PSA Peugeot Citroen gets temporary approval for bailout by European Union

Ailing PSA Peugeot Citroen Group has just been granted temporary approval by the European Union for 1.2 billion euros (S$1.9 billion) of French-backed bonds. As part of the deal to obtain final approval, PSA will have to submit a restructuring plan within the next six months to show how the group and its bank unit (Banque PSA Finance) intend to return to profitability without state help. "Now one needs to know what the commission will ask in terms of restructuring for the group and this remains unclear," said Pierre Bergeron, a credit analyst at Societe Generale in Paris. The temporary approval will allow the bank to pay back this year's maturities of 500 and 750 million euros in July and September respectively. In early 2012, PSA Group and General Motors announced the creation of a global strategic alliance to co-develop engines and a global purchasing joint venture for the sourcing of components and other goods and services. The alliance is expected to contribute to cost savings for both car manufacturers. -
GM Vice Chairman Stephen Grisky says that Opel is not for sale. "Opel is not for sale. GM fully stands behind Opel," said Mr Girsky in a statement recently. "Opel is a fully integrated part of GM's global footprint and vital for GM's future success in Europe. The GM-PSA alliance is fully on track." The statement comes after an Italian newspaper implied Fiat was ready to buy the loss-making brand should the alliance between GM and PSA/Peugeot Citroen fail. The publication reported that Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne is already preparing a proposal to acquire the European brand in the event that GM decides to pull out of the alliance. The first time Fiat was trying to buy over Opel was in 2009 when the company was briefly in the red. Car makers are currently going through a deplorable phase as they struggle to control increasing losses in Europe after 11 consecutive months of declining sales. GM is one of the companies that were badly hit as it lost almost US$16 billion in its European operations over the last 12 years. The GM-PSA alliance allows both the manufacturers to share vehicle platforms, components and modules. In addition, the creation of a global purchasing joint venture enables both entities to enjoy greater economy of scales when sourcing for materials. I believe Opel has a future as it has plans to revamp its engine line up over the next 12 months. The new 1.6-litre SIDI (spark ignition direct injection) ECOTEC engine has been introduced recently and production will start in late 2012. Opel, hang in there!

The Alliance Meet 2012. Nothing's Wrong, Everything's Right. One of the things i've always wanted to see happen to our small local automotive community had finally come to fruition this afternoon. A mega meet of sorts with no barriers to entry, regardless of marque, style or purpose. A spot would be reserved for you as long as you had the drive to participate. While most of the cars present were of the JDM variety, a strong showing of VWs, MINIs and a handful of BMWs kept the Euro flame alive. Perhaps if another meet happens again in the future, we should put together a BMW.SG crew? Enough from me now, let's dive straight into the pics! As mentioned above, here's the bevy of MINIs from the local MINI enthusiast group, MINImob. ...and THAT's how they roll! This stunning 1st generation Exige came decked out with a full-on CF body. It had a mighty potent powerplant inside as well. There were a couple of other Elises and Exiges running around. Insert "Initial-D" comment here. There were a few Audis present as well, not many from the 3-pointed star but i think this AMG makes up for the numbers. Some cars were less "showy", but this definitely looked more purposeful then any showcar. An interesting Thai plate on this Euro R.

When the Japanese and Germans joined forces in World War II some 70 years ago, they created a lot of hardship for mankind. Now, they have come together again but this time, for a good cause. Toyota and BMW announced that they have reached an agreement to jointly research and develop the next generation lithium-ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. Such tie-ups are not new though. In 2010, Renault-Nissan-Daimler signed a three-way alliance to boost economies of scale and share high upfront development costs in new areas such as hybrid electric engines. Details are scare at the moment but it is understood that engineers from both companies will look for ways to increase the performance and capacity of lithium-ion batteries through the use of new materials for cathodes, anodes and electrolytes. It would be interesting to see what these two brands come up with eventually in terms of electric and hybrid technologies. As part of the agreement, BMW will supply Toyota with diesel engines of 1.6L and 2.0L capacity for sale in Europe starting in 2014. This shows a change of heart for Toyota, who originally wanted to continue pushing hybrids in Europe, but has realized that the market still prefers diesel-powered vehicles. Ironically, Toyota supplied BMW with 1.6L diesel powerplants for their MINI products between 2002 and 2005. -

The partnership between Germany and Japan did not succeed during the World War II. However, they are rumored to come together again and this time, to bring fun instead of destruction to the world. A new report is indicating that Mazda and Audi are considering a partnership to develop a Wankel engine. Inside Line, a free online car magazine, says the two companies have had informal talks to explore the possibility of joining forces to develop rotary engines. Audi recently unveiled the A1 hatchback-based e-tron concept, which features a 254cc Wankel range-extender located beneath the trunk floor. There are now less than 100 engineers working on the existing Renesis engine, says a senior insider at Mazda. However, a newly developed laser ignition system promises a big step forward. Laser ignition does away with the need for spark plugs, making it easier to seal the Wankel's trochoidal combustion chamber for improved efficiency and reduced hydrocarbon emissions. If a funding source is found, the mid-term aim is to develop a new rotary sports car capable of producing just 130g of CO2 per km compared to the polluting 299g/km of the current RX-8. Contributing to this huge improvement are micro-hybrid technology, auto stop/start function, usage of lightweight materials etc.

At a news conference in Brussels, Belgium, Daimler AG and the Renault-Nissan alliance officially announced that the three automakers would collaborate on future products and that each would exchange shares in the other companies. The deal has been rumored for months, and Daimler has been looking for a partner to help spread the costs of small car development for years. Under the new agreement, Daimler will hold a 3.1-percent stake in Renault and Nissan and the existing alliance partners will hold an identical stake in the German company. The partners will develop a combined platform that will be used as the basis for the next generations of the Renault Twingo and Smart cars, including a new four-seater. These new models will be launched in 2013 and the current Smart factory in France will continue building the two-seat version. The new four-seater, along with the Twingo, will be built at a Renault factory in Slovenia. All three vehicles will be available from launch in gas, diesel and electric drive variants. The automakers will also share powertrains for the other models. Renault-Nissan will provide small gas and diesel engines to Daimler for use in its smaller cars, including presumably the next generation A, B and perhaps even C-Class Mercedes-Benz models. Going the other way, Daimler will provide some of its engines to Nissan for use in Infiniti models. The partners will also collaborate on light commercial vehicles, with Renault providing a new entry-level van to be sold as a Mercedes. Sharing of components and technology among automakers could be the way moving forward to reduce production cost. However, this may lead to a lack of product variety eventually.

Hi guys, Need to ask some questions. I'm on Krisflyer membership. Usually I redeem only on SQ flights. It's only recently I went to the star alliance website and found that you can actually redeem other airlines' tickets using your KF points. I have a few questions: 1) Can it be cheaper to redeem other airlines using the KF points? 2) Any disadvantages / advantages? 3) How do we do it? Via Star Alliance office in SG? 4) What is round the world ticket? Can really fly and stop over to every where in 1 go? Basically I'm thinking of maximise how I use the KF points. Currently if I book online I get a 15% discount which is quite ok but the discount is also reversed if you need to change your return ticket if your departure ticket is consumed. Thinking of going to places like China. For 5hr flight, thinking of going business class with my wife?
