  1. Are E-Unicycles allowed on our roads? No, if you are wondering. Under the Active Mobility Act in 2019, only bicycles and e-bikes are allowed on the roads while the rest of these devices need to remain on footpath. But that's obviously not an issue to this errant powered-unicycle user spotted on the 19th of May 2021 around 11:14pm at the junction of Toa Payoh Lorong 4 and 5. The cam car driver was annoyed at this male user and high-beamed him when he turned into Toa Payoh Lorong 4. He beamed the e-unicycle rider again when he casually crossed the road as if he was a pedestrian, ignoring the camera car as he did so. Cool ah bro? Here's what netizens want to say on ROAD.sg's post...
  2. Walmart revealed earlier Sunday afternoon (Feb 17, 2014) its WAVE Concept semi trailer. WAVE stands for Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience and introduces the concept of a fuel efficient next generation semi-trailer that may in fact power the flow of goods and services for Walmart products and possibly the rest of the United States flow of commerce. The WAVE concept is the latest of Walmart fleet efficiency program. With over 7000 trucks, Walmart's fleet of vehicles provides a large opportunity to increase fuel efficiency across the board and set an example for the rest of the big box stores. First of all, the Wave concept truck has an advanced, one of a kind, set of aerodynamics that sets it apart from any semi-trailer on the road today. With its hybrid powertrain entirely underneath the cab, the front end design isn't dictated by a large internal combustion engine. The cab itself sits atop its powertrain and offers a sleek wind tunnel designed front drivers window that offers a commanding view of the road. The entire cab is tapered to blend into the trailer itself, which at fifty-three feet long, is entirely made out of carbon fibre paneling (an industry first). All this carbon fibre saves around two whole tons, which can go towards hauling more goods and services. Powering this technological tour-de-force is a Capstone Turbine engine coupled to an electrical powertrain. Capstone Turbines is a California based gas turbine manufacturer that specializes in microturbine power along with heating and cooling cogeneration systems. Key to the Capstone design is its use of foil bearings, which provides maintenance and fluid-free operation for the lifetime of the turbine and reduces the system to a single moving part. This also eliminates the need for any cooling or other secondary systems.Their light weight, small size, and quick starting time make them ideal as "instant-on" backup power to recharge the main batteries. An example of a hybrid vehicle is the Capstone CTM-380, with a 30 kW gas turbine generator running on diesel, that recharges Li-Poly batteries when necessary. The CMT-380 has a proposed range of 80 miles on battery alone, but when combined with the micro turbine that range is pushed to over 500+ miles. With just a video announcement being the first the public has heard about this project, we’re all ears as to what Wal-Mart will do with such a revolutionary design. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvt7ptICxSY
  3. Australian road safety researchers on Wednesday unveiled a pioneering "attention-powered car" which uses a headset to monitor brain activity and slow acceleration during periods of distraction. The car, commissioned by the Royal Automobile Club of Western Australia, is about to depart on an awareness-raising road trip of Western Australia -- a sprawling west coast state accounting for about one-third of the Australian continent. Lead researcher Geoffrey Mackellar, from neuroengineering company Emotiv, said the car's accelerator could be overridden by a headset with 14 sensors measuring the type and amount of brain activity which determined whether a driver was distracted. In the testing phase, drivers were set specific challenges such as using their mobile phone, switching channels on the radio, drinking water or reading a map so that researchers could record their brain activity while doing so. They were also sent on a 15 kilometres per hour "boredom lap" to see what happened when their brains "zoned out" -- "pretty nasty but we enjoyed it", Mackellar said. Emad Tahtouh, from production company FINCH, said the car used an array of neural inputs and specially-designed software to "go when you're paying attention and slow when you're not". "We're looking at things like blink rate, blink duration, gaze rate -- how long they look at a point -- eyes moving, head tilts, and also frequency of task-switching and the level of brain activity when they flick over to those tasks, so it's a huge pool of data," he said. "If someone lost attention and they switched tasks to, say, reading their mobile phone, or even if they just zoned out, it would usually be represented by a very sharp dip and sometimes very erratic behaviour." The car worked by reducing acceleration when it detected a loss of attention, and speeding back up once full focus was back on driving. The pilot vehicle, a customised Hyundai i40, was built for the RAC as part of a research and publicity campaign to reduce the number of road deaths in the state, which currently run above the national average and are the worst in Australia. Although the system could have potential commercial applications, the RAC said their current focus was on research and public awareness. "The impact of inattention is now comparable to the number of deaths and serious injuries caused by speed and drink driving," said RAC chief Pat Walker. "Nationally, it is estimated inattention was a factor in 46 per cent of fatal crashes." The Australian government estimates that road accidents cost the economy A$27 billion (US$25 billion) every year. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/techno...ers/825824.html
  4. Are these so called experts dumb or what? Cos diesel is not taxed, unlike petrol... DUH!!!
  5. This vehicle should be a good solution as a mini taxi for use within Singapore housing estates
  6. Japan's best-known toilet maker on Wednesday unveiled a "poop-powered" motorcycle that can travel as far as 300km on a tank filled with animal waste. Billed as the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in place of a regular seat and huge paper roll at the back. But as a young female model climbed aboard for a test drive Wednesday, toilet giant TOTO was quick to point out that she would not supply the "gas". "The biogas it uses as fuel is not made from human waste. It's made from livestock waste and sewage," Kenji Fujita, a company spokesman, told reporters in a Tokyo suburb. 8. Doing a Poll. I have always been told NEVER turn the powered steering wheel while stationary to avoid excessive wear and tear on the components. But from my observation, it seems that many don't subscribe to this anymore. Is this not applicable anymore?
  9. I was expressing my interest in an STi for jaunts up north, to Sepang and as well as for touring Peninsular Malaysia in general. But some of my colleagues (performance car drivers among them) said that TC cannot sustain cruising for high speeds for long duration. Is this true? I mean, I'm sure this applies for running at close to max speed and at max boost but how about reasonable speeds like about 160-180km/h? nowhere near top speed. In any case, there's plenty of air being forced into the radiator and whatnot at that kind of speed. not to mention the huge air scoop on the bonnet. I know an STi is not the perfect car for touring, but the question is, why can't it do the job? Or are my colleagues mistaken? I intend to mod it a bit when I get mine, nothing too extreme, maybe 400+bhp will be more than enuff. I'm not gunning for monster drag car. besides, tires are expensive
  10. Anyone out there with the WHO, HOW, WHAT, WHEN , WHERE of nuclear power car? Sounds crazy, maybe. No need refuel, engine( reactor) very small is enough. maybe size of 1.5L petbottle. But....... when CRASH....... NUDE...Leak...
  11. In the past people used to install turbo timers for their turbocharged engines, in the fear of the engine and turbos not cooling down sufficiently. Is this gadget still required for modern turbo cars? Not talking about the big turbos of the WRX and Evolution, but the smaller turbos of Saab, Audi, Volvo. Just ordered an A4 1.8 TFSI and am wondering if it is necessary to install a turbo timer... because I don't like to wait in the car for it to cool down... I know the A4 turbo is not like a performance rocket like an EVO so please don't laugh at me Also, is it necessary to warm a turbocharged engine up in the morning before driving off? I normally don't do that to my Merc V6 and it runs perfectly fine but dunno whether it is important to do that for the A4? Thanks!
  12. July 7, 2008 BMW unveils new 7-series limo way ahead of S'pore launch By Christopher Tan A BMW spokesman told The Straits Times the new BMW 7-series (above) would arrive in Singapore as early as first-quarter of next year. -- PHOTO: BMW GERMAN car-maker BMW Ag has released details of its latest 7-series limo, four months before its launch in Europe and at least six months before it is due in Singapore. The new car, a direct competitor to Mercedes' S-class and Jaguar's XJ, looks little changed from the current generation 7-series except for being slightly larger and for its less fanciful headlamps and more elegant tail-lights. It is packed with new features, including those designed for fuel efficiency. The car can, for instance, charge its battery while braking. Unlike existing cars, it will stop charging the battery or turn off the aircon compressor when extra power is needed for acceleration. Lightweight aluminium is used for its roof, doors, bonnet and side panels. Other new features, which may be standard or optional for Singapore-bound cars, include a night vision system that can identify pedestrians; and a front side-view camera to help driver merge with traffic on a main road from partially blocked driveways or side lanes - a first for BMW. A BMW spokesman told The Straits Times the car would arrive in Singapore as early as first-quarter of next year. He said a range of new diesel variants will also be made available for the first time here, including a new all-aluminium 3.0-litre version that produces 245hp at 4,000rpm and 540Nm of torque from merely 1,750rpm. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...75.html?vgnmr=1 There has been a discussion on the new 7-er in the conti folder but this one highlights the last para. [/color] It couldn't be more timely. Diesel engines are now more efficient and greener than their petrol counterparts. Nonetheless, with diesel price heading north like there is no tomorrow, buyers need a buy-in before parting with their moolah. Apart from cheaper maintenance and durability factors, it makes almost no sense to purchase diesel cars. Will we now witness government relaxing tax structure on diesel-powered powerplants? (this means a cut in their revenue)...

  17. The future is high on lithium Last Updated: 12:01am BST 09/06/2007 Lithium-ion battery-powered cars came a step closer this week, writes Andrew English American giant General Motors signed development contracts with two companies (Compact Power of Michigan and Continental of Germany) for the advanced development of lithium-ion batteries for its hybrid electric Volt concept. GM hopes to have the Volt, which has its drive train mounted on the chassis rails from the Astra hatchback, on sale by 2012. "The first Volt to go on sale will be the fuel-cell version," said Dr Christopher Borroni-Bird, GM's director of advanced technology, who warned that without government incentives to consumers such technology might be still born. "We can't go on subsidising this business forever," he said. At the same time, Mitsubishi UK MD Jim Tyrrell has confirmed he has asked for 3,000 lithium-ion versions of the Mitsubishi "i" to come to Britain when it goes on sale in 2010. (The petrol-powered "i" goes on sale this summer.) The battery-powered "i" will dispense with the heavy in-rear-wheel motors on the concept car and use a simpler single motor, driving the front wheels. "They will test the car in Tokyo from August," says Tyrrell. "They hadn't planned to sell in Europe until I told them about the congestion charges." So does this mean the fuel cell is dead? Yes, if you believe Ricardo CEO Dave Shemmans. "Battery cars will overtake fuel cells; even the Japanese think that," he said. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.j...09/mnvolt09.xml mitsubishi r tied with Yuasa on the new battery development. mitsu own sista company MHI r also developing newer batteries for cars.

  20. Hi folks, Would appreciate advice from anyone who has had experience with any DAB - Mobile Receiver powered via cigarette lighter socket - any recommendations? Thanks! I went to varius places - only mobile devices I could find are those that are powered by 6 volts of power. Our cars are supplying 12v, understand that can only step down to 9v minimum. Anyone has a solution? Or any recommendations.

  24. Further evidence of platform and parts sharing will be on display at the upcoming Geneva Autosalon. Ford's Focus ST it seems will make use of the S40/V50 T-5 engine, while a production version of last year's Focus Vignale concept will also be shown. A front-wheel drive Focus with great-looking body work and Volvo's potent T-5 engine appears to be a smart package that should surely be successful in Europe - the only market the car is confirmed for sale in at this time. More significant for Volvo owners, the Ford's use of the engine means a higher attraction for the engine-tuning aftermarket with more potential targets for their upgrades. Even better, the top-of-the-line Focus RS might have a factory-developed Volvo motor of even higher output levels - hinting at potential R models on the S40 and V50 from Gothenburg or at least in the hands of someone with the stomache to perform an engine swap. Also significant is the appearance of a production version of the Focus Vignale Concept from last year. P1-based, with folding hardtop and Pinninfarina sound familiar? It should, all these details have also been confirmed on the upcoming Volvo C70 replacement, making the Vignale an indication on the potential of the P1 platform and the technology that'll be used on the new Volvo droptop.
