SINGAPORE: Joseph Schooling on Wednesday (Mar 1) announced his withdrawal from the upcoming Southeast Asian Games, saying he was "not at the level" at which he expects to compete at the event. "After careful consideration with my team, I have decided to pull out of the SEA Games," the 27-year-old swimmer said in a statement. "This was not an easy decision, but I am currently not at the level at which I hold myself to perform. Ultimately, my country comes first before individual accolades." The Olympic champion added that he would instead focus on his National Service duties and support his team-mates from home. "I have decided to give my spot to team-mates who have been getting themselves ready and considered for selection while I cheer from home and focus on my Navy duties," he said. The 2023 SEA Games will take place from May 5 to May 17 in Cambodia. In 2021, he relinquished his Olympic crown in Tokyo, after failing to make the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly event which he won in 2016. Just months later, he had to cope with the death of his father Colin. In 2022, after enlisting and then taking part in the SEA Games in Vietnam, Schooling confessed to consuming cannabis overseas. As a result of his admission, he received a formal letter of warning from the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and lost his disruption privileges. Sport Singapore also suspended support for him for a month, and he was fined for breaching rules in the Singapore National Olympic Council's code of conduct. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/sport/joseph-schooling-withdraws-sea-games-2023-cambodia-swimming-3314991

Great news for athletes! And well done to FINA for having taken what's in my own opionion, a difficult but absolutely necessary stand. I've always had the opinion that transgender women athletes have an advantage over their cisgender counterparts. Our bodies are made differently – males have more upper body strength and muscle mass than females. They've paved the way for perhaps the rest of the sporting world to "do the right thing" to protect the "natural world". And I don't think anyone should be called transphobic for saying I respect the gender in which you choose to identify in, but I disagree with the category you're swimming or competing in. This runs parallel with allowing transgender and women who have gone under the knives to compete in beauty pageants with natural women. If we disallow performance enhancing drugs to be used in a sporting event, then what about altering one's natural features and coming out tops in a beauty pageant? How fast are male swimmers relative to females? In summary, the comparative times/speeds are: 50m freestyle: men are 11.7% faster than the women with women completing 89.4% of their swim when the men finish 800m freestyle: men are 8.4% faster than the women with women completing 92.2% of their swim when the men finish 2008 Olympic 10 km: men were 6.8% faster than the women with women completing 93.6% of their swim when the men finish 2012 Olympic 10 km: men were 6.9% faster than the women with women completing 93.6% of their swim when the men finish 2013 world championship 25 km: men are about 6.9% faster than women with women completing 93.5% of their swim when the men finish 1 km ice swim: men are about 12.3% faster than women with women completing 89.0% of their swim when the men finish Read the article here.

Hi guys, any personal recommendation for swimming coach? I stay in the North. My P2 girl has been to 2 different swim schools, and she's basically been learning for almost 2 years but progress is very slow. Her swimming form is still not really there. And she's hardly improving at all. She's not an easy person to coach sometimes, though her attitude has improved as she's gotten older. Want to make sure she doesn't need to go the swimming programme at P4. My son just started this year and is also slower progress also. But he's 5, so not in a rush.

This kind of parent... really?!?! https://mothership.sg/2018/12/swimming-mother-single/ There are instances where you really got to wonder to what extent someone owes you something. The answer is of course, nothing really, but it’s nice if they help out. Here is the antithesis to that statement. A Singapore-based Facebook user going by the name Matchy Matchy uploaded a lengthy screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation. –– ADVERTISEMENT –– It’s a bit small so we’ve written the transcript of the exchange for you later in the article. Matchy’s post has been shared over 3,000 times. The entire exchange was originally uploaded on Reddit by Reddit user u/pretent_its_witty, who claims to be a swimming instructor from Southern India. The original post on the subreddit, Choosing Beggars, has garnered 100,000 upvotes. The conversation captured in the WhatsApp screenshot posted took place purportedly between a swimming instructor (not a professional one mind you, just someone who does it for free on days that she is swimming as well) and an aunty, who as you will see later, claims to be a single mother, and seems strangely insistent that her son gets to swim “today”. Now take note, this person was apparently volunteering to teach kids swimming for free. Here’s the transcript Auntie (A): Hello, you are the lady who teaches swimming right? I got your number from Sangeetha, can you teach my son also? Swimming instructor (SI): yes sure A: she said she offered to pay but it’s free. Is that true? I can’t pay. I am single mom. (time 10.41am) A: Hello? (10.57am) Please reply (11.05am) ?? (11.20am) Hello? Ter? (11.20am) SI: Hey. Yes they are free. I am in office. I won’t be able to respond right away. A: Wow. That’s rude. I want to know what time today should I bring my son to the pool. SI: I am sorry but today I already informed everyone that I wanted to swim alone today. I will message you the next time I am teaching Probably after 3 days. I usually teach the kids from 3-5 pm. A: Can you come at 1 today and teach him? 1-3 is more warm than 3-5, I know you have flexible timing (12.01) A: Can you reply faster? (12.05) SI: I can’t teach at 1 because of work. It is already past 12. And today, I really feel stressed and I need to blow off some steam. I don’t want to teach today I already told everyone that. From next time, I will inform you also. A: That’s not fair. I already told him that he can go swimming today . Give me one good reason to tell him. Else he is gonna cry. SI: 1. I am not teaching today. 2. AI already cancelled. I can’t un-cancel with everyone this late. A: That’s even better. You can teach him alone. Those brats got free classes for a month. You need to make up for that with my son. SI: What? I can’t teach just for your son. A: Why not? He has anxiety issues. You have to teach him alone. SI: I am not a certified trainer. I don’t want to be responsible for the safety of a kid with anxiety in a pool with depth twice his size. I think you should get someone else. A: When I say anxiety, I’ll don’t mean like that. He just doesn’t like other kids. Just teach him exclusively for one month. After that, you can put him with everyone. They got more classes than him. It is not fair. So you start teaching him from tomorrow at 1. It is better to be out of the pool by 3 That way no one gets sick. Also, he doesn’t have a goggle. Bring him a extra pair tomorrow or let him use yours until I buy one. SI: I can’t swim daily. If I go swimming today. It will be at least 2 days before I swim again. And I am not gonna teach anyone exclusively. A: Wow You are such a selfish b*tch. He is just a kid. Don’t you have any heart. I am a single mom. And I already told him. So… Tomorrow at 1? I can see that you have seen my messages. I will throw him in the pool tomorrow at 1. If something happens to him, you are responsible. Whatever, you are probably a lousy teacher. You are such a nasty horrible person. My son doesn’t this. I don’t know what I did to deserve this. Why is everyone so selfish and unhelpful these days. You have flexible timings, you work less hours than me, You earn more than me Those bi*ches are rich enough they can afford to get a swimming instructor but no. They want only free stuff that my son needs. You are so privileged that you don’t need money you f*king refuse money that people are ready to pay. They are ready to give money and you don’t need money. Do you know how much I need that money? I am a single mom, you should get the money from them and give it to me. You are privileged. You should give it to me. I need it more than you. If you won’t teach my son alone you should at least give money to me. Reply me, I can see that you read the message bi*ch

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/olympic-champion-joseph-schooling-launches-swim-school-10476812 Schooling launches own swim school in Tampines Hub called Swim Schooling but he is not going to be a full time swim teacher there. Students will be taught by the trained coaches employed by the school, which makes it same same as other swimming schs I presume? Ever since the Olympics ended he has been so busy with being a superstar and now even his own sch. How many of you will send your child to his sch in hopes of grooming the next Olympics Champ of the future? Nevertheless best of luck in the Asian Games Joseph Schooling!

Congrats to Schooling!! INCHEON: Swimmer Joseph Schooling won Singapore's first gold at the Asian Games in the 100m Butterfly finals in a Games record time of 51.76 seconds, edging out China's Li Zhu Hao who ended up with silver. This is Singapore's first men's swimming gold since 1982. The 19-year-old came in second at the turn behind Li, however the Chinese swimmer ran out of steam. Japan's Hirofumi Ikebata took bronze.

A taxi took a dive into a swimming pool at a condominium when it took a wrong turn in the heavy rain early Sunday morning. The ComfortDelgro taxi apparently plunged into the pool at about 3am. ComfortDelgro spokesperson Tammy Tan said the driver had gone to the condominium along Upper Bukit Timah Road to fulfil a booking job. As it was raining heavily, the driver could not see clearly and made a wrong turn. He thought it was to the road leading to the lobby. The 44-year-old driver managed to escape unhurt before police arrived on the scene. The vehicle was fished out after 7am. Ms Tan said, "We are relieved to learn that our cabby had escaped unhurt and we will assist him the best we can. We will also be in touch with the condominium with regards to any damage that may have resulted." Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/taxi-dives-into-condo/881512.html

I feel abit violated liao. Used to swim there after my occasional JB trips. Any bros swim @ Woodlands Swimming Pool? http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singaporeseen/this-urban-jungle/what-are-these-weird-holes-doing-in-cubicles-of-the-mens-toilet-at-woodlands What are these weird holes doing in cubicles of the men's toilet at Woodlands Swimming Complex? A regular swimmer was worried when he spotted holes on the walls of the cubicles of Woodlands Swimming Complex, which looked like they have been drilled in by someone. After a swim session just last Saturday (Jul 12), Stomper Richard noticed a hole on the wall of the showering cubicles of the men's toilet . Upon closer look, he realised three of the cubicles had the same hole and that one could peek through them. He wrote: "I am a regular swimmer in Woodlands Swimming Complex and my son also attends swimming lessons regularly in the same pool. There are times he will attend the lessons by himself because we are staying opposite the swimming complex. "When I was showering in one of the cubicles at the male changing room that is furthest from the exit, I noticed some greyish spots on the cubicle wall. "I took a closer look and realised it is a small hole that one could peek through to the adjacent cubicle. The greyish spots looks like cement that had been used to cover the hole but was dug out again. "The location of the peek hole is purposely positioned at the crotch level and one can only imagine the "uses" for this hole. "I checked the walls of other cubicles and was shocked to discover the other cubicles walls all had similar peek holes. "As a father, how can I let my primary school age son use the shower facilities in the men's toilet with a peace of mind when there are potential sick perverts peeking at their private parts? Our children's modesty is at stake."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2syDDenK6g A female body was believed to have been found by the side of a pool in a bungalow just off Coronation Road on Wednesday. Several police officers, including crime scene investigators, were seen canvassing the neighbourhood and collecting evidence at the house located along Victoria Park Road when The Straits Times arrived at the scene earlier. A large blue police tent had been used to cover the woman's body, which was lying on the wooden deck by the side of the swimming pool in the upscale bungalow. No details were available as to what caused the death of the woman, but The Straits Times understands that the case has been classified as an "unnatural death" and investigations are still ongoing. if you drink, dont swim. Feel sad, as condo pools are seldom deeper than waist level. Is condo rental so cheap nowadays? Or is the HDB rentals too high? Free water for bathing, and recreational welfare. Could be the trend for employers to house workers in condo. I guess the properties will always have support from more import of Foreign workers. AsiaOne Tuesday, Jun 12, 2012 A CHINESE national died Monday night after reportedly jumping into a swimming pool following a drinking session with friends. The construction worker had been drinking with about five or six others at a Kovan coffeeshop before heading back to Goodrich Park, an old condominium where they were staying. The Straits Times said the group decided to go for a swim and then shower at the pool facilities as they shared three toilets between 10 people. The worker, aged about 40 and who apparently could not swim, then jumped into the pool. He began struggling and was pulled from the water. A friend said a neighbour quickly jumped in to help pull him out. He was apparently still breathing when he emerged from the water. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they received a call at about 10.35pm and sent an ambulance to the scene. The worker was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The friend told the English daily that the worker had been in Singapore for more than a year and had just moved into Goodrich Park condominium on the afternoon before he died. Most of the people living in the condominium are foreign workers; companies are known to rent flats as dormitories for their employees. The condominium is understood to be quite run-down and could be demolished by the end of the month, evening daily Lianhe Wanbao said. [email protected]

Maybe also pools in private clubs. According to surveys, many swimmers/users pee in the pool, and many also don't shower before jumping into the water. Sometimes other swimmers kena red eye after using the pool because of contact with the pool water mixed with urine, sweat, makeup, etc. How to prevent such unhygienic behavior? Put auto showers at the gates to the pool? Compulsory peeing in the toilet just before the gates, at least reduce the amount of pee going into the pool water later?

Dec 9, 2010 Frequent unsightly finds in the pool I HAVE been troubled by the frequent sighting of faeces in Ang Mo Kio swimming pool. I am an avid swimmer and have been patronising the pool at least twice a week. Public pools are meant for everyone. It is just plain wrong for anyone, young or old, to defecate in the pool. There is simply no excuse when the toilets are situated just next to the pool. Worse, the faeces are not found in the children's pool but the lap pool meant for adults. Such bad behaviour is intolerable. Together with other regular swimmers, I have highlighted these incidents to the lifeguards. I feel sorry for the lifeguards who have to dredge up such stuff. Laurelle He (Ms) Link
