  1. For those who have yet to visit the exhibition in person or are maybe overseas and cannot make it down. http://www.nhb.gov.sg/eo/In%20Memoriam%20Lee%20Kuan%20Yew/ http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/memorial-exhibition-for/1866078.html SINGAPORE: A memorial exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore dedicated to the late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew has drawn over 135,000 people since it started on March 25. In Memoriam: Lee Kuan Yew has seen its run extended twice due to popular demand, but the exhibition will close at the end of June. Those who have yet to visit, will be able to do so online. The National Museum has created a virtual interactive tour with a 360 degree view of the items and posters on display. Mr Daniel Tham, curator at the National Museum, said the virtual walk-through recreates the experience of actually being in the museum. "That includes the images that are on display, the caption and text panels and you also get to listen to audio speeches delivered by Mr Lee," he said. As a bonus, those who tour the exhibition online can look inside Mr Lee's famous red box briefcase which he used as to carry speeches, documents and readings. "We took many many still photos of a single spot, we put them together, then we developed it and packaged it," said Mr Alvin Neo, director from Zwaan, which produced the interactive virtual tour. The virtual exhibition is available on the National Museum's website. - CNA/ly

  3. Who do you guys think take MCF most seriously? Get offended sometimes and stands up for his/her rights and never backs down even in the face of a better argument? After all this is the internet and we do have many idiots who come in to stroke flames, especially during school holidays... I also sometimes feel like wacking those morons, that's why my avatar now shows them my intention.
  4. Thu, Feb 11, 2010 Reuters SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc's AAPL.O forthcoming iPad tablet computer will cost as little as US$229.35 (S$325.67) for the company to produce, according to an estimate on Wednesday from research house iSuppli. The group conducted what it called a "virtual teardown" of the iPad, since the device is not yet available and component suppliers have not been announced. Apple's iPad, which resembles a large iPhone and uses the same operating system, will go on sale as early as next month, as the company looks to define a new category of mobile devices. For the US$499 (S$708.58) iPad - the lowest-cost model, which features 16 gigabytes of flash memory - iSuppli estimated the total materials cost at US$219.35 (S$311.47), with a US$10 manufacturing cost. The priciest iPad will cost around US$335 (S$475.70) to produce, while the mid-range model will cost roughly US$287 (S$407.54), the group said. The most expensive component in the iPad is the 9.7-inch display and touchscreen, at an estimated cost of US$80 (S$113.60), according to the estimate. Analysts expect Apple to ship somewhere between 2 million and 5 million iPad units in the first year.
  5. OPC owners can now purchase their permit via the web. I was thinking along the lines of paying for parking in URA/HDB carparks via SMS. Goes something like this: 1. Enter the HDB carpark (non season) 2. Instead of tearing coupons, you sms to xxxxx "Car license plate_Carpark #_0830_1030". 3. The bill comes to you through your monthly telephone bill. That's it. No more paper wastage and littering. Warden can still come and check if your "coupon" has expired with a device which speaks to the main server. Add to that the advantage of being able to top up the "coupon" while you are on the 30th floor in your friend's place and the gathering dragged on longer than expected. No need to spend 15 min going up and down to top up. Just do it in your friend's place via a SMS. LTA has no need to install costly EPS system as well. The technology is already there. Just need to modify. You guys think will work? LTA folks, if you are reading, feedback to your higher mgt. You can claim that this is your original idea and get credit for it. I don't care also as long as we benefit.

  8. The roadmap to the courts By Leong Wee Keat, TODAY | Posted: 24 November 2006 0734 hrs Photos 1 of 1 SINGAPORE: The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has filed a civil suit against Virtual Map - the company behind streetdirectory.com - for copyright infringement. The copyright material in question: Singapore's map data and street information, which the SLA had licensed to Virtual Map, but whose licence the authority terminated in July 2004. The statutory board claimed that after the termination, Virtual Map continued to sell and distribute its maps. It also created new maps, which the SLA alleges are reproductions of the authority's works. The SLA is seeking damages and an injunction to restrain Virtual Map from further infringement of the data. It also wants Virtual Map to disclose the names and addresses of all persons or companies that it has distributed the maps to. Additionally, the SLA is also seeking an order to destroy all documents, materials or images in which copyright breaches have occurred. The suit, filed in October last year, was confirmed on Thursday by an SLA spokesperson. On Wednesday, the SLA launched a website that allows non-commercial users to download maps for free, presenting an alternative to the popular streetdirectory.com. While non-corporate users can download maps from streetdirectory.com for free, Virtual Map imposes charges for commercial entities wanting to do the same. In the past two years, the company has brought suits against five companies here for copyright infringements, after they reproduced Virtual Map's location maps on their websites. All the suits were settled out of court. When asked about the suit brought against it by the SLA, Virtual Map and its lawyer Low Chai Chong declined comment. Under the seven licence agreements it had signed with SLA, Virtual Map claimed that the digitised data received was "raw" and bears "no substantial similarity" to the ones they later produced. The defendant further argued that the maps it created were "original literary and artistic works" and were the product of their own "skill, effort and labour". Virtual Map also argued that under the agreements, it was an implied term that the defendant would be allowed to keep any maps created, and to maintain, market, distribute and sell them. It added that there were also no "express terms" in the licence agreements requiring it to destroy maps that may have contained SLA's original data, upon termination of the agreements. Both parties are set to appear before the Subordinate Courts on Jan 8. - TODAY
