A fire and explosion occurred early on Friday morning (April 12) at the Petronas Pengerang Integrated Complex oil and gas facility in Johor, The Star reported. According to a statement by national oil firm Petronas, the incident took place at 1.25am. An emergency and fire response team was deployed and contained the fire within 30 minutes. "The situation is under control and all relevant authorities have been informed," it said. "We will provide additional information in due course, as the investigation is still being carried out." Comments on social media have suggested that the blast could be felt by residents of nearby residential areas and as far off as Pasir Gudang. Mercedes-Benz Japan recently revealed a new special limited edition of its A-Class premium hatchback. Called the 'A 45 AMG 4MATIC PETRONAS Green Edition', it features special exterior/interior designs available under the customisation program from the AMG Performance Studio. Available only in Calcite white, only 30 of these limited edition cars will be produced for the Japanese market. Differences to the normal A 45 AMG are mainly cosmetic. Its front-end areas, exterior mirrors, rear spoiler, headlamp units, wheel hub caps, and other details are painted in PETRONAS green - the special shade normally reserved for the Mercedes AMG PETRONAS FORMULA ONE® car. Malaysian state energy firm Petronas said Monday net profit fell 34 percent in the third quarter and warned of challenging times ahead due to global economic uncertainty. Profit at Malaysia's biggest company dipped to 15.6 billion ringgit ($5.2 billion) in the three months to December 31, compared to 23.7 billion in the corresponding period a year before. Petronas attributed the drop to a higher base of comparison in the third quarter of 2010 due to one-off gains from the listing of two subsidiaries that amounted to 9.2 billion ringgit. Petronas said cumulative profit for the nine months to December 31 was 10.6 percent higher than the same period a year earlier, reaching 55.6 billion ringgit due mainly to higher crude oil prices and sales. Revenue for the period rose 26.9 percent to 222.80 billion ringgit. But Petronas president and CEO Shamsul Azhar Abbas warned that this year and next would be tough due to uncertainties in crude oil prices on the back of Europe's economic woes and lower expected crude production. "Europe is going into a recession. Demand from BRIC economies -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- is going to be weak," he told reporters, adding that "geo-political tensions in the Middle East" were also clouding the outlook. The next two years would "not be as strong as we have seen last year as the current crude oil prices won't last long," he added. Shamsul said crude oil prices were expected to hover at between $85 to $90 per barrel this year -- compared to around $110 currently -- before rebounding in 2014. Shamsul said Petronas would continue to focus on domestic exploration in deepwater areas and on re-exploration in marginal fields as it faces depleting oil and gas reserves in the country. Crude output was expected to be lower in 2012 due to depletion, he said. "Our challenge is going to be in production," he said. Petronas -- Malaysia's only Fortune 500 company -- contributes almost half of the country's budget revenues. Although the recent quarter was the third of the fiscal year, Petronas has ended the financial year on December 31 as part of an adjustment that will see its new financial year start from January 1 from now on.

FYI just came back from JB, there are notices that all petronas petrol station and CNG (NGV) stations will be closed from 4.30am to 11.30am on 10 sept 2010 for the Raya prayer, the stations will open from 11.30am. those planning to go in please take note. not so sure about other petrol stations tho, did not see any notice.

Three other teams were in the running to secure the sponsorship backing of the state-owned Malaysian oil company Petronas in 2010. Vice president of corporate services Ahmad Nizam Salleh revealed that, as well as considering staying with Sauber, Petronas looked into supporting Williams or Lotus. Ultimately, Petronas signed a long term deal to become title sponsor at Mercedes GP, although Salleh told the Bernama news agency that the sponsorship will be reviewed "from year to year for the next five years". "Four teams were short-listed -- Williams, Sauber, Mercedes and Lotus," he is quoted as saying by The Star newspaper at Mercedes' livery launch in Stuttgart earlier this week. "But Mercedes offered the best package and what they asked for was quite attractive," Sallah added. He said the decision to sign with Mercedes was made before Michael Schumacher agreed to return to F1 this year with the German marque. "Schumacher's return makes for bigger visibility and it is an unexpected mileage for us," said Salleh. "We heard rumours that he was thinking of coming back to F1 when we started the negotiations, but he was still attached to another team (Ferrari) and we had no inkling at that point that he was signing up," he added.
