As you may (or may not) have noticed, the Editorial Team here at Sgcarmart has started a new series, titled Sgcarmart Explores, where we look and recommend some of the more interesting spots across the various districts of Singapore. And save for the Christmas special of the series we did last December (please do catch it here, the whole team spent an entire day out driving and shooting to craft this one), we have always started each iteration of the series questioning the assumption that Singapore is a boring place. Thank God we have yet to incur the public ire that one Malaysian actor-host Hero Tai took after making remarks to the same effect on a Taiwanese show. But the sheer amount of backlash Mr. Tai received does beg the question: Is Singapore really boring to begin with? I mean, if you've been living here for some time, I'm sure you're also finding it difficult to find new activities to join every weekend (after attending to all those spill-overs from work aside that is). Take this video for a case in point, which explores a little more about why our island’s shopping malls (the typical retreat for many of us I reckon), are so boring. I don't see many comments disagreeing with the assumption that our shopping malls here are boring. Of course, there's more to do than just shopping here in Singapore, but I think Mothership's point about how high land rents drive all malls to simply house the most economically viable tenants and thus leads to most malls sharing the same popular chains is rather important. Surely some economic forces must be at play to explain why there's so much renovation and bubble tea stores around central Toa Payoh, unless the buildings here are especially dilapidated and somehow manage to attract only contractors that must have the very best refreshments? Perhaps we simply don't have the spare space here for less economically profitable activities. So let us take the assumption that Singapore is a touch boring. Well, what now? What can we do next as a nation to bring back a bit more interest to our sunny island? Do we, perhaps, need a bit of the grime that is commonplace in other cities? I personally reckon a little bit could be the answer here. I mean, there's plenty of people out there that bemoan the loss of Hong Kong's infamous walled city. Look at this video, and the comments to it for example: I promise if you're into architecture and urban theory this channel is a treasure trove. And on a side note, why are architects so attractive? But back to the topic at hand. I'm sure many are just looking back at Kowloon's Walled City with rose-tinted glasses. After all, as the video points out, unsavoury crime, drug use, and I'm sure all manner of abuse and exploitation were also ongoing before the city was demolished. But grit, after all, is forged by enduring difficult times. Would Van Gogh have painted The Potato Eaters were it not for his witnessing of the poverty that plagued the rural peasantry of the 19th century? Or would Francisco Goya have painted the Black Paintings if he had not lived through the depravity of post-Napoleonic Spain? And to steer back to the topic at hand once again, some of Singapore's more interesting areas (by my reckoning, that is) including Chinatown, Katong, Geylang, or Tiong Bahru, to name a few, are the products of a history that has seen a fair bit of lawlessness. Perhaps some tough neighbourhoods also spawn more interesting urban landscapes. Will time alone eventually carve Sengkang a character that is entirely different from the one that is present in Punggol? I like to think not. Join us as we share more about our other interests and bring you new places to visit! So instead of always looking out for the next hot new location to visit, perhaps we ought to put in a bit of thought into preserving what we have, to ensure that our existing neighbourhoods have the time to develop a character all on their own. The recent proposal of the preservation of People's Park Complex is a move in the right direction by the authorities, but we too can show our support for the preservation of our neighbourhoods by visiting the retailers within them, and participating in activities such as this series of Heritage Trails proposed by the National Heritage Board here to send a clear message to the powers that be that these spaces are still utilised and beloved. In the same spirit, the Editorial Team is going to put in the effort and take time out of our busy schedules to populate this space with some new and alternative content (just like our new Explores series) from fields that we already know and love beyond the various automotive material already available on Sgcarmart. All we ask is that you look out for our quips about everyday life and the issues that we feel need to be more spoken for (as well as a touch of YouTube recommendations and even some photographic content), here on the blog in the coming weeks. And maybe join us in stepping out of your comfort zone, to stop simply heading to the nearest shopping centre, and support some of the alternative destinations that we highlight in our Explores series. I hope you don't find any of it too boring. -Clarence

My sprog is in Primary 5, for the first time so far - last night I was truly disappointed in the school system. By and large, I find the schools are doing a pretty decent job - so far the education has been going pretty well, I haven't always agreed with what they teach. But hey, I don't need to - they have been doing it rather well. Last night, chatting with the kid - it is the first time I have been seriously upset at what they are doing. Just had the "Chinese Composition" exam for first semester, and we were chit chatting about what she wrote. Apparently they were given picture prompts - about a boy bullying his grandma, running into the road and almost getting run over. Well ok, putting aside the rather ham fisted and heavy handed moralising - we talked about what she said next... I suggested a story line of... Seeing the boy in danger, Superman came flying out of the sky, and stopped the car just in time, lifting it up to protect the boy. But then, when he found out what had happened, he said "Nah - you don't deserve to be rescued" where upon he dropped the car onto the boy, turning him into ketchup. Crotch spawn informed me that if she wrote that, she would be marked down for "going out of context" - WTF????? Out of context? No wonder the kids are so boring - they have to tell a predictable and "moral" story - In my day, we were encouraged to try and shock / surprise the teacher. Not write stories to some freaking boring formula!!! Blardy hell - how to move forward like that?

How do we tell the difference? Let's say someone don't earn much. By being frugal, he has some small savings and is perfectly ok with not owning a car or living in a condo ever. At work, he is quite happy where he is and not trying to move further up. At home, just play PC games and go for occasional movie / window shopping on weekends Is this considered contented or slack? Above is hypothetical example only

Hi Bro & Sis, Due to my careless, bang into taxi backside. https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=22CE05F99DB75C62!900&authkey=!AFDqSvPPungs218&ithint=folder%2cpdf I admit it is my fault for not observing the taxi closely. If you view the photos taken, in fact, the taxi has no impact rather my japanese car. Well, he don't wish to private settle, he says go report.... I had watched the video repeatedly, i personally feel that he could have filtered out. Sharp or smooth break, Watch the video the comment it ba. (It all depends on how drivers view it). I know you guys would ask me how come i did not brake, because i am looking at right side, knowing that there is no incoming car, slowly let go brake who knows he sharp brake, and if you watch the video there is no incoming car at all. One of the video he walked out and said there is incoming car. I shall be reporting tomorrow morning, just want to see how forumers response, of course, i know i am paying tho.

There is some action at the beginning and end. The middle is mostly talking. Not much in character developement, not very funny, not very suspenseful, not very thrilling at all. Given a choice, I'd rather watch Thor twice.

Most of it was just Harry, Ron and Hermione shaking leg in various ulu places. There was no real sense of excitement or urgency. I went into the movie thinking it was 1hr 45mins long but in reality it was 145 mins so my boredom was extended by an extra hour. Given another choice, I rather watch Megamind twice. You have been warned.

Life without hope is dead??.... actually it's not so serious. But life without fantasy? ...... If you are looking for sexual fantasy here, wrong number Since this is MCF with a big "C", my fantasy will be thingking up a list of cars I want to own if someone else is writing the cheques... What's your fantasy?? I want these cars badly:- 1. A high-power black (body n windows) top luxury MPV (for the family, as the rest of this list has little to do with them, LOL) 2. My favourite driver's car: Lotus Exige or Caterham, or a Ariel Atom, or a the KTM dont know what... (one of these will do, me not greedy) 3. No Ferraris/Lambor/Veron etc not my cup of kopi coz for me these are too high-priced and achieve not much more than #2... and too loud, I prefer at least a few keys lower. 4. Holdern Maroo........ great power, great noise, and can carry bikes, nursery plants, 2nd hand fridge / furniture.... even blangah workers behind!!! 5. Classic mini cooperS with 156hp, no less (my trips everyday will be Italian Job!!! 6. Something like a Mitsubishi DoubleCab 4X4 short pickup with big diesel turbo and monster tyres, full-chrome roll cage (faked one will do), lots of bumper/roof-top search lights..... (can fetch family out coz it's a double-cab) ...... go anyway anytime!! 7. A beat-up old Proton sedan but put a Evo9 engine infront.... fast but cheap-looking, can park anyway in MY and not worries of having it stolen!! 8. One of those JDM supercharge 660cc K-car for going around in HDB estates for errands etc.... very conveneint and ecomomical!! 9. No Merc/Beemer/ but wont mind another Alfa just for a change from driving the above 8 car.... Dream on.....................

My vote goes to HONDA ! Congratulation !!!!! Reason : Honda is no longer a ''Honda'' now , In the past , Honda create good cars like S2K , Integra , Type Rs and etc... But today , Honda stop production of all the Type Rs , S2K and even the NSX , and it is very sad . Honda please come back and create at least one car which is similiar like the S2K I don't wanna see Honda create 10 cars over 10 which is all about fuel efficient !!! Honda !!!!! your slogan is POWER OF DREAM !!! But then , we can't deny their reliability , their reliability is still there . Anyway , i am not hating Honda because i own one too Cheers .

are we all deemed to be driving really boring and dull cars in today's world??? major renowned car manufacturers sure seem to be producing many models in their stable, however, they fail to excite customers.... the Chinese however, duplicate copies on such 'boring and dull' cars, making them into much livelier designs....or at least something unique.... why can't mainstream car manufacturers create something with a WOW factor, something currently only Ferrari's/ Lamborghinis customers have the privilege to ascertain to???

Went to the CNY bazaar last night. The bazaar area was damn big.... with a huge stage and big beer garden. Crowd was there. Traffic was madness. Everything seems ok except for 1 thing

Sometimes i really wonder what goes through the mind of some drivers on our local road. I was travelling on ECP at about 2330hrs last night, en route home from a nice dinner. In a mellow mood, I was merely cruising along at 80-90kmh in the middle lane, minding my own business while listening to the soothing of Norah Jones on the CD player telling me something about the night being lonely. The enjoyment was interrupted first by some loud exhaust noise from behind me, and then by a pair of glaring HID headlights that belonged to the same car. The car began tailgating my porsche for no reason at all. I guessed from my earlier years of street racing that he wanted an impromptu race with me. The temptation to give in was really strong. But what really stopped me was the thought of my wife and kids waiting at home for me. So I signalled left and gave way, filtering to the third lane to let the fast and furious zoom pass. The nuisance of a car pulled up next to mine, and I saw that it was a white civic Type R, belonging to the latest generation. The driver was young and so were his 3 grinning male passengers. Some unidentified disco music was playing from their stereo, at a volume that made me worry for the aural health of the 4 young men in the car. I waved them on, indicating that I am not in the slightest interested to race. The passenger gave me a thumbs down sign with a smirk and they blasted off into the night. Yeah I was pissed off a little but I refrained from doing what would have given me immense hedonistic satisfaction at that point in time, which was to plant the right foot on the accelerator and unleash the steeds of hell, all 500 of them, on the object of my ire. Instead I chose to follow my original plan of arriving home to my loved ones safely. I guess age does mellow a man to a certain extent. Instead of writing a story filled with excitement, I guess the truth is more appropriate here. Please drive safely. You can never be the fastest on the roads forever. :) To the driver of the civic, if you're here and reading this: yes i could have raced you. But unlike you, I probably have a lot more at risk than you. Just enjoy yourself but mind your safety and the safety of others. Cheers!

what to do on a rainy day weekend... bored!

As per topic, anyone ?
-
To me, Singapore is 1 of the boring places you can find on earth.
-
Please correct me if I'm wrong. I understand that a bored throttle body will improve low-end torque (and therefore increase FC) whilst changing your final drive ratio will improve your high-end torque (and therefore decrease FC). If I were to do these two mods together, what's the final effect? Will I have both improved low- and high-end torque? Or will these be cancelled out? Also, what will happen to my FC? An overall increase, decrease or no change? Thanks!

1. Sian, another boring Sunday and is still wondering where to bring the kids out? No, not another places of interest, like Zoo or bird park. Not another shopping centres with crowd! 2. Thought of going to some quiet places, some makan with somethings to keep kids occuppied. 3. Weekend is more eventful at north but in SG, such a boring country. Any good suggestions to kill time? Thank you very much. Regards,
