  1. At least 32 dead, 85 injured as trains collide in Greece By Chris Liakos, Heather Chen, Mohammed Tawfeeq and Jennifer Hauser, CNN Updated 11:59 PM EST, Tue February 28, 2023 Firefighters attend the scene of the crash near the city of Larissa, Greece, on March 1, 2023. Thanos Floulis/Reuters Rescue workers are in a desperate search for survivors after a head-on collision between two trains in central Greece killed dozens of people and injured scores. At least 32 people were killed and more than 85 injured when a passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train on Tuesday evening, shortly before midnight, in Tempi, central Greece, near the city of Larissa, the Greek Fire Service said. “We just heard a bang… the (train) car started spinning, before ending up sideways when we managed to exit,” one male passenger told Greek public broadcaster ERT. “It was 10 nightmarish seconds with fire, you couldn’t see much from the smoke,” said a second passenger. Recovery efforts are underway, with the focus on the first two carriages of the passenger train, the Greek Fire Service said. The death toll is expected to rise. The passenger train had been traveling from the capital Athens to Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, which is renowned for its festivals and vibrant cultural life. The collision follows a nationwide carnival at the weekend which ended with a public holiday on Monday. Smoke rises from the derailed train carriages. Vaggelis Kousioras/AP Images on Greece’s state-owned public broadcaster ERT showed plumes of thick smoke pouring out of toppled carriages and long lines of rescue vehicles next to them. Meanwhile, rescue workers with torches searched carriages for survivors as paramedics led shell-shocked passengers from the scene. The images also showed some surviving passengers arriving in Thessaloniki. Rescue operations are underway and the death toll is expected to rise. STringer/SOOC/AFP/Getty Images Passengers who survived the train crash near the city of Larissa arrive in Thessaloniki, Greece, on March 1, 2023. Alexandros Avramidis/Reuters Greek Fire Service spokesman Vassilis Varthakogiannis said 194 passengers had been taken safely to Thessaloniki and 20 people transferred by bus to the city of Larissa. He added that of the 85 people injured, 53 remained in hospital. At least 150 firefighters with 17 vehicles and 40 ambulances are involved in the rescue operation, Varthakogiannis said. A passenger walks on the side of the road after the collision in Larissa city. Vaggelis Kousioras/AP The Greek railway company, Hellenic Train, said in a press release that there was “a head-on collision between two trains: a freight train and train IC 62 which had departed from Athens to Thessaloniki.” Authorities said it is still not clear what led to the collision. Hellenic Train, the main Greek railway company, was acquired by Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane in 2017 and is now fully controlled by Trenitalia. The company operates both passenger and freight transport. The main line on which daily connections are offered is Athens-Thessaloniki.
  2. During one of our cruise stops recently, we had a day in Athens. Technically the ship called at the Port of Piraeus, which was very near Athens. We hired a private driver to bring us around for the day, and it was a wonderful day with good weather, bearing in mind this was December (i.e. winter). We saw the changing of guards at the Greek Parliament, went up Mt Lycabettus, Acropolis including Aeropagus, New Acropolis museum and other sights. I made several videos but here is just one short video summarizing what we did that day. http://youtu.be/bfABTgvEFRY If there is interest here, please shout out and I will post more of my review. Have a great day!

  4. AsiaOne Sunday, Oct 02, 2011 A Singaporean man has been missing in Athens for five days. He missed a medical conference that he flew there to attend and has not been heard from since. Mr Kouk Leong Jin, a graduate student at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, arrived in the Greek capital last Monday. He made a call at about 10.40pm (Athens time) to a classmate, Mr Leong Jin He, on Tuesday evening, Sep 27, but the latter missed the call as he was already sleeping. They were both scheduled to attend the conference together. Chinese local evening dailies reported that his wife of two weeks, Madam Seow Shu Ping, a 28-year-old teacher, and Mr Kouk's parents are preparing to fly to Athens this evening to look for him. A Facebook page has also been created, with details of his time in Athens up until the time he was last heard from being chronicled, in an apparent effort to find people who may know of his whereabouts. Madam Seow told Chinese daily reporters that she last heard from her husband on Monday, the day that he arrived in Athens. He sent her an SMS to tell her that he had arrived safely, followed by an email later in the evening. In the email, he told her that he was going to visit some smaller islands the next day. He had gone exploring some hills earlier and was full of praise for Greece's ancient architecture. Madam Seow noted that her husband's behaviour had seemed normal, even promising to keep in contact with her, but she has not heard from him since then. She said: "The conference was to have lasted from Wednesday to Friday, but since he went missing on Tuesday, I contacted some of his classmates, only to find out that he did not attend the conference at all." Mr Leong told Shin Min that Mr Kouk did not respond to his SMS on the first day of the conference. When he tried to call Mr Kouk at 10pm later that night, he found out that the line was not connected. A check with the hotel where Mr Kouk was staying showed that he last accessed his hotel room on Tuesday evening. A check with his telecoms provider showed he had surfed the Internet using his phone at a little past 10pm (Athens time) on the same day. Duke-NUS told the Chinese evening dailies that a representative from the school will be sent to Athens to render assistance, while the family of the missing man has also reportedly contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the local embassy in Athens for help. Local police there have been alerted, while a notice was also posted on a Greek 'missing persons' website. Wife buys one-way ticket to Athens Madam Seow told Shin Min Daily News that she would not come back until she found her husband. She and Mr Kouk's parents are reportedly flying to Athens this evening to look for him. She told Shin Min: " If I cannot find him I'm not coming back." After learning that Mr Kuok last went missing on Tuesday, she also found out that he has not checked out of his hotel room to date, nor was he on the return flight that was booked for him back to Singapore. She said: "I can feel that he's just waiting for me to rescue him!" The hotel staff reported that his room has remained untouched on Saturday evening, with his belongings in place. Mr Kouk is about 1.7m tall, wears spectacles, and was last seen waering a light blue collared shirt. He was carrying a black bag, and wearing a pair of black shoes. Asiaone

  6. ATHENS: Greece's state competition watchdog has fined British energy giant BP and Anglo-Dutch counterpart Royal Dutch Shell nearly 50 million euros (US$63 million) for price-fixing, the body said on Tuesday. The two companies had a "concerted practice" of setting discount policy in gas stations around the country, which amounted to price-fixing, the competition commission ruled. At a November 20 meeting, the commission voted by majority to slap a 30-million fine on BP Hellas and a 19.7-million fine on Shell Hellas. "The commission found that (the two companies) had no intention of competing against each other and converged their net wholesale prices through proportionally adjusted discounts," the watchdog said. Failure to comply with the ruling within 90 days will incur an additional penalty of 10,000 euros per day, the commission added. The ruling is open to appeal at Greece's administrative courts. - AFP/de Any chance it happening here??? Price Fixing high chance will happen. Fine? No Way...
