  8. SINGAPORE - Singapore billionaire Peter Lim has made a "significant investment" in UK-based sports car maker McLaren Automotive, the company said. Mr Lim, who earned the nickname "Remisier King" in the city-state, has joined McLaren Automotive's board with immediate effect. Forbes Asia recently ranked him No 8 on Singapore's rich list, with an estimated fortune of US$1.8 billion (S$2.17 billion) built mainly from investments. "Peter Lim's track record in Asia as a highly respected business leader adds further quality to our board in this highly competitive business environment at an exciting time for the company," McLaren Automotive and McLaren Group executive chairman Ron Dennis said in a statement. The company said demand for its new McLaren sports car, the MP4-12C, is strong with retailers in the Asia Pacific region confirming orders that account for around 18 months of production. The McLaren Group also runs a Formula 1 team. Last year, Mr Lim made a

  11. SINGAPORE - The Court of Appeal on Wednesday ordered the owners of Raffles Town Club (RTC) to pay private investor Peter Lim $210,000 in damages. Mr Lim had won a defamation suit against RTC owners Lin Jian Wei and Margaret Tung in October last year. The amount is the highest awarded to a non-political figure in Singapore and is three times the $70,000 damages Mr Lin and Ms Tung argued should be paid. The previous record was $150,000 awarded to lawyer Arul Chandran in a libel case. In his judgment, Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong disagreed with Mr Lin and Ms Tung that the defamation - stemming from the RTC fiasco - was not serious. "Not only did the respondents deliberately and knowingly use the court process to defame the appellant, in the process misleading the court in order to protect their own investment in the company, they also pleaded the defence of justification unjustifiably and refused to tender any apology or make amends," he wrote. He noted that Mr Lim is a prominent businessman and investor who built up a formidable reputation in the stock broking industry as the "Remisier King", and was frequently cited as one of the richest men in Singapore and Asia. The defamatory remarks "attacked his professional reputation and standing (and) called into question his competence, integrity and business acumen", the Chief Justice added. A very pleased Mr Lim said he was matching the damages dollar-for-dollar and donating the total of $420,000 to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. source http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1072047/1/.html
  12. BILLIONAIRE investor Peter Lim has won his defamation suit against the main shareholders of Raffles Town Club (RTC), after the Court of Appeal ruled in his favour on Thursday. The stunning verdict is likely to lead to a big payout to Mr Lim as the court also ordered the defendants - Mr Lin Jian Wei and Ms Margaret Tung - to pay aggravated damages. Mr Lim had claimed that a statement signed by Mr Lin Jian Wei and Ms Margaret Tung was defamatory, as it implied that the club's financial difficulties were due to mismanagement by the original directors, of whom he was one. This was Mr Lim's second attempt at clearing his name, after his defamation action was dismissed by the High Court in February. Justice Chan Seng Onn had then found the statement to be defamatory, but ruled that it was published on an occasion of qualified privilege and that the purpose was not to hurt Mr Lim's reputation. The statement, issued in 2005, was to explain a scheme of payment the club had to make to its members who had successfully sued it for recruiting too many members. The club had to come up with the scheme as it was unable to pay the damages. Under Thursday's 34-page ruling, Mr Lin and Ms Tung were ordered to pay aggravated damages and cost of indemnity to Mr Lim.
