Seriously something is wrong here. A disgraced, on-the-run lawyer here could practice his trade in the Land of the Free & even travel frequently overseas for work? For 6 freaking years?!! Is it that the authorities never raise to INTERPOL's attention or if done so, no one basically "hue" our little red dot? Luckily some German was alert enough to arrest this joker and justice was served. A local woman has come forward to share her experience of having married a fugitive rapist. Mdm Zhang (43, masseuse) told reporters that she got to know her Norwegian husband Michael (57, businessman) through a friend about 11 years ago when she was on holiday in Italy. The two had maintained contact through the internet and met again in Dubai in 2004. They dated for a year before getting married in Singapore on 25 May 2005. Mdm Zhang said, "I felt very lonely when I was in Dubai. The social rules there were very strict so it was very tough for me. At that time, he became my sanctuary." Their marriage hit an unexpected hitch when her husband was suddenly deported from Singapore in 2006, then extradited back to Norway from Qatar after that. "I didn't know what happened to him. He told me an ex-girlfriend had some financial troubles with her business, so he needed to return and help with investigations," said Mdm Zhang. After that, Mdm Zhang related that she paid more than $3,000 in legal fees on her husband's behalf. The lawyer did not explain to her about the case, but suggested that she search for Michael's name on the internet. "I discovered that Michael was wanted by the Interpol. He is a convicted rapist." According to the Norwegian media, Michael was sentenced to 3 years and 10 months' jail for raping his ex-girlfriend. He had also been arrested for using violence on nearly ten women, including threatening his ex-wife with a knife. Michael became a fugitive when he disappeared before his case was brought on appeal in Norway. Michael eventually served his sentence then returned to Singapore to look for Mdm Zhang at her flat. At the time, Mdm Zhang refused to let Michael into her house. Furious with the refusal, the man attempted to force entry, resulting in Mdm Zhang summoning the police for help. Three weeks after the first incident, Michael returned to Mdm Zhang's house with some men. She was not at home to stop them and the men made off with her property including furniture, appliances and her computer. PM Lee says JI fugitive Mas Selamat's escape a setback By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 March 2008 1754 hrs SINGAPORE : Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said that the escape of Jemaah Islamiyah leader Mas Selamat Kastari is a setback and is something that should never have happened. Making his first public comments on an issue that has gripped Singaporeans, Mr Lee on Sunday also called on the people to "close ranks and bounce back, chastened but stronger and more on guard". With Mas Selamat still on the run after 12 days, it is not surprising the hunt for the missing fugitive remains the talk of the town. In his first public comments on the issue, Mr Lee said the authorities are not absolutely sure yet what happened. But they will find out what went wrong and "fix it". A Committee of Inquiry has been set up to look into how the escape occurred. Mr Lee said, "As Minister Mentor said, we are not infallible. If we are not careful, we make mistakes. When we do, we better find out and put it right. I think that the security agencies are taking it very seriously - ISD certainly. "I think the police and the Gurkha unit and the SAF forces, which are now (trying to) catch him, they are (carrying out) the operation with a lot of resources and close cooperation. I have been talking to the ministers responsible and I think we have a good chance of catching him, provided he is still in Singapore." When asked if he believed that Mas Selamat is in Singapore, Mr Lee replied, "We have no reason to believe that he has left." However, while security forces will learn and grow from this, Mr Lee said such a mistake must never be repeated. Asked if it has affected the country's reputation, Mr Lee said, "It's not done (any) good for our reputation, but I don't think people believe that we are just like any other place....we are different, this was a lapse. What to do, it has happened." Meanwhile, Mr Lee said it was good to see how Singaporeans of all races had come together to distribute flyers to residents and maintain watch.
