  1. Was searching for a suitable thread to post this but found threads about cyclist accidents on specific roads or in the complaints section about cyclist. So here goes...timing is quite tragic. http://www.tnp.sg/news/singapore-news/woman-killed-cement-mixer-while-cycling-yishun?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook#link_time=1463443842 Three women were cycling across a pedestrian crossing in Yishun when tragedy struck. A cement mixer turned into their path and collided with the woman in the middle. It then ran over the same woman, Madam Lin Shui Yu, 59, killing her on the spot. Madam Lin was on her way home with her two friends when the accident happened at the T-junction of Yishun Avenue 9 and Yishun Central, her family members told the media. The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the accident at 11.25am, and pronounced her dead at the scene. DISTRAUGHT Madam Lin's family members who were at the scene were distraught. They said she was taking care of her grandchildren and had celebrated her birthday last weekend with her grandson. A female relative knelt at the spot where Madam Lin was hit and wailed: "Why did you have to go?" She had to be supported and moved away by other family members when the pedestrian light turned red and vehicles started turning into the junction. Madam Lin's daughter, who declined to be named, said she wanted justice to be served. "I just want to know why the driver did not stop. He should have been able to see my mother," she said. The driver of the cement mixer, a 50-year-old male, was arrested by the police. A reader who wanted to be known only as Ms Ho, 34, called The New Paper hotline when she saw the blue tent along the road. Police are investigating.
  2. Got into an accident with an SMRT Bus. Anyone with experience dealing with SMRT? Or would does it make more sense to leave it completely to the insurance company? Thanks for any advice!
  3. it was juz few cars length from me. i saw the TP coming fast and furious from behind, speeding down in between lane with the siren on, i saw a car in front switching lane from 1 to 2 in split seconds, i know at that time, BIG STICK liao. zhu zhu, the TP biker cannot react at that split moment, in that half second, my heart was pounding and i saw the TP biker forcefully biang onto the back of the lane switching car until he flew. wa lao a, that car driver jia lat liao, he had just made a king of the road kissed his butt. that moment was really terrible. all the cars around halted for awhile and dont know what to do. i quickly stopped my car and went straight to the TP. "ah bang ah bang, relax, come come i put you to lay down on your back". he was crunching with his 2 elbows and 2 kneels on the ground with mourning pain. wah, can really feel his pain man. i think his left hand is badly hurt. i took out my mobile phone and start calling the 999. "wei police, there is a serious accident now on PIE towards the tuas before exit 12, a TP biker is involved and he is seriously injured. please send an ambulance here immediately"!!! i went back to attend to the victim after i hang up the call. i tried to comfort him. i saw blood on his face, i worry that his head maybe be bleeding inside the helmet. so i offered to remove his helmet so i could check for wound and stop the bleed in case is bleeding. i think my in-car video could have captured it. can check video only tonight. drive safe guys.
  4. Sallahudin Ehram Juraimi Raham Rudyanto Sarmani Mohammad Eunos Zakaria Shahifulah Mohamed Yusof Afghani Eusope Kamis Bakar Ariffin MD Rais Azroy Mazli Nine men were charged with cheating yesterday over an alleged staged road accident, which saw them claim more than $83,000 in insurance. The group is said to have conspired to fraudulently tell insurers that a Rentokil van had been involved in a crash with three cars along Sembawang Drive in July 2009, before claiming for injuries and damage to their vehicles. The day after the accident, the van's driver, Rudyanto Sarmani, 32, reported it to his employer, Rentokil Initial Singapore, which paid out $1,563 to cover repairs to the Toyota van in January 2010. He faces one charge of cheating. The Straits Times understands that the three cars involved were a Proton Gen 2, a Hyundai Matrix and a Honda Fit. 5. One of Singapore's leading general insurance providers said today (Aug 29) that the number of motor accident claims involving cyclists that they have received doubled from 2010 to 2012. AIG Asia Pacific Insurance (AIG) also said that the number of bodily injury claims made by cyclists doubled in that same period. "We've seen a significant increase in bodily injury claims involving motorists and cyclists over the past year," said Ms Wong Siew Lee, AIG Singapore Vice-President who heads the auto insurance business. The number of cyclist-related motor accidents in the first half of this year has already exceeded the total for 2012 by 30 per cent, AIG said in a release. According to Ms Wong, AIG has seen an average annual increase of 11 per cent over the past five years in terms of bodily injury claims overall. "This is a rising trend which road users need to be aware of. We encourage everyone to take extra care on the roads," Ms Wong said. "With the rise in accidents involving cyclists, it is very important for motorists to ensure their insurance is up-to-date and comprehensive. Whatever the mode of transport, everyone has a right and a responsibility to be safe on the road." The insurer also said that the increase in accidents involving cyclists has coincided with the growing popularity of cycling in Singapore both as a sport and as a mode of transport. 6. The total number of accidents involving cyclists has gone down by 17 per cent between 2008 and last year. But every fatality is still one too many, said Parliamentary Secretary for Transport Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, as he revealed these numbers in response to MPs' questions. With this in mind, the Transport Ministry is undertaking a number of initiatives to make it safer for cyclists, he said. New dedicated cycling paths are being built in seven neighbourhoods to separate cyclists from motorists and pedestrians, and the ministry is looking to link these intra-town cycling paths so that cyclists can commute between towns. To boost education in cycling safety, the Land Transport Authority will make new "Intra-Town Cycling" handbook available soon. It lists good cycling etiquette and safety tips for cycling. The Traffic Police and Home Affairs Ministry are also studying measures to inculcate a safe road-sharing mindset among motorists and cyclists, and are reviewing cycling penalties to ensure that they reflect the severity of the offences. 8. Bus grinds to a halt after fight over phone call By Tham Yuen-C FOR about 20 minutes on Tuesday evening, an in-service SBS Transit bus service 14 stayed put in Mountbatten Road with its doors locked. The cause: an onboard squabble between two passengers that led to one of them allegedly body-slamming the other. The bus driver was following instructions from his head office to pull the double-decker over and keep everyone on board until police investigations were complete. It all started when Ms Rachel Lim, 33, riding on the upper deck of the bus on her way home, called her daughter at 7.55pm to say she would be late because traffic was crawling that wet day. She told The Straits Times she was still on the phone when a Caucasian man, seated with a woman across the aisle from her, tapped her on the shoulder and told her to 'get lost' if she was going to be 'noisy'. She said he also used an expletive and called her a 'slut' more than once. She got off the phone and said she would report him for using vulgarities. She said: 'He asked me to go ahead and do it, so I went downstairs to tell the bus driver.' The driver stopped the bus, and she called the police. After a while, the man came downstairs, demanding to know why the bus had stopped. He became agitated when he realised she had acted on his goading. She said: 'He pressed the bell non-stop, even after he was told that the bus driver could not open the doors.' The man then allegedly tried to prise the doors open. Seeing this, Ms Lim threw herself against the door, but the enraged man slammed himself against her, pinning her to the side of the bus and denting her spectacles. The drama played out in front of about 10 passengers in the lower deck of the bus, said Ms Lim. When the police arrived, both parties gave statements. The man, who is not a tourist, could not be reached for comment. A police spokesman confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying both parties were advised on their legal recourse. Ms Lim, who intends to press charges, said: 'We need to send a signal that we will not tolerate bullying on the bus.'

  13. I was watching the Channel U news a moment ago. The editor of Sin Ming paper who caused the death of a 24 year old maid and injured a 70 year old rider was previously sentenced to 18 months' jail when the first sentence was passed. She appealed and managed to reduce the 18 months' jail to 1 day. Why the initial sentence can be changed so drastically?

  15. Too many, way too many. This morning ... those going to Tuas or PIE via KJE should know. A white EVO (If i'm not wrong) totalled and caused unnesscary jam early in the morning. When will those jokers learn? Good cars becomes "bad name". True blue drivers of performance car becomes target of 'bengish' remarks. Good roads becomes rough due to uneven patches here and there. Garment to spent $$$ to touch up accident areas and off goes our tax $$$$. And we are all late for work somehow or rather.
