  1. Hey guys, i'm contemplating whether to renew one of my company's BMW 523i F10 Highline. Below are some of the mods/upgrade i'm intending to do if i eventually get the car. Assuming the car is in 100% stock condition, i'd like some advice on the dos & don't from fellow tiong chia hia dis. 19" M sports Rims (What is the best tyre profile?) Shock Absorbers/Suspensions LCI Headlights ( The squarish headlights instead of the stock round ones.) Keyless Entry + Electronic Push Button (Not sure whether it comes with it?) M Sports Steering Wheel Chip tuning (Increase Torque/Bhp. Understand from some friends need to change Air Intake or something like that.) Quad Exhaust (LTA Friendly?) Interior change to Maroon (Any Idea where can find for this 10 Year Old Bimmer) Brembo Brake Kit (No idea what is 4 pot or 6 pot and which is sufficient) Key FOB (Any idea if can use the latest gen G Series Keys to Sync on an F10 Key?) Upgrade on display I'm also intending to do my own servicing + changing of filters. Need some advice on the type of EO and Filters for better performance.

  3. This thread is set up for discussions of anything technical, features, functions, tips/tricks or technological gadgets relating to fuel consumption (FC) and performance for general drivers. It is not for the discussion extensive or extreme car modifications and similar irrelevances. Do share what works for you, your aspiration and related information. Do ask if you have any questions relating FC and performance.

  5. An image of an LTA officer checking the undercarriage of a Mazda RX8 with a flashlight is circulating on WhatsApp group chats and social media. In the image (see full image below), we can tell that this incident happened sometime at night and it's at a HDB estate. Image taken from Roads.sg Just so you know, LTA officers are obligated to come down and visit you whenever they receive a complaint about your vehicle. It could be illegal parking matters or of course illegal modifications, which is exactly what the LTA officer is checking for in the image. The best part about these visits is that you won’t even know about them! Upon inspection and if found guilty of modification violations, you’ll only hear about their visit through a letter from LTA accompanied with a fine/summon that will probably tear a hole through your *censored*. Why people want to “sabo” you If you’ve done modifications to your car and someone made a complaint against you, it could be a couple of reasons 1. They have nothing better to do and damn cb 2. They cannot tolerate the disturbance your car causes to the neighbourhood Generally when people complain, it’s because of No.2. What should you do if you don’t want people to call the polis? LTA has very clear guidelines as to what modifications need or don’t need LTA’s approval. They’ve also included modifications that are specifically not allowed. Everything else not mentioned, is fair game. Taken from LTA.gov.sg Keep within the guidelines and LTA won’t touch your car. As you can see, not everyone appreciates how loud your vehicles are. Especially in residential areas. Like, why? Louder isn’t always better. Facebook comments and feature image taken from Roads.sg Also, we aren't in America where we can own the car for a lifetime. It's just a 10-year lease! Don't need mod lah! Call 1800 2255 582 for the LTA customer service hotline if a car is disrupting your peace.

  8. I've noticed some threads being closed because a particular topic or news link has already been posted in another thread. Most of the time, it's really obvious which thread it is, but sometimes it isn't. That little news link could be submerged in a gargantuan thread dealing with some other topic entirely. Case in point: http://www.mycarforum.com/topic/2696504-singaporean-in-worlds-top-10-earning-pastors-list/ That thread was closed because that post had apparently already been made in another thread. I wanted to follow up on this discussion. So I skimmed through the Lite and EZ subforum. Nothing obvious caught my eye. So I still don't know which thread had that particular discussion going. I even went as far as to do a search for "pastor". I feel that I should never have had to do this just to follow a supposedly current topic that should've stood out on the forum index, but I did it anyway. Here are the results of the search:http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?RPG=&app=core&DIS=&module=search&do=quick_search&req=&search_app=forums&search_content=titles&fullsearch=all&search_term=pastor None of the search results save the locked thread have a newer post than late 2013, meaning that they couldn't be referencing a brand new news article. So I'm left wondering which thread the mod was thinking about. Here are my gentle suggestions for our dear moderators: 1) Please go easy on closing threads as "duplicates". It's fine if it's an obvious dupe, but something as subtle as this, where the topic might be buried in another thread that started out discussing something else, is less clear-cut. Closing every single thread that *might* have *some* echo in another thread becomes oppressive if taken too far. 2) Even if you close, *please* link to the thread, or even better, the *actual post* (especially if buried in a large thread) that started out discussing the duplicate post topic. 3) And finally, wherever possible, *merge* rather than *close*. I understand there may be forum software limitations that hinder this, but if it's doable, then merging is far preferable to closing, especially when posters have taken pains to construct an argument about something to get the discussion going (behaviour we should be encouraging, rather than just having them link and submit). I hope my suggestions are taken in the positive way they were intended. I have been a moderator on international fora before, so I do speak from experience. I am aware of the challenges facing moderators everyday - frankly, it's a thankless task - but having a lighter touch can do wonders for the general tenor of the forum.
  9. just wondering beside Stuttgart, are there any other independant Porsche workshops that can do good servicing and mods? tried doing a search but found none.
  10. Been years in the forum, the MODS had been banning people for fun, favoritism, cannot dislike their posts etc....... Now I am curious, how many of you in here think MODS here are hypocrites????? They are!!!!! Ban me if you r not happy, I speak the truth!
  11. Here are four car tuning aspects and accessories to avoid if you do not want to damage overall performance of your car. Unlike other countries the local tuning market can be deemed as more of a cult culture, or so I believe, but even so it has to be done right. 1. Massive rims You've seen them in rap/R&B music videos, Fast and Furious series and perhaps spent a lot of time choosing the correct shoes for your car when playing video games. While large sized rims certainly add to the aesthetic appeal, people can get greedy at times. Upgrading from your stock wheel to larger and sportier ones isn't much of a problem if you are upgrading from let’s say 15 to 16-inches, but when you start going more than 2 or 3-inches over the manufacturer’s tyre size, you can soon run into trouble. If your overall wheel diameter (rim + tyre) exceeds what the manufacturer has made room for in the wheel well, the tyres can start rubbing against the wheel well liner each time you go through a bump. Plus, you have to note that large diameter rims are also wider, and these can grind against the wheel well walls. And larger wheels lead to another problem - low profile tyres. 2. Ultra low profile tyres Low profile tyres are perfectly at home on race cars where cornering grip is important over everything else. Yet, this could pose a serious problem on road cars. Low profile tyres have very rigid side walls and hence offer very little pliancy. While this might be desirable on the race track, where you want your car’s tyres to flex as little as possible under immense cornering forces, it does compromise on ride comfort. Additionally a less pliant tyre will cause your car’s suspension to work even harder, adding significantly amounts of wear and tear to the various suspension components. 3. Spoilers & other aero bits You see them all the time on JDM cars. Spoilers, flics, wide body, front and rear diffusers. But do they really work? The world of motorsports - specially Le Mans, GT, and DTM - cars are adorned with thousands of little wings, nips and tips and of course do not look anything like road going cars. And don't even get me started on Formula One. But the teams usually have an Aerodynamic specialist, who spends thousands of hours in the wind tunnel, trying to make the car as slippery as possible. Spoilers are mounted on the back of racing cars to create downforce at high speeds, which pushes the back down and provides cornering grip - but the ones offered by tuning kits are merely for show. I doubt even the massive rear spoiler on the A 45 AMG does anything? Regardless road cars are meant to be driven on normal roads, not the track. As such any default aerodynamic setting is more than essential. 4. Body kits The shark fin diffuser, large openings, hood scoop all aid in cooling and thermal dynamics of your car - if it is designed for racing. The thought of having a bucket seat and carbon hood, on a modest Japanese or Korean sedan baffles me. If any random auto enthusiast can slap a piece of carbon, lower his car, and install momo steering or brembo brakes to achieve Nurburging burning lap time performance - then the world of physics can be rendered useless.

  14. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Mods for unmoderating me so I can post again. They really show much impartiality and tolerance in letting me back. Think they are really doing a good job despite not being paid. So thank you and hugz! If I had known, then I wouldn't have registered a new nick sasa1 So I will try my best to behave until I reach fast and furious and contribute meaningfully to the forum. To the mods, I apologize if you feel that this thread is a waste of bandwidth and delete it.
  15. Traffic police goes plastic in China to fool motorists This will free-up our mods time Series of plastic signs simulating the rear of police vehicles have been spotted on Chinese highways. Tue, Mar 13, 2012 AsiaOne BEIJING - A series of plastic signs have been spotted on Chinese highways, according to Chinese media reports. The signs, erected by the Chinese traffic police, include LED displays with messages that read "currently measuring speed" and "don't speed", look very similar to the rear of police vehicles. Some of the signs were also fitted with red and blue flashing lights. The simulations of traffic police vehicles fool motorists into slowing down. According to a report on Shanghaiist, 10 of the signs have been introduced in Henan. They are mostly placed near road construction areas and dangerous sections of the highway. The report said effectiveness is higher in the evenings perhaps due to the lower visibility and therefore, an increased chance of mistaking them for the real deal. These signs are green too. The report said they are being powered by solar energy in order to ensure constant highway vigilance.

  17. When carbon fibre was introduced in the 1960s, it was poised to not only take on fibreglass, but also a whole host of other materials. Initially used in the aerospace industry, carbon fibre is now used in numerous of other products, notably in automotive parts and accessories. Since it appeared more than 50 years ago and we have been using it for decades, why is this material which is lighter and tougher than steel, still so expensive? Well, apparently, carbon fibre has to go through an expensive process just to manufacture it. Before carbon fibre becomes carbon fibre, it starts as a base material, usually an organic polymer with carbon atoms binding together long strings of molecules called a polyacrylonitrile. To get the carbon part of carbon fibre, half of the starting material's acrylic needs to be kicked away. "The final product will cost double what you started with because half burns off," explains Bob Norris of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (Tennessee, USA) polymer matrix composites group. "Before you even account for energy and equipment, the precursor in the final product is something around $5 a pound." Forcing the acrylic to shed its non-carbon atoms takes monstrous machines and a lot of heat. The first of two major processing steps is oxidisation stabilisation. Here fibres are continuously fed through 50-100 foot-long ovens pumping out heat in the several hundred degrees Celsius range. The process takes hours and uses up lots of energy. Then the material goes through the carbonisation process. Although the furnaces here are shorter and don't run for as long as the previous step, they operate at much higher temperatures, at 1000 degrees Celsius for the initial step and then another round of heating with even higher temperatures. Just imagine the power bill for these processes and it doesn't end here. Manufacturers also have to deal with the acrylic that doesn't hold on during the heating process. Off gasses (the introduction of harmful chemicals into the environment) need to be treated so as not to poison the environment. After all of that, what we get are just strands of carbon fibre. They still need to be arranged into a lattice (criss-cross) in order to take advantage of the material's uni-directional strength. The arranged fibres have to be parallel and stretched evenly, every single one of them. A wavy strand in a lattice will put extra stress on a straight fibre, and that straight one will end up breaking first. To compensate for the possibility of an imperfect weave, manufacturers might thread in ten percent more of the already expensive fibres than is necessary. These strands alone are not what manufacturers need. Carbon fibre is used to reinforce composite materials. They are like steel bars in a block of concrete. Right now carbon fibres work with a thermoset resin. Together they make a composite that can be manipulated to take a certain shape. The problem is that once the resin has been shaped and cured in an autoclave, it cannot be modified without compromising its structural integrity. A small mistake means a lot of waste, including time. Thermosetting takes over an hour, which is a long time considering how fast the automotive industry stamps out body panels. The process of producing a carbon fibre product takes a lot of time and energy which eventually costs a lot of money. Until scientists or experts in this field comes up with a manufacturing process that costs lower and less time consuming, consumers have to bear with the prices of carbon fibre for now.
  18. My very first mod was an 'extractor' installed by a ICT fren, all in about $400 and the mid range torque improvements were very obvious..... back in those days when engines didnt have ECU, just carb/distributor...
  19. When I renewed my policy ard Dec last year, Aviva was the lowest at ~$1060 with 30% ncd, next Directasia and a few standard others. Thus went for the lowest quote. Terminated my policy with them in July with about 7months and 7days of insurance coverage and hence emailed them for a refund. Imagine my disgust when I was told that their refund rate goes like this, as given by them: If you look at their table, so long as you use more then 1 day past a month, they will round it up to the next month. Thus, whether I utilised 7months 1day or 8months, it's considered the same. Is this reasonable? On top of that, they charge me 80% of usage when I had only used 59.7% of the policy term (218/365 days)! As a result, instead of getting back 40% ($424) or slightly less than that (some insurance companies give 100% or 85% of balance prorated), I'll only receive 20% or ~$213. It's my fault that I was ignorant of this but I hope the rest of you will at least know abt this, if you dun alr know, and question the insurance company on their refund policy before committing. I've learnt my lesson and will chk on the next one I buy.
