Traumatic experience at library
LAST Saturday, just as my two children and I were leaving the Marine Parade Library, the alarm sounded. We went back in and came out again but the alarm still sounded. There were a few people entering and leaving at the same time.
The security officer asked us, a woman and a boy aged about 11 to go to the counter to have our library materials checked. The counter staff member told us to put all our library materials and loan receipts on the table.
There was nothing wrong with our books, but she found that a CD-ROM that the boy had borrowed was overdue. She berated him and insisted that he pay the fine of $3.50. Surely there was no need for her to be so harsh with him. She also treated the rest of us harshly.
The library should ensure that its staff are trained to handle such a situation. The experience was traumatic for all of us, especially the children.
