It seems, in the civil service, a lousy scholar who so long he don't screw up big time, will end up in a higher position than an excellent farmer (non-scholar), even if the farmer is better and more productive than the scholar. How meritocratic is this? Scholars can easily get back-to-back promotions and continually top level performance grading, while a farmer will never be considered for back-to-back promotion (no matter how good) and worse, performance grading after every promotion is a default 'C'. Again, how meritocratic is this? If these scholars are put on an even footing with the farmers, same starting point, same running equipments ..., I dare say the results at the finishing line will be astonishing. Comments?

President's Scholar charged with false entries in SAF documents to have case re-tried http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...have-case-re-tr By Ian Poh A 28-year-old army captain, who was charged with making false entries in an official document, will have his case re-tried after a military appeals court quashed his conviction. Sherwayn Tan, 28, had been fined $2,000 for falsely indicating he had used a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) facility to train soldiers under him, and another unrelated charge. He also received a letter of discharge from the Defence Ministry (Mindef) following his guilty plea in a Subordinate Military Court last July. But on Monday, a five-man Military Court of Appeal unanimously decided that that the conviction be set aside following an appeal by the infantry officer, who is also a President's Scholar. Tan holds an Economics degree from the London School of Economics. It is understood the SAF scholar, who enlisted for military service in 2004 and had a clean disciplinary record prior to the offences, is nearing the end of his six-year bond.

According to this York Press article, Singaporean student Jonathan Wong, 23, was caught with 50 child pornographic videos. Jonathan Wong was formerly from The Chinese High School and Hwa Chong Junior College and had reportedly been caned in front of the school population in TCHS, though the offence for which he was punished publicly remains unknown. The child pornographic videos were found on the university -

3rd one in less than 6 mths...ok..one of them is just normal trainee...but still...altough we do not expect them to be angels...definitely we won't want them to be evil...3 in 6 mths...can we consider it as 50 yr storm ??? or is it a situation that it happen last time as well...but just they goes unreported?? and well...i don't expect MOE to be flawless in their selection system...but then what are the qualities they found in this candidates? Scholar admits child porn A SINGAPOREAN student on a teaching scholarship at the University of York in Britain has pleaded guilty to downloading indecent videos of children. Jonathan Wong, 23, who was once in the gifted education programme at Hwa Chong Institution, was caught after undergraduates became suspicious of files on the university's intranet and told the authorities, said The York Press newspaper. The files were traced to him and police raided his home on the university's Heslington campus. They took away his laptop and hard drive, where they found 50 videos of hardcore child pornography, some of which were graphic, had audio, or lasted more than an hour. They also featured girls as young as six, Mr Martin Butterworth, from the Crown Prosecution Service, told magistrates in York on Wednesday. He described the videos as 'quite serious offences'. Wong, said to have few friends at York, where he was studying history on a Ministry of Education (MOE) scholarship, pleaded guilty to 17 charges of downloading child pornography between July 15, 2008, and March 19 this year. ********* plain stupidity.....uploading videos on his school's intranet. Scholar or not....his future will be down the drain. hmm, wonder if MOE will dismiss him?

Again : 2 China 'Scholars' Run Away from JC Just got this report on my table. 2 China scholars from Anderson Junior College were found absent from class for several days. When school staff checked their hostel, they found that the students had packed up and gone to USA! Apparently these 'smart' students found out that they don't need A level results to gain entry into US universities. They secretly applied for an American University. When they got accepted by one, bought their air-tickets and then run! What can the Singapore Government do? Sue them? Recover our money? They were not bonded wor. Many more foreign students will follow their example. These students were brought over to study in Secondary 3. Gifted? Many are older than our local Secondary 3 students. When I was in China recruiting students to study in Singapore, I often receive money sandwiched within the pages of application forms. Some Chinese parents mistook that I was recruiting ASEAN scholars for the Singapore Government. The highest amount I found was US$8,000. All the money was returned. Can you imagine when the real actual people go recruiting ...... Shockingly, these foreign ASEAN scholars only need to pass one subject to stay on. Not like Singaporean students, must pass English Language and another how many subjects ah? Our Government sets aside huge amounts of China Fund for schools to recruit these students. Now, I heard another Indian Fund is set up. Wow!
