  1. It is not about Singapore (human) population but still a piece of good news. The efforts of our zoological team pay dividends. And 998 is quite an auspicious number too. 🙃 Bountiful baby year: S’pore wildlife parks welcomed close to 1,000 newborns in 2024 Source: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/bountiful-baby-year-spore-wildlife-parks-welcome-close-to-1000-newborns-in-2024 It was a huge bundle of joy for Mandai Wildlife Reserve in 2024 as it welcomed 998 baby animals across its parks. The bumper births surpassed 2023’s 970 newborns, which was then the highest number of babies the wildlife parks have collectively produced since 2013. Among the new additions are 34 species listed as threatened under the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species, Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) said on March 27. Singapore Zoo One of them was Putri, a proboscis monkey whose wild populations are declining due to habitat loss from deforestation for timber and oil palm plantations. Putri, whose name means “princess” in the Malay and Indonesian languages, is the second offspring to parents Malaka and Jeff. She can often be seen playing with her brother Bayu or clinging to her mother at the proboscis monkey habitat. Of the 143 species that gave birth in 2024, 23 are part of internationally managed breeding programmes such as the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria’s Ex-situ Programme. The arrival of five slender-tailed meerkat pups – the twins residing at the Great Rift Valley of Ethiopia and the triplets at Wild Africa – marks the first births of the species since 2019, said MWG. Adding to the list of crowd charmers is a female Linne’s two-toed sloth named Hope and three oriental small-clawed otters. Another highlight was the arrival of two Goeldi’s monkeys – the first infants in nine years – along with four ring-tailed lemurs and two emperor tamarins. In the realm of reptiles and amphibians, the endangered golden mantella and black-legged poison frog were among the key breeding successes, said MWG. “These species require highly specific water conditions for reproduction, and the animal care team achieved a breakthrough by studying and fine-tuning optimal water parameters,” it said, adding that the team also simulated natural seasonal changes, such as adjusting temperatures and humidity, to improve breeding success. “In a crucial step, eggs were carefully retrieved for assisted hatching, to maximise chances of survival.” The efforts put in led to a total of 31 golden mantella hatchlings, which was the highest in three years. According to MWG, another of its key breeding efforts focused on the Chrisangi leaf insect, a species native to Singapore, to prevent extinction and support conservation efforts. Night Safari A bounty of fawns were also birthed at Night Safari in 2024. Among the additions were three Malayan sambar deer, five barasinghas, and a male hog deer. The arrival of three Turkmenian markhor kids also marked a milestone as the first offspring for the species in five years. Markhors, with their wide hooves, are perfectly adapted to the rocky, mountainous terrains that they inhabit in the wild. MWG also welcomed a male woylie, the fifth joey born at Night Safari since 2021, at the Tasmanian Devil Trail. The joey, which initially stayed close to its mother after birth, is now growing bolder, curiously exploring its habitat and engaging in enrichment activities. River Wonders At River Wonders, it welcomed two special additions – a giant anteater pup and a West Indian manatee calf. Solana, the fifth pup born to Zapata and Iapura, has transitioned to a solid diet of ant eggs and boiled eggs. As she continues to get used to the presence of keepers, the playful young one often climbs onto its mother’s back for comfort. Meanwhile, the shy West Indian manatee calf at the Amazon Flooded Forest has formed a friendship with a young female born in 2023. The two can often be seen grazing together. The latest calf, like her buddy, was bottle-fed by the aquarists and tended to round the clock as no nursing behaviour was observed from its mother. The endangered Lake Titicaca frog was also successfully bred by River Wonders in the same year it was first exhibited. The blue discus, a tropical fish native to South America, continues to thrive with 80 new members joining the school. Bird Paradise High conservation value species like the golden parakeet and yellow-mantled chattering lory were born in Bird Paradise in 2024. To ensure their survival, eggs that were neglected or abandoned in the aviaries were safely retrieved and incubated at its breeding and research centre. According to MWG, newly hatched chicks are placed in a specially controlled environment. The chicks will be hand-raised and gradually exposed to fluctuations in temperature and humidity, preparing them for release to the aviaries. Other notable baby birds included first-time hatchings for MWG, such as the blue-winged leafbird, Madagascar teal and Meller’s duck as well as the first Nyasa lovebird and green honeycreeper hatchlings in over seven years. They also celebrated its first-ever penguin hatchlings with two gentoo penguin chicks born to first-time parents Riki and Peach, and one to parents Citrus and Enzo.

    Zebras

On a recent podcast episode, this hilarious nugget of information was brought up: "Zebras have the loudest farts". What. I have spent some time Googling this, and I cannot yet definitely verify the accuracy of this statement. But there is some scientific basis to it - zebras are hindgut fermenters, and there's a whole bunch of biology behind it but the important takeaway is that yes, zebras fart plenty. This also explains their 'bum-heavy' shape, similar to cows, horses, elephants, and even rabbits. Zebras are a fascinatingly strange animal. Here are some other fun facts about zebras: 1. Zebras are black. There's some debate over whether zebras are 'black with white stripes' or 'white with black stripes'. The correct answer is the first one. Zebras have black skin, and their fur grows from follicles containing melanocyte cells. A more comprehensive explanation can be found here. 2. Zebra stripes are like fingerprints Each zebra's stripe pattern is unique and identifiable, making them similar to human fingerprints. 3. No one knows for sure why zebras have stripes There are many theories, and currently the most accepted one is to do with dealing with fly bites. Nature's 'OFF!'. A study found that striping was more common in areas with higher density of biting flies, which suggests that zebra's stripes was an evolutionary solution to deal with pesky flies. Can't say I blame them. Another theory is to do with thermoregulation, as zebras are only native to Eastern and Southern Africa. 4. A group of zebras is called a 'dazzle' That's just a hilariously appropriate nomenclatural choice, and also kinda cute. 5. Zebras can sleep standing up Similar to horses (who zebras share genealogical heritage with), zebras are able to lock their joints and take naps while standing up. This allows them to quickly awaken and run away from predators. A true power nap. 6. A new born can run one hour after birth Talk about overachievers. And fully grown, zebras have a top speed of 65km/h - fast enough to get 4 demerit points on many Singapore roads. Nature is (David Attenborough voice) really fascinating. And yet with all that said, I still don't know if zebra farts are the loudest.
  3. Something that bugs me a lot. To swerve or not to swerve to avoid hitting an animal if it suddenly darts out onto the road infront of you. In Singapore's context, usually a dog, cat, sambar deer, monkeys? What else? Our natural instinct would be to swerve right? I'm an animal lover and instinctively, I would as well. But is that really the right thing to do? There's so many factors to consider, road condition, any cars near me, will the car behind me be able to stop safely? But fact is we don't have the luxury of time to analyze. What are the consequence of swerving to avoid hitting an animal? You place your passengers at risk, most will react by swerving left or right, you may end up hitting a barrier, a tree, you may take a car or two along with you, or even a motorcycle with a pillion, you may end up causing a chain collision. Worst still, you may end up mounting the curb and taking a bystander on the pavement along with you (if it's on small roads). What if you suddenly e-brake? You may cause a horrific rear collision if the car behind you is unable to react in time. What happens then if you hit the animal head on? You end up feeling guilty for killing an animal, you'll end up paying for your broken bumper/fender or other repairs. But hopefully the impact ends there. Importantly what we should do is to maintain a proper following distance, be attentive on the road and react properly on the road. Unless, you are dead sure of the road and traffic condition around you (no cars, no bikes, no pedestrians), don't swerve. Not saying that animals lives ain't important but just saying don't jeopardize the lives of others while trying to save that dog, cat or squirrel. And dog owners, please keep your pets leashed. No use crying if you don't leash your pets and then it ends up a road kill. The only fault of the driver then would be if he hits and then run.
  4. Kudos to the authority to bring the offenders to court. 👍 Serve him right for participating in such inhumane acts. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/man-filmed-cousin-abusing-poodle-fined-torture-15179860 SINGAPORE: A man who filmed his cousin torturing a poodle and did not stop him was fined S$4,500 by a court on Thursday (Jul 8). Chia Yong-Quan, 38, was also banned from owning any animal for a year. He pleaded guilty to one count under the Animals and Birds Act of wantonly omitting to stop his cousin from cruelly torturing his dog. Yong-Quan filmed two videos of this abuse. He not only failed to stop Clement from torturing the dog, but helped to record the process. The offences came to light only three to four years later in July 2020, when six videos of Clement torturing the poodle - including the two clips by Yong-Quan - were shared by many users on Facebook. Many people were alarmed to see the videos and alerted the authorities about the abuse. The prosecutor asked for a fine of between S$4,000 and S$6,000 for Yong-Quan and for a one-year ban from owning any pet, the maximum under the law. Yong-Quan could have been jailed up to 18 months, fined up to S$15,000, or both for wantonly omitting to stop a person cruelly torturing an animal.
  5. Anyone heard or approached a Animal Communicator to communicate with your dog before? I have heard of SG animal rescue groups getting AC to ask missing dogs abt their well being Following comments from a dog fb group a little back story here the reason for asking is my wife has been asking to get an animal communicator for our little dachshund suffering from acute kidney failure about a month plus since onset. countless visits to the vet she is lethargic and breathing heavily most of the time vet says condition is stable but no improvements for her blood test (BUN level) she is home now and we have to learn to administer subcutaneous injection twice a day it is extremely stressful for my dach as well as for us because she refuse to eat her meals and meal times becomes a fight and a struggle. they can be stubborn force feeding takes about 45 mins. that actually means 1 hour of unhappiness for her 2 times a day since the onset of acute renal failure everything has been going down hill for our little girl. we are also truly aware that many fail to recover from renal failure even if its acute and not chronic Wife hope to find out from AC how is our girl feeling, is she still coping, is she tired? is she fighting just because she doesn't want mama and papa to feel sad? we also want her to tell us if she's truly tired please tell mama and papa, we don't want her to be suffering i'm skeptical when it comes to this (AC = psychic? unbelievable) hence don't wish to post on fb (wife can see and don't want to hurt her feelings). this is a car forum but i'm trying my luck here. will be good if anyone has firsthand experience or heard of something like this and let me know if it truly works or just a scam or a "feel good" for ourselves that we've done it right for our fur pals thank you

  7. Yahoo News :Couple caught on video abusing kitten A netizen has captured on video a couple abusing a kitten by dipping it repeatedly in a puddle of dirty water before throwing it around. According to chinaSMACK, the incident happened in Tongzhou district in Beijing, China on 19 July. In the video, a woman who looks to be in her pyjamas with a messy hair bun appears to be squatting beside a puddle of water. Zooming in, the woman is seen holding a kitten's tail, and pulling it back to her when the kitten tries to move away. The woman dips the kitten in the puddle of water head first repeatedly and refuses to let the kitten go. At the 0:57 mark, a man in pink is seen in the video. He participates in the act later by tossing the cat to the woman. Throughout the video, a bigger-sized cat tries to go to the kitten to pick the kitten up but was shooed away by the woman. The entire cat abuse episode lasted for about 30 minutes and it ended when the kitten was thrown into an underground basement by the couple. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vQyK5xKgYY...player_embedded This sick PRC abuser should be recarnated into kitten in their next life........

  9. http://news.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews...122-102614.html BEIJING, Nov 22 (Reuters) - A panda at a zoo in southern China attacked a student who snuck into its pen hoping for a cuddle with the endangered bear, state media said on Saturday. The 20-year-old male student surnamed Liu jumped over the fence at the zoo in the tourist city of Guilin, ignoring warning signs not to, Xinhua news agency said. "The panda, named Yangyang, was wide awake. Apparently scared by the intruder, he bit at Liu's arms and legs," it quoted an unnamed worker as saying after zoo keepers managed to calm the bear and rescue Liu, the report said. "Yangyang was so cute and I just wanted to cuddle him," Liu was quoted as saying from his hospital bed. "I didn't expect he would attack." Scientists believe fewer than 2,000 giant pandas live in the wild in China
  10. Animal abandonment is a crime in some countries but not in Singapore. My sis's car cam captured a video of a lady abandoning a white rabbit along Lor Pasu, this place is full of stray dogs during the night. Apparently, the owner has picked the worst place in Singapore to abandon her rabbit. A irresponsible pet owner. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vw8TQcSdk9g

  15. Tan Kin Lian / Columnist Are we seeing a modern Animal Farm happening in Singapore, where corruption and propaganda are used to control the populace? ANIMAL Farm is a novel written by George Orwell in 1945. I studied this book for Literature when I was in Secondary Two. It is a satire, depicting events in Russia leading up to and during the Stalin era before World War II. The animals of Animal Farm threw out the owner Mr. Jones and took over the farm, depicting the overthrow of the Czar of Russia during the Russian Revolution in 1917. The animals, representing the people, looked forward to a better life under a new leadership. Their leaders were the Pigs, and Napolean was the supreme leader. He ruled Animal Farm initially with the support of the animals, but later kept his power through all means, including propaganda, lies and the use of terror. Two memorable parts of the book were the Seven Commandments and how they became distorted and the story of the loyal horse Boxer. Seven Commandments The original seven commandments of Animal Farm were written to reflect equality of the animals, ethical behaviour and the search for a better life: Whatever goes upon two legs enemy Whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend, No animal shall wear clothes. No animal shall sleep in a bed. No animal shall drink alcohol. No animal shall kill any other animal. All animals are equal. Corruption Later Napoleon and the Pigs (elites) were corrupted by the absolute power they held over the farm. To maintain their popularity with the other animals, they secretly painted additions to some commandments to benefit the pigs while keeping them free of accusation of breaking the laws. The Pigs manage to get away with this because only Benjamin the donkey and Muriel the goat can read to any effective degree, but they were not willing to challenge the pigs. The commandments were changed to accommodate the desire of the leader for a life of luxury and wealth, while ignoring the lot of the other animals. No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets. No animal shall drink alcohol to excess. Four legs good, two legs better! No animal shall kill another animal without cause. All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Boxer I felt strongly attached to the horse Boxer. He was the symbol of the working class: loyal, kind, dedicated and respectful. He was physically the strongest animal on the farm, but na
  16. I sincerely hope this is a hoax. The latest craze in China is selling little plastic key chains with live animals like fishes sealed in them. STOMPer freewilly thinks that this is inhumane and qualifies as animal abuse. The STOMPer says: "These key chains are sold at train stations. "The water in the key chain supposedly contains 'nutrients' that will keep the animals alive for a month or longer. "There's a rumour going around that after the animals die, the carcass is heated up in the microwave for 15 seconds and is enjoyed with an ice cold beer. "These people selling the key chains are not in the right mind."
  17. http://beta.sg.news.yahoo.com/elephant-sex...042319-187.html AHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAA... It had sex with a Passat.. HHAHAHAHAHA ..London, Feb 26 (ANI): An elephant left the passengers of a car with a jumbo-sized problem when he mistook the vehicle for a mate and started having sex. The randy elephant got on with the tusk and went bumper to bumper with the saloon car before tyring of the chase and rolling the vehicle on to its back into the bushes. Irishman John Somer and terrified friend Carina Lowers were driving the Volkswagen Passat through the Pilanesberg Game Reserve in South Africa when they came across the five-ton bull, called Amarula. "I never thought I would be killed by an elephant. When I turned the corner there was another vehicle in the road in front of us. The driver started reversing and stopped next to us. I'm Irish and he was speaking Afrikaans, but I could make out the word 'elephant'," the Sun quoted Somer who lives in nearby Rustenburg, as saying. John was unable to back up out of a ditch so turned the engine off hoping to avoid Amarula's attention. But the elephant came straight for them and began rubbing up against the car. "It really did seem to regard the car as a female elephant and was making advances on 'her'. When the bull started flipping the car over my life literally started flashing before my eyes. "The car landed on its roof and we were lying inside it. Carina was very scared and wanted to crawl out but first I wanted to see where the elephant was. When we saw it was walking away we crawled out through the window," he said. Fellow nature lover Riaan van Wyk managed to catch the incredible scenes on camera. He said: "Amarula is one of the largest bull elephants in the reserve. To make a bad situation worse, he was in musth - a dangerous time where bull elephants become randy, aggressive and pumped full of hormones. "As Amarula made his way closer to the VW Passat I sat quietly in a nearby car. Realising what was about to unfold I nervously grabbed my camera," said Wyk. "Amarula then proceeded to focus his attention on me and only after a 15 minute chase did he finally lose interest and wander off into the bushes," he added. (ANI) ... Lols..

  22. McDonald's takes the charm out of Doraemon series MCDONALD'S started a Doraemon lucky charm series recently with each lucky charm sold at $2 if one orders a set meal. My two-year-old daughter is a Doraemon fan and can sing the song whenever she sees the cartoon cat. Thinking of getting four Doraemon lucky charms representing the Chinese zodiac signs of my family - Tiger, Rabbit, Pig and Ox - I visited the McDonald's outlet in Tampines Mall on Monday. The idea was to display them during Chinese New Year. After I bought the Tiger and Rabbit lucky charms, I scanned the series and realised one animal was missing from the 12 signs - the Pig. Instead, McDonald's had a Cupid Doraemon. I could understand why Cupid was there as the first day of Chinese New Year happens to be Valentine's Day. But why should the Pig be missing from the series since all other 11 animals (even the mythical dragon) are included? Puzzled, I asked the counter staff. The answer surprised me even more: As a halal restaurant, McDonald's could not display or sell Pig soft toys. I understand that we need to respect our Muslim citizens as Singapore is a multiracial and multicultural society. Halal food establishments must meet the criteria set by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) to be certified as such. I also understand why some restaurants do not allow dogs on their premises as it may offend Muslim diners. I have Muslim friends and when I invite them for a meal, I make sure I have a halal food option. If I dine with them, I avoid ordering pork dishes too. However, in this case, the Pig is one of the Chinese zodiac signs - part of Chinese culture and customs - and it is just a soft toy, not food. Will the sight of a Doraemon collectible Pig soft toy offend anyone? Was the decision based on a recommendation from Muis? I have given up collecting the lucky charms because my girl was born in the Year of the Pig and she has no 'luck' in getting her Doraemon charm. Pauline Koh (Ms)

  24. 20th Jul 09, was driving from PIE to CTE AMK, saw a white cat lying motionless in a pool of blood, it is in the middle of two lanes, along the white striped lines...was a really a sad scene when i saw it, dunno how long it was there.. and tonight, i saw another animal, not sure if it is a cat because it was dark, lying motionless in a pool of blood at SLE Lentor Exit, this time round, saw a red honda stream i think, stopped a few metres in front, at the traffic light with the hazard lights on, the driver and his passenger came down the car as i drove past them.. i'm not sure if they are the culprit, but i hope if they are going to look at the animal, hope that it could still be saved.. haiz..it makes me wonder, what will fellow drivers do when: an animal dash out of the road during an expressway exit or just on normal road? Jam brake? but what if there are cars behind you? p.s mod, if i have post this in the wrong section, please kindly move it, thanks.
