  4. Another bust up over parking space ... Singapore is really too stressful http://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2015/06/driver-allegedly-assaulted-over-dispute-of-parking-space/ An argument between two drivers over a parking space at a carpark ended up with a bruised face and a near-miss “accident” for one. The incident is said to had happened at carpark of Parkland Green, East Coast Park on 30 May (Saturday) around 6:10pm. Mr Yak was waiting for a parking lot after dropping off his wife and kids at the car park when a silver colored car came driving in against the flow of traffic. The car then parked in front of the space that Mr Yak was waiting for with his hazard light turned on. As a result, Mr Yak drove his car forward, in front of the silver colored car and wound down his car window to confront the driver. The driver in the silver colored car is said to be a middle-aged Caucasian, about 35 years old. And there were two kids seated at the back of the car. According to Mr Yak, the driver came down from his car and starting scolding him, “an idiot for being slow” resulting in an argument between the two. All of a sudden, the driver punched him through the car’s window and walked back to his car. The force of the punch was so great that it broke Mr Yak’s glasses and resulted in bleeding of his face. Despite being stunned from the punch, Mr Yak hurried down from his car and tried to take down the other car’s license plate number. “I came down from the car and tried to take down his car number. I stood in front of his car and he just stepped on the accelerator, trying to run me over while escaping.” said Mr Yak. He added, “Eyewitness told me his car plate was SGC9154K, but I am not 100%,” There was no video camera on his dashboard to record the incident. Mr Yak was subsequently treated at Changi Hospital for his injuries. Mr Yak recalled that there were some people around the area, as the car park was situated just in front of the Starbucks and St Marc cafe. He is, however, uncertain if there was any closed-circuit surveillance in the area as there was no electronic gantry at the carpark. He has since made a police report on his assault and beseech for eyewitness of the incident to come forward and give an account of the incident. People with information can write into TOC at [email protected] to link up with Mr Yak. TOC has written to the police on the reported case and will update here when they have replied.

  6. Proven pretty much here in MCF, that no money no talk! Singaporeans more likely to give money than volunteer, help a stranger: Study TODAY reports: The Republic moved up again to 34th on World Giving Index, where Myanmar is ranked the highest. However, Singapore placed 89th for how often they help strangers and 42nd for how often they volunteer. POSTED: 11 Nov 2015 07:50 A volunteer helping an elderly man put on a N95 mask at the Haze Shelter at Tanjong Pagar Community Club on Oct 3, 2015. (Photo: Jaslin Goh / TODAY) SINGAPORE: When it comes to giving to charity, Singaporeans are more likely to give from the pocket, than give up their time to volunteer or help out a stranger. The World Giving Index, compiled by UK-based non-profit Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), showed that nearly six in 10 in Singapore gave money to charity in the month before when polled last year, but less than three in 10 volunteered at a charity, and about four in ten had helped a stranger. Based on these factors, the CAF ranked Singapore 34th on the index, well behind neighbouring countries like Myanmar, which was ranked first, and Malaysia, which placed tenth. But this is a significant improvement from 114th place in the 2012 index and 64th place in the 2013 index. The index ranked 145 countries using 2014 data from Gallup’s World View World Poll, an ongoing research project carried out in more than 140 countries. In most countries surveyed, 1,000 questionnaires are completed by a representative sample of individuals, with larger samples for big countries like China and Russia. Respondents were asked how often they donate to charity, how often they volunteer and how often they help strangers. Singapore ranked 18th for how often residents gave money to charity, but placed 89th for how often they help strangers and 42nd for how often they volunteer. Nonetheless, the Republic was among the top five most improved country over time, improving 11 percentage points over five years. In 2012, for example, only 29 per cent of the respondents gave money to charity, 8 per cent volunteered, and 24 per cent helped a stranger. The report, released on Tuesday (Nov 10), attributed the high levels of giving in Myanmar - where nine out of 10 gave money to charity - and Thailand to high levels of Theravada Buddhism, where many devotees regularly give money and time to ordained monks and nuns, as well as to the upkeep of temples. The country also came in top for volunteering, with half the population doing so, followed by Sri Lanka, Liberia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. “However the achievement will be contrasted with the continuing plight of the Rohingya people within the country,” the report stated, referring to the violent persecution of the Rohingyas, a Muslim minority group who are not allowed to vote and have been driven from their homes to neighbouring countries or into camps. The report also observed that across the world, people responded to those in need. For example, the proportion of people donating money in Ukraine more than quadrupled last year compared with the previous year, probably due to fundraising efforts for those affected by the conflict. Also, Iraq emerged top in helping a stranger despite the security situation in the country. At a global level, the study found that more people are donating money to charity, with almost a third of the world (or 31.5 per cent) giving money to charity in the month before - a rise of 3.2 percentage points from 2013. However, the global proportion of people who said they volunteered time fell slightly, to 21 per cent from 21.3 per cent. And almost half of the world’s adult population said they helped a stranger last year according to the poll, a slight increase on the previous year. i would say that we have to look after ourselves first and if we even struggle to put $$$ on the table for ourselves, hardly can we find the time to volunteer I was in that state, but now tt I am more comfy, I find myself volunteering more with those in need. @little_prince do your pitch here, as how we discussed offline
  7. A Singaporean businessman led police on a 20km car chase when he tried to flee after failing to bribe them on Sunday. In the 11.30pm incident, the 50-year old suspect, driving a Mercedes Benz, was headed to Singapore when he tried to cut the vehicle queue at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (CIQ), obstructing other vehicles in the process. Two police traffic officers on duty at the CIQ complex then tried to take him to the nearest police station. However, the man then got agitated and refused to cooperate, and offered a RM550 (S$213) bribe to Lance Corporal Awang Mohd Massahdi Awang Abunawas and Lance Corporal Mashri Sedek, said the officers. 9. As per topic.... Most Sinkies are just complainers and tend not to be confrontational and take on an issue even if they have the right to... But some Sinkies react BADLY if they are confronted with an issue which they are in the wrong.... Take for example... 1) A person who lives in a house and places an objects to 'reserved' a place on the public road directly opposite his front gate everyday. When other drivers come by, even if there are no vacant spot to park their car....they tend not to dare move the 'object' placed to 'reserved' the spot on the road to one side and park their car. I stood by to observe how drivers react and most reacted as above. 2) A driver improperly parks his/her car and caused obstruction and inconvience to others. When told to park his car properly by others , he/she reacts badly unless when told by proper authorities to do so and then they quietly obeys. Ppl here are getting a better living environment and are more educated but fares badly on social behaviour unless under enforcement. Is this where Sinkies are heading in a so called World Class living environment?
  10. The American owner of sandwich giant Subway has lost its trademark infringement suit against local snack chain Subway Niche. In a 46-page written judgment on Wednesday, High Court judge Judith Prakash ruled in favour of Subway Niche's sole proprietor Lim Eng Wah. Justice Prakash ruled that although Subway Niche's trademark is similar to that of Subway's, there was no real evidence of a likelihood of confusion on the part of the public. The judge noted that Mr Lim, who set up his first stall in 1987, had taken pains to distinguish his goods from Subway's. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_790401.html

  13. Be Careful don't be the next victim. Next time you are caught, just take the ticket and pay the fine! You will never know when is a bribing attempt when is Kopi-money to settle. Singaporean Jailed, fined for bribery bid Wed, Sep 22, 2010 New Straits Times JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA - A Singaporean was sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM10,000 (S$4303)for attempting to bribe a traffic policeman with RM50 (S$21.50). Bus driver Tay Soon Chuan, 42, pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court yesterday after the charge was read out to him in Mandarin. Tay, who is from Hou Gang Avenue, Singapore, committed the offence at Km18.3 of the Lima Kedai- Nusajaya Highway on May 30. He was driving a car when caught speeding during an operation by traffic policemen. The operation was being monitored by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Tay offered RM50 (S$21.50) to constable Muhammad Afizi Salleh for not issuing a summons despite the policeman advising him not to do so. Tay, who was unrepresented, said he had to borrow from relatives to pay the fine. He appealed to judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof for leniency as he was the sole breadwinner of his family with two young children. MACC deputy public prosecutor Noorfazlin Hamdan said Tay's punishment should be a deterrent to the public.

  15. Could not help myself in posting this topic, after the news of a man being 'tortured' alive ( slapped and hit in the groin???) persumbly by a Sinkie woman made 'headline' news. This is not new. As a matter of fact, the Sinkie men had it coming..long before this made news. Searching for foreign brides as they were hopeless in 'handling' the local variety, all points to the signal, that not only are they pathetic but silly in getting themselve 'done-in' later by the foreign variety as well. Numerous cases of PRC, Viet and others ex-brides, all took it as a opportunity to 'dig gold' in these pathetic men and then 'run road'. Maybe the fact that the ever powerful Women Charter had these men all 'brain' dead, as to how to have some honour and pride left, when they do need to handle their women! Some being losers in any relationship, these men would seek other sorts of gratifications (Geyland..etc) to 'help' restore some manly pride to their bruised ego. If you are one of those who fits the description here or thereabout, I think it will be appropriate for me to kindly ask you to 'jump in front of a train' ( not the MRT cos it'll inconvience others) or from a tall building. Cos to be a man...a proper man ( no gay here please)...one should not gravitate to such a level as displayed by the man being featured in the news.
  16. SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A Singaporean member of parliament was attacked and set on fire on Sunday by a 70-year-old man who was angry at not being given a Chinese New Year gift, the country's state broadcaster said. Seng Han Thong was taken to hospital with between 10 and 15 percent burns after the assault during a ceremony to present Chinese New Year gifts at a community club, Channel NewsAsia reported on its website. The chairman of a nearby Chinese temple Aw Swee Seng, who organised the event, also suffered burns in the rare attack in the Southeast Asian city-state known for its safety. "A man ran in, lit a bottle of kerosene and threw it at Mr Seng. Half of Mr Seng's hair was burnt ... his back suffered burns as well," a witness named Zhang was quoted as saying. "The man who threw the bottle tried to escape, but some people caught him." Temple officials said the man was disgruntled at not being selected to receive the hong bao, a red envelope with money traditionally given at Chinese New Year, which contained S$200 ($135), the broadcaster said. Singapore was the first country in Asia to fall into a recession last year. It has one of the highest GDP per capita in the world, ahead of the United States on 2007 figures, but ranks alongside Kenya for income disparity. The ruling People's Action Party (PAP), which has been in power since independence in 1965, says welfare should not be a crutch and there is no unemployment benefit.
