More car owners are using Euro car plates which are considered illegal as their font size and colour do not conform to the LTA's vehicle licence plate requirements.] By DARYLL NANAYAKARA THEY are bright, stylish - and illegal. And they are hot, so much so that some car owners are willing to risk a jail term of up to three months just so they could have number plates that look good even though they do not conform with Land Transport Authority (LTA) stipulations, such as European Union-style ones. The LTA told my paper that 726 drivers were caught in the first four months this year for such offences. For the whole of last year, only 2,039 were caught. Car workshops told my paper that such licence plates are still flying off the shelves despite the severe penalty. On the average, the workshops said they each receive between 35 and 50 requests per month from drivers wanting to switch to the illegal licence plates - which can cost between $40 and $65 each, depending on the size and design. Mr S. L. Teo, 32, from Autozone Motoring, said: "There will always be a demand for the nicer ones that are illegal. "The approved ones have too many restrictions in terms of how they should look and how big they should be." Another workshop operator, Deck Carcraft's Jackson Kang, 27, said: "Customers are willing to take the risk even after we tell them the plates are not approved ones. "To them, how their car looks is more important." Another reason smaller plates appeal to drivers is to avoid detection by the authorities. Illegal plates that use reflective fonts and contain ornamental marks alongside the vehicle's registration number may make it difficult to read the car's licence number when the vehicle is moving, for example, when it is involved in a hit-and-run accident. A staff member of a workshop, who declined to be named, said: "The majority of the drivers come with heavily modified cars they use in illegal races and the smaller the plates, the harder it would be for the Traffic Police to read them." According to LTA guidelines on the One.Motoring website, approved licence plates should have letters and figures that are 70mm high, 50mm wide and 10mm broad. However, illegal plates usually have fonts that are between 10mm and 15mm smaller than stipulated by the LTA. A spokesman for LTA said drivers caught with plates that do not conform to requirements face a fine of up to $1,000 or a jail term of up to three months. In addition, the drivers would have to have the defective plates made good within seven days or risk facing a maximum fine of $2,000 or six months' jail - the penalty for repeat offenders. Does your CO or MIL (or parents lol) always nag you for reckless driving? Even though you feel like it's too slow for you / you are in complete control always / you cut in and out of lanes safely? Liddat how? Do you just wayang when driving with them and unleash when solo? p.s. also applies to vice versa i.e. you feel that you are safe driver but CO complain you drive too slow Just a lighthearted post not meant to start any heated debates or flame wars. Some of you may know that I recently changed car. Previously when I was driving my old petrol car, I developed a driving style which is more towards keeping to the speed limit, and occasionally chionging the rightmost lane if I am in a rush or feeling impatient. However, with my current hybrid car, my driving style changed in a bid to save petrol and get a good FC, especially since there is a real-time FC indicator. I realised that my desire to save petrol and money outweighed the desire to speed and feel "shiok", to the extent that sometimes I think I am being a road hog As for driving along NSHW, I had been largely keeping to the speed limit, with occasional 120-130 km/h during overtaking. So far have not driven my hybrid car to MY yet, but will do soon... What is your driving style?

Hi bros anyone knows where I can install those triangular Formula 1 style brake lights.. saw some kits advertised on ebay or amazon but bad reviews often accompany the products..for not being waterproof etc Any workshops here can do the sales and installation properly? Regards

At a San Juan funeral home, the body of Georgina Chervony Lloren was propped up in her red-cushioned rocking chair Monday and wearing the gown from her second marriage 32 years ago. She was surrounded by plants and flowers. Her daughter, Miriam Chervony, said her mother specified that this was how she imagined her wake. She died Sunday. The wake was held at Marin Funeral Home, which is well-known for putting on unusual, thematic wakes. At one wake, a slain boxer was memorialized standing in a makeshift boxing ring. At another, the deceased was propped up on his motorcycle.

South Korea unveiled its new “tourist police” force Wednesday, with snappy uniforms from rapper Psy’s costume designer and a “Gangnam Style” launch in central Seoul. Around 100 young policemen and women make up the first batch of the new force – formed to protect tourists from being ripped off during their stay in the South Korean capital. The officers were handpicked for their linguistic skills, and can speak a range of languages including English, Japanese and Mandarin. “Those who think they were overcharged by taxi drivers or street food vendors can come and talk to us. We will help settle the problem,” English-speaking recruit Park Jae-Hyoung told AFP. Each officer wears a badge denoting his language expertise on a special dark-blue uniform created by one of the costume designers for the “Gangnam Style” star Psy. The singer’s global hit was played at Wednesday’s launch event, with a police drill unit performing his signature horse-riding dance. “The tourist police wasn’t created because this country is unsafe,” Lee Charm, president of the Korea Tourism Organization told the new recruits. “You are ambassadors who promote how safe this country is,” he said. “From now on, you guys will be very busy having pictures taken with tourists.” The police are unarmed and are meant to summon regular officers in the event of any serious crime. South Korea unveiled its new "tourist police" force at Gwanghwamun square in Seoul on Oct 16, 2013, with snappy uniforms from rapper Psy's costume designer and a Gangnam Style launch. The tourist police will protect tourists from being ripped off during their stay in the South Korean capital. The Straits Times; Published on Dec 07, 2012 FOREIGN LABOUR: Try COE-style bidding for productivity boost THE current system of a fixed percentage quota with an algorithm of escalating tax levies does not promote competition and the efficient use of scarce manpower ("Forum gathers public views on next year's Budget"; last Friday). Unproductive employers often hide under the protection of an assured quota of cheap foreign labour to survive, making the productivity drive fruitless. To improve productivity in a sustainable way, industries should adopt a bidding system for labour like the auction for certificates of entitlement (COEs) for cars. There should be separate categories for different industries. Work permits or high-income employment passes should be divided into the following categories: Construction/marine sectors; Manufacturing sector; Service sector; Open category for industries that have exceeded their quota limits; Maids for permanent and foreign residents; Maids for families of citizens with a combined income of more than $8,000 a month and/or are private property owners; and Maids for families with a combined monthly income of under $3,000 and/or who own up to a four-room Housing Board flat, with children under 10 years old. Disabled Singaporeans and elderly parents should be exempt from the bidding scheme and be allowed to hire a maid at a concession. The hiring of maids is a luxury, like the owning of cars. Families which wish to obtain such a luxury should be charged stiff fees to discourage usage. To cater to the eventuality of there being fewer maids, more neighbourhood eldercare and childcare centres should be opened in residential areas. Businesses, including charity organisations, must bid for the labour COE. The Government can allocate special subsidies in the form of credits for deserving companies which serve the public interest. It can also consider giving special credits to companies in which citizens make up 80 per cent of the workforce. Lai Yew Sin Copyright
