  1. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/thai-king-eldest-daughter-princess-bajrakitiyabha-mahidol-heart-lungs-kidney-support-3154316 BANGKOK: The Thai king's eldest daughter remained in hospital on Monday (Dec 19) receiving support for her heart, lungs and kidney, according to a palace statement after she collapsed last week. Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol initially fell ill Wednesday evening during a military dog training session at Nakhon Ratchasima, north of the capital Bangkok. Known in Thailand as "Princess Bha", the 44-year-old is the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and the only child from his first marriage. The kingdom's succession rules favour male heirs; however, the palace has not formally announced an heir apparent. Following the princess' collapse, she was flown to Bangkok where she continues to receive intensive medical care under close observation. In a statement issued Monday morning, the palace said her condition was "stable at one level" without elaborating. "Her royal highness' heartbeat is controlled by medicine," the statement said, adding that the systole - part of the process by which the heart beats - "does not go well". "The medical team has offered her royal highness medicine and equipment to support the work of her royal highness's heart, lung and kidney," the statement added. The princess holds an important ceremonial role in Thai society - where the royal family sits at the apex, protected from criticism by harsh defamation laws which carry prison sentences of up to 15 years per charge. Around the capital and across the kingdom, books of well-wishing for her recovery were laid out for Thais. On Saturday the palace announced that King Vajiralongkorn and his wife Queen Suthida had tested positive for COVID-19, with both reporting mild symptoms.

I HAD BEEN PROVEN RIGHT LAST TIME'' SINGAPORECobra and python spotted 'fighting' on NTU campus Witnesses saw the python constricting itself around the head of the cobra around noon on Thursday (Aug 27). The python was taken away by pest control, but the cobra was only caught hours later. POSTED: 27 Aug 2015 21:15 UPDATED: 27 Aug 2015 22:45 PHOTOS Two snakes were seen duelling at the NTU campus on Thursday (Aug 27). (Photo: Abhishek Ambede) ENLARGE CAPTION 3716 15 0 Email More A A SINGAPORE: Two snakes, believed to be a reticulated python and a king cobra, were seen "fighting" each other on the street near Nanyang Technological University's (NTU) Research Techno Plaza (RTP) at noon on Thursday (Aug 27). PhD student Abhishek Ambede shared pictures of the incident and told Channel NewsAsia the snakes were wrestling on the road beside a forested area. "Some of us working at RTP can see the site from our office. When we spotted the incident, I went down and noticed that the python had constricted around the cobra's head. ADVERTISING The tussle, witnessed by a large crowd, lasted for about 30 minutes before the snakes separated. "The cobra escaped to the bushes, leaving the python moving slowly on its own along the road." Mr Abhishek said he and other bystanders alerted NTU's pest control, as well as the Animal Concerns Research and Society (ACRES). Pest control officers removed the python, but were unable to locate the cobra. After 4pm, the cobra reappeared briefly. "It was about that time that ACRES appeared but by the time they arrived, the snake had disappeared again into one of the drainage holes," Mr Abhishek said. "ACRES told us they could not catch the snake if they could not see it. All we know is that there is no immediate danger. The only worry is that if it reappears on the road, there is a chance it might get run over," he added. Mr Satish Digen, a technical officer at NTU, said pest control officers put sulfur powder down the drains in an attempt to draw it out. The reptile eventually emerged from its hiding place at about 10pm on Thursday and was taken away in a bag by the pest control team. The NTU Graduate Student Council earlier urged those on campus to be on alert for the cobra. "Please be careful when you take the sidewalk near to bushes. Night researchers and night runners, please be extra vigilant," it said in a post on Facebook. - CNA/hs
  10. The "King of the Blues", guitarist and singer BB King, has died aged 89. King, known for his hits My Lucille, Sweet Little Angel and Rock Me Baby, died in his sleep in Las Vegas. Born in Mississippi, King began performing in the 1940s, going on to influence a generation of musicians and work with Eric Clapton and U2. Once ranked as the third greatest guitarist of all time, he had been suffering ill health in recent months. He was recently taken to hospital with a diabetes-related illness. Media captionEric Clapton: "BB King was beacon for blues music" Fellow musicians paid tribute to King including blues guitarist Buddy Guy, who often played with him. "BB King was the greatest guy I ever met," he wrote on Instagram. "The tone he got out of that guitar, the way he shook his left wrist, the way he squeezed the strings… man, he came out with that and it was all new to whole guitar playin' world. "He could play so smooth, he didn't have to put on a show. The way BB did it is the way we all do it now. He was my best friend and father to us all." Clapton posted a video tribute on Facebook to express his sadness at the death of his "dear friend". "I want to thank him for all the inspiration and encouragement he gave me as a player over the years, and for the friendship that we enjoyed," he said. "There's not a lot left to say because this music is almost a thing of the past now, and there are not many left who play it in the pure way that BB did. He was a beacon for all of us who love this kind of music." Lenny Kravitz tweeted: "BB, anyone could play a thousand notes and never say what you said in one." Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora added: "My friend and legend BB King passed. I'm so so sad, he was so great to me. We've lost the King. My love and prayers to his family." Former Beatle Ringo Starr tweeted: "God bless BB King, peace and love to his family." Actor Hugh Laurie said: "Oh God. BB King. Let the sad times roll." And singer Will Young added: "BB King- the most wonderful blues singer and guitarist. I suggest everyone gets one of his records to hear true soul and spirit." A former farmhand, King was awarded his 15th Grammy award in 2009 for his album One Kind Favor. Jump media player Media player help Out of media player. Press enter to return or tab to continue. Media captionBB King speaking to the BBC in 2009: 'I can't retire, I need the money' He was also inducted into both the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Rolling Stone magazine placed him behind only Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman in its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. Until recently, King performed in at least 100 concerts a year. 'Heartfelt vocals' He fused together both jazz and blues on his beloved guitar, a Gibson ES-355 he lovingly dubbed "Lucille". In the early part of his career, he played to exclusively black audiences, but his heartfelt vocals and undeniable talent saw him embraced by a much broader fanbase as time went on - touring Europe and topping the charts. Younger musicians such as Clapton and Steve Miller, who admired his work, introduced him to a new generation of fans in the late '60s with hits like The Thrill is Gone. His career was reignited in the late 1980s when he duetted with U2 on When Love Comes To Town. At the turn of the millennium, aged 75, he once again achieved major commercial success with the Eric Clapton collaboration Riding With the King. "King's is now the name most synonymous with the blues, much as Louis Armstrong's once was with jazz," critic Francis Davis wrote in his 1995 book The History of the Blues. "You don't have to be a blues fan to have heard of King."

  13. PM Lee and PM Najib open Agrobazaar outlet in Singapore SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong says the friendship between Singapore and Malaysia needs to be continually nurtured and tended to. Speaking at the opening of the Agrobazaar Malaysia outlet on Wednesday (Aug 27), Mr Lee said this will ensure that success will blossom along the way. The outlet, located in Sultan Gate off Beach Road, is an agricultural-based business that promotes Malaysian fruit and products to the overseas market. Mr Lee said the Agrobazaar is one example of what cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia can deliver, as both countries move their ties forward. He also said the Agrobazaar is "something more than food" and reflects the close economic ties between the two countries, as well as their shared culture and long friendship. Mr Lee also said he looks forward to deeper interactions between the people of Singapore and Malaysia in the coming years. The building of the Rapid Transit System (RTS) link between Johor Bahru and Singapore, as well as the high-speed rail between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, are expected to improve the flow of goods and people across borders. However, Mr Lee said that with such close interactions between the two countries, issues can be expected to arise from time to time. "But I believe if we keep the lines of communication open, not just between the leaders, but also between ministers and senior officials and their counterparts, then we can manage anything which comes along, and this is the way to maintain and enhance mutual understanding, trust and respect, and continue to make progress on existing as well as new areas of cooperation," Mr Lee said. Prime Minister Najib Razak also said the the Agrobazaar is a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between Singapore and Malaysia. He explained that the Agrobazaar is a launch pad for Malaysian producers to access new international markets. "Yes, we have historic cities; yes, we have idyllic beaches and of course, we have the twin towers, but our rambutan and mangosteen, and above all - durian, really pull in the crowds," he said. Mr Najib also presented Prime Minister Lee with a basket of musang king durians and an oil painting of them enjoying the fruit during Mr Lee's recent visit to Malaysia. A fifth of Malaysia's agrofood products, worth more than US$1 billion, is exported to Singapore annually. Mr Najib is confident that the numbers will grow, based on the good cooperation at the Agrobazaar. During Mr Najib's visit in Singapore, he also took the opportunity to see the Singapore Sports Hub - one of the country's newest developments. Mr Najib posted a photo on Facebook, saying "Malaysia and Singapore have always enjoyed a healthy competitive spirit when it comes to football and we just couldn't resist kicking a ball around".

  15. Super rich Lt General of PLA, China ..... Yahoo news: Chinese general charged with graft A top Chinese military officer has been formally charged with corruption after he was exposed as owning dozens of homes, gold statues and luxury liquor, state media reported Tuesday. Gu Junshan, a former lieutenant general and deputy logistics chief for the People's Liberation Army, is the highest-ranking officer to face a military trial since 2006, the state-run Global Times newspaper said. He was charged with embezzlement, bribery, misuse of state funds and abuse of power, Xinhua said, quoting the military prosecutors' office, which could not be reached by AFP. Gu has been under investigation for more than two years. In January, widespread coverage of his opulent lifestyle in China's strictly controlled media indicated that authorities wanted to publicise his alleged misdeeds. He owned dozens of apartments in central Beijing, and his mansion in Puyang in the central province of Henan housed several gold art pieces, the magazine Caixin reported at the time. The home was modelled on the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace in Beijing, covered one hectare (2.5 acres) and was dubbed the "General's Mansion" by locals, it said. Officials seized "a gold boat, a gold wash basin and a gold statue of Mao Zedong" along with "crates of expensive liquor" on the premises, it added. more on the story, link: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/chinese-general-charged-graft-043017410.html

  24. Since its introduction in the mid 70s, no other hatchbacks have managed to knock the Golf from the throne, is it correct to say this? the old escort, then the focus; the Astra (?), more recently the 1-series, not forgetting a few other european hatchbacks like the 305-308, the magene, C4, Bravo, Alfa hatchback, etc, from japan: Civic hatchback, and all the others HBs, all more or less fail.... So far, which model(s) come close to knocking it off? why it's so hard to beat? (I am not a Golf fan)
