SINGAPORE - New laws will be tabled in Parliament some time this year to ban the sale of media streaming boxes with "add-on" services that help consumers access pirated content. This clarity comes on the heels of a three-year review by the Ministry of Law (MinLaw) and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (Ipos) of copyright laws here. The legality of media streaming boxes has been a grey and contentious area as copyright holders have found it difficult to apply many of the usual legal avenues created in the DVD era against set-top box retailers that benefit from the sale of "add-on" services. "We are of the view that legislative amendments are needed to both clarify our policy position and the actions that can be taken against retailers of such set-top boxes," said MinLaw in its Copyright Review Report issued on Thursday (Jan 17). "The measures, which are absent today, will make clear that acts such as the import and sale of such devices are prohibited," said the ministry in a separate statement. The review involves two public consultations, three town hall meetings and 10 engagement sessions conducted since August 2016. Feedback from various stakeholders - including consumers, industry and trade associations, businesses, intellectual property law practitioners and academics - were sought. Close to 100 formal submissions and more than 280 online feedback forms were received by MinLaw and Ipos. The new laws will impose civil and criminal liability on people who wilfully distribute or sell a product that can be used to access pirated content if the product is designed for such access or advertised as such. It will also be illegal to sell a generic device with "add-on" services - such as supplying website links or subscription services to pirated content. The Copyright Act was enacted in 1987, with major revisions last made in 2014 to allow content owners seek a High Court order to get Internet service providers (ISPs) to block piracy websites. Before the revised law, they could not compel ISPs to block pirated content. Last November, the High Court ordered eight new piracy websites and any others related to them to be blocked, bringing the total number of such websites blocked to just over 60. However, there was no move to ban the applications in media streaming boxes, also known as Android boxes, and the boxes themselves.

To sell well in Singapore, you need: 1. the reliability of a Toyota 2. the brand of a Lexus 3. the smallest possible displacement The newly updated ES range, with a new 2.0L engine, really hoseh liao. Even the current ES250 is already quite well priced compared to its stablemates (eg GS). It just needs to be slightly more competitive before we have a bestseller. High Court to decide which driver at fault American woman whose leg was severed seeking damages that are likely to hit $1m By K.C. Vijayan, Law Correspondent THE High Court will this week decide which of two drivers - or possibly both - is to blame for a freak accident that caused an American housewife to lose a leg. The two-day hearing starts tomorrow before Justice Lai Siu Chiu. It will pit car driver Rosli Salim against private school bus driver Toh Yoke Chin in the spat over liability for the 2007 accident. Both parties have already accepted in principle, at earlier hearings, that the victim - Mrs Erin Mullin, then 35 - was totally innocent. This means that either or both parties are 100 per cent liable and will have to pay damages expected to hit $1 million. After the allocation of liability is settled by the court, the case will be referred to an assistant registrar to assess the total amount of damages to be paid, in the proportions decided by the High Court judge. Mrs Mullin was in the carpark of the McDonald's restaurant in Queensway at about 7.45am on Sept 18, 2007 when the car driven by Mr Rosli knocked into her. Moments earlier, Mr Rosli, who was driving along Queensway in the direction of the Ayer Rajah Expressway, had turned left into the carpark. But to do so he had switched from an inner lane, overtaking the bus driven by Mr Toh in the process. The bus hit the rear of the car and the impact caused the vehicle to accelerate, ramming two parked cars before knocking down Mrs Mullin. Her right leg was severed and she suffered other serious injuries, according to court documents filed by her lawyer Ramasamy Chettiar. She was initially treated at the National University Hospital, where the leg was amputated, and then in Chicago, where she now lives. Her husband, Mr Jason Mullin, then 36, suffered post-traumatic stress disorder on seeing her in hospital after the accident. He was awarded $10,000 for his suffering by senior assistant registrar Cornie Ng earlier this month. The expatriate couple had arrived in Singapore a few months before the accident for him to take up a job here as a trader with a foreign bank. Police investigated the accident and in January 2009 Mr Rosli pleaded guilty in court to two charges of rash driving and causing grievous hurt. He was jailed for five months and disqualified from driving for four years. But in the current civil suit filed by the Mullins, Mr Rosli - in defence documents filed by his lawyer Niru Pillai - argues that the accident was caused or contributed to by the alleged negligence of Mr Toh, whose bus hit the rear of his car. Among other things, he argues that the bus hit the middle-rear section of his car, which showed that he was already in the left-most lane, ahead of it, at the time. He claimed Mr Toh did not regulate the speed of the bus properly to take into account the car that was in front. But Mr Toh denies any liability, arguing there was a break in the chain of causation between the first collision involving the two vehicles and the second collision between Mr Rosli's car and Mrs Mullin. In defence documents filed by his lawyers Desmond Tan and Chia Aileen, Mr Toh added that Mr Rosli was negligent in the control and management of his car, and this led to the accident. If he succeeds before the court, then 100 per cent blame will fall on Mr Rosli. Mrs Mullin is seeking damages which are expected to exceed $1 million, factoring in present and future medical expenses, loss of earning capacity and pain and suffering.

And try for a slice of the billion dollars!!! This group is based in Singapore??? Billion dollar deal for Asian football By Soccernet staff November 24, 2009 Mohamed Bin Hammam has sealed a record-breaking deal. The deal, which dwarfs the total revenue earned by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) between 1992 and 2008, gives Singapore-based sports marketing, event management and media group WSG rights to AFC events up until 2020. "What has been achieved for this contract is quite tremendous," Bin Hammam told a select group of reporters in the Malaysian capital after the signing. "From 1992 to 2008 our total revenue from rights was $150m... for everything. Now we talk about eight years with $1 billion ... and this figure will go up, we are sure." Bin Hammam credited WSG with spotting the potential in Asian soccer. WSG have been commercial partners of the AFC since 1993. "It is AFC's pleasure to renew our tight relationship with WSG, who were the first ones to recognise the incredible potential of the Asian game. "They came to support us when our revenues (from rights) were close to zero. We had difficult times where our competitions were worth nothing ... people wanted to pay nothing." The agreement is expected to deliver "at least" $1bn in revenues to the AFC over the contractual period, WSG said. "This is a landmark deal and shows what Asian football is capable of achieving." WSG Chairman Seamus O'Brien, said: "In 1993, we made a commitment together with the AFC to take Asian football to the world. "Today, in just over a decade and a half, the value of Asian football has grown 10-fold and it has earned its rightful place on the international stage. "Its events are being watched and followed throughout the world, not just in Asia, by billions of passionate fans and viewers." Tuesday's deal with the AFC comes a week after WSG partnered with the fledgling OneAsia golf tour. Financial details of that deal were not made public, but under that multi-year, multi-million dollar agreement WSG are responsible for marketing and managing sponsorships and licensing arrangements for the golf tour.

Just now drove the car slightly without realising my back passenger door is still opened. As a result, the door got slightly hit by the pillar next to it. Luckily no paint damage but now there is a 6cm vertical dent on the door. Not really deep but enough to see it when you look at an angle of reflection. My car is silver metallic colour by the way. Of cos I am Sim Tia... but what to do right. Only option is to pray that the Paint Removal service can massage back this type of dent to near 95%. I don't expect 100% cos don't think that is achievable. Do you all think PDR can save this? Heard Capitol has this service? please advise. Thank you.
