  1. Samsung and Huawei crush Apple's smartphone global market share It wasn't long ago that it looked like Apple would overtake Samsung to grab the biggest chunk of the global smartphone market. But now the company has been pushed into third place by Huawei. By Adrian Kingsley-Hughes for Hardware 2.0 | May 6, 2019 -- 07:32 GMT (15:32 GMT+08:00) It's funny how quickly things can change. Three months ago it seemed like Apple was on track to grab the global smartphone market share crown from Samsung, only to be shoved into third place by Chinese maker Huawei. What does this mean for Apple? Here's a chart that tracks the fight between Apple, Samsung, and Huawei over the past five quarters (courtesy of Bloomberg, based on IDC data): Well, on a totally business front, market share and revenue (and profits) are two separate things, and it might be foolish to focus too heavily on market share. Look at the dollars and cents, if we take the last quarter revenues and profits, it's clear that market share isn't everything. Samsung - Revenue: $44.7 billion | Profits: $5.3 billion Huawei - Revenue: $26.8 billion | Profits: $2.1 billion Apple - Revenue: $58 billion | Profits: $11.6 billion See how revenue and profits tell a different story. But this doesn't mean that Apple shouldn't be worried. The key to Apple's business is market share. The bigger and more robust market share it can create, the more loyal its customers are, and the more it can sell to them in terms of services and accessories that both help to drive profits and lock users deeper into the ecosystem. The more handsets Samsung and Huawei sell, the harder it becomes for Apple to expand its ecosystem. The companies may even be able to grab customers away from Apple – especially at the bottom end, where consumers are more sensitive to price – further eroding Apple's iOS ecosystem. Another thing to bear in mind is that the Huawei effect hits Apple at the core of a vulnerable market – China. Apple has been eyeing China for years now, seeing it as the perfect venue to cause a market explosion. But this effect hasn't materialized. And with increased pressure from the likes of Huawei, it now seems unlikely. And this could, in the longer term, become a much bigger problem, especially as iPhone sales are going soft all round. And if Huawei is right, and it is able to grab 50% of the smartphone market share in China, and take the global market share top spot away from Samsung by 2020, this could squeeze the iPhone even more. While it's never wise to try to predict the future in too much detail, it's hard to not come to the conclusion that Apple's woes are only just beginning, and that the company's focus on services and things like credit cards might be happening at just the right time.
  2. Some time last year, my phone totally died on me, forcing me to purchase a replacement - apart from the money, I wasn't really complaining, as I have been eyeing the Xiaomi 13 Pro for quite some time, clearly impressed by its camera's prowess. Everything about the phone was great. As the flagship model powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon Gen 2, there's no concern for processing power, and my only gripe was that I could only afford the 256GB variant... After spending some time with it, I found a serious problem with the phone - the curved edge of the display! I'm going to explain my hatred for this feature. Yes, some might think that it is a pretty design, but in reality, there are just too many cons to justify it. Pros: Larger screen to bezel ratio Allows the phone to look slimmer Cons: As the curved edge is still part of the display, the extreme edge of the content that you are viewing might fall into that curved area and get slightly distorted The curved edge is still part of the touch screen, and hence one-handed operation of the phone will easily result in accidental touches by the fleshy part of your palm (there's even a setting for you to adjust the unresponsive area near the edge of the screen - even the phone manufacturer knew it was going to be a problem!) Setting the area near the edge to be unresponsive can also result in issues - certain apps, games or programs might require touches near the edge to operate and this could break the experience. It's impossible to get the perfect tempered glass screen protector. As the curved edge require a curve tempered glass piece, seamlessly adhering it to the screen becomes an issue. Tempered glass manufacturers have came up with two solutions - a really thick adhesive layer, or a thin UV-cured liquid glue. With the former, touchscreen responsiveness is subpar and operating the in-display fingerprint sensor can be an issue, and with the latter, it doesn't take more than a couple of weeks for the edges of the adhesive to wear... In my opinion, this is a design feature that I can absolutely do without. Thankfully, it seems that the latest Xiaomi 14 Ultra no longer has this annoying and useless feature. - Zhi Xuan

(Source photo by Google/Kyodo and Getty Images) CHENG TING-FANG, LAULY LI and YIFAN YU, Nikkei staff writersOctober 19, 2021 13:01 JSTUpdated on October 20, 2021 03:31 JST TAIPEI/PALO ALTO, U.S. -- Google has asked suppliers to produce more than 7 million of its newly-announced Pixel 6 smartphones -- double its entire phone shipments last year -- as the U.S. software giant attempts to grab market share from Huawei Technologies and ride a post-pandemic recovery in demand. Sources told Nikkei Asia that Google is attempting to capitalize on its position as the only U.S. maker of smartphones running on the Android operating system. The company has also asked suppliers to build over 5 million of its budget Pixel 5A phones unveiled this spring, the sources said. Its total smartphone shipments last year came to just 3.7 million, according to IDC. Sources say this is the most aggressive move yet by Google to ramp up its smartphone output. It also marks a sharp turnaround from last year, when the company was forced to scale back production due to disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. Google formally unveiled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro at a virtual launch event Tuesday. Both devices are powered by Tensor, the company's first mobile system on a chip, which integrates a group of processing units and increases computing power in an energy-efficient way. The Pixel 6 starts at $599 and the Pro at $899, and both will be available on Oct. 28. Google said the Pixel 6 lineup has the "most advanced cameras" it has ever built and added more machine-learning-powered features such as improved speech recognition, which the company said is made possible thanks to Tensor. The devices run on the Android 12 operating system, which features enhanced security and privacy designs. Google has been telling suppliers since earlier this year that its position as the only U.S. maker of Android smartphones will help it boost business at home, in Europe and Japan, people briefed on the matter said. The company is specifically aiming to snag market share from Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi -- the world's top three smartphone makers -- who have all gained at Huawei's expense. Huawei's smartphones and other devices ran on Google's Android OS before Washington sharply curtailed the Chinese tech company's access to American technology due to national security concerns. Most other leading smartphone makers, including Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo, use Android as their standard OS. Google has touted Tensor as a key differentiator that could enable the company to stand out amid intensifying competition. Prior to the U.S. clampdown, Huawei relied on a similar in-house development strategy to take on Apple and Samsung, who also design their own mobile chips for their flagship smartphones. Google's Tensor is produced by Samsung Electronics using its leading 5-nanometer chip production technology, sources said. The U.S. software and search engine giant has been pushing forward with its hardware ambitions over the past several years. In 2018, it completed a $1.1 billion deal to acquire part of Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC's smartphone division and its 2,000 employees engaged in research and development to boost its handset capability. Google now has a hardware team of more 4,000 employees in Taiwan, its largest hardware development base outside the U.S. Apart from smartphones, Google is working on a new generation of the Pixelbook notebook computer that runs on Google's ChromeOS, two people familiar with the matter said. The company is also developing computer chips to eventually power its Chromebook laptops. Production of the Pixel 6 will remain in China, after the pandemic disrupted Google's plans to move most of its smartphone output to northern Vietnam, Nikkei Asia reported earlier. The affordable Pixel 5A is already made in the Southeast Asian country. Google's ramped-up production goals come as supply chains face mounting challenges from the ongoing global chip and component shortages. Suppliers in China are also scrambling to deal with unexpected electricity suspensions. Pixel phone production has not yet been meaningfully impacted, though technical issues related to waterproofing technology have weighed on the efficiency of phone assembly, sources familiar with the matter told Nikkei Asia. Most suppliers are also cautious on whether Google's ambitious goal to expand its smartphone business will actually materialize as production orders are subject to change depending on market response, they said. "It's likely Google has good market opportunities in Western markets like Europe and the U.S. that are more sensitive to data privacy and care a lot about national security implications associated with electronic devices," Joey Yen, a tech analyst with research company IDC, told Nikkei Asia. "Google wants to bet big on its hardware because it wants to lock in more users and have direct interaction with them as that could give it better data analytics for its future services." Sean Lin, an analyst with Digitimes Research, described Google's move to use its own mobile processor rather than Qualcomm's as a "breakthrough and adventure" for the company. "It means Google is heading down Apple's path of using its own processor together with its own operating system," Lin told Nikkei Asia. "It will be an adventure, as there will be a lot of integration work to do." This could be the moment, he added, when Google's smartphone shipments start to take off, after being limited to a few million units in the past few years. "With its own mobile processors and new hardware ambition, we will see whether Google promotes its hardware products in more sale channels and whether the market will react positively," Lin said. Google said it did not have any comment on specific production volumes, but pointed to past statements describing the technical capabilities of the new Tensor mobile processor.

  7. https://www.macrumors.com/2019/08/30/ip ... ate-rumor/ iPhone 11 Lineup Tipped to Have Familiar Rollout: September 13 Pre-Orders, September 20 Launch Friday August 30, 2019 7:52 am PDT by Joe Rossignol Apple yesterday invited the media to a special event on Tuesday, September 10 at the Steve Jobs Theater, where it is widely expected to unveil three new iPhones alongside an Apple Watch refresh and other announcements. A tipster who claims to work at a major carrier has since provided MacRumors with internal communication that suggests the rumored iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models will be available to pre-order Friday, September 13 ahead of deliveries to customers and in-store availability starting Friday, September 20. MacRumors has received similar tips echoing these dates in recent weeks, so there is a good chance they are accurate. iPhone pre-orders have begun two to three days after Apple's event for years now, followed by availability a week later, so these dates are hardly a surprise but good to know nevertheless. Unlike the iPhone X in November 2017 and the iPhone XR in October 2018, however, all three 2019 iPhones are expected to launch simultaneously. The tipster requested anonymity and asked us not to share the screenshots of the internal communication.
  8. Don't get any wrong ideal ........... It's China Smartphone. Yahoo News : China’s Xiaomi confirms it will bring its smartphones to Singapore this year Today Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone maker known for selling top-notch handsets at bargain bin prices, revealed via social media that it’s next stop beyond the Greater China will indeed be Singapore. Yesterday Xiaomi’s Hong Kong and Taiwan Facebook pages posted messages featuring the company’s rabbit mascot beside a Chinese dragon proclaiming “Hello Singapore”, linking to a Xiaomi Singapore Facebook page. However, now that Hugo Barra posted the same picture on his Google+ profile page, the proverbial writing is on the proverbial wall. Curiously, the Singapore Facebook page appears to have been created in May 2013 – three months before Barra got on board. This might indicate that Xiaomi had been eyeing the move for some time. Xiaomi had publicly indicated that its next overseas stop beyond Taiwan and Hong Kong would be Singapore back in December when it held a fan meetup in Taipei. The move to the city-state will test the company’s chops in a market in which consumers have higher incomes on average. It also will be branching out from exclusively Chinese-speaking markets into a multi-lingual market. Just this morning Xiaomi announced that it had sold over 18 million handsets in 2013, more than twice the 7.19 million it doled out the previous year. In 2014, it’s hoping to hit 40 million. As for revenues, the company raked in over $5.18 billion for the year. Saw it in China last month whilst visiting Hainan Island. Nice and light, only problem is program all in Chinese wording which reframe me from buying....

We have long known that Singapore has an amazing smartphone adoption rate, but how amazing is amazing? Well as it turns out, according to a global study called Consumer Barometer released by Google, Singapore is the number one smartphone adopter in the world at 85 per cent. Based on 150,000 interviews, the study also revealed that more Asians use their smartphones to access the internet more than desktop computers, making Asia a truly mobile-first continent. The blogpost on October 28 by Google reads: “In Asia, consumers are living in a mobile-first world that needs new products and services built with mobile in mind, not as an after thought or nice-to-have. There’s a great chance here for Asian businesses to lead the world in mobile-first innovation by reacting fast to the revolution that’s happened on the streets right outside their office doors. All they need to do is heed the consumers’ call.” Here are some statistics on Singapore that might fascinate you: Singaporeans use an average of 3.3 devices each – one of the highest rates in the world. 19. Of all Smartphone compaines, this one by Boeing (Aircraft Manufacturer) .... yahoo news: Top Secret: Boeing Unveils Secure Smartphone That Can 'Self-Destruct' Taking cues from "Mission Impossible," aerospace giant Boeing is developing a highly secure, self-destructing smartphone that can encrypt calls, protect stored information, or, if someone tries to tamper with or open the phone's casing, delete all of the device's data. The so-called Boeing Black is the Chicago-based company's first push into the realm of secure smartphones. Plans were filed this week with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), but Boeing is releasing few details publicly about the device. The Boeing Black measures 5.2 inches (13 centimeters) tall, making it a bit larger and roughly 50 percent heavier than Apple's iPhone 5, reported the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The device runs on Google's Android operating system, and Boeing officials said the smartphones will be manufactured in the United States. [7 Technologies That Transformed Warfare] "The Boeing Black smartphone was designed with security and modularity in mind to ensure our customers can use the same smartphone across a range of missions and configurations," officials wrote in a short description of the device on the company's website. As such, the phone can be equipped with a diverse range of extra security features, including biometric sensors and satellite transceivers. Unlike regular smartphones, the Boeing Black also uses dual SIM cards to access more than one mobile communications network at a time. The tamper-proof device is being designed for individuals in the U.S. defense and security community who require secure and trusted access to data, according to the company's FCC filings. Boeing has yet to specify when the phone may be available, and for what price, but company officials said they have reached out to potential customers, according to Reuters. With cybersecurity quickly becoming one of the nation's top priorities, Boeing is not the only company interested in gaining a foothold in the market. Silent Circle, an encrypted communications firm based in the U.S., and GeeksPhone, a smartphone company headquartered in Madrid, Spain, joined forces to produce the Blackphone, an encrypted device that runs on a modified version of the Android operating system, reported the WSJ. The Blackphone was first announced last month, and is currently available to pre-order online for $629. BlackBerry Ltd. and Samsung Electronics Co. are also focusing on beefing up security of their products, according to the WSJ. Boeing is one of the largest aerospace and defense contractors in the world, known primarily for the production of commercial airplanes, satellites and fighter jets. link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/top-secret-boeing-unveils-secure-smartphone-self-destruct-131258150.html
