seems like home made bomb... KUALA LUMPUR: At least 14 people were injured, one seriously, after an explosion in front of a pub at Sun Complex in Jalan Bukit Bintang at about 4.20am on Thursday (Oct 9), Bernama reported. The explosion is believed to have resulted from a homemade bomb, the news agency reported on its Twitter account. Berita Harian Malaysia reported that police confirmed among those injured are Singaporean, Thai and Chinese tourists. The newspaper said initial police investigations indicated that the explosion was targeted towards the seriously injured victim. The Star reported that the injured were aged between 22 and 40 and included two women. They have been sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur and the nearby Tung Shin Hospital. At least four cars were hit by the explosion, according to The Star. The report said that the explosion came from two devices placed underneath two cars parked in the area - one of which was believed to be an unexploded grenade. The Star reported that the two explosive objects were thrown at the scene from the second floor of a building.

When the system senses an approaching vehicle that is too tall, it will start flashing a visual warning to alert the driver that his vehicle may hit the structure. The Land Transport Authority (LTA), which set up the system, said it will try this out for six months and gauge its effectiveness before rolling it out to more locations. The LTA said incidents involving vehicles hitting overhead structures are relatively low but added that a damaged overhead road structure can pose grave danger to all road users.
