This is a discussion at BITOG which I consider the most important as it addresses oil temperature when the oil is at operating temperature. It hinges on this research: Zoz, Steve, et. al., Engine Lubrication Model for Sump Oil Temperature Prediction SAE Paper 2001-01-1073. http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/ultima...ic;f=4;t=000196 In summary, the faster you go (RPM higher) the hotter your engine, the heavier weight of oil you should use. Ambient temperatures contribute 0.3 deg C for every 1 deg C of ambient temperature. So for a car running at its operating temperature of 100 deg C and an ambient temperature of 30 deg C, oil temperature should be 109 deg C. Well, all this is in theory.
