From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/afp...1238785/1/.html Life on Mars? Maybe not: NASA Posted: 22 November 2012 0755 hrs In this photo provided by NASA's JPL, this is one of the first images taken by NASA's Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars on August 6 (AP Photo/NASA/JPL-Caltech) WASHINGTON: NASA downplayed Wednesday talk of a major discovery by its Martian rover after remarks by the mission chief raised hopes it may have unearthed evidence life once existed on the Red Planet. Excitement is building over soon-to-be-released results from NASA's Curiosity rover, which is three months into a two-year mission to determine if Mars has ever been capable of supporting microbial life. Its Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instruments have been sending back information as it hunts for compounds such as methane, as well as hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, that would mean life could once have existed there. In an interview with US broadcaster National Public Radio, aired Tuesday, lead mission investigator John Grotzinger hinted at something major but said there would be no announcement for several weeks. "We're getting data from SAM," he said. "This data is gonna be one for the history books. It's looking really good." A spokesman for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managing the project, appeared to pour cold water Wednesday on the hopes of space enthusiasts looking forward to an earth-shattering discovery. "John was delighted about the quality and range of information coming in from SAM during the day a reporter happened to be sitting in John's office last week. He has been similarly delighted by results at other points during the mission so far," spokesman Guy Webster told AFP. "The scientists want to gain confidence in the findings before taking them outside of the science team. As for history books, the whole mission is for the history books," Webster said. Scientists do not expect Curiosity to find aliens or living creatures but they hope to use it to analyze soil and rocks for signs the building blocks of life are present and may have supported life in the past. The $2.5 billion Curiosity rover -- which landed in Gale Crater on the Red Planet on August 6 -- also aims to study the Martian environment to prepare for a possible human mission there in the coming years. US President Barack Obama has vowed to send humans to the planet by 2030. - AFP/fa

Thu, Jun 02, 2011 The New Paper By Koh Hui Theng NO ONE was hurt in an accident at the junction of Lorong Chuan and Serangoon Avenue 2 on Monday evening (May 30). The only "casualty": The metal post carrying a speed camera at the traffic junction. Tudou IPO soon, says CEO 15 Sept 2010 Today SHANGHAI - Tudou.com, China's second-largest online video website, plans an initial public offering soon to raise funds to compete against market leader Youku.com in the world's biggest Internet market. "It's something that's inevitable. It should happen fairly soon. I can't talk about specifics," chief executive Gary Wang, the 37-year-old founder of Shanghai-based Tudou, said of a possible IPO in an interview yesterday. Tudou will sell shares in a "Western market," he said on Bloomberg TV, without elaborating. Tudou and Youku both have said they must invest in bandwidth to broadcast videos and in copyright for professional content that the companies say makes up about 70 per cent of their sites. Youku commands about 18 per cent of China's online-video market, while Tudou has about 13 per cent, according to a survey published by Analysys International, a Beijing-based research firm. "Youku and Tudou share a similar strategic layout and operation mode," according to the Sept 9 Analysys report. While both offer user-generated content, they are also "purchasing film copyrights actively so as to widen the gap with other independent online-video websites," the report said. Tudou started its website in 2005 and has raised US$135 million ($177 million through five rounds of funding, including US$50 million last month, of which US$35 million came from Singapore's Temasek Holdings. Tudou's vice-president for marketing and business development, Ms Anita Huang, told MediaCorp last month when it raised funds from Temasek that it would use the investment to woo more Chinese mobile phone owners to its portal. China has 420 million Internet users, of which at least 277 million access the Internet with their mobile phones.

For destroying the sanctity of the World's First F1 Night Race and making us believe that Alonso won due to luck and his sheer driving skill, perhaps we should all boycott the purchase of Renault cars for an undetermined period of time. I'm sure that there are many other makes that would provide a suitable compromise or exceed Renault's. Would be better if this was done worldwide.

i got this thru email.... 28hrs work week for germans... damn ....good life.. Good article ... esp the last part. [/size] A MUST READ An excellent article to read and enjoy (may be action as well!!). It's been 18 years since I joined Volvo, a Swedish company. Working for them has proven to be an interesting experience. Any project here takes 2 years to be finalized, even if the idea is simple and brilliant. It's a rule. Globalized processes have caused in us (all over the world) a general sense of searching for immediate results.. Therefore, we have come to posses a need to see immediate results. This contrasts greatly with the slow movements of the Swedish. They, on the other hand, debate, debate, debate, hold x quantity of meetings and work with a slowdown scheme. At the end, this always yields better results. In other words: [ol] [*]Sweden has 2 million inhabitants.[/ol] [ol] [*]Stockholm has 500,000 people.[/ol] [ol] [*]Volvo, Escania, Ericsson, Electrolux, are some of its renowned companies. Volvo even supplies NASA.[/ol] The first time I was in Sweden , one of my colleagues picked me up at the hotel every morning. It was September, bit cold and snowy. We would arrive early at the company and he would park far away from the entrance (2000 employees drive their car to work). The first day, I didn't say anything, neither the second or third days. One morning I asked him, "Do you have a fixed parking space? I've noticed we park far from the entrance even when there are no other cars in the lot." To which he replied, "Since we're here early we'll have time to walk, don't you think that whoever gets in late will need a place closer to the door?" Imagine my face. Nowadays, there's a movement in Europe named Slow Food. This movement establishes that people should eat and drink slowly, with enough time to taste their food, spend time with the family, friends, without rushing. Slow Food is against its counterpart, Fast Food and what it stands for as a lifestyle. Slow Food is the basis for a bigger movement called Slow Europe, as mentioned by Business Week. Basically, the movement questions the sense of "hurry" and "craziness" generated by globalization, fuelled by the desire of "having in quantity" (life status) versus "having with quality", "life quality" or the "quality of being". French people, even though they work 35 hours per week, are more productive than Americans or British. Germans have established 28.8 hour workweeks and have seen their productivity been driven up by 20%.. This slow attitude has come to the notice of USA , the pupils of the fast and "do it now" brigade. This no-rush attitude doesn't represent doing less or having a lower productivity It means working and doing things with greater quality, productivity, perfection, with attention to detail and less stress. It means re-establishing family values, friends, free and leisure time. Taking the "now", present and concrete, versus the "global", undefined and anonymous. It means taking humans' essential values, the simplicity of living. It stands for a less coercive work environment, more happy, lighter and more productive work place where humans enjoy doing what they know best how to do. It's time to stop and think on how companies need to develop serious quality with no-rush that will increase productivity and the quality of products and services, without losing the essence. In the movie, 'Scent of a Woman', there's a scene where Al Pacino asks a girl to dance and she replies, "I can't, my boyfriend will be here any minute now". To which Al responds, "A life is lived in an instant". Then they dance the tango. Many of us live our lives running behind time, but we only reach it when we die of a heart attack or in a car accident rushing to be on time. Others are so anxious to live for the future that they forget to live the present, which is the only time that truly exists. We all have equal time throughout the world. No one has more or less. The difference lies in how each one of us does with our time. We need to live each moment. As John Lennon said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans". Congratulations for reading this email till the end of this message. There are many who will have stopped in the middle so as not to waste time in this "Globalized" world.

Michael Schumacher drives taxi in airport dash It seems that you can take Michael Schumacher out of racing, but you can't take racing out of Michael Schumacher. The seven-time Formula One world champion took over from his taxi driver in order to make it to the airport in time for a flight, it has emerged. Cabbie Tuncer Yilmaz watched in awe as the racing legend, 38, showed him how his job ought to be done. "I found myself in the passenger seat, which was strange enough, but to have 'Schumi' behind the wheel of my cab was incredible," Mr Yilmaz told German newspaper the Muenchner Abendzeitung. Schumacher, who lives in Switzerland, had flown in to an aerodrome near Coburg, Bavaria, on Saturday and taken a taxi to Gehuelz to pick up a new puppy. On the 30km (19 mile) return journey, however, Schumacher felt they were short on time, and made a polite request to Mr Yilmaz that he be allowed to take over. Unsurprisingly, and perhaps with a view to bettering himself professionally, the driver did so. With his wife, two children and new addition to the family Ed, the Australian Shepherd pup, on board, Schumacher proceeded to put pedal to metal. Famously, German autobahns have no blanket speed limits, so the driver was able to put the cab through its paces. Although he was driving an Opel Vivaro, a minivan-style vehicle which has a top speed of 163km (101 miles) per hour, Schumacher managed to get the most out of it, according to the cabbie. "He drove at full throttle around the corners and overtook in some unbelievable places," said a white-knuckled Mr Yilmaz. The retired champion gave the taxi driver a generous 100 euro (71.76 pounds) tip on top of the 60 euro fare. Despite helping out as a test driver at old team Ferrari, Schumacher has ruled himself out of any return to Formula One.

Will be going up on the ND long weekend to Petaling Jaya AKA PJ. Will be staying again at the Saujana. Promotional rates from AWD. MYR437 for 2 nights with complimentary bed for the young ones. Very good for a 5* hotel. Was thinking of the Holiday Genmarie for a change but many Malaysians reviewed it as not worth having it's rating. Anyway, will be going to Kuala Selangor. Will be on the fireflies tour. The entry rates are good. MYR10 for adults, MYR6 for kids. Better than Desaru. Might try the seafood there too. Dunno if I got enough time for KL. Kuala Selangor itself has a lot of "missed" attractions. Fort Altingsburg, the wetlands and other historic sites. Stay tuned for pics and reports as usual. I doubt I can post firefly pics. Very few cameras can take pictures in near darkness.

maybe have like 5 classes of driving license. class 3E - 100hp and below class 3D - 160hp and below class 3C - 220hp and below class 3B - 300hp and below class 3A - above 300hp class 3E,D and C can hold their license for unlimited period (like current cl3) class A, B, C, D have to go for annual advance driving test, to ensure they can handle their cars. class 3B and 3A have to pay maybe $1000/yr for this license, and face heavy fine and jail term if they are involved in serious accidents, and also license ban for 6mths 1yr etc...if caught racing or recklessly speeding or DUI, should be banned 3 years etc.. for me, power comes with responsibility. and like police, garmen...this power must be used appropriately, and not excessively. this power is not to be abused to show off to others to see who is boss, who is king of the road. for those who choose to kill themselves speeding and racing in their wrexes and evos etc.....go ahead...the roads are better without you.
