Volvo 40.1 Concept (XC40) Volvo 40.2 Concept (S40) 40.1 and 40.2 concepts are built on Volvo’s CMA platform After showing teasers on Snapchat, Volvo has now officially revealed two new concept cars. Dubbed 40.1 and 40.2, the cars preview new Volvo 40 Series models and are most likely a hint as to the design of the next Volvo S40 and XC40. Both the concepts pick up design cues seen on the Volvo XC90, S90, and V90, starting with the “Thor’s Hammer” running lights and wide-mouth grille with Volvo’s Iron Mark emblem. The 40.1 is a crossover design with high ground clearance, black fender cladding, and darkened pillars and a black roof. Taut lines define the bodywork, while the sloped rear window is bookended by L-shaped taillights. The 40.2, meanwhile, is a lower and more sedan-like car, with its C-shaped taillights that more closely match the design of the new S90 sedan. As with the 40.1, the 40.2 concept rides relatively high on its large alloy wheels, with black cladding around the fender recalling the tough, high-riding stance of the S60 Cross Country. The Volvo 40 cars will be the first to ride on the company’s new CMA modular platform. Smaller than the SPA platform used for the XC90/S90/V90, CMA will also accommodate a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, in this case called T5 Twin Engine. That powertrain will incorporate a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a three-cylinder gasoline engine, as well as electric motors. The CMA platform will also add an all-electric model, though it won’t arrive until sometime after Volvo’s larger, SPA-based EV debuts in 2019. The 40.1 and 40.2 concepts represent Volvo’s contention that the global appetite for “premium small cars” will continue to grow over the coming years. “CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars,” Volvo Car Group senior vice president of design Thomas Ingelath said in a statement. “They have an energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavor of small Volvos to come.” The first production models from Volvo’s new 40 Series range will debut in 2017, potentially with styling not too far removed from these concepts.

https://jalopnik.com/check-out-what-a-toyota-prius-engine-looks-like-after-3-1848018980 <Check Out What A Toyota Prius Engine Looks Like After 303,000 Miles This Prius engine was neglected, but it was still alive and kicking. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) A Toyota Prius has joined my shared fleet in what so far is a positive Carvana experience. Since I love knowing all I can about every vehicle in the fleet I’ve been binging all sorts of Prius videos. One of the ones that I’ve come across is a detailed teardown of a high-mileage 2004 Prius engine that looks good, even after some neglect. A few readers have expressed concerns about picking up a Prius with 90,000 miles and expecting to run it 30,000 miles a year. That kind of driving can be hard on a car. Yet, I’ve seen plenty of second and third-generation Prii driving around in taxi service with more than 300,000 miles and still kicking. If, like me, you wonder what the engine of a high-mileage Prius looks like, YouTuber Speedkar99 tore one down and examined its wear. The engine here is a 1.5-liter 1NZ-FXE inline-four from a second-generation Prius with 303,561 miles. This engine uses a low compression ratio and a high expansion ratio. This works by holding the intake valve open longer for a reverse flow of intake air into the intake manifold, simulating an Atkinson-cycle engine. The result is less power but more efficiency, perfect for a hybrid. The 2ZR-FXE uses a similar system. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) The YouTuber informs us at the beginning of the video that the engine was running fine without issues before the teardown. The Prius the engine was taken out of was a parts vehicle. Our host tears through the engine, giving us a thorough explanation of how everything works. But we’re here to see how this engine has fared over 17 years, and the video certainly delivers. First up is a tour through the positive crankcase ventilation system and even the throttle body, which presents some dirty build-up and could use some good cleaning. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) But the valves appear to be clean thanks to the injectors. Next, we take a peek under the timing chain cover, where things look a little discolored. The YouTuber says that this is likely because the car may have not gotten timely oil changes but even then, there isn’t a lot of wear. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) The camshafts and the head also look clean for the mileage they’ve gone through. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) Further in the teardown, the YouTuber cracked open the oil pan to reveal a sad sight. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) Yep, that’s sludge. They blame the sludge on cheap oil, the cheap oil filter and deferred oil changes. The filter in the oil pump pickup tube appeared to be pretty gunked up and the pistons have some carbon buildup on them. The bigger point of concern for the YouTuber was clogged-up oil control rings on the pistons. Screenshot: Speedkar99 / YouTube (Other) The host explains that this could mean that the engine might not have been getting proper lubrication there. Overall, the engine looks pretty good despite some neglect. It’s no wonder why Prii are able to rack up so many miles on their odometers when they appear to be so durable. Still, the sludge build-up is a perfect example of why you should always keep up on your maintenance.>

This survey was done overseas but it’s interesting to see quite a few so called luxury cars in the list and specifically BMWs.. https://www.autoblog.com/photos/top-11-cars-that-are-resold-in-the-first-year/#slide-7556521 What do you think arethe top ten cars people will sell after a year’s ownership? And why? Poor reliability? Good trade in? Change in COE price?

Home LED downlights became popular few yrs ago and is now the norm for new home installations. Would like to chk.. Anyone encounter breakdowns within short period? Can share your experience? My home currently using PLC. Does retrofitting to LED improve the mean time between failure (MTBF)? I heard a few cases of LED driver failure but hw widespread is it? Replacing LED costs a lot more than a PLC tube.

Good day fellow brothers. It's been long guys. Hope all of you are doing fine ;) I wanted to know, anyone here is driving the Jaguar XJL 3.0 SC? I'm looking at getting one as it's quite attractively priced in the used market to replace my ageing F02 730Li. However, since it's quite a "niche" brand, not too sure about the wear and tear, plus the parts availability. Was looking at the S400 too, but depreciation still too much for me to swallow. Would appreciate valuable input as it would greatly assist in me making up my mind. Thank You

Assuming proper maintenance is done. I unsure if 4 / 5 / 6 speed n 8 / 9 speed belong to same cat, thus the separate cat. Some articles here - http://articles.latimes.com/2014/feb/12/business/la-fi-autos-reliability-20140213 http://www.aa1car.com/library/what_goes_wrong_with_cars.htm http://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/advice/which-sort-of-auto-gearbox-is-best-/ Also appreciate contributions from fellow experienced bro / sis. Nowadays rides getting pricey, thus I hope with the introduction of such a thread & constructive inputs, all car-owners / would-be owners can benefit / make informed decision. Kindness n objectivity r greatly appreciated. Do not treat mentioning of particular brand / make as bashing.

Hi, My 2006 Honda Edix mileage very low, about 112K only. When the car was 6 or 7 years old, I had to change the whole suspension because there was an issue with the bushing. Now, the mechanic says my gearbox has some hairline cracks. Am I just unlucky to get such problems with a japanese car or are these normal? Should I consider extending COE by 5 years with the cracks on my gearbox?

After years of setting the standard for quality and reliability, Japanese brand autos have dropped below the industry average, according to a new report by J.D. Power and Associates. The latest Initial Quality Study, which ranks brands based on consumer surveys after owning a vehicle for three months, shows the collective results of Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi and Subaru are not keeping pace with the industry as a whole and the Korean auto brands, in particular. "It's not that the Japanese models are all getting worse, but this shows they are not improving as fast as their competitors," said Renee Stephens, vice president of U.S. automotive quality at J.D. Power. "This is a clear shift in the quality landscape." http://www.cnbc.com/id/102766497

Deciding to get either a mx-5 or an eg6 for fun driving, occasional thrashing around and maybe rare tracking in malayasia. saw a red NA mx-5 on sgcarmart and went down for a look. it has some rust on the hood and some oil leaks in the engine bay. i know the reliability of this car is legendary especially in USA. but is the cost of repairs and maintenance low in singapore context? also, assuming the NA is going for about $7k depreciation while the NC is going for $10k depreciation and finally the MRS is also around $10k depreciation, which is actually a better buy in terms of yearly maintenance costs? thanks for all input.

According to a study done early this year, German-made cars were not as reliable as many believed them to be. Warranty Direct, a U.K. provider of direct consumer warranties has studied its claims data to compile a list of the manufacturers with the most reliable engines - and Audi, BMW and Volkswagen all finished in the bottom 10 out of a total 36 makers. In fact, the only firm whose cars had a worse engine failure rate than Audi was MG Rover. The other Germans, BMW and Volkswagen came in at seventh and ninth from bottom respectively. At the other end of the table, Honda scooped the gold medal - the study found that just one in every 344 Honda engines failed, compared to one in every 27 Audi engines. Fellow Japanese rival Toyota came in second while Mercedes managed to outperform its fellow German brands with a respectable third-place finish. So do you think the Japanese are more reliable than the Germans? (I meant engines..)

Top & Bottom 10 of a study into engine reliability

Every year, American publication, Consumer Reports conducts a reliability survey from its subscribers' experience with 1.2 million vehicles over the last three years. In this year's report, the biggest surprise is Ford's free fall from inside the top 10 in 2010 to 27th of the 28 brands rated. Only two years ago, Consumer Reports had hailed Ford as a "poster child" of reliability. According to Consumer Reports director of automotive testing Jake Fisher, consumers encountered a lot of problems with Ford's Powershift Dual-clutch transmission and 'MyFord' Touch infotainment system. These systems were introduced to a number of new or revised models such as the Fiesta, Focus and Explorer. On the report, Ford commented that the results matched the internal data the company had received and added that the company had made major improvement earlier this year, and that the survey lagged behind current trends. As usual, Japanese brands dominated the top positions in the survey. Toyota took the top three places with its Scion, Toyota and Lexus brands, followed by Mazda, Subaru, Honda and Acura. From a personal experience, my family's previous Japanese cars have been to the workshop lesser than the current VW during the first three years of ownership. Audi deserves a pat on the back for moving up to 8th in ranking, a huge improvement from the 26th position in 2011.

Despite recalls in recent years, Jap reliability is still hard to match (at least in the 'affordable' segment in the market). Alfa etc give us the soul and beauty.... where to find a car which combine the two??

[extract] J.D Power and Associates has released the result of the study on the overall dependability of three-year vehicles sold in the US. Some 31,000 car owners of 2009 model-year vehicles were polled regarding the problems they encountered with their ride over the last 12 months. From the 32 brands included in the survey, 25 improved their scores with Lexus topping the chart with 86 problems per 100 vehicles (89 PP100). This is followed by Porsche with 98 PP100; Cadillac with 104 PP100; Toyota with 104 PP100 and Scion with 111 PP100. Another feather in Lexus

A study was recently done by J.D Power on the factors influencing car buying decision. The study was conducted from more than 24,000 US buyers of 2011 who made their purchase in 2011. Although the study was not done in Singapore, there are some interesting points that local consumer and distributors can take note. The study found that word-of-mouth is typically a critical factor in the choice a car buyer makes, yet conventional wisdom about which brands have the best quality may be sorely out of date. The study found that 40 percent of buyers said they steered clear of one brand or another because of what they had heard about quality, rather than actually checking for the latest data.
