In 2009, Hyundai and KIA had to recall 700,000 units of their models due to defective brake switches. Unfortunately, not learning from their experiences, these South Korean automakers repeat their mistake and this time, it's even worse. They now have to recall a total of 1.6 million units of cars they have produced due to the exact same problem. The brake switch defect may prevent the brake lamps from illuminating even when the brake pedal is actually stepped on. Of course, this is a big deal as it may trigger rear-end collisions. In addition to that, the defect may fail to cancel the cruise control feature while braking, prevent the push-button starter from functioning, and may even block the gear shift in the neutral position. Both KIA and Hyundai will start contacting dealers and customers of the affected models in June 2013 and will provide necessary replacements free of charge. The list of the affected models is as follows: - 2007 KIA Sedona - 2007-2009 Hyundai Tucson - 2008-2009 Hyundai Veracruz - 2007-2010 KIA Rondo - 2007-2010 KIA Sportage - 2007-2010 Hyundai Elantra - 2007-2011 KIA Sorento - 2007-2011 Hyundai Santa Fe - 2010-2011 KIA Soul - 2010-2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe - 2011 Hyundai Sonata - 2011 KIA Optima

KLIMS 2010: Hyundai & Kia - The Koreans show off their new cars
Rigval posted a blog entry in MyAutoBlog
The Kuala Lumpur Motor Show 2010 (KLIMS) is/was a showcase for both Hyundai and Kia. Ever since Hyundai bought over Kia in 1998, the Korean car manufacturers have gone forwards in Hulk-sized leaps and bounds. Over the past few years their design philosophy have changed drastically and their aggressive push to market their cars have proved successful. At KLIMS, we get to see their progress in the cars that they have displayed. We'll start with Hyundai. At KLIMS we get to see their latest Avante. Fresh from its preview at the recent Los Angeles Motor Show and the Korean Busan International Motor Show, the display at KLIMS proved that the South East Asian market is important for Hyundai. The Avante is indeed a curvy little sedan that is similar in size to the Kia Forte. For me it is better looking than the recently launched Hyundai Sonata and is the culmination of Hyundai's current design philosophy that started with the 'I' series of cars (i10,i20,i30). It looks so much more proportioned than the previous Avante which to me looked like a badly shaped coke bottle running wheels that are too small for the body. It has a very fluid (hence the 'fluidic design' term) design and have little curves and dips all over. Wash this car by hand and you'd be amazed to see curves everywhere. While I personally won't buy the car, it is a nice car to look at. Much like the latest Ford Focus in terms of design language. The new Sonata was there and is already a familiar sight on the roads in Malaysia and Singapore. So looking at one on display did not push any buttons. The same goes to the facelifted Santa Fe. Both are quite handsome in terms of looks and the Sonata with its CLS aping looks still generated intrest among the visitors. I somehow think that the car looks like a sportier looking Toyota Camry. Which could be a good thing nonetheless. The other car that attracted by attention on the Hyundai stand is the iX Metro Concept Car (above & below). This car looks like a fish. It may be Hyundai's idea of what the future of supermini is but to me it looks like a fish. A Parrot Fish to be exact. This time Hyundai falls flat on its face. I hope someone from Hyundai realizes this fact and none of the external design cues escape. It should be locked up in Davy Jones' Locker. So Hyundai's cars at KLIMS were a hit and a miss. Kia on the other hand impressed me with its latest line-up. The new Sorento is indeed a decent SUV from a design point of view. The materials used for the cabin was also of pretty high quality. The switches are tactile to the touch and everything felt in its proper place. Somehow, if you ask me to choose this Sorento over Hyundai's feminine looking Santa Fe SUV I would take the Sorento any time. It is tougher looking and has build quality as good as the Hyundai. Ex-Audi designer Peter Schreyer has actually made Kia the better brand to buy. This is shown clearly in the design of the new Cadenza (nee Opirus) as well as the new Optima. Both look fabulous sharing the same clean design philosophy of the smaller Forte. Its clean lines remind me of large European sedans from Vauxhall/Opel with touches of Audi in there somewhere. When you compare these two large sedans with Hyundai's new Sonata you can somehow see that Kia has more originality compared. Yes, I did mention that you can see Opel/Audi in them, but they are not trying to be a Mercedes CLS or a Passat CC. Like the Forte, you can see the European in them, but you can't see which exact model they are trying to become, unlike the Hyundai Sonata. This little fact on design philosophy is the difference between Hyundai and Kia and this is the reason that I would choose a Kia over a Hyundai these days. Going to a motor show made me realize this.- 6 comments

The US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released data on the top safety picks for 2013. All the vehicles tested belong to the 2013 model year. This year, the IIHS came out with a new award on top of the usual TOP SAFETY PICK award. Called the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must earn good ratings for occupant protection in at least 4 of 5 evaluations, and no less than acceptable in the fifth test in order to earn it. The models award the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award are mostly mid-sized sedans. They include the Acura TL, Chrysler 200, Dodge Avenger, Ford Fusion, Honda Accord Sedan/Coupe, Kia Optima, Nissan Altima Sedan, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Suzuki Kizashi, Volkswagen Passat and the Volvo S60. The models underlined are available for sale in Singapore. The 2013 Honda Accord sedan should be making its debut locally in the coming months. If you are looking for a 'certified' safe car to ferry your family, do check them out. Honda Accord Kia Optima Subaru Legacy Suzuki Kizashi Volkswagen Passat Volvo S60

The 2011 Kia Optima was a head-turner at the recent New York Auto Show with its sleek lines and the corporate Kia nose, earning it the recognition as one of the best-looking cars at the show. By the looks of it, the Optima sedan will be positioned as the sportier member of the Hyundai-Kia midsize family. It

This is a follow up post to my earlier post on the 2011 Kia Optima (Magentis). These photos are live images taken from the New York Auto Show. As the saying goes, a picture speaks a thousand words and the world can finally see the all new Optima in its full glory. These live images confirm my initial impression that the new optima scores better in the looks department as compared to its cousin, the Hyundai Sonata. The alloy wheel design resembles those from a certain European make. The bumper is joined to the car body at a 45 degree (around there I suppose) angle and I like that treatment as it gives the car a coupe-like touch. The display car at the new york auto show seems to be fitted with red coloured brake caliper. I am doubtful that it will be a standard feature throughout the new Optima range, perhaps only reserved for top end high performance variant. Under the hood, we find three all-new and fuel-efficient Theta II powerplants: a 2.4-liter GDI four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter GDI turbo engine or a 2.4-liter hybrid. The 2.4-liter GDI engine delivers 200 hp while the 2.0-liter turbo GDI engine delivers an impressive 274 hp. The 2.4-liter hybrid engine will be introduced in 2011. Will the new Optima enjoy the success of its smaller sibling, the Cerato Forte, in Singapore ? I believe it can, given the smart marketing strategy by C&C.

Photos taken from Kia-World.net - Redesigned exterior and interior establishes Kia's distinctive, aggressive new look - New engine packs powerful punch without sacrificing fuel economy (SEOUL) March 21, 2008 - Kia Motors Corporation today unveiled the 2009 Optima midsize sedan (also known as 'Magentis' in some markets) at the New York International Auto Show. On sale in early fall, the refreshed Optima offers a completely modified exterior, which offers a more aggressive, dynamic style than previous models, and is outfitted with a new engine that provides more power and better fuel economy. For 2009, Optima also is larger than its predecessors, which complements its distinctive new styling and separates itself from other vehicles in the growing midsize segment. "Optima is in a strong position to change the way consumers think about midsize sedan offerings," said Tom Loveless, vice president, sales of Kia Motors America. "Already known for its exemplary quality, safety and value, Optima's sleek new redesign provides consumers with a sporty, fuel-efficient choice and showcases Kia's commitment to providing the best all-around vehicle package." Exterior excitement The 2009 Optima is presented with new front, side and rear styling cues, which build upon Kia's philosophy of creating dynamic vehicles that evoke passion. The fog lamps and lower front grille have been enlarged and the headlamps narrowed to create an aggressively sharper look. Wider side garnishes add sportiness while the acute front lines continue toward the back, ending on a distinctly edged trunk lid. To complete the redesigned rear fascia, taillights are narrowed to enhance Optima's sleeker cosmetic appearance. Also, new for 2009 is the addition of the sporty SX trim, which complements the handsomely-equipped, value-priced LX and luxury-oriented EX trims. Already available with Kia's Rio, Rio5 (5-door), Spectra and Spectra5 (5-door) models, the SX line provides another dimension for Optima buyers looking for a sportier midsize. Along with a sport-tuned suspension, SX upgrades include: a black-bezeled front grille and headlamps, LED outside-mirror turning signals, fog lights and hyper-silver-finished 17-inch wheels. EX and LX V6 models are equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, and are fitted with Goodyear tires.

Anyone test drove or has one? Looks like American Limo, quite a different approach by Kia. Does it have a semi-auto gearbox like Hyundai H-matic?

Just saw some net news that they will be introducing their all new design model next year called 2006 ... which would you buy ? 1) Hyundai Sonata - Newly design engine (NF) and more sexy look (some spy shots) 2) Going to be same platform as the new Sonata but cheaper I think 3) This one with a new L6 engine ... hmmm ... interesting.
