If you're planning to travel, some things you might want to consider. Indonesia's Batik Air faces probe after pilots fall asleep mid-flight The Batik Air plane briefly veered off course but was able to land safely Indonesia is investigating local carrier Batik Air after both pilots were found to have fallen asleep for 28 minutes mid-flight. The two men - who have both been temporarily suspended - fell asleep during a flight on 25 January from Sulawesi to the capital Jakarta. One of them was reportedly tired from helping care for his newborn twins. The Airbus A320 briefly veered off course but landed safely, with all 153 passengers and crew members unharmed. The 32-year-old pilot had told his co-pilot to take control of the aircraft about half an hour after take off, saying he needed to rest. The 28-year-old co-pilot agreed, according to a report from the transport ministry. But the co-pilot inadvertently fell asleep as well. According to the report, he had been helping his wife look after their one-month-old twin babies. Jakarta air traffic control tried contacting the cockpit of the Batik Air A320 after their last recorded transmission but received no response. That radio silence lasted 28 minutes until the lead pilot woke up and realised that his co-pilot had also fallen asleep. He also found that the aircraft had briefly veered off course. The pilots then responded to calls from Jakarta and landed the plane safely. Medical tests before the flight deemed that the men were fit to fly. Their blood pressure and heart rate were normal and alcohol tests came back negative. But while the pilots appeared to be fully rested, the tests failed to determine whether the quality of their rest was good, aviation expert Alvin Lie told BBC Indonesian. Authorities have now "strongly reprimanded" Batik Air over the incident, with Indonesia's head of air transport, M Kristi Endah Murni, saying that Batik Air should pay more attention to their crew's rest time. Batik Air has said it "operates with adequate rest policy" and that it was "committed to implement all safety recommendations". In 2019, the same airline was forced to have an emergency landing after the pilot fainted. Aviation regulations in most countries require at least two pilots to be present in the cockpit of commercial airliners.

What do most modern performance cars have in common? If you answered Michelin tires then you’re on the correct track. Every time a new high-performance car debuts it seems more and more common to see a set of bespoke set of Michelin tires as part of the build package. Based on a press release by Michelin Japan we get a glimpse into Michelin’s quest to improve upon the best tire on earth the current Michelin PS 4S tire with the all-new Michelin Pilot Sport 5. In recent years tires have gained a lot more respect. Sure a new set of tires isn’t as exciting as an ECU tune, or a new set of coilovers, but a good set of tires can transform your car’s driving experience. Good tires can improve every measurable metric of your car’s performance and they’re the only part of your car that’s supposed to touch the ground. That means all the engineering that goes into your car’s construction relies on the tires to perform. Now that we’re established the importance of tires why does the new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 stand out? Well based on qualitative data and quantitative information from years of reviews, many agree that the current Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is the best tire on the market. The new Michelin Pilot Sport 5 improved upon the Pilot Sport 4S in both quantitative testing and qualitative feedback. The new Pilot Sport 5 is 1.7% seconds faster than the Pilot Sport 4S on a wet lap on Michelin’s test track. In addition to the wet performance, the Pilot Sport 5 is 1.5% faster than its predecessor on a dry lap. The New Pilot Sport 5 press release isn’t just about numbers either. Michelins goes into detail about how they improved the feel of these new tires, which should result in even more driving pleasure. We can’t wait to try these out.

https://mothership.sg/2023/02/harbour-pilot-died-psa-marine/ A harbour pilot from PSA Marine (PSAM) died after falling overboard while disembarking from a tugboat to board a PSAM launch boat in waters off Singapore's Southern Islands. The pilot's body was recovered after nearly 9 hours The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said in a statement that its Marine Safety Control Centre was alerted to the incident at about 2:50am on Saturday (Feb. 11). The pilot was wearing a lifejacket at the time of the incident, MPA added. MPA, Police Coast Guard (PCG) and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) immediately deployed patrol and emergency response craft to the scene to conduct search and rescue operations. MPA also activated divers to conduct an underwater search for the missing pilot and issued navigational safety broadcasts to the surrounding vessels to support the search efforts. At about 11:30am on the same day, the body of the pilot was recovered and conveyed to PCG Brani Base. Investigations are ongoing, said MPA.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/housing/pods-set-up-in-void-decks-to-cater-to-requests-for-conducive-work-study-spaces For the full article, please click on the above link. SINGAPORE – Housing estates and community spaces throughout Singapore will see more work-study pods for residents to use, if ongoing pilots in several neighbourhoods show a strong uptake. These pods, which are portable enclosed cubicles that can seat one to two, can provide a conducive and more private environment for residents to work near their homes, said Minister for National Development Desmond Lee on Sunday. Although existing study areas in void decks continue to be well-used, Mr Lee said: “(Needs) evolve and change for students as well as working adults for more privacy, especially when they make more confidential calls or business calls. Three pods each were installed in the void decks of Block 183C Boon Lay Avenue, Block 260 Boon Lay Drive and Block 674B Jurong West Street 65, as part of a year-long pilot lasting till end July next year. The pilot – a collaboration among the Housing Board, People’s Association and pod provider Burztech – is the first involving pods installed at void decks. Pods in ongoing pilots in Clementi, Bukit Timah and Keat Hong that were launched last November and December are in common areas of community centres, or within Residents’ Committee centres. The nine pods in Boon Lay, which began operation in August, are air-conditioned and soundproof, with two power sockets and Wi-Fi connectivity provided. Some 5,000 residents, including 100 students, are expected to benefit. Burztech’s app, which is used to make bookings up to two weeks in advance and open pod doors, currently has more than 2,000 users, said co-founder Joel Leong. The firm charges six cents a minute in Boon Lay, in a launch promotion till Oct 10, before prices rise to seven-and-a-half cents a minute. The People’s Association said the initiative arose following residents’ requests for a quiet working space amid the pandemic and that the pods may be set up in more estates if the pilots are successful. Among those set to benefit in Boon Lay are 25 lower-income students, who on Sunday were each given 35 hours of credit worth over $150 – sponsored by the Boon Lay Community Development and Welfare Fund – to cover their usage till December. Mr Kevin Goh, a first-year electrical and electronics engineering diploma student at Singapore Polytechnic, is one of them. The 21-year-old said the chirping from more than 20 birds his father, a school bus driver in his 60s, keeps as pets has been a distraction. “There is definitely a lot of noise from my house; the TV, the birds – everything adds up together. Even if I close my bedroom door, I can still hear them,” said Mr Goh. His family includes his security officer mother, who is in her 50s, and a brother, 19, an Institute of Technical Education student. Mr Leong said though pandemic restrictions have eased, the need for such pods remains as hybrid and work-from-home arrangements are here to stay. Mr Leong said Burztech is keenly awaiting the results from the Boon Lay pilot, as this is the first time users have to pay to use its pods. “Everybody wants to come when it’s free, but we don’t know what if it’s not free.”

Dear all, We can soon see Michelin sport 4. http://tyresearch.telegraph.co.uk/r-new-tyres-advice/the-michelin-pilot-sport-4-on-show-at-frankfurt-27847 The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 on show at Frankfurt New tyres Tyre manufacturer Michelin is showcasing its new sports tyre, the Pilot Sport 4, at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. A much anticipated tyre that is up against some keen competition. Michelin’s long-awaited new summer sports tyre, the Pilot Sport 4, is finally on show at the Frankfurt Motor Show. - Copyright © : Michelin On the same topic Michelin launches it new sports tyre, the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 Continental SportContact 6: Rezulteo’s test Firestone Multiseason, an all season tyre for city cars Competition in the sport’s tyre segment is rife, while Continental has just launched the SportContact 6, Michelin is currently presenting the latest addition to its Pilot Sport range at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Pilot Sport range has earned a solid reputation, especially for its most versatile version which until now was the Pilot Sport 3, a tyre available on the market since 2010. To ensure continuity, the PS4 goes even further than its predecessor offering significant progress in several areas, mainly thanks to Michelin’s experience in racing. Driving pleasure Logically, the Pilot Sport 4 places the emphasis on driving sensations and pure efficiency. For this, its structure features a reinforced belt to keep any tyre deformation to a minimum and, as a result, improves driving precision, dynamic response and of course, the level of pure grip. Copyright © : Michelin Geared towards safety The PS4 is a tyre designed to equip passenger cars. As such, it must deliver an excellent level of safety in all weather conditions. Its new tread compound has been developed with this in mind, just like its wide grooves providing efficient water evacuation. However, the brief presentation did not provide any further information about this new Michelin tyre. We hope to compare it with other reference tyres in the high performance segment in the near future to truly evaluate its potential. Let’s hope it achieves its efficiency. Availability The Pilot Sport 4 will be available on the market in January 2016, and initially, only in 17- and 18-inch sizes. New sizes will be available later, and in particular, 19-inch sizes. TAIPEI: A Taiwanese air force pilot was killed and another was missing on Monday (Mar 22) after their fighter jets disappeared in a suspected mid-air collision off the island's southern coast, officials said. The two F-5E jets disappeared from radar around 3pm (0700 GMT) around 2.6km off the coast of rural Pingtung county, the National Rescue Command Centre said. They were among four F-5Es that took off around 30 minutes earlier for a routine training mission, the centre said, adding helicopters and coastguard ships had joined the search. One of the pilots was found unconscious in the sea but could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at hospital. Rescuers were still searching for the remaining pilot. Police confirmed they found a seat with parachute attached on a local highway. The apparent collision was the third such incident in the past half year, at a time when the Beijing-claimed island's armed forced are under increasing pressure to intercept Chinese aircraft on an almost daily basis. While Taiwan's air force is well-trained and well-equipped, mostly with US-made equipment, it is dwarfed by China's. Beijing views the democratic island as its own territory and has never renounced the use of force to bring it under Chinese control. The official Central News Agency said the air force had now grounded the F-5 fleet that operates from the Chihhang air base, where the aircraft are based. The US-built F-5 fighters first entered service in Taiwan in the late 1970s and have been mostly been retired from front-line activities, though some are still used for training and as a back-up for the main fleet. Another F-5 crashed in October, killing the pilot. The following month a much more modern F-16 crashed off Taiwan's east coast, whose pilot also died. In January of last year, Taiwan's top military official was among eight people killed after a helicopter carrying them to visit soldiers crashed in a mountainous area near the capital Taipei. The incidents have raised concern about both training and maintenance, but also the pressure the air force is under to respond to repeated Chinese flights near the island. Taiwan's Defence Ministry has warned Chinese aircraft, including drones, are flying repeatedly in Taiwan's air defence identification zone, seeking to wear out Taiwan's air force.

This caught my attention. I prefer a lighter wallet. If I can pay for my MRT rides using my credit card, even better. So this caught my attention. LTA starting a pilot. There are a few steps to follow, and the website brings you through. Basically you have to register and link to your Mastercard. After I did everything and set up, decided to try out. It works! Here is a video of my experience. Overall very smooth but a few points to take note. 1. Mastercard, not VISA. Mine is UOB, but all other Singapore issued Mastercards should work. 2. The MRT gate says 'Bank Card Usage' when you enter and exit. The gate doesn't show you how much was the cost of the ride. 3. You have to check your portal to see what was incurred, and it may take up to 3 days for the charges to be reflected. Overall, easy to use and I will be using my Mastercard to pay for my MRT and Bus rides from now on.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/rsaf-woman-helicopter-pilot-sues-cabby-for-at-least-4m-after-wrist-injury-in-accident?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook&xtor=CS1-10#Echobox=1535985205 I don't think this is healthy at all if judge approved the damages that the RSAF pliot want to get from cabby due to cabby negligence in beating red light. Imagine if Judge approved, we maybe following USA footstep where a simple fall in Mcdonald due to floor is wet and Mcdonald can get sued for few millions in dollar. Not healthy at all. So hope judge to reject the 4million in damages and injuries but maybe instead only approved say 20k due to cabby is also wrong in the 1st place by beating red light. So the cabby also need to bare some consequences.

Kinky pilot............ https://sg.news.yahoo.com/pilot-sentenced-groping-teenage-girl-flight-203048028.html SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former Utah airline pilot was sentenced Wednesday to more than two years in prison for groping a 14-year-old girl in the seat next to him during an off-duty flight. Michael James Pascal, 46, of Park City, appeared in federal court Wednesday in Salt Lake City. He wore a navy blue suit and had close-cropped hair. "Whatever the sentence is, I will accept it," he told the judge, saying he hoped to be a good father during his time in prison. On the October 2013 Delta Airlines flight, the teenager awoke from a nap and felt Pascal's hand under her, gripping her buttocks, she said, according to court documents. She elbowed him and yelled, "What the hell are you doing?" the records show. Earlier, she said, she had pushed down the armrest between them but when she woke up, someone had pushed it upright, she said. Pascal pulled his hand out from under her, she recounted, saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I was asleep, I have to use the bathroom." Pascal told investigators he fell asleep with his hands in his lap and couldn't recall where his hand was when he awoke. He said he had lifted the armrest between him and the girl because the man on his other side was taking up a lot of room. His attorney Rhome Zabriskie maintained that any contact was inadvertent and that Pascal was asleep. "When he woke up, he realized he had kind of flopped over on the passenger next to him," he said when Pascal was charged in 2013. The girl, who was flying alone on the Detroit to Salt Lake City flight, told attendants and changed seats. She said Pascal earlier in the flight helped her retrieve a blanket from the flight crew after he saw she was on crutches. After she moved, she said, she saw Pascal looking at her in an "annoyed" manner, court documents show. Pascal lost his job with a regional airline carrier, a Delta Airlines contractor, when he was charged in 2013. In March, a jury convicted him on two counts of abusive sexual contact related to the incident. "He has suffered an awful lot and it will continue," Zabriskie said Wednesday. Pascal has an 18-year-old daughter of his own and maintained that he was asleep. Delta on Wednesday deferred comment to an ExpressJet Airlines spokeswoman who said the company does not comment on previous employees. Delta last year told The Associated Press that it cooperated with investigators but had no other comment. U.S. District Judge Dale Kimball ordered Pascal to turn himself in on Sept. 30. He is set to serve his sentence in Colorado, where he has family, and to serve 60 months of probation afterward. The order also puts him on the sex offender registry.

This photo taken on Thursday, Oct 10, 2013, shows Japanese auto giant Toyota Motor demonstrating its pre-collision system which uses automatic steering in addition to automatic braking to prevent collisions, in Tokyo. Toyota on Friday, Oct 11, 2013, unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel. Toyota on Friday unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an auto pilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions and also keep to the middle of the road, all without drivers touching the wheel. The Japanese giant autos using the self-driving technology could be available on the market in just a few years' time. "These advanced driving support technologies prevent human errors, reduce driving stress and help drivers avert accidents, which has a big potential to reduce the number of traffic deaths," Toyota managing director Moritaka Yoshida said at a presentation in Tokyo. Leading automakers and technology firms, including Toyota, rival Nissan and Internet giant Google, have been working on self-driving and assisted-driving technology for years. Toyota, the world's biggest automaker, said that while drivers would still need to be alert and take part in the driving process, it essentially lets them put the vehicle on auto-pilot, leaving most of the work to the computer system. The Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA) system lets vehicles communicate wirelessly to avoid running into each other while keeping the car in the middle of the road lane -- no matter how many twists and turns lie ahead. "Cars with these technologies recognise the accelerating or slowing speed of those ahead, which also helps avoid traffic jams," said project manager Mitsuhisa Shida. "They can wirelessly exchange data once every 0.1 seconds." The company plans to install AHDA in its commercial models over the next few years. Toyota has already introduced the pre-collision braking assist system in its Lexus luxury sedan and plans to install it in other models by 2015, with the other technologies to follow. Many cars already have systems that gives drivers a panoramic view to keep watch for nearby objects while parking itself. The latest collision-avoidance system has doubled the detection time of oncoming objects to four seconds from a previous two seconds, Toyota added. The automaker said such advances would be especially helpful for older people. Japan's society is rapidly ageing with over-65s already making up around a quarter of the 128 million-strong population. Hi folks, Anyone here have a private pilot's license? I remember there used to be a youth flying club but dunno much. Read up and happen to find that the Seletar Flying Club offers flying lessons to get a license. I was actually interested in learning but the price is pretty steep, the membership alone is $1K with $100+ every month. Calculated based on the flying rate stated, prepare to spend around 20K before you get your license. :( Can I still fly if I wear glasses? I know Airforce/Airline is a no no but private plane more relaxed right? I know MCF got many rich folks out there... anyone got license? How about plane ownership/maintenance? Get gian to take up, but the one $$$$$

"Attention all passengers. Is there a pilot or anyone capable of flying a A320 in which we are in right now? Kindly step forward to be identified please. And concerning the ruckus you witnessed earlier, do not be alarmed as it is just one of our crew members having a rough day that's all. Thank you for your attention and please continue to enjoy the rest of the flight." Imagine hearing this especially if you are first time taking a plane... ...& that you are on board this JetBlue plane. From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1191895/1/.html US pilot charged after mid-flight meltdown Posted: 29 March 2012 0524 LAS VEGAS, Nevada: A US pilot has been charged with interfering with a flight crew after a dramatic mid-flight breakdown in which he screamed about terrorists and 9/11, officials said on Wednesday. Clayton Osbon, 49, had to be restrained by a number of male passengers after Tuesday's incident, in which a JetBlue plane from New York to Las Vegas made an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas. "Several passengers assisted and brought Osbon down in the forward galley, where he continued to yell comments about Jesus, Sept. 11, Iraq, Iran and terrorists," said an affidavit giving a blow-by-blow account of the flight. The first officer then "declared an emergency and diverted the aircraft to Amarillo, landing with passengers still restraining Osbon," said the document cited by US Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Sarah R. Saldana. Footage filmed with cell phone cameras and broadcast on US television showed chaos at the front of the plane, as male passengers scrambled to help restrain the pilot, who could be heard shouting hysterically. Between four and six passengers had to sit on him for up to 20 minutes as the plane, which was three and a half hours into its flight, made an emergency landing, witnesses said. According to the affidavit, the pilot, who had shown no previous sign of mental problems, had arrived late for the flight, and began behaving erratically soon after the plane took off from New York's Kennedy airport. "As the plane was leaving JFK and climbing in altitude in its scheduled five-hour flight, Osbon said something to the first officer (FO) about being evaluated by someone, but the FO did not know what he meant. "Osbon then talked about his church and the need to 'focus' and asked the FO to take the controls and work the radios. Osbon began talking about religion, but, according to the FO, his statements were not coherent." The first officer became particularly concerned when Osbon said "things just don't matter," and "yelled over the radio to air traffic control and instructed them to be quiet," according to the affidavit. Osbon then "turned off the radios in the aircraft, dimmed his monitors and sternly admonished the FO for trying to talk on the radio. "When Osbon said 'We need to take a leap of faith,' the FO stated that he became very worried. Osbon told the FO that 'We're not going to Vegas,' and began giving what the FO described as a sermon." The first officer then suggested they invite an off-duty JetBlue captain who was on board into the cockpit, at which point the captain abruptly left to go to the forward lavatory. When Osbon came out of the lavatory, he began talking to flight attendants, mentioning "150 souls on board." "Osbon walked to the rear of the aircraft but along the way stopped and asked a male passenger if he had a problem. Osbon then sprinted back to the forward galley and tried to enter his code to re-enter the cockpit," it said. At that point, the first officer used the public address system to issue an order to restrain Osbon. In response, a number of passengers - many of whom were well-built men heading to a security industry convention in Las Vegas - piled onto the captain, and sat on him for the rest of the flight. Once on the tarmac, TV footage showed the pilot being taken off the plane on a stretcher in Amarillo, where passengers spent several hours before continuing their interrupted flight to the desert gambling city. JetBlue's chief executive Dave Barger paid tribute to the quick-thinking first officer, as well as the passengers who helped pin the captain down. "That was a tough situation at altitude. The customers, the crew, just did a great job," he told NBC television's "Today Show" programme. "That was a true team effort at 35,000 feet (10,000 kilometres) yesterday." "I've known the captain personally for a long period of time. There's been no indication of this at all in the past," Barger said. - AFP/de

LINK SHANGHAI : A Chinese pilot's refusal to give up his landing slot to a passenger plane that issued a distress call to say it was running out of fuel almost caused a disaster, state media reported Thursday. China's privately-owned Juneyao Airlines confirmed that one of its pilots refused to give way when a Qatar Airways plane contacted air traffic controllers at Hongqiao airport, asking permission to land immediately. The pilot of the Qatar plane said it had just five minutes' worth of fuel left after it was diverted from Shanghai, the Global Times newspaper reported, adding that a disastrous accident was only narrowly averted. The Qatar plane was travelling from Doha to Shanghai when it was ordered to divert due to a thunderstorm on August 13. Air traffic controllers in Hongqiao, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Shanghai, ordered the Juneyao pilot to circle the airport and allow the Qatar plane to land first, but the pilot refused. The Global Times said the Juneyao pilot claimed he had been waiting "a long time" and needed to land "right now", citing comments posted online. Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines, which was founded in 2005, said the pilot and crew had been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, but that the "rumours on the Internet are far from the truth". "It remains doubtful whether the fuel on the Qatar Airways plane was really fewer than five minutes," the paper quoted a spokeswoman as saying. "And why didn't it inform the tower controller earlier?" At one point, the two aircraft came perilously close for there to be a risk of collision, according to an aviation forum quoted in The Global Times. "A Mayday is rare and means the plane is in an extreme emergency and may even face the danger of a crash," the paper quoted an unnamed senior air traffic control official as saying. China's civil aviation authority said in a statement it was investigating the incident and those responsible would be "severely punished". The Qatar plane landed safely after the incident. - AFP/ir

Hi guys, Appreciate some feedback on this tyre. How does it fare in the comfort department and are noise levels similar to that of PP2? Tyre shop said models brought in by local agent are made in Thailand while "PI" models are made in various EU countries? Also considering Toyo C1S, Goodyear Excellence and Conti CPC2. Thanks.

We have one bus/coach driver, one train driver, etc. So one pilot should be ok lah! Last time fly plane got many checks and instruments to worry about, now all easy to check and control by one person. http://gizmodo.com/5634864/airline-wants-f...se-of-emergency A low-cost airline wants flight attendants to fly airplanes in case of emergency. The reason: Having two pilots in the cockpit is too expensive. That's great, because I really can't wait to see Steven Slater landing a 747 at JFK. The father of the idea is none other than Michael O'Leary, the CEO of Ryanair, the most famous low-cost airline in Europe. O'Leary does a lot of seemingly stupid things, but he's a very smart man too. In this case, he may be completely right too. Authorities and aircraft manufacturers are actually looking into this. Embraer is planning to have a one-pilot-only commercial jetliner by 2020, and General Electric and Lockheed Martin are actively working in incorporating remote control capabilities
