Thailand is accelerating expansion plans at three Bangkok-area airports -- Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang and U-Tapao. The government is looking to accommodate an expected increase in travelers in the upcoming busy season and beyond, a spokesperson told local media. Multiple projects are underway at Suvarnabhumi, Thailand's main international gateway. A third runway is set to be completed this year, and the government plans to solicit bids next year for construction of a new terminal. The additions are expected to enable the airport to handle 120 million travelers a year. In Singapore, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced in August that work would resume on the new Terminal 5 at Changi Airport. "The future of aviation remains bright," he said. The new terminal -- a long-term project expected to finish in the mid-2030s -- will be able to operate as smaller sub-terminals to adjust capacity as needed and prevent infections from spreading between flights. This facility, along with an expansion of Terminal 2, will boost Changi's capacity to 140 million passengers a year, up 65% from pre-COVID levels. These are part of a broad push around the region to expand airports to lift pandemic-hit economies, both by buoying the tourism industry and via an economic boost from the construction projects. Eight major Asian economies are investing $164 billion in airport projects, according to Fitch Solutions. The Philippines and Vietnam are outpacing even mainland China, with $44.3 billion and $23.7 billion in spending, respectively. Inbound travel to Southeast Asia is gradually recovering, if more slowly than in the West. The number of passengers at Changi had returned to 58% of 2019 levels as of late August, according to Singapore Transport Minister S. The impact is already being felt at Tan Son Nhat International Airport near Ho Chi Minh City, where a long queue snaked from domestic flight check-in counters during a visit in mid-September. Nearly 20% of domestic flights in Vietnam faced delays or other issues in June, according to local media, with most caused by overly packed schedules. Tan Son Nhat is set to break ground soon on an 11 trillion dong ($460 million) expansion slated for completion in 2024, boosting capacity by 80% to 45 million passengers a year. Work is also underway on the new Long Thanh International Airport nearby, now scheduled to open in 2025. There are concerns that these expansions will increase supply far beyond demand. Total capacity in Thailand, southern Vietnam, the Philippines and Singapore is set to swell to 460 million people based on known projects alone -- well over five times the total number of international travelers in 2019. The Philippines in mid-September awarded the $11 billion Sangley Point International Airport project to a consortium including Samsung group member Samsung C&T, an affiliate of local conglomerate LT Group, and Munich Airports International. The decision brings plans for the new airport back on track after a previous contract winner dropped out amid profitability concerns. "Southeast Asian countries have been starting to put funding for coronavirus countermeasures into infrastructure development and other public works investments, making it easier to move forward with plans," said Makoto Saito of the NLI Research Institute. But companies still remain uncertain about the likely profit margins of these projects. Airport expansion presents business opportunities to construction companies. But those companies will face high material and labor costs, just like airport operators that are making the investments. "Not only are large-scale construction projects at overseas airports risky, the profit margins are slim," said an executive at a Japanese general contractor with an extensive track record landing contracts in Southeast Asia. A candidate for such contracts would face local contractors, along with rivals from China and South Korea. The bidding wars have devolved into cutthroat price competition. For projects that would strain a government's coffers, debt risks lurk around the corner. Japanese engineering group Taisei entered negotiations with the Sri Lankan government to possibly suspend the expansion of an airport. Funding for the project was frozen due to Sri Lanka's economic crisis, and the talks could result in Taisei being released from its contract.

World Bank Senior Communications Officer (South Asia) Elena Karaban told TNIE, “Earlier this week, the Government of India has withdrawn its request to the World Bank for financing the proposed Amaravati Sustainable Infrastructure and Institutional Development Project. The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has been informed that the proposed project is no longer under preparation following the government’s decision.” The World Bank representative did not reveal if the Indian government cited any reason for withdrawing the loan request. The lending agency generally accepts the decision of the member state if the latter wants to withdraw loan application for a project. The Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, deals with projects related to World Bank financing. The World Bank’s decision has come as a shocker to the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA), which hasn’t received any communication from the DEA. Sources said officials from the authority had a meeting with World Bank representatives just a few days ago, but nothing was informed even then. For the record, the previous TDP regime, in 2016, through the Centre, sought a loan of $500 mn to construct Amaravati under Externally Aided Project (EAP) programme. However, the application was put on hold following letters from a few farmers in the capital region in May, 2017, who alleged widespread irregularities in land procurement. The World Bank reportedly wanted to dig deeper and the same was communicated to the State government earlier this year. With the change of guard, the State officials, through the DEA, reportedly sought time to consider the lending agency’s request. However, the Centre, it is learnt, wasn’t keen on a probe by an international agency, prompting it to withdraw its loan request. For processing the loan, the World Bank needs a sovereign guarantee from the Centre. The World Bank pulling out of the deal triggered a blame game between the YSRC and the Opposition TDP. While TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, under whose leadership the loan was sought, held the YSRC government responsible for the World Bank backing out of the commitment, the ruling party leaders claimed that ‘irregularities’ committed during the TDP’s rule were the reason. Speaking to a news channel, YSRC MP and the State’s Special Representative in New Delhi V Vijayasai Reddy said the World Bank wanted to send a team to investigate complaints by farmers from Amaravati alleging irregularities in land procurement. He was quoted as saying that if a probe was needed, the State government would conduct it and that the State government was against probe by a foreign agency. From his remarks, it appears that both the Centre and the Jagan government are on the same page. Nonetheless, the Centre hasn’t cleared the air yet. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, in an informal chat with reporters in the Assembly lobby on Friday, remarked, “Who instigated the farmers to complain? Wasn’t it YSRC? The present government is responsible for the bank backing out.” The TDP also moved an adjournment motion for a debate on Amaravati in the Assembly, but the Speaker rejected it. YSRC Chief Whip G Srikanth Reddy quickly hit back at Naidu saying that the TDP was carrying on a false propaganda. “The TDP committed atrocities and irregularities in the name of land pooling. This prompted the farmers to write letter to the World Bank. The same has been confirmed by the Working Group on International Financial Institutions as well,” he said at the Assembly’s media point.

The 1,200-ha facility, an area more than three times the size of Sentosa island, will be built in the Strait of Johor facing Tuas. The project, in the Johor Baru port waters, is billed as the “world’s biggest” ship-to-ship (STS) transfer facility. It will be able to accommodate up to 30 vessels at one time. Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad witnessed the project’s signing ceremony on Tuesday (April 2) in Putrajaya, involving Malaysian maritime services company KA Petra and Hong Kong-based port operator Hutchison Ports. KA Petra on its website says ship-to-ship transfer involves “cargo transfer operations between 2 seagoing vessels, either while stationary or underway.” The new hub will have man-made “dolphin” mooring structures to berth vessels without the need for piers or docks, and at lower costs for shippers. Hutchison Ports, which will take a 30 per cent stake in the project, is among the biggest port operators in the world and owns a stake in Port Klang. Tun Mahathir, asked at a news conference later, said the project won’t encroach into Singapore waters. Poon was flying with national carrier Singapore Airlines when she joined the first season of singing competition "Project SuperStar" in 2005. She finished second place behind Kelvin Tan. According to Taiwanese media reports, life has been difficult for the Singaporean singer who is currently based in Taiwan. Throughout her three years there, she has been living a life of frugality and despite this, the 26-year-old hardly has any savings to call her own. As a result, she has decided to pack her bags and return to being a Singapore girl. Poon who reportedly earned a monthly allowance of 80,000 Taiwan dollars (around S$4,000) at the start of her singing career, has had to bite the bullet and survive on a monthly expenditure of just 10,000 Taiwan dollars (around S$500). Hence, the singer has decided to work out an agreement with her agent to allow her to return to Singapore early next year. Yahoo news: Multi-billion-dollar charges linked to China rail chief A businesswoman linked to China's disgraced railway minister faces charges of illegal business activities worth 180 billion yuan ($29 billion), state-run media said Monday, indicating far vaster industry corruption than previously revealed. Ding Shumiao will face trial in Beijing for bribery and illegal business activities after she "intervened in bidding for dozens of railway projects", the China Daily reported, citing prosecutors. The scale of the charges is larger than anything prosecutors have previously linked to corruption associated with the railway sector in China, where the high-speed network, now the world's longest, has been a flagship development project of the ruling Communist Party. Former railway minister Liu Zhijun was given a suspended death sentence in July for accepting a total of 64.6 million yuan in bribes to help 11 people secure contracts and promotions. The China Daily said Ding was accused of giving Liu more than 49 million yuan and arranging sexual favours for him, while Liu helped 23 businesses recommended by her to win contracts for more than 50 rail projects, the China Daily said. The alleged total in inappropriate activities were equivalent to a quarter of China's entire national railway investment in 2010, it added. Liu was sacked in 2011 after eight years in the post and being celebrated as "father" of China's vastly expanded rail network. In March the railways ministry was disbanded, with its administrative functions handed to the transport ministry and its commercial role given to a new China Railway Corporation. Last week a top rail official Zhang Shuguang was charged with accepting bribes worth 47 million yuan over 11 years, while another senior figure Su Shunhu stood trial for allegedly receiving 24 million yuan in bribes. China's Communist leaders have vowed to crack down on rampant official corruption, which has stoked popular resentment. I recently came across the Project Binky build vids on youtube and the fabrication skill going into the build is amazing. The premise is the geniuses at Bad Obsession Motorsport are stuffing a full Celica GT-4 (ST185) drivetrain/suspension into a 1980 Austin Mini, and a rotted out old Mini at that. This probably won't appeal to everyone, but I'm sure some of you can appreciate the details that are going into the build. I found myself going PHWOARRRRR at some sections. Is China trying to muscle its capabilities in mega projects ? .... Yahoo news: China to Build High-Speed Railway Line from Beijing to US? China is considering building a 13,000km high-speed railway line that would run from Beijing to east coast US, according to official Chinese media. The line, creatively dubbed the China-Russia-Canada-America line, would begin in Beijing, travel north through Siberia, and under the Bering Strait to Alaska before heading south through Canada to reach its final - unspecified - destination in the United States, said the Beijing Times. The journey would take two days to complete if the train maintains its proposed average speed of 350km/h. Although talks are said to be in progress, it is not clear how the countries en route feel. Wang Meng-shu, a railway expert with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said there had been positive feedback. "We're already in discussions. Russia has already been thinking about this for many years," he said. According to China Daily, work has begun with the tunnel technology "already in place". The technology is already being used to build a high-speed railway between Fujian, on China's southeast coast, and Taiwan. The line would be 3,000km longer than the current largest railway line, the Trans-Siberian Railway, and 200km would be beneath the water in the Bering Strait between Russia and Alaska – four times longer than the submerged section of the Eurotunnel. "The project will be funded and constructed by China," the report added. "The details of this project are yet to be finalised." The Beijing Times has said the China-US line is just one of four proposals for huge cross-border railway projects. One is a line from the southwest city of Kunming to Singapore, another runs from China's Urumqi Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Turkey to Germany. Nobel prize winning author Ernest Hemingway's last car was a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible. Hemingway left the car on the island of Cuba before his suicide in 1961 and from then onwards, the vehicle has somehow disappeared from public view. Presumed to be lost, the car was found a couple of years back and now is the subject of an upcoming documentary about the car's history and ongoing restoration process. The New Yorker Convertible has been passed around between members of one family and there are plans to restore the car to its original condition. But, due to the United States trade embargo on Cuba, plans of restoring the car has come to a dead end. The United States trade embargo imposed on Cuba prohibits the trade of US made products to Cuba. The documentary follows actor David Soul as he tries to find a way around this embargo and get the car back on the road. David Soul is the actor who played the role of detective Kenneth Hutchinson in the television show Starsky and Hutch during the 1970s. After taking an interest in the restoration project, Soul's British passport enables him to supply the right car parts for the project and they hope that the car is able to be restored in time for the International Hemingway Colloquium which will be held in Havana in June 2013. Hi guys I'm currently based overseas and would like to ask whether the Changi Motorsports Hub development is still in progress.. have lost track of sg news already. From what I read last year the project was terminated because of some financial issues and they are looking for potential investors to takeover the project. Images of a car with a really low height have been circulating on the internet recently. The car may look like something you might buy from a toy store for a small child. But in fact, the car is allowed to be driven on the road and it has broken the Guinness World Record for being the lowest road worthy car. The car is known as the Mirai (which means future in Japanese) and it was built by a group of students and teachers from Japan. The Mirai measures just 45.2 centimetres off the ground and as mentioned above, it was entered into the 2013 Guinness World Record Book for being the lowest road worthy car. The Mirai was created and built by students and teachers from the Okayama Sanyo High School in Asakuchi, Japan. The students and teachers are from the automobile engineering department of the school. A total of nine teachers and twelve students spent several months planning on how to build the car and they took around one year to finally assemble it. The Nee Soon GRC MP bought a unit at upcoming condominium 91 Marshall for a sale price of $826,000. This was revealed in a Singapore Exchange filing by Tee International, in which she is an independent and non-executive director, on Wednesday. The filing said she was given a 2.4 per cent discount. Tee Homes, a wholly owned unit of Tee International, is developing the 30-unit freehold project in Katong. Based on the floor plans, Ms Lee's fourth-floor unit is a 570 sq ft two-bedder. This works out to a price of $1,449 per sq ft. Smaller apartments have become more popular in recent years, given the lower absolute price and a higher rent giving a better yield. The condo is near Dakota MRT station and has only one block offering units ranging from one-bedders to penthouses, which are on the fifth floor. The project is within walking distance of Tanjong Katong Primary School and is near places such as Parkway Parade and East Coast Park. Property agents said 91 Marshall, which is expected to be completed by 2016, is likely to be launched in the middle of this month. The show-flat is not ready yet. Ms Lee, being the interested person in this transaction, abstained from the audit committee's and board's review and approval process in respect of the proposed sale. The audit committee found that the number and terms of the proposed sale are 'fair and reasonable and are not prejudicial to the interests of the company and its minority shareholders'. The brand calls it the Crazy Car Project and the goal was to take one of the most fantastic Toyota models, the 2000GT and recreate it as a solar-powered version. This car is not actually identical to the original 2000GT, Toyota says that it is more streamlined than the original, although the differences are incredibly minor. Power comes from a lithium-ion battery. There is a solar panel mounted to the hood that recharges the battery. Toyota says that the car is capable of up to 200km/h with two passengers. The interior is outfitted entirely in Alcantara with lacquer panels in gold and silver. You see, i am a fan of remote control racing on and off in the past.... tried different 'cars' and engines (gas/electric). Most of my 'cars' COE expired liao... but unlike real cars, new ones are still affordable (especially the MiniZs i am eyeing now). This type is small but realistic (controls/steering and even bodyshapes.... its 1:27 scale, palm size, but the body details are almost as good as the die-cast display type) The shops have their indoor tracks, about $5 you can race the whole day!! But i have this sudden urge to build a 'portable/foldable' track at home and use a design i like (mimicking our F1 street circuit or Sepang etc). My living+dining space is not very big, but good enough if i put a few tables/seats i have to the side and may even run the track over them.... Spent today's morning using masking tapes to mark out the layout, so far so good. But I am not sure what type of carpet or textured/friction paint to use on the track made of plywood boards modules?? Any bros have some suggestions on the whole project, especially the choice of carpet / paints to give the tyres max grips? I know this is quite a niche project, but it will be my Xmas/NY project (i will pass the bills to my wife, she no need to buy me present, just pay) btw, I am eyeing a Lambor or Ferrari as my race car..... will go 'showroom' soon. thank you in advance... Hi, what do you guys think? will you go ahead to buy if it is cheap? Last time not many wish to sell the units there until last few weeks which has another suicide case again. There last one was 2008 if not wrong. Initially I always wanted to buy as it is near to my parents place. It is also the cheapest seaview unit u can get ( i think) both malaysia straits and the reservoir view.My wife and parents are very against the whole idea. One incident is already quite hard to accept but now there is another! I am not really a superstitious person. I always look forward in staying there. I guess I will have to shelf that idea for my family good.Sian!
