The sight of an old man in Chinatown shivering while trying to sleep moved Mr Francis Ng to action last week. Since last Thursday (Jan 4), the restaurant owner has been giving out blankets to those sleeping on the streets, mainly in mature estates such as Tiong Bahru, Redhill and Toa Payoh. He estimated that he has given out more than 100 blankets so far. They cost around $10 per piece. In the early hours of a rainy Saturday morning (Jan 13), The Straits Times followed Mr Ng, 44, on his solo mission to do good. In about an hour, he delivered nine blankets in Chinatown to mostly elderly men. Some of them lie on benches and reclining chairs, while make do with a piece of cardboard on the ground. The heartwarming act came amid the cool spell in recent days.

The Singapore Navy said in a statement on Facebook today (June 15) that it sent a vessel to help the tanker. The RSS Gallant was the first vessel to arrive at the scene before it was joined by its Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts. The public transport operator had failed to seek the necessary approval from the authorities, an LTA spokesperson said in response to media queries. Under its licence to operate the Circle Line, SMRT must obtain approval if it wishes to provide train services that are not open to the public. “In this case, SMRT did not seek our approval before agreeing to provide the service. We are looking into the appropriate action to take. We have also reminded SMRT that its primary focus must be to ensure good service delivery to the commuting public at large,” the LTA spokesperson said. TODAY understands that for all MRT lines, approval from the authorities is required if a public transport operator wishes to offer services beyond its core business of providing train services to the public. When contacted, SMRT did not say if it knew that it had to seek approval. It had previously worked with schools in chartering trains to transport students for large-scale events over the years, including for the National Education Shows during National Day Parade rehearsals. Requests are reviewed on a case-by case basis and generally, the schools should be within walking distance to stations and the destination needs to be on the same train line. SMRT also stressed that no passenger services were affected and train intervals were maintained at “normal service levels at all times”. Chartered trains are injected in between normal train services and run only within off-peak hours. It added that only one-way services were provided to ACS (I), as the return journey would have taken place during peak hours. It is understood that the chartered trains would not have been in service during off-peak hours. ACS (I) had chartered the trains to transport 3,000 of its students and staff to the rugby match, which was the first school final to be held at the new National Stadium at the Sports Hub. The move provoked a flurry of both dismay and support from the public, with some questioning whether some schools were getting special treatment and whether SMRT could have put the additional trains to better use for the public. Others felt it was an efficient way of transporting students without affecting road traffic. ACS (I) principal Winston Hodge had told The Straits Times that it would have taken at least 80 buses to transport its staff and students, and the trains were a “cost-efficient” way of getting them to the Sports Hub. Neither the school nor SMRT revealed the cost, but it reportedly came to S$2 a head. The students were to travel directly from one-north station to Stadium station on the Circle Line. A People's Action Party MP called on his organisation to consider legal action yesterday after "vicious" edits were made to its Wikipedia page. Tampines GRC MP Baey Yam Keng spoke out after a user of the website changed the name of the party to "Party Against People" and added lines such as "down with the fascists" and "vote for Opposition" into the text. According to the page's publicly available editing history, the user who first made the changes appeared to have done so on Wednesday afternoon under the name "AlikVesilev". Bottomline is PAP Town councils SOLD their computer system for $140000 to aim and promised to Pay Aim a Monthly Fee of $785 per town council to use their software. There are so many red flags that I am really worried for Singapore 1) There is only ONE BIDDER in the entire tender, Quote from CNA "Dr Teo said although five companies collected the tender agreement, the sole bid was submitted by AIM, a company fully owned by the P A P. " 2) sold for $140 000? what are they smoking? how much did they spend to develop that software? My brother has a startup that makes encryption software for cloud computing and I tell you, $140k is not going last very long. 3) $785 monthly fee per TC? with 14 PAP TCs that works out to $131880 a year! Sold their software for $140k and lease it back at $132k a year??? This is totally ridiculous. 4) How many Employees does Aim has? What is their contact number? They don't even have an address. Did they do ANYTHING at all? This is really bad... if PAP does not get to the bottom of this....

The Competition Commission of Singapore (CCS) is taking 13 motor vehicle traders to task for anti-competitive actions. In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the Commission accused the traders of contravening the Competition Act. The group was said to have engaged in an anti-competitive agreement to suppress bids at public auctions of motor vehicles. The CCS said that the infringing conduct involved bid-rigging through an agreement to suppress bids at these auctions, which has the "object of preventing, restricting or distorting competition". took public transport to work today because forgot to pump petrol yesterday oh boy the experience was HORRIBLE! - mad rush to enter the train - had to stand all the way for 1hr+ - squeezy over-crowded train - aircon was working but wasn't strong enough to cool the entire cabin - bus took 10 minutes to arrive - seats at the bus stop were dirty - too many people at the bus stop, had to wait under the sun - paid $3 to reach work from home after this experience i finally understand why people are willing to pay above their means to afford and own a car our govt has been taking action to curb private transport all the time but after today's experience, i really think our govt should also start looking into public transport or maybe they are only taking action against private transport because they've never taken public transport themselves!
