  1. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwLfhVnALOAThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(U.S.) would like drivers to know that when eggnog and Christmas cheer get the best of you this season, driving is the last thing you should do, and it has enlisted the mercenary services of Robocop to remind you. In a $7.5-million ad campaign, at least. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INmtQXUXez8 The anti-drunk driving commercials are part of "Drive sober or get pulled over" ads that accompany a heightened police crackdown on drunk drivers until January 1. It coincides with the release of the Robocop reboot, which is scheduled to be in theaters next February. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPLSpmAtc1Q You can check out the 32-second NHTSA spot below, and also two trailers for the Robocop film just to make sure you understand what you're dealing with. You know what needs to happen now. Rather, you have ten seconds to comply.... Here in Singapore, Drink driving is a very serious offence and the penalties are severe. Drink drivers, on conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months, which would, in effect, invalidate their driving licences. These motorists will have to undergo the theory and practical tests in order to obtain their driving licences again. In addition, first-time offenders can be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, or jailed up to 6 months, while repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of $30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to 3 years. They may also receive up to six strokes of the cane should death or serious injury occur. So, don't drive to drink :)
  2. [extract] Three Ford vehicle owners in the US have filed lawsuits against the company for alleged defects in the automaker
  3. Some car buyers stay away from the first few batches of an all-new model to allow time for teething issues to be ironed out. There could be some truth in such beliefs. A case in point is the recent recall of five 2013 model year Nissan vehicles due to defective passenger airbag issue. These five models are the Sentra (Sylphy), Altima, Pathfinder, Leaf and Infiniti JX35. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the seat-mounted sensor could fail to defect the presence of the passenger, resulting in the airbag not deploying in the event of a severe crash. The faulty sensor was discovered at one of Nissan's manufacturing sites when the airbag warning light was observed. The problem was traced back to the sensor
  4. According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), General Motors is recalling 12,626 units of the 2013 Cadillac XTS model due to improper rear seat head restraints. "The rear seat head restraints may not lock in the upright position after being folded forward," said NHTSA. "If the head restraint is at its lowest position and it falls forward, it will not meet the height required by the standard. In the event of a vehicle crash, the lowered head restraint may increase the occupant's risk of neck injury." The affected vehicles were made between 12 Oct 2011 and 30 Aug 2012. To GM's credit, the automaker discovered the problem themselves. The single piece rear headrest design looks classy and unique but is sadly lacking in its functionality. The Cadillac XTS is a full-size luxury car that is meant to be a replacement for the STS and DTS. The XTS proved to be a popular model. For the first 10 months of 2012, the XTS is already the 4th best-selling car in the states.
  5. [extract] A fabulous feature of the new Hyundai Veloster is its one-and-a-half sized sunroof, which gives your head a little breathing room in the rakishly-shaped car. However, this feature has turned out to be a nightmare for certain owners as they experienced an earth-shattering phenomenon literally. The US National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) is conducting investigations over complaints on the Veloster
  6. 13,172 units of the 2012 model year Audi Q5 crossovers that were built between 21 June 2011 to 9 December 2011 are being recalled in the US due to a defective sunroof glass panel, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "Some vehicles may be equipped with a front sunroof glass panel that is susceptible to breakage in extremely cold weather/temperature conditions," said NHTSA in its recall summary of the problem. "Should the sunroof's glass break while the vehicle is in use, the falling glass could cut and injure the driver or passengers. It could also distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash." Audi first learnt about the problem from its dealers after a small number of vehicles came in during the 2011/2012 winter season with a broken panoramic sunroof. The company performed an analysis which indicated that very cold temperatures could increase the tensile stress, between the front sunroof glass panel and the frame, causing the glass to shatter. I believe this is caused by the contraction of the glass frame caused by the cold weather. Volkswagen Group of America said it is not aware of any claim of accident or injury caused by this issue in documentation filed with federal safety regulators. Audi dealers will replace the front sunroof glass panel free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on August 7.
  7. If you currently own the latest Volvo S60 or XC60 and feels that heat is building up from below, it is better to pull over at the side of the road and check. This is because Volvo is recalling 2,742 2012 Volvo S60s and XC60s in the US due to a potential fuel leak that increases the risk of a fire, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). "An incorrect mixture of underbody coating and over-application can result in rigid, icicle-like areas hanging from the vehicle's undercarriage," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If this condition exists, the underbody coating may penetrate the fuels lines and cause fuel leakage, increasing the risk of a crash." Fortunately, Volvo said it has not received any reports alleging injuries, fatalities or crashes related to the defect. Unfortunately, the defect was discovered at Volvo's Ghent, Belgium assembly plant, the same plant where Singapore
  8. After a 10 month long investigation the US Transport Secretary announced that Toyota vehicles are safe to drive. This statement basically clears Toyota of the unintended acceleration claims that caused cars like the USDM Camry and the Corolla to accelerate out of control. This was something I seem to have known for awhile now as I haven't heard anyone in this region that faced this problem. Mr Ray LaHood, Transport Secretary added that the lengthy investigation found no electronic cause or faults that could cause certain Toyota vehicles to suffer from unintended acceleration. It could be down to car mats getting stuck under the accelerator pedal or human error instead of supposed faults to the car's Drive-by-wire accelerator setup. Maybe Americans wear size 12 shoes. Whatever the reason, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is still considering new regulation to improve safety on new cars. These regulation additions may require manufacturers to fit brake override systems, keyless ignition as standard and car data recorders (like those on airplanes). In short, more gadgets in our cars and more cost passed down to us. If this happens, we know who to blame for our cars getting more and more complicated
  9. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata has only been on sale for a few months, but it's already winning over many American mid-size sedan buyers, and we've been every impressed by what we've found in our first drive and review. However, the rakish new Sonata could face a recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into about 16,300 Sonatas due to potential steering issues. NHTSA has received reports that cite problems with either a separation of the upper universal joint in the intermediate steering shaft assembly. The result is a complete loss of steering capability, though the universal joint was not completely separated. Hyundai says that it is unaware of any accidents or injuries connected to this issue and that it is fully cooperating with NHTSA on the investigation. The automaker also says that it had received reports of two vehicles with a steering problem linked to the upper universal joint, but that both were repaired without issue. Expect the results of NHTSA's investigation to be released in the coming weeks [source: The Detroit News]
  10. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating the 2005 and 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for a wiring harness issue that could prevent the airbags from deploying in a collision. There are about 100,000 vehicles that could be affected if a recall notice is issued, and NHTSA says that it's received four complains of failures of the wiring harness, though there have been no reported injuries as a result of the issue. Mercedes spokesman Robert Moran reportedly told Bloomberg that the condition presents itself when drivers telescope the steering wheel all the way out and and as high as it can go. Under those conditions the potentially defective harness could pull out of the connector block, causing an open-circuit condition in the driver's airbag circuits. If the harness disconnects from the connector, the air bag warning lamp will illuminate and one of two diagnostic fault codes will point to the problem. The German automaker sent out a TSB back in December 2005 to address the issue, which is fixed with what NHTSA calls a "substantially longer" wiring harness. The TSBs, which have been updated over time, covers MY 2003-2009 E-Class and the MY 2006-2010 CLS, though only the 2005 and 2006 E-Class is currently being investigated. Hit the jump to read over the NHTSA summery of the investigation. [source: Bloomberg]
  11. Now all you 2010 Porsche Panamera owners that happen to be reading please pay attention. There is now a worldwide recall for the 2010 Panamera (all models) for a potential safety belt defect that may not protect the driver and passenger in the event of a crash. The American National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Porsche have issued such a recall in America as the defect can occur when either front seat is set at a very forward position close to the dashboard. Porsche has now issued a recall for all 2010 Panamera models around the world. So tall people who sit in the front seats pulled way back will not encounter this problem. Slightly discriminatory information towards short people being posted here folks. The NHTSA had stated that when the front seat is put in a very forward position close to the dashboard, the safety belt mount could detach from the anchoring mechanism while the belt is being fastened or opened. The problem may cause injuries and fatalities in a crash as the safety belt may not be able to protect its user sitting in the very forward position and the safety belt mount may, as they mentioned 'detach' from the mounting points. According to the NHTSA, approximately 3,100 units were affected by this recall in America. The report also mentions that Stateside Panamera owners can take their cars to the nearest Porsche dealer so that an additional locking mechanism may be installed to correct this fault. The repair is free of charge and should take 15 minutes. To date, no injuries or deaths have been linked to this recall. Porsche also states that all 11,324units manufactured in 2010 are affected by this recall. Porsche have been quick to pick up on this fault and are acting on it. So if you do own a 2010 Panamera, or know of someone who owns one, call your local Porsche agent and ask them about this matter. Better be safe than extremely sorry.
  12. Automotive News reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could hit Toyota with another fine on top of the $16.4 million levied last week. As for that most recent fine, turns out that it could have been as much as $13.8 billion, based on Toyota having to pay a fine on each of the 2.3 million cars recalled. A statute, however, limits the amount to the one imposed. NHTSA isunhappy about the timelines it's putting together of events concerning Toyota's pedal defects. The agency is also miffed about the recent revelation that a Japanese Toyota executive sent a letter last October ordering that engineering changes to accelerator pedals not be carried out in America, even though they were being made in other countries. For the time being, though, Toyota hasn't yet confirmed whether it'll will contest the first fine, and it's clear what the possible second fine is meant to address. If all the involved parties would just get everything on the table, we might have a chance of wrapping this up in 2010.
  13. After much deliberation, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has decided to issue a $16.4 million penalty to Toyota
