(Pic / File) A trip to Cathay Cineleisure became a nightmare for Sheena Tan, 24. The air stewardess suffered bedbug bites, leaving seven itchy welts on her leg. Tan visited the cinema with her boyfriend Felix Tan, 28, a financial analyst. The couple were watching Transformers 3 when she felt her thighs itching after 10 minutes. She thought it was a mosquito bite, so she ignored it. But the itch became unbearable and she switched seats with her boyfriend. Tan lodged a complaint against Cathay. The cinema operator claims this is a rare incident and they have cleaned the cinema thoroughly, but any bug climbing into the cinemas are beyond their

  5. What a tragedy, hope this will not happen in SG...... http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...007-240998.html Macaque abducts, bites and drops baby from roof Baby dies after monkey attack By Chitra S. Nathan and Lester Kong SEREMBAN, Malaysia - In mere minutes, a young woman turned from a happy mother to a grieving one when she lost her four-day-old baby to a wild monkey that was shot dead several hours later. At 1.15pm yesterday, the macaque stole into the living room; snatched the child and fled up the roof of the house. The baby fell to the ground and died. The mother, V. Revathy, 26, had left her first-born child in the living room of the single-storey house near Taman Happy Garden to use the toilet. The baby's body was discovered later outside the house with her face and neck badly bitten. She was rushed to the Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital here where she was pronounced dead. Revathi's father-in-law A. Valayutham, 70, was in the living room with the newborn but had gone to get a glass of water when the tragedy occurred. "We frantically searched all over the house and saw her body covered in blood lying outside the house," he said. Valayutham added that he had noticed a few monkeys outside the house compound at that time. The area where the family stayed was sandwiched between two residential areas with a foliage of trees nearby where there were monkeys. Negri Sembilan Wildlife and National Parks director Ishak Muhamad said the macaque was shot dead at 4pm. "We suspect the macaque was rummaging for food inside the house. It could have taken the baby to the roof thinking the newborn was food. "The baby died when it fell to the ground. The monkey had apparently released the newborn, probably because it was alarmed by the parents' shouts," Ishak said yesterday. He added that the parents had called the Fire and Rescue Department at 2.15pm, which immediately contacted the Wildlife and National Parks Department. "We reached the house at about 3pm and set off with the baby's father to look for the macaque," he said. Ishak said department officers saw the macaque in some bushes several metres from the house at about 4pm. The macaque was shot when it began to act aggressively. Ishak added that it was the first such case in the state, and believed the male monkey was attracted by a female kept in captivity as a pet by the family. "This is very unusual. Normally, these monkeys simply steal food or pluck fruit from the yard," he said. The baby's father, lorry driver V. Neru, 29, who was not at home when the incident occurred, said he could not believe that such a thing could have happened. "I rushed to the hospital only to be told that she was gone. "She was our bundle of joy and we were looking forward to spending many happy years with her ... I just cannot believe she's gone," he said. R. Shanty, 35, who lives nearby said it was common to see monkeys in groups of three or four in the area. "A while back, my pet dog was attacked by these monkeys. Its badly-bitten body was thrown from a tree. "I really hope the authorities take action and not wait until another life is lost," she said. Rahang assemblyman M.K. Arumugam, who visited the family yesterday evening, expressed regret over the incident. "I have brought this matter up before but sadly no action was taken. I am very disappointed that something like this had to happen before the authorities took notice," he said.
  6. hello people i'm having a big headache. my dog is a jack russell terrier. it's kinda hyper active but i dont blame him for that. i bring him for long walks like 1 hour++ each time. sometimes walk 2 times a day. what i'm fed up is he pretends to bite me whenever i try to adjust his seat belt/collar or when he is just plain excited. when i say pretend to bite, it's like he put his mouth like gonna bite but he uses minimal force to chew which only hurts sometimes when he really too excited. i got bitten when i tried to adjust my dog's car seatbelt. and it hurt me quite alot as there are 3 deep scratches on my hand. after i said OWWW YOU FARKER!, he tried to lick the wound and made his usual whining noises. i know he doesnt do this on purpose and i love him alot. i know there's still hope for my baby. other then that he is okay. really friendly and stuff. he is really protective and he hates it when we walk past some ah peks and they stare at me, he barks at them. i hear from my friend, he ask me to make putting on collars/safety belts more enjoyable. i put him on a retractable leash so he can roam around his "playground" when my parents are on the way home or leaving the house. but sometimes my maid leashes him cause she need to open the house doors. BUT. he actually BITES thru the leash, breaking it and he even knows how to pretend that the leash has not been broken by only running around his play ground because when he is on the retractable leash he has only enough string to run around his play ground. he waits for the main gate to open and out he goes. . . i just discovered this new "trick" of his today. he has so far spoilt 3 retractable leashes. i prefer the retractable leash cause it gives him more area to cover and he can do his poopoo on the grass. oh, he also thinks that bicycles, motorcycles are all out to bang him down and he hates them. i know him for about 2 months already he was a stray puppy (someone lost/abandoned him) and i brought him home. carried him all the way for 30mins. my arms were so farking sore. but i always felt i made the right decision. he was so dehydrated and he was starving when i took him to the vet for a check up. he is so special in his own cute little ways. but kinda aggressive sometimes. tho unintentionally. so, anyone have these problems with your jacks? how to solve? i want to train him myself but it seems that i am not fierce enough no matter how i shout NO. low pitch high pitch both also he thought i want to play with him. the louder i scold him the more excited he gets. i cannot cage him as he makes too much noise and it breaks my heart to hear him whine. and i'm afraid he'll disturb the neighbours.

Home > Breaking News > Singapore > Story Sep 16, 2008 Wages eroded by inflation: MOM Govt data shows average real earnings shrinking 4% due to high inflation By Sue-Ann Chia LATEST government wage figures confirm a trend that was evident a few months ago - high inflation eating into wage gains. The Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) report on employment in the second quarter showed that workers across the board were worse off compared to a year ago, with real earnings - pay minus the effect of inflation - actually falling. Wages grew 3.1 per cent in nominal terms between April and June. But the impact of soaring food and fuel prices - with inflation hitting a 26-year-high of 7.5 per cent in June - eroded such gains. Workers, in effect, ended up seeing their real wages shrink by 4 per cent on average, compared to the same period last year. The services sector was hardest hit, with workers' real earnings falling the most, by 4.6 per cent. The dip was 2.3 per cent for those in manufacturing and 0.5 per cent for construction workers. Inflation's squeeze on income first surfaced in the January to March period. But it was not so dismal then. Wage growth was still in positive territory, propped up by a 10.6 per cent increase in total wages over the same quarter a year ago, the highest in almost a decade. Then, only manufacturing workers saw their real wages shrink due to inflation. But the malaise has now spread to other sectors owing to weaker wage increases in the second quarter. Analysts are not optimistic that the real wage situation will improve even though inflation is expected to lessen towards the end of this year. That is because they expect wage increases to continue to lag behind inflation. One reason for this, said DBS Bank economist Irvin Seah, is the economy's anaemic state. The labour market is expected to soften, with more bosses halting hiring plans or scaling down wage increases. 'It is quite likely that real wages will remain in the negative territory till the end of the year. Even if it bounces back, it will be very weak growth,' he said. His conclusion was borne out by a recent survey of 218 employers by the Singapore Human Resource Institute (SHRI) and Remuneration Data Specialists. It found that wage increases will hover around 5.3 per cent this year, higher than last year's 4.5 per cent. But this is below the annual inflation forecast of 5 to 6 per cent. But SHRI executive director David Ang pointed out that companies were doing their part to help workers cope. Almost half of those it polled are giving workers a one-off payment to offset the higher cost of living. Another key finding from yesterday's MOM report: Labour productivity declined for the third straight quarter. The contraction, at 7.5 per cent, was steep compared to 2.7 per cent in the first quarter this year, and 3.7 per cent in the October to December period of last year. MOM attributed the poor productivity to many new jobs being created as employers hire in anticipation of the need for more workers to cope with new projects. A total of 71,400 jobs were added in the second quarter, on the back of record gains in the construction industry due to the building boom, the report said. Job creation in the first half of the year hit a record 144,600, compared to 113,800 in the same period last year. Retrenchment also eased to 1,798 after rising for two consecutive quarters. Among laid-off workers, 78.7 per cent got re-employed within six months of being retrenched. This is higher than the 66.5 per cent in the previous quarter, and the 70 per cent in the same period last year. But analysts like Standard Chartered Bank economist Alvin Liew are not so sanguine about job prospects in the second half of the year. '2008 is going to be weaker than last year, as growth is going to be bleaker,' he said. [email protected] http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_279061.html
