  2. Are you a new millionaire, a drug dealer, part of the mafia or someone who turned into an instant VIP thanks to a video you uploaded on youTube? Well it is time to get an armored car then if you value your life. Sure you will have bodyguards and all but they are good till you are outside the car, not in. Obviously this is for people whom are not residing in Singapore, because I mean, seriously.. how threatened do you feel here? Armoured cars are like vast, heavy tanks with wheels that can be driven with anyone who holds a class 3 license. They are certified to stop anything from poisoned gas to IEDs. The idea of armoured cars are simple. It's basically a normal car fitted with lots of Kevlar, titanium , thick glass, run flat tyres and stuff. Having said that do not make your own because there are established luxury automakers whom are more than capable. So lets start shall we? The Audi A8 L Security can hit 100km/h in 7s thanks to its 6.3-litre W12 engine that produces 500bhp and 624Nm of torque. The car can withstand shots from high-powered rifles and blasts from IEDs and hand grenades. The cabin can pump fresh air during the event of a chemical attack and a button has been installed to make it easier to knock out the heavily armored doors. Most armored cars are subtle but this $8 million Rolls-Royce Phantom EWB is unlike most armored cars. It can withstand blasts from grenades and bullets from AK-47s despite being covered in 120kg worth of gold. Want something a little British? How about the Jaguar XJ Sentinel, besides Land Rovers are mainly used by Mafia's anyway, we need class right? It can withstand a blast from up to 14kg of TNT in addition to offering protection from assault rifles and machine guns. Performance wise the 3.2tonne leaping cat is powered by a 385bhp 5.0-litre V8 that hits 100km/h in under 10 seconds. RENNtech decided to tune the Mercedes-Benz S600 Guard to make it easier to escape from danger. The ECU was redone; a carbon fiber airbox was added and the intercooler pump was substantially strengthened. All told the S600 Guard now has 640bhp, up from 517bhp, and 1049Nm of torque. The Maybach 62 Guard is a massive luxury sedan has been beefed up by an additional 408kg worth of steel and Kevlar reinforcements. Despite the heft, the Maybach's twin-turbo V12 can still hit 100km/h in 5.7 seconds before maxing out to an electronically limited top speed of 249km/h. Picture Credit: CarBuzz
  3. I remember posting about Russian armoured automobile maker Dartz about a year or so ago. That time it was basically a Hummer on steroids called the Prombon. Now Dartz, in collaboration with Gray Design, have come up with the Dartz Nagel. This is even more outrageous. An armoured sportsback larger than a Rolls Royce Phantom (5.3 meters long, 2.2 meters wide) and meant to tow luxury yachts and speedboats. A car a large as a house but looks like a 4 door coupe ala Mercedes Benz CLS. Photographs don't do this moving boulder justice. Sometimes, these Russians amaze the heck out of us. I get very amazed watching Sukhoi SU30s do incredible low speed maneuvers (at airshows), seen those large Russian Mil helicopters dump tons of water over fires (in a demonstration), felt the robustness of an AK47 and have even met a 75 year old Russian rocket scientist/engineer (who was still employed at the time) due to my line of work but when it comes to making cars, the Russians seem to think in ways weirder than even the Americans, who are basically king of oversized vehicles with their extra large SUVs and trucks. So the scheduled for 2012 Dartz Nagel is made for towing yachts, but it already is a land yacht in my opinion. It is huge and must run a modified truck engine as according to the press release, the Nagel makes 2000bhp. No torque figures were released but the specs say that it can tow yachts up to 5 tons in weight and up to 15meters long. It can also top 250km/h if it isn't towing a yacht. This is even with a whole lot of body armour. I suppose this is in case someone tries to hijack the yacht that the Nagel is towing. Yeah, right. Maybe they should keep an eye out for Somali pirates in Russia. And I have to share this little item with you readers, the last paragraph in the summary of the Dartz Nagel -

    Armoured Land Rover

Land Rover has announced the new Discovery 4 armoured vehicle for those customers seeking extra protection from assassinations (I suppose!). Developed with security specialists Centigon, the armour fittings include ballistic steel plates against high-velocity ballistics as well as blast protection against 15 kg of TNT, or its equivalent. The under floor protection is able to withstand two DM51 hand grenades. The vehicle's armour fitting is in accordance with European standards. The vehicle also comes fitted with heavy wheels and run-flat tires. Powering the Discovery 4 is a 5.0 liter LR-V8 petrol engine developing 375 PS and 510 Nm of torque. The huge capacity powerplant is good for a 0 to 100 km/h accerlation time of 10.6 seconds. It sounds kind of sluggish but we have to take into consideration that the Discovery 4 has a curb weight of 3550 kg (not including certain options) given all of its extra padding. That is more than 2 times the weight of a VW Passat 1.8. Expect it to be a thirsty fellow. Chassis upgrades include an air suspension, new air springs, revised damper settings, biggers roll bars and Alcon heavy-duty brakes to bring all that weight to a halt. The all-wheel drive Discovery 4 Armoured is also fitted with a Terrain Response System which has various settings that adapt to most types of surfaces such as mud, grass or rocks. I guess the Land Rover Discovery 4 would be suited to ferry high ranking officers in the armed forces.
