  1. Skoda adds yet more incentive to opt for its excellent Superb with its 1.8 TSI variant, so naturally we take one up North into the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia to test it out. Despite being a more affordable alternative, the Superb Ambition didn't disappoint at all. From the inside at least, the 8.0-inch infotainment system was still intuitive to use, with two physical knobs to control the volume and scroll through menus, while the car remained very compliant and comfortable on the road throughout the 1,400km drive. For sure, features such as ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and a sunroof have been omitted in this variant, but at a good $29,000 discount off the 2.0-litre Laurin & Klement variant (as of 10 September 2019), we think these are features you can live without. The 1.8-litre turbocharged lump is good for 177bhp and 250Nm of torque, meaning there is no stark difference in performance against the 2.0-litre powerplant as well. And that, in our eyes, is good enough reason to consider shopping for the more affordable option. Read our full review here! The following pictures show the car in other specifications. Or perhaps you might be more keen on the facelifted 2020 model?

  3. The 2013 Skoda Octavia RS will be making its debut at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed. But before that, the Czech automaker has released the first official video featuring the RS in sedan and Combi body styles. On the exterior, the Octavia RS has subtle styling cues that distinguish it from the regular model. These include a blackened grille, honeycomb air intake, dual chromed exhaust pipes, red brake calipers and a rear spoiler for the sedan. The new generation Octavia RS is available with either a 2.0-litres TSI petrol engine producing 220 bhp or a 2.0-litres TDI delivering 184 bhp. Both engines are available with a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG dual clutch transmission. The petrol/manual combination sprints from standstill to 100km/h in 6.8 seconds while the TDI/manual version takes 8.1 seconds to do so. Sports Chassis is standard equipment on the RS, which makes the car sit 15mm lower than the standard Octavia. Electronic XDS differential lock is also a standard feature, which is part of the ESC electronic stabilisation programme. The XDS system improves wheel traction and reduces understeering during fast cornering.

  5. Skoda has officially unveiled the top-of-the-range vRS version of the all new Octavia, which is planned for a public debut on 10th July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed held in England. The 2013 Octavia vRS will be available in both sedan and combi body styles. Engine options include the 220bhp 2.0-litre TSI gasoline engine and the 184bhp 2.0-litre TDI. Skoda offers a six-speed DSG transmission as an option for both engines. For the standard six-speed manual version, the petrol vRS does the century sprint in 6.8 seconds while the TDI needs 8.1 seconds. The 2013 Skoda Octavia vRS lineup comes with a sports suspension and sits nearer to the ground. Other goodies include an electronic XDS differential, start/stop function and Brake Energy Regeneration. There is a choice of four alloy rims with sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches. Behind the rims are red brake calipers. The new vRS has a blackened grille, revised front and rear bumpers, chromed dual exhaust pipes, rear spoiler and bi-xenon head lights. On the inside, the sports sedan comes with a leather-stitched sports steering wheel, stainless steel pedals, sport seats and a redesigned instrument panel.
  6. Volkswagen is celebrating a million sales of the Scirocco with the launch of a Scirocco Million Edition. The figure takes into account the sales of the first two generations of Scirocco that were sold between 1974 and 1992. On the outside, the Scirocco Million is painted in exclusive 'Deep Black' metallic paint with two prominent decorative stripes, one on the bonnet and the other on the boot. It also comes with painted wing mirrors and 18-inch 'Interlagos' alloy wheels. The R-Line bodykit completes the exterior updates. The interior is fitted with standard black leather upholstery with contrasting orange stitching that is also found on the gear knob and handbrake. Stainless steel pedals and special Million-badged scuff plates round up the cosmetic upgrades. Under the hood, five engine options are available. The 1.4-litre TSI petrol have outputs of 122bhp or 160bhp while the 2.0-litre TSI produces 210bhp. The 2.0-litre TDI develops 140bhp or 177bhp. The Scirocco Million Edition will go into production in the later part of May 2013 and sadly to say, it will only be offered in China and hometown Germany. First Generation Second Generation
  7. The current generation Skoda Superb was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in early March 2008. A car which has been in production for five years is akin to a man living for five decades and is in dire need to undergo a nip and tuck treatment. The wait is finally over as Skoda has released the official photos of the 2013 Skoda Superb facelift prior to its debut at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show in the second half of April. The revised Superb has a mildly modified front fascia sporting a new grille that looks similar to the recently released all new Octavia. There are some changes to the front bumper and headlamp cover as well. Most of the cosmetic surgery to the back where the taillights are completely revamped and appear to benefit from LED technology. The 2013 Superb also gets a re-shaped boot cover at the back. On the inside, the new Superb gets a new steering wheel and a more elegantly shaped gear stick. In terms of safety, the refreshed Czech saloon has nine airbags, three-point seatbelts, adjustable head restraints and Park Assist as standard. Engine options are expected to be carried over from the pre-facelift model - a range of TSI engines of capacity between 1.4-litre to 2.0-litre and TDI units from 1.6-litre to 2.0-litre displacements.
  8. Volkswagen has released the photos of the 2013 Golf Variant prior to its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show which will open its door in a few days' time. The Golf Variant is essentially an estate version of the popular Golf hatchback. The most practical version of the Golf will be launched alongside with the Golf GTI, GTD, e-Golf and the plug-in hybrid. Engine lineup is expected to be similar to the hatchback, which means 1.2-litre with 85bhp or 105bhp and 1.4-litre with 122bhp or 140bhp for the petrol options. Diesel choices include the 1.6-litre with 104bhp and 2.0-litre with 148bhp. Depending on which part of the world you are residing, the Golf Variant may also be called Golf Wagon, Golf Estate or Jetta SportWagen.
  9. [extract] Volkswagen has launched two limited editions of the MK6 Golf GTI to commemorate the final model year of the hot hatch at the Chicago Auto Show. The GTI Wolfsburg Edition will go on sale in Q1 2013 and only 2000 units will be produced. For the GTI Driver
  10. Images of the 2014 Audi A3 sedan has been captured for the first time during its outdoor testing in Europe. The test car is covered up in black and white body decal but we can still make out the general shape of the car. As a direct competitor to the recently-launched Mercedes CLA, the styling of the production model follows closely to the concept that made its debut nearly two years ago at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The 2013 A3 sedan is expected to measure about 4.44m (L) x 1.84m (B) wide x 1.39m (H). This means Audi
  11. Much has been said about the all-new 2013 Skoda Octavia. However, the Czech carmaker did not reveal the details regarding the engine lineup until now. At launch, the grown-up Skoda sedan will be powered by a slew of four turbocharged petrol and four turbocharged diesel engines. In summary, here's the global engine lineup for the 2013 Octavia: Petrol options - 1.2-litre : 86bhp with 160Nm of torque - 1.2-litre (Greentec) : 105bhp with 175Nm of torque - 1.4-litre (Greentec) : 140bhp with 250Nm of torque - 1.8-litre (Greentec) : 180bhp with 250Nm of torque Diesel options - 1.6-litre : 90bhp with 250Nm of torque - 1.6-litre (Greentec) : 105bhp with 250Nm of torque - 1.6-litre (GreenLine) : 110bhp - 2.0-litre (Greentec) : 150bhp with 320Nm of torque The Greentec label denotes the cars with lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions than the standard Skoda vehicles. They feature technologies such as brake energy recovery and start-stop system. Depending on the engine, the Octavia will be equipped with a five-speed manual, six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG transmission. The top-of-the range vRS variant will be launched at a later date.
  12. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7uXG-QElms Volkswagen has released a new video for the production version of the Golf R Cabriolet ahead of its anticipated international launch in 2013. It looks identical to the concept model previewed 18 months ago at the 2011 Worthersee tuner show. Although the MK 7 Golf has already been launched, the 2013 Golf R Cabriolet is actually based on the MK 6 Golf. Well, perhaps VW has a unique way of production scheduling. The Golf R Cabriolet is equipped with an aggressive body kit that comes with large front air intakes, black grille with R badge, smoked headlights, twin centrally-mounted exhaust pipes and 19-inch Talladega alloy wheels. Propelling the AWD open-top model is the responsibility of the 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged lump with 270bhp and 350Nm of torque. It goes from standstill to 100km/h in 6 seconds and is the fastest and most powerful open-top vehicle in Volkswagen history. Want a quick hairdo from a German 'hairdresser'? The Golf R Cabriolet could be your choice.
  13. After showing bits and pieces of the 2013 Skoda Octavia, the Czech automaker has finally revealed the new sedan in one piece. Anyone familiar with new Skoda Rapid will instantly recognise the new model as a skoda even with the logo covered. It is 90mm longer and 45mm wider than its predecessor and rides on a wheelbase that is 108mm longer. The MK3 Skoda has an evolutionary design whose side profile reminds me of the B5.5 Passat while the tail light design resembles those of the C6 Audi A6. Although the design elements are not new, the whole package comes across as a solidly put-together sedan that would do the VW Group proud. The interior has a redesigned three-spoke steering wheel together with a new gear stick. Panorama glass roof is available on the option list. The Octavia also has the best-in-class cargo capacity of 590 liters. Nine engines will be offered on the new Octavia but Skoda only confirmed two of them at the moment. They are the 1.8-litre TSI with 179bhp and the 1.6-litre TDI with 110bhp. All engines will be mated to a DSG transmission.
  14. Skoda has released a set of new teaser images for its 2013 Octavia sedan. These images highlight the design of its grille, side mirror, C-pillar and LED tail light assembly. The only interior shot reveals the existence of steering-mounted paddle shifter, voice command buttons and a large infotainment screen. Skoda has indicated that the new Octavia will move upmarket with higher quality interior as the newly introduced Rapid will take over the segment currently occupied by the MK2 Octavia. The new generation Octavia will also gain in physical dimension to take on the big boys in the medium sized class such as the Camry and Accord. The Czech automaker is expected to unveil the new Skoda Octavia at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March. The new model is based on the same MQB platform as the Volkswagen Golf Mk7 and is expected to inherit a range of TSI four-cylinder petrol and TDI engines from it.

  16. [extract] After releasing the Rapid sedan, Skoda is readying the next generation Octavia sedan. The current version has been in the market for eight years and the upcoming MK3 Octavia is said to be larger and positioned more upmarket. 17. After all the anticipation, Volkswagen has lifted the curtain off the MK 7 Golf at the New National Gallery in Berlin, Germany. The exterior design is sharper and clearly an evolution of the MK 6. The vital new model for Volkswagen measures 4,255mm long, 2,637mm wide and 1,452mm tall, making the car bigger than the outgoing model in all 3 dimensions. The car rides on the new MQB platform which helps it to weigh up to 100 kg less than its predecessor. The 2013 Golf will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show. At launch, a series of petrol and diesel engines are available. The base gasoline model is equipped with a 1.2-litre TSI unit generating 84bbhp, followed by a 1.4-litre TSI with cylinder deactivation technology that churns out 138bhp. It looks the 1.4-litre
  18. [extract] The 1.4-litre TSI variant of the VW Passat has finally arrived in Singapore although it has been available in Europe for some time now. The new 1.4-litre Passat now takes over as the base model of the range from the 1.8-litre. It epitomizes the rising

Volkswagen will debut cylinder deactivation (cylinder shut-off) technology in the new 1.4-liter TSI turbocharged, direct-injection engine beginning in 2012. Volkswagen will be the first carmaker to implement this technology in a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in large-scale production. The primary goal of the system is to reduce significantly fuel consumption by temporarily shutting off two of the four cylinders (cylinders 2 and 3) during low to mid loads, effectively making it similar to the Fiat 500 TwinAir 2 cylinder engine. Volkswagen says that cylinder shut-off reduces fuel consumption of the 1.4 TSI by 0.4 liter per 100 km in the NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) driving cycle. When the Stop/Start functionality is integrated, which deactivates the engine in neutral gear, the savings effect adds up to about 0.6 liter per 100 km. The greatest benefits of the technology are realized while driving at constant moderate speeds. At 50 km/h, in third or fourth gear, savings amount to nearly one liter per 100 km. Even when running on two cylinders, the 1.4 TSI
  20. The GTI version of the next generation Volkswagen Golf will receive a more powerful iteration of the existing 2.0L turbocharged engine. To achieve 220hp, there were detailed modifications made to the EA888 engine, including a new valve lift system developed by Audi. Volkswagen is also working on an electronically controlled, mechanically locking differentials for GTI and R models. This guarantees that the drive is still directed to the tire with most grip when accelerating. Apart from the hot GTI, VW also plans for the next Golf to undertake significant engineering revisions to the 1.4-litre
  21. The first official images of the all new Audi A7 Sportback are making the internet rounds today ahead of the sport saloon's debut on Monday. These photos prove that the production car has stayed remarkably true to the 2009 Detroit Show concept's appearance. In a similar fashion, the styling of the interior is almost identical to the concept, except for the colors and the decorative trim. The just-under 5-meters long A7 Sportback will be strictly for four passengers. Mechanically, the A5 Sportback's big brother is heavily based on the next generation A6 and will be offered with both diesel and gasoline V6 engines including the new 3.0-liter TSI unit with some 290-horsepower. It goes without saying that the A7 Sportback will be available with Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system and S-tronic dual clutch transmissions. Expect to see performance-oriented S7 and RS7 variants, as well as a hybrid model being added to the range within the next year or so. The A7 Sportback will slot between the A6 and A8 executive saloons with its main competitors being the new Mercedes-Benz CLS and the production version of the BMW Gran Coupe.
  22. This is Volkswagen's facelifted Caddy compact van that enters the 2011 model year with six new TDI diesel and TSI petrol engines. The exterior facelift includes a completely redesigned front end that draws inspiration from the latest Volkswagen models and re-trimmed tail lamps at the back. Inside, there's a new steering wheel design, a revised instrument cluster and higher-grade materials. For the first time, the second row of seats can be completely removed on all models. This allows for a maximum cargo capacity of 3,030 liters on the 5-seater Caddy, up to 3,880 liters on the Caddy Maxi. On the safety aspect, a new Electronic Stability Program and daytime running lights will be standard across the range. Those opting for a diesel have a choice of four engines with 75HP, 102HP, 110HP or 140HP. The 102HP and 140HP TDIs can be hooked up to an optional DSG dual clutch transmission, while the 110HP TDI is exclusively available as a 4MOTION model with four-wheel drive. On the petrol front, the redesigned Caddy's lineup includes a new range of 1.2-liter TSI four-cylinder turbo engine with 86HP or 105HP. The most powerful version returns a combined fuel economy of 6.6lt/100km.

    Here comes the Yeti!

Don't worry, the mythological creature from the Himalayan region is not making an appearance in Singapore. Rather, the Yei is Skoda's first off-roader, combining the strength of a 4x4 with the practicality of a family hatchback. At 4.2 metres, the Yeti is virtually the same length as the Roomster MPV. It
  24. The Volkswagen Passat EcoFuel has recently edged out the Toyota Prius for the title of "greenest car in Europe." The International Automobile Federation (FIA) sanctioned the Eco Test that evaluated a number of cars. The winning Passat is powered by a 1.4-liter TSI inline-four fueled by natural gas. VW's TSI engines are turbocharged and direct injected. Both the Passat and Prius scored 92 out of 100 on the test, but the less expensive natural gas fuel system gave the VW the edge. The test evaluated emissions of CO2, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. The EcoFuel TSI engines are available in many of VW's European models including the Golf, Touran and others. With the result of such a test, I wonder if hybrid cars are relevant going forward. They are more expensive and complex to build than a normal car of similar dimensions and engine output. Its resale value could be a question too as I believe that most used car buyers are more comfortable with a 'proper' petrol driven vehicle in terms of reliability. Once again, congratulations to VW!
  25. Just as Volkswagen released a revised DSG equipped Jetta 1.6 in Singapore, news of an all new 2011 Jetta has been floating around on the internet. The above video shows the development of VW's next generation bread-and-butter model in Death Valley, California. The camouflaged prototype model seen in the spy video suggests that the new Jetta will boast all-new sheetmetal with a pinch of Audi A4 styling cues in the profile and rear-end. From the video, I observed that the new model has a more muscular side profile as compared to the existing model. Nice!. However, the dashboard of the prototype looks rather conservative. I hope that the dashboard will look better in actual production. Underneath the skin, the German firm's new compact-size sedan will most likely share bits and pieces from the Golf VI. In the States, the 2011 Jetta will be offered with VW's latest 2.0 TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines. In other parts of the world, power for the new Jetta will come from VW's lively yet fuel efficient 1.4-liter TSI four-cylinder petrol with outputs ranging from 122HP to 170HP. I would expect the excellent 7 Speed DSG gearbox to be carried over from the current model as well. Its rumored that VW's Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla challenger could make its auto show debut as early as this month's gathering in Detroit, but this has yet to be confirmed by Volkswagen. Although the current Jetta is set to go into the history book soon, VW still gave it a minor interior upgrade, which sports the Mark 6 Golf's steering wheel and instrumental dials layout. This is truly the spirit of continual improvement.
