  1. Verdick is out Doctor gets 10 years’ jail for sexually assaulting patient in Bedok clinic Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/doctor-sexually-assaulted-patient-wee-teong-boo-jailed-11294522 SINGAPORE: A doctor convicted of sexually assaulting his patient was on Wednesday (Feb 27) sentenced to 10 years' jail. He was also ordered to pay the victim S$1,200 in compensation for the counselling fees she incurred to deal with the psychological and emotional effects from the assault, which took place in 2015 in his Bedok clinic. Wee Teong Boo, 68, was found guilty on Monday of one charge of outrage of modesty and another charge of sexual assault by digital penetration. He was acquitted of the original rape charge. Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz on Wednesday asked for a sentence of 12 years and seven months’ jail. Of this, three months was in lieu of seven strokes of the cane, as Wee is above the age of 50 and cannot be caned. She said “medicine has long been regarded as the most noble of professions”, but Wee’s “senseless actions” violated its ethics and code, “forever shattering” the victim’s life. “Forty-two years after entering a profession committed to the primacy of patient welfare, Wee Teong Boo stands before this court, convicted of sexual assaulting and molesting a young female patient during two medical examinations - his senseless actions violating the very ethical mores that every doctor swears to uphold,” said the prosecutor. Advertisement Wee has indicated his intent to appeal against the conviction and sentence. GIVING TESTIMONY WAS LIKE BEING RAPED AGAIN: VICTIM The prosecutor reminded the judge of the victim’s testimony during the trial, which the victim had likened to being “raped again”. The woman, aged 23 when the assault took place, had told the court that after the incident, she “was living like a walking dead, walking as per normal, but I was just dead inside”. She also wondered why it happened to her, “out of so many patients”. “What are the odds of being raped when you visit a medical professional in Singapore, in such a safe country? I cannot register why I am the one, I just can’t understand why it happened to me,” the prosecutor recalled the victim saying. The incident affected her classes and "destroyed her trust in male doctors". The victim later requested only for female doctors whenever she visited a polyclinic. She also had trouble with her male friends, unable to accept any intimacy. Wee was acquitted of the rape charge as the judge said he was satisfied that there was reasonable doubt as to whether penile penetration could have taken place. On Wednesday, the prosecutor said Wee had been "utterly disgraceful" in court, in particular retorting during cross-examination: "I do not consider her (the patient) a victim." "This barbed taunt smacks of arrogance and pure defiance and ... lack of remorse," said the prosecutor. She also said that Wee maligned the integrity and character of independent witnesses during the trial, claiming that a doctor on the stand was not giving objective evidence and instead was embellishing it to suit the prosecution's case. He also maligned police officers, calling them "stupid" and "blatantly lying about ill treatment while in custody", said the prosecution. Wee’s defence counsel Edmond Pereira said he will not be making submissions on sentence as his client is maintaining his innocence. He pointed to Wee's history of medical conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, and pointed out that there was no need for the prosecution to increase an "already lengthy" jail term as Wee will be in his late 70s by the time he is released from prison. He also tried contesting the compensation order relating to the victim's counselling fees, saying there was no evidence in court about the counselling when the victim testified. Wee is out on bail pending his appeal. Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/doctor-sexually-assaulted-patient-wee-teong-boo-jailed-11294522

  3. Prof gets 1-year probation for stealing hostelite's undies By Elena Chong AN ASSOCIATE professor at a China university was placed on 12 months' probation on Monday for theft of women's undergarments. Lee Wing Foon, 39, pleaded guilty in February to three counts of stealing brassieres and panties from three students at Nanyang Technological University on Dec 20 last year. The value of the stolen items was $153. Lee, who is suffering from fetishism, a sexual disorder, was caught at around 9.40pm that day when an NTU security officer saw him loitering at a hall of residence carrying a black bag. He was detained and taken to the security post where his bag was found to contain two bras and a panty belonging to a 21-year-old student. He had earlier stolen clothings and undergarments from the same hall when he drove there. He then placed the two 19-year-olds' bras and panties in a plastic bag in his car. Community Court Judge James Leong had called for a pre-sentence report which recommended probation for Lee. His lawyer, Mr Jose Charles, had earlier tendered a psychiatric report which said Lee had committed the offences as a result of his urges, work and marital stress. Under the probation order, Lee cannot leave the country for work beyond seven days on each occasion without first getting the permission of his probation officer. He has to attend psychiatric treatment and follow-up regularly, as well as specific treatment programme to address his condition. Lee had told the court that he was still doing work in China and would consult the probation officer if he was needed over there. Judge Leong said it was imperative that he undergo the period of probation without any problem. If he breaches his probation, he would be brought back to court to be sentenced for the original offences. Lee thanked the judge after the probation order. Two charges of fraudulently having a total of 544 pieces of underwear and apparel believed to have been stolen were considered during his sentencing. He could have been jailed for up to three years or fined, or both, for each charge of theft. http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2...ry_224703.html yay!! he gets 12 months of probation aka holiday but no free food and lodging!

  5. Contraband cigarettes found hidden in car boot, driver arrested By Gamar Abdul Aziz, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 15 May 2008 0111 hrs SINGAPORE : He was well-dressed and drove a brand-new car but he was also a cigarette smuggler. The 30-year-old man, who was dressed in suit and tie, arrived at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Wednesday in his brand new Sports Utility Vehicle. Upon checking, officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) found cartons of cigarettes hidden in the speaker box compartment in the car boot. A total of 100 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes was found hidden in the vehicle. The man was arrested and his vehicle seized. The customs duty payable was estimated to be about S$7,040, and Goods and Services Tax at S$640. The driver claimed he would be paid S$500 if he successfully delivers the contraband cigarettes. Preliminary investigations reveal that he had collected the cigarettes from a shop in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. He was supposed to wait for further instructions upon arrival in Singapore. The case has been referred to the Singapore Customs for further investigations. If found guilty, first time offenders can be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of duty evaded. Repeat offenders can be jailed for up to two years and fined. - CNA/de http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin.../347803/1/.html can sell backside liaoz..

  8. SINGAPORE - A self-employed man was sentenced to three weeks in jail on Monday for slapping teenage blogger Amos Yee outside the State Courts last month. Neo Gim Huah, 49, was charged in court on Monday. He was not represented and gave a long mitigation plea in Chinese, explaining why he did it. He told the court earlier he wanted to teach Yee a lesson. Neo, who runs his own air-conditioning and electrical engineering business, said he had taken offence at portions of the video posted online by Yee which he found disrespectful to Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. He closely monitored the case and intended to confront and slap the blogger before his first two court appearances as he felt that the teenager's actions had portrayed Singapore in a negative light. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Winston Man said Neo initially restrained himself and did not confront Yee until his third court appearance on April 30 when he realised the teenager had flouted his bail conditions. Neo also believed that it would be difficult for the criminal justice system to deal effectively with Yee because of his age. On the afternoon of April 30, he waited at the State Courts for Yee to arrive. He knew the media was present when he slapped the blogger, and deliberately committed the offence as he wanted the assault to be publicised "so that the world at large would know that the victim was being taught a lesson''. Neo was arrested at about 2am the next day. Arguing for a sentence of two weeks' jail, DPP Man said Neo's offence was pre-meditated and featured a strong element of vigilantism, which undermined law enforcement mechanisms and the criminal justice system. "Public confidence in law enforcement mechanics and the criminal justice system will also be eroded if there is a widespread perception that it is acceptable to take the law into one's own hands and resort to violence in order to address a perceived injustice,'' he said. Neo said in his mitigation letter that Yee had been disrespectful to Singapore's founding father and insulted him, making all of Mr Lee's contributions "worthless''. He said Yee, whom he described as a "clever child'', had let everyone down. "What I feel is what everybody is feeling," he said. Slapping him would instil fear in the teenager, let him know what the ways of the world are and teach him a lesson, Neo said. He said he knew it was wrong to slap Yee but could not control himself. He could be jailed for up to two years and/or fined up to $5,000. 9. Wow looks like a pretty heavy sentence. Really not worth it. --- Apr 5, 2011 Rapist gets 7 years and 8 strokes By Elena Chong Ong Mingwee was sentenced to seven years' jail and eight strokes of the cane for raping a 22-year-old girl he met hours earlier at a nightspot. -- ST PHOTO: WONG KWAI CHOW ONG Mingwee was sentenced to seven years' jail and eight strokes of the cane on Tuesday for raping a 22-year-old girl he met hours earlier at a nightspot. But the 29-year-old self-employed man who runs a family-owned provision shop at Block 203 Toa Payoh North is appealing. He was found guilty, after a nine-day trial, of raping the woman at a unit above the shop in the early hours of Feb 12, 2009. Ong was introduced to the woman at Zouk disco at Jiak Kim Street when he went there with his brother. He claimed that the woman seduced him when they were dancing at the dance floor. He further testified in his defence that while taking her home in a cab at about 4am, they kissed, and she agreed to his suggestion to head for his place. But the prosecution's case was that the victim, while still in her semi-conscious drunken stupor state, made frantic phone calls to her mother and friend to take her home when she found herself in a place she did not know. She had cried and said repeatedly that she wanted to go home but Ong would not let her leave unless she had sex with him. The main issue was whether sex was consensual. District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim rejected his defence that sex was consensual. She found that the prosecution had made out a case beyond reasonable doubt.

  11. MP Indranee Rajah speaks up about man mocked by Miss Universe Singapore finalist 398 37 0 mar2214_indraneerajah.jpg AsiaOne Saturday, Mar 22, 2014 SINGAPORE - Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC and Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Education Ms Indranee Rajah has spoken up for the man in the centre of a social media controversy. RELATED STORIES Beauty queen sorry for mocking man online What you say online can affect you: Indranee Earlier this week, a post by Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist Jesslyn Tan mocking a man's attire went viral. She has since apologised. In her Facebook post, Ms Indranee, who has known the man for many years, said: "A few days ago, the Internet was abuzz with the story of Miss S'pore finalist, Ms Jesslyn Tan, who found the sight of a man with a hole in his T-shirt napping on the MRT so amusing that she snapped a photo of him and put it on her FB with the caption "Holey moley. Sibei trendy worzxxz". "The post caused a minor Internet storm. Many were critical of it, and Ms Tan has since removed the post and apologised online for being insensitive. "What's it to me? Well, you see, the man in that pic is my resident, Mr Koh Hee Huat, and I have known him for many years. I want to share a little more about this man who has been unwittingly caught up in this mini furore. "Mr Koh is a helper at the Ye Shanghai Teochew Muay stall at Bukit Merah View (BMV). The stall opens at night till the early hours of the morning. Those familiar with the area - and certainly all the taxi drivers on the midnight shift - will know this stall and Mr Koh. He's the man who takes the orders from the customers in the queue and dishes out their selections into small plates for the other helper to bring to the tables. He's on his feet from evening until 3.00 am in the morning when the stall closes. "Every time I've been to the stall after my Friday night MPS ( and that's many times over the years ) he's been there - in good or bad weather, quiet and unassuming, but always hard at work, and responsive to all customers, no matter who they are. "He makes an honest living to support his mother and his family. His wife works at the same stall. He has a daughter waiting to enter poly. "In the midst of all the buzz and noise on the topic, I would like to address this from his perspective, so people can understand the impact the episode has had on him. "First, he's genuinely bewildered why he has been singled out like this out of the blue, and on such an issue. His T-shirts have holes because he wears them for work. The stall has metal fixtures which snag on the T-shirts, causing them to tear. It's just part and parcel of his work environment, in the same way that people who wear overalls may get grease stains, or outdoor workers get dust on their uniforms. "But more importantly, the episode caused him to feel a deep loss of face and hurt. When I visited him at the stall last night, he said many customers asked him about the incident, and it was very embarrassing for him because so many people know him. Despite that, though, he still turned up for work over the past few days, stoically carrying on with his job. Many may not realise this, but it takes courage to do this - to turn up and carry on when suddenly, through no doing of your own, you are the subject of national discussion, and every eye is on you. "Mr Koh initially thought of quitting in the wake of this, but his boss encouraged him to stay. His boss told me that he has known Mr Koh since he was boy and he is a very good worker. When Mr Koh's father passed away, he asked the boss to take care of Mr Koh, which the boss promised to do. The boss is determined to keep that promise. "My grassroots leaders and I encouraged Mr Koh to stay too. We told him that this will pass. He doesn't surf the net and he wasn't aware that many have people expressed support for him. "So if you are in the area and have a yen for teochew muay, do go and give Mr Koh a word of encouragement or a thumbs up. He's very much part of our Bukit Merah family, and just like whenever a family member feels down, it helps when others rally round to give a morale booster. And if anyone merits a boost it is this quiet, hardworking, unassuming man. He may not be sibei trendy, but he is definitely "sibei ho". "As for Ms Tan, I am glad that she has apologised, albeit online and not to Mr Koh directly. She says she has learnt from this and would be very mindful of social media in the future. "I do hope so. "We still do not sufficiently appreciate the impact that what we do or say can have on others, especially via social media. The consequences are often unintended, but by then it is too late. The old adage "the pen is mightier than the sword" still holds true in the Internet age, even though the keyboard has replaced the pen. A sword cuts deep, but words can cut deeper. We need to have a care in what we say about others." The part tht caught my eye is the penis mightier than the sword! sorry, spacing spoil... anyway go read the press on this issue. STOMP has it Uncle shamed by Miss Singapore finalist wants to quit job at store after over 28 years Posted on 21 March 2014 | 72,237 views | 135 comments More Sharing Services Following Miss Universe Singapore 2013 finalist Jesslyn Tan's facebook post poking fun at an uncle wearing a T-shirt with holes, and her facebook apology, the uncle wants to quit after working at a porridge stall for more than 28 years. According to Shin Min Daily News, a netizen revealed that the uncle is working at the famous Ye Shang Hai Teochew Porridge (夜上海潮洲粥) in Bukit Merah view. The uncle's boss, Mr Wu, revealed that after the photo of the uncle was publicised, he feels embarrassed, and that he has also embarrassed his relatives and friends. Mr Wu asked him to stay, and told him to let him think about how to solve the issue. Mr Wu said that perhaps it was while working when the uncle's shirt accidentally got hooked, causing a hole. Mr Wu feels indignant for the uncle, and said that insulting his staff is akin to insulting him. He added that the uncle leads a down-to-earth life, and it was unnecessary of Jesslyn Tan to post his photo online. He said: "Is being poor a crime? What's wrong with him using his own abilities to earn money and support his family?" It is known that the uncle's wife also works at the porridge stall, and has held the job for about 20 years. 13. After a virtual boycott by several manufacturers of its 2009 event, the Tokyo Motor Show will return in 2011. The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association has decided that the show will begin on December 2nd, instead of its usual October start date. Media will be invited for advanced previews from November 30. That takes the Japanese showcase away from the Frankfurt Motor Show, and nestles it in between the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show and the North American International Auto Show. The relaunched show will take place at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center, also known as Tokyo Big Sight, a facility with 72290 m2 of exhibition space. From 1989, the show had been held at the much larger Makuhari Messe based in Chiba. That facility is nearly three times as large as the new location. Aside from the typical showcase and demonstration of the latest vehicles, the show may put increased emphasis on transportation in future societies. Other exhibitions could include talks and demos from coachbuilders, energy researchers, information and communication technology professionals and urban planners. Source : Worldcarfans

  15. FOSHAN - The driver who ran over and killed a 2-year-old girl in Foshan, Guangdong province, in October 2011 was sentenced to 30 months in prison for negligent homicide. A court found in September that Hu Jun had driven a van over Wang Yue, a girl widely known as Yue Yue, in a hardware market in Foshan. Minutes later, the girl was run over again, that time by a truck. Video footage showed that at least 18 people passed by the child after the accident without helping her. Seven minutes after Yue Yue had been run over, a 57-year-old rag collector named Chen Xianmei spotted her and found her parents. The girl died in a hospital a week later. Hu Jun's final sentence was a year shorter than the one he had received when he was convicted, Yangcheng Evening News reported on Wednesday. The report said witnesses, as well as other evidence, suggested that Hu had not been initially aware that he had hit someone. It wasn't until three days after the accident that he turned himself in to the police. Hu filed an appeal over his initial sentence. He and others involved in the accident eventually reached an agreement with Yue Yue's parents, pledging to pay them 303,000 yuan ($48,647) in compensation. The parents later said they understood Hu. The court that heard Hu's appeal, the Foshan Intermediate People's Court, decided the agreement constituted grounds for reducing Hu's criminal responsibility. Yue Yue's case gave rise to heated discussions across the country, prompting commentators and the public to discuss morality in modern society. Yue Yue's death, although extremely sad, has had some good effects, said Tan Fang, a professor with the South China Normal University in Guangzhou. The government and public were quick to criticise the indifference shown by those who passed by the injured girl without trying to help her. And there have been institutional changes, he said. The city of Guangzhou, for example, has made significant strides in ensuring that good Samaritans are rewarded for their deeds. And more people have started to think about the responsibilities they have as citizens and about the importance of living up to moral standards. As a result, good Samaritans have become far more common. Tan founded a website about good Samaritans in China in 2008 and started writing a column about Yue Yue's case to guide the public's reflections about her death. Many people have since called for a strengthening of the system used to protect those who offer assistance to others who are in danger, noting that rescuers have been accused of causing accidents in several cases and sued. http://motoring.asiaone.com/Motoring/News/...220-390659.html reminded of that poor little girl again..

Robert Stephen Dahlberg, a stock broker and former junior Tall Black basketballer, appeared in a Singapore court last week charged with causing grievous bodily harm - relating to an alleged booze-fuelled altercation in April 2010 in which two locals were injured. Dad Bill Dahlberg, a trustee of the Canterbury Community Trust, said despite his son having skipped the country in July last year, he had always been keen to honour his obligations, though he would defend the charges. "Robert did the right thing by going to the police in the days after the incident and voluntarily giving a statement. He continued to be concerned about the welfare of Mr Liew [one of the injured] and made repeated offers to pay for medical expenses and arrange for him to see a specialist. "Robert stayed in Singapore, gaining permanent residency status, for 14 months after the incident. It was a shock to us all when charges were laid." Last July, he paid a $23,000 bond to travel for business while on bail. He promised to return to Singapore, but skipped to New Zealand. Dahlberg returned to Singapore and was arrested upon arrival and appeared in court. His next court date is in two weeks.

Last year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) received more than 1.36 million responses as part of feedback over the phone or in writing. This is about double the number in 2007, a spokesman told The Straits Times. The surge is a positive trend, said Mr Cedric Foo, MP for Pioneer SMC and chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Transport. 'As our society matures, the 'bo chap' attitude is gradually giving way to 'I can make a difference with my feedback'. This should definitely be encouraged,' he added. Political observer and former Nominated MP Zulkifli Baharudin said all feedback received, including complaints, should be viewed in a positive light.
