But the 29-year-old self-employed man who runs a family-owned provision shop at Block 203 Toa Payoh North is appealing. He was found guilty, after a nine-day trial, of raping the woman at a unit above the shop in the early hours of Feb 12, 2009. Ong was introduced to the woman at Zouk disco at Jiak Kim Street when he went there with his brother. He claimed that the woman seduced him when they were dancing at the dance floor. He further testified in his defence that while taking her home in a cab at about 4am, they kissed, and she agreed to his suggestion to head for his place. But the prosecution's case was that the victim, while still in her semi-conscious drunken stupor state, made frantic phone calls to her mother and friend to take her home when she found herself in a place she did not know. She had cried and said repeatedly that she wanted to go home but Ong would not let her leave unless she had sex with him. The main issue was whether sex was consensual. District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim rejected his defence that sex was consensual. She found that the prosecution had made out a case beyond reasonable doubt.

A local woman has come forward to share her experience of having married a fugitive rapist. Mdm Zhang (43, masseuse) told reporters that she got to know her Norwegian husband Michael (57, businessman) through a friend about 11 years ago when she was on holiday in Italy. The two had maintained contact through the internet and met again in Dubai in 2004. They dated for a year before getting married in Singapore on 25 May 2005. Mdm Zhang said, "I felt very lonely when I was in Dubai. The social rules there were very strict so it was very tough for me. At that time, he became my sanctuary." Their marriage hit an unexpected hitch when her husband was suddenly deported from Singapore in 2006, then extradited back to Norway from Qatar after that. "I didn't know what happened to him. He told me an ex-girlfriend had some financial troubles with her business, so he needed to return and help with investigations," said Mdm Zhang. After that, Mdm Zhang related that she paid more than $3,000 in legal fees on her husband's behalf. The lawyer did not explain to her about the case, but suggested that she search for Michael's name on the internet. "I discovered that Michael was wanted by the Interpol. He is a convicted rapist." According to the Norwegian media, Michael was sentenced to 3 years and 10 months' jail for raping his ex-girlfriend. He had also been arrested for using violence on nearly ten women, including threatening his ex-wife with a knife. Michael became a fugitive when he disappeared before his case was brought on appeal in Norway. Michael eventually served his sentence then returned to Singapore to look for Mdm Zhang at her flat. At the time, Mdm Zhang refused to let Michael into her house. Furious with the refusal, the man attempted to force entry, resulting in Mdm Zhang summoning the police for help. Three weeks after the first incident, Michael returned to Mdm Zhang's house with some men. She was not at home to stop them and the men made off with her property including furniture, appliances and her computer. Jan 6, 2011 RAPE TRIAL Woman tried to seduce me, says accused In police statements, he says they had consensual sex at his flatBy Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent A MAN accused of raping a woman he met while clubbing at Zouk claimed the alleged victim tried to seduce him on the dance floor. Ong Mingwee said the then 22-year-old woman agreed to go back to his place, where they had consensual sex. His account of what happened was revealed in police statements heard in court yesterday, the third day of his trial. Station Inspector Azman Mohd Hussin of the Serious Sexual Crime Branch of the Criminal Investigation Department read aloud two statements he took from Ong. The 28-year-old was arrested on Feb 12, 2009, the day of the alleged rape, in a flat above a provision shop he runs in Toa Payoh North. He stated that he was at Zouk with his brother when he met the alleged victim and her friend. The woman was drunk by then but continued drinking with him. She pulled him to the dance floor, he claimed, adding that she was dancing as though she was trying to seduce him, which made him feel embarrassed. When the club closed, he left with her in a cab and they kissed, he said, adding that she agreed to go home with him. When they reached his flat, however, the woman started to cry and said she was scared and wanted to go home. 'I was like, freak out, because all the while she was okay with me. I then tried to calm her down and told her not to worry as I would not harm her or hurt her,' he stated. Ong said he managed to calm her down and they started to kiss again. He said he tried to have sex with her but was unable to because he had drunk too much. She broke down again, and said she wanted to make a phone call and go home. Ong said he heard her crying non-stop as she talked to her friend and later her mother, which irritated and angered him. 'Turned off' by the woman's long conversation with her mother, he said he took the phone and spoke to the mother in the kitchen, assuring her that he would take her daughter home safely. When he returned to the room, he asked the woman if he could have sex with her. He claimed that she nodded her head. After the act, he did not take her home as he was 'not in a mood'. 'It was supposed to be a great night but because of her behaviour, it turned out to be (a) silly night. I don't understand why she wants to report me to the police. I did try to call her after the incident but she did not reply.' In a further statement, when asked by Station Insp Azman why he did not take the woman home as promised, Ong said: 'Because I felt (like) poo after what had happened.' He denied telling her that she must have sex with him if she wanted to leave. 'I said something like, 'Let's have sex first and you can go home.'' The alleged victim took the stand yesterday afternoon but her evidence was held behind closed doors following an application by Deputy Public Prosecutors Leong Wing Tuck and Victor Lim. A 26-year-old Chinese woman's nightmare started five years ago when she was raped by the canteen operator of her school. "He took me to a motel on the pretext of introducing a job to me. Instead, he raped me there," said Chen XiaoLi (not her real name). Since then, Chen had been 'controlled' by the 40-year-old rapist, surnamed Zhang, who threatened to reveal the rape to the public if she went against his commands. Over the past five years, she was always assaulted by the man, who also forced her to go for abortions six times. "I could not retaliate because he said he would kill my whole family if I did that," she told Da He Bao. Chen had been putting up a strong front and kept the sorrow to herself, thinking that everything would be fine as long as she followed his "commands". One January morning, she finally broke down when she saw her nude photographs pasted on the walls, lamp posts and trees in her village in Henan. "I believed he took the photos while I was asleep," she said. "I also believe that he wanted to take revenge and shame me because I attempted to run away from him earlier," she said. She said Zhang had offered her to purchase the photographs for RM50,000 yuan (RM25,000). Failing which, he would post them on the Internet. A villager Li Ziqing said he and Chen's father rushed to "clean up" the village and picked up more than 200 photos. Chen's family lodged a police report on March 9.

June 30, 2008 Delusions drove hawker to rape stepdaughter By Khushwant Singh SUSPECTING that his wife and stepdaughter had installed spy cameras in the flat, hawker Tam Yong Onn decided to give them something to film by raping his 20-year-old stepdaughter. The 43-year-old hawker was jailed for 21 years with 21 strokes of the cane on Monday after he pleaded guilty to molesting and raping the young woman, and taking amphetamine. The High Court on Monday was told that the man was suffering from paranoid delusions caused by smoking Ice. Tam had met his wife in 2002. She and her daughter from her first marriage then moved into his flat and he married her in July 2006. She later gave birth to another daughter. On June 27 last year, he was at home with his stepdaughter while his wife was manning their food stall. The stepdaughter told police that at about 3pm, she saw Tam examining the television and air conditioning unit in the master bedroom. He then went out with something in a red plastic bag. When he returned, he started cutting another plastic bag into ribbons. Tam then confronted her and showed her the back of a wall-mounted clock. He insisted that a round object - the size of 10 cent coin - was a spy camera. He insisted on checking her cellphone as he claimed that she was recording him. When he returned the phone, she called her mother to say that her stepfather was acting strangely again. Moments later, Tam dragged her into the master bedroom, and tied her hands and ankles with plastic strips. He ignored her assertions that there were no cameras or bugs and taped her mouth with masking tape. He told the victim: 'Since all of you want to film me, I will make love to you and let all of you see.' He then molested and raped her. When his wife got home, Tam insisted that his stepdaughter was a member of an organisation out to harm him and he wanted her to feel remorse for the rest of her life for being unfaithful to him.
