Independent safety organisation says knee airbags not really useful

Do knee airbags provide any safety benefits to the drivers and front-seat passengers? Not really, says America's Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). According to the safety organisation, it compiled crash reports for more than 400 frontal accidents across 14 states in the U.S.A and compared the injury risk in vehicles with knee airbags to vehicles without them. They then concluded that “Knee airbags had only a small effect on injury measures recorded by dummies in IIHS driver-side small overlap front and moderate overlap front crash tests. In the small overlap test, knee airbags were associated with increased injury risk for lower leg injuries and right femur injuries, though head injury risk was slightly reduced. The airbags had no effect on injury measures in the moderate overlap test.” Adding on, it stated that knee airbags only reduced the overall risk injury from 7.9% to 7.4%, a not very significant improvement statistically wise. That said, it is possible knee airbags would be more effective in preventing injuries of those not using seat belts, but the IIHS study did not go into this area of research. -
I advocate Taxi/PHV should be regulated to have equipped with a minimum in-car safety standard. To me, it is their very basic social responsibility to make sure the car is as safe as possible. As public transport, shouldn't they have responsibility to the safety for their passengers? Everytime a taxi/PHV involved in an accident, the driver is the only one responsible. Shouldn't the Taxi/PHV rental companies have responsibility? Full spec SRS is the most basic one. Why they are not equipped with full SRS specs? Are they really not affordable with Singapore standard of living? Most passengers sit at the back seat. Curtain airbags could have saved life and avoid serious injuries, including the Commonwealth Avenue West accident at 19 Apr 2018, should the taxi was equipped with curtain airbag. (To the victim family, Sorry to bring up this painful lost. My thought is with the young lady. My intention is to do something to prevent similar incident in future.)

"The NHTSA recently released a warning about getting your airbags replaced at a repair shop that doesn't sell for new cars - the replacements might be Chinese-made airbags that either don't inflate, or explode in your face." So....Don't look for cheap stuff for something really important.

Out of curiosity, has anyone been in an accident where the airbags deployed? How serious was the impact to cause airbag deployment and how does an airbag feel like?

A new range of adaptive airbags will be featured on the new Ford Focus. The driver's front airbag features a reconfigured curve-shaped tether system that pulls in the lower section to create a pocket to help lessen the impact of the airbag on the driver's chest and ribs in frontal crashes. In addition, the passenger front airbag has a pyrotechnically-operated adaptative venting system which reduces airbag pressure when it has been sufficiently inflated to protect the occupant. Likewise, the side airbags also have a venting system but their design ditches the pyrotechnic charge for traditional vents. Mounted at shoulder level, the vents allow less pressure to be exerted on smaller passengers. According to Sue Cischke, Ford's group vice president of Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering, "This is our most advanced airbag system ever in a Ford car, and is designed to enhance protection for front occupants in the most common types of crashes. Each of these airbags uses innovative technologies to help customize airbag protection to the occupant."

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating the 2005 and 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for a wiring harness issue that could prevent the airbags from deploying in a collision. There are about 100,000 vehicles that could be affected if a recall notice is issued, and NHTSA says that it's received four complains of failures of the wiring harness, though there have been no reported injuries as a result of the issue. Mercedes spokesman Robert Moran reportedly told Bloomberg that the condition presents itself when drivers telescope the steering wheel all the way out and and as high as it can go. Under those conditions the potentially defective harness could pull out of the connector block, causing an open-circuit condition in the driver's airbag circuits. If the harness disconnects from the connector, the air bag warning lamp will illuminate and one of two diagnostic fault codes will point to the problem. The German automaker sent out a TSB back in December 2005 to address the issue, which is fixed with what NHTSA calls a "substantially longer" wiring harness. The TSBs, which have been updated over time, covers MY 2003-2009 E-Class and the MY 2006-2010 CLS, though only the 2005 and 2006 E-Class is currently being investigated. Saw this video and I though the V40 is a very very safe designed car but how come no airbags deployed during roll? http://carscoop.blogspot.com/2008/06/video...t-in-volvo.html Howevery after the roll, I am extremely impressed that the car is still pretty good in shape... well done Volvo

Dear all, 1. Do you guys feel that Airbags and ABS are basic industrial safety features for our cars? 2. What do you think of car distributors that sell low cost cars by removing Airbags and ABS? Are they doing more harm to the brand or they're out to earn a greater margin from us? Regards,
