End of an era: Kenny Rogers Roasters at Great World City will serve its last meal on Apr 14 We, as a nation of foodies, have moved on to bigger trends and better chains. Which is probably why mediocre international brands like Chili’s, Pablo Cheese Tart, and Dazzling Cafe gave it their best shot but ultimately didn’t make the cut when it comes to longevity in Singapore. On the heels of their exit from our shores, it looks like once-popular rotisserie Kenny Rogers Roasters may soon follow suit. The American restaurant chain, which opened here in 1994, used to see crowds of diners hungry for roasted chicken and corn muffins flock to its outlets. But it appears to have quietly closed down several spots in the last couple years. Apparently, at least according to the Singapore Atrium Sale Facebook page, the Great World City branch is its last, and it’s shuttering after one final day of operations on April 14. In a notice at the outlet, the management Pacific Utama thanked customers for their “patronage all these years” and notified them of the impending closure. No confirmation yet if the brand is permanently leaving Singapore, but with the Suntec City and Novena ones already gone, it seems the future could be dire for country music star Kenny Roger’s restaurant. In the online sphere, netizens have been lamenting the exit of yet another nostalgic spot, so perhaps the venue could see a spike in customers just before it closes this Sunday.

Dear friends at this forum.... this is my first post in this forum and hope to join you guys/gals for a good time! Got my Kia Carens last week. All was fine except some disappointment about the auto trans and the fuel consumption! The auto trans gear shift seems so stiff and plunge to higher gear lower rev so fast that the car could sustain the necessary torque to go (especially uphill....) The fuel consumption was also horrible, even after I add in the compensation for the differences in the size of the tyres... I am get so little km/litre that I am so embarassed to post! The specs says about 10-11 ... I understand that new cars needs run-in but I don't that it is so bad... if any can help me on these questions, I would be most appreciative! Cheers COSX

Who is the last resident of the deserted Dakota Crescent estate ? One of Singapore’s oldest housing estates built by Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT), the housing authority before the Housing and Development Board (HDB), in 1958. Today, there are only 15 remaining blocks. These low-rise flats are located at Old Airport Road, right next to Mountbatten Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station. In 2014, Dakota Crescent is being earmarked for redevelopments under Mountbatten’s estate renewal plan and residents are expected to relocate by the end of 2016. http://www.tremeritus.com/2014/03/05/ms-fu-20k-new-citizens-30k-prs-added-last-year/ Ms Fu: 20K new citizens, 30K PRs added last year March 5th, 2014 | Author: Editorial Ms Grace Fu In Parliament today (5 Mar), Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Grace Fu said that the government has embarked on a new “strategic direction” in its population policies to bring about a slower and more sustainable pace of population growth, as committed to in the Population White Paper. She said, “Our goal is that Singapore continues to be an endearing home and a good place for Singaporeans to live, work and play.” Ms Fu also told the House that Singapore’s population grew by “just” 1.6% in 2013 last year, the slowest in 10 years and almost half the average rate of 3.1% from 2004 to 2012. 31,000 Singaporean babies were born last year resulting in a fertility rate of 1.19. The number of babies born is fewer than in 2012 but more than in 2011. Ms Fu also revealed that growth in the foreign workforce in the non-construction sector was halved from 7.1% to 3.5% last year in line with the government’s policy of tightening foreign manpower. This came about after several thousands of Singaporeans staged the biggest protest since Singapore’s independence, at Hong Lim Park on 16 Feb last year. It was staged against the 6.9 million Population White Paper passed by the PAP-dominated Parliament. Singaporeans were fed-up with the government’s “open door” policy which allowed too many foreigners to stay and work in Singapore, competing for resources with Singaporeans. Through births and immigration, Singapore citizen population grew by 0.9% to 3.31 million. Some 20,000 foreigners were also granted Singapore citizenship last year. “These (new citizens) were assessed to be to be able to contribute and integrate well into our society,” Ms Fu said. In addition, about 30,000 PR status were granted to foreigners last year to “mitigate the shrinking and ageing of our citizen population”, she added. Hoping to see more Singaporeans giving births, she urged aspiring parents to make time for things that matter, and not wait for the “perfect timing”. She said, “We, as family members, friends, employers and the community, will be there to encourage and support you every step of the way as you embark on this challenging but immensely fulfilling marriage and parenthood journey.”

Bro/sis, My neighbour (#08-126) upstair's toilet floor worn out and causes ceiling damage on neighbour downstair (#07-126). Because I live diagonally below (#07-124), I also kanna and worse, at my bed-room ceiling. Since the case has been logged with HDB, I'll prefer to let them settle. After near 2 months, my ceiling gets from bad to worse and now worse with recent heavy rain. HDB told me that because #08-126 disputed on repair cost and thus, can't repair. I don't want to get involved but I'm a victim. I'm planning for worse case scenario; if #08-126 continue not to repair and thus, my ceiling got badly damaged (concrete fell-out, furniture stained); can I sue the neighbour and claim property damage + legal fee on them? This is the last resort I want to take. TIA!

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10152684710137934&id=93889432933 Households earning more in 2014: SingStat By Alice Chia POSTED: 16 Feb 2015 14:05 File photo of the Singapore skyline. (Photo: Sutrisno Foo) AA+ SINGAPORE: Households are earning more in 2014 compared to the previous year, according to the latest report by the Singapore Department of Statistics (SingStat) on "Key Household Income Trends, 2014". Median monthly household income among resident employed households - a household headed by a Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident and with at least one working person - from work rose from S$7,870 in 2013 to S$8,290 in 2014. This is a 5.3 per cent increase in nominal terms, or a 4.1 per cent increase in real terms, after taking inflation into account. Median monthly income from each member of the household also rose from S$2,247 in 2013 to S$2,380 in 2014. This is an increase of 5.9 per cent in nominal terms, or 4.7 per cent in real terms. Overall, resident households received S$3,370 per household member on average from various Government schemes in 2014. This is 25 per cent higher than the average amount of S$2,700 received five years ago, in 2009. However, this was lower than the average of S$3,650 received in 2013, owing to a lower level of one-off transfers in 2014, said SingStat. Government structural transfers - transfers excluding one-off payments, rose in 2014 compared to 2013. - CNA/av

Charging your phone battery can be inconvenient and take awhile, but what if you could get a proper power refueling in just a few minutes? Scientists at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore say they developed a lithium-ion battery that can go from zero to 70% power capacity in two minutes. Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in phones and tablets. See also: 7 Ways to Preserve Your Battery Life on iOS 8 Perhaps even more importantly, the battery lasts much longer than the ones we have now, an attribute that could boost the electric car industry, developers said. The new battery is supposed to last for 10,000 cycles, a lifespan estimated at two decades and more than 10 times longer than what we're used to. The new battery is supposed to last for 10,000 cycles, a lifespan estimated at two decades In contrast, Apple says its phone batteries are designed to "retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles." Generally, the more you recharge a battery, the more it loses its luster over time. The breakthrough here is with the battery's anode or negative pole, which traditionally works with graphite. The graphite is replaced with a newly developed gel made from an "abundant, cheap and safe" material called titanium dioxide that's found in soil. It's also an active ingredient in sunscreen. The researchers were able to morph the spherically-shaped titanium dioxide into tubular strands that are 1,000-times thinner than a human hair. The gel speeds up reactions taking place inside the new battery, propelling the hyper-fast recharging. The researchers think the battery's most important impact will be on the electric car industry. Potential adopters can be turned off by the long recharge times and shorter battery lifespans for electric vehicles. With this battery, however, recharging your car — timewise — wouldn't be so far off from filling up a tank a gas. It should take about five minutes to give you enough power to get back on the road and 15 minutes for a full charge, the researchers said in a statement. Replacement batteries for electric cars are costly, too, with some priced at more than $5,000. Another benefit is that it would cut down on waste resulting from battery disposals. When talking about "breakthroughs" for battery technology, expectations can be very high. Don't treat this as consumer reality just yet, but it's good to know that scientists are trying to make batteries more efficient. Developers expect the new batteries to hit the market in the next two years.

After so many years and even last memory celebration, the stadium is coming to an end in October ........ Up and coming is a new Sport Hub....... CNA news: Sports Hub to open by April 2014 After being stalled for nearly two years due to the global financial downturn, the Sports Hub project will finally kick into gear. On Wednesday, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) signed the contract with the Singapore Sports Hub Consortium to design, build, finance and operate the Sports Hub for the next 25 years on a 35-hectare site in Kallang. Demolition of the National Stadium, which sits on the site, will begin in October, and the new facility will open its doors by April 2014. Should they had done it 2 years ago, this could be the YOG venue .....
